  • This is a play-through using Gomora in the PS1 game Ultraman Fighting Evolution. Read on below for more information...
    Gomora is the 1st of 4 bosses in the game. He is an unlockable playable character.
    ===== About Gomora =====
    He's basically a giant dinosaur/Godzilla-like monster who can punch and kick quite well. He even has a roar that sounds similar to Godzilla's.
    Gameplay-wise, he seems to be a very powerful character with good throw energy depletion. His tail also gives him good range for his moves that use it, and he's got a clap move that inflicts high depletion. The downside is that he is quite a slow and clumsy character... which is made worse due to the game's unresponsive controls. He does not have a super or finishing move.
    ===== About Ultraman Fighting Evolution =====
    The game is based on the Japanese tokusatsu TV show Ultraman, and uses 3D models which are based on the characters from the show during fights. There appears to be 3 heroes (the Ultramen), with the rest being monsters and aliens.
    The gameplay is of course your typical 3D versus fighting game. It does not play anything remotely like Street Fighter or Tekken, so you'll need to learn to adapt to it's mechanics. In my opinion, it's mechanics are not so good. The main problem is that the controls are somewhat unresponsive... it seems that the characters in this game has a lot of those instances where 3D animations (such as moves/stuns/etc.) needs to completely finish before you can perform another move, which makes it feel "clunky".
    Also, something that is very unorthodox is that the game does not have continuous input jumps. What I mean by this is for example, if you press and hold Up on the D-Pad to jump, your character only jumps once. Which means that once your character lands, he does not jump anymore, even if Up is held down. You need to let go and press Up again to jump. This is the same for other situations, such as when recovering from being hit or getting up from the ground, it's actually quite annoying. This adds to the unresponsive and clunky feel to the game.
    Overall, the game has enough gameplay that it can be fun... there's quite a lot of moves for each character, and it feels good to string together a few hits, because combos are somewhat restricted to set patterns in the game, meaning that there's not really any freedom for originality.
    The soundtrack is rather unique, it features a mix of "adventure" and "brave-courageous-superhero" type BGMs, which are all very well composed.
