    Hiya Crew... who else has a raymarine autopilot....what's your opinion?

    • @walterlehnert5381
      @walterlehnert5381 4 года назад +3

      We installed the Raymarine X 5 wheel pilot in 2014. Very happy with it. Other than 2 motor failure due to worn motor brushes ,eBay $10 replacement motor, and 2 damaged drive belts, Amazon $20, no trouble. Sailed 46 000 miles.
      In 2017 I bought as a spare the complete Evolution wheel pilot and installed it on our crossing from St Martin to the Azores I expected a big improvement with the Giro compass.
      Half way across the Atlantic I changed back to the old X5.
      The new pilot had only 4 response settings, the old 9. Could not de-tune the response to stabilise the boat with the new Evolution!
      The course computer on the evolution is useless!;
      No problem with the X5.

      @SailingLifeonJupiter  4 года назад +4

      @@walterlehnert5381 yes I agree Walter... I had the x 5 on a previous boat... No probs... The evo tuning isn't great... But my main issue was breaking belts.... And when it is working... the NOISE!
      I'm really please with the upgrade to thrle rotary drive with chain and sprocket.

      @@SailingLifeonJupiter Jamie, I broke a belt because I overtighten it after it started slipping surfing down at 23 kn huge swells on our way to Capetown. The load on the rudder was huge, lucky the steering cable didn't brake. Also we found the autopilot motor gets noise when the carbon brushes wear.

      on catamarans I install hydraulic rams and pump, less noisy more powerful, no strap, I went to 23 knots easily on a outremer 55 light the evolution worked ok. on faster cats ex; gunboat or ts5 margaudons I prefer BG or nke,

      I have 2x EVO200 autopilots, one on each rudder quadrant with both sharing the same Gyroscope. I shut one down to turn the other on. So far it has worked great.

    Yes, when we got our Raymarine autopilot...we got it oversized. If it doesn’t have to work hard steering, ie your boat is much lighter than it’s used to steering, it uses much less power. We have no trouble with it. It’s been installed for 13 years. We just got a new type 2 linear drive and installed it even though nothing was wrong just because how long can an autopilot keep going? We kept the old as a spare...same kind...and have it all wrapped up just in case. Always buy oversized, so that you never have a problem. Your old autopilot will always steer in easy conditions...but buy it for the difficult conditions and you will always be OK...
    Great video, and I like that $2 solution! -Rebecca

    Hi Jamie great video! I love your tech tips. Could you describe the steering system of Jupiter in detail? No quadrant, no rod, no linear drive autopilot possible?
    This lifting rudder system is an amazing safety feature not to mention the ease to inspect and repair the rudders. All boats should have one.

    • @SailingLifeonJupiter
      @SailingLifeonJupiter  4 года назад +6

      Sure... It's just a sprocket on the wheel shaft. Then a chain dropping down evenly off this sprocket where it then connects to the pull cables that are routed to the tiller bar. Very simple. You could possibly use a linear drive, but the rotary makes more sense... Ya, the pop up rudders are great. I've cleared fishing nets off these, without getting wet in the Malacca Strait more than once!

    Jamie and Princess, I just found your channel a couple of days ago and am enjoying binge watching trying to catch up n your videos. Enjoying the technical tips, etc. and learning about the Mumby Catamarans although I favor Puffin monohulls. From previous investigations I was leaning towards HH, Outremere and Privilege Catamarans, but starting to having a more favorable outlook on the Mumby Catamarans thanks to you and your channel. I may never have one, but if I did, I would take a hard look at the Mumby, but don’t know if I have 4 or 5 years left to wait for one to be built. Take care and stay safe. Fair winds and smooth sailing.

      @SailingLifeonJupiter  3 года назад +1

      Hi JJ... Welcome... would have a brewski or 7 with you anytime.
      The Indian crossing was the roughest we've had on Jupiter... But we weren't focused on making vids back then, and when you need to hold on with 2 hands... the camera gets put away.... I found no issues with gear sizing... Only that the loss of a split pin nearly caused us to lose the rig... but that has just trained me jump up the mast to inspect more often.
      The only thing i wouldn't mind is a more comfy cockpit layout.... But because the massive rear crossbeam runs the full width, you cannot have walkthru transoms.. and you would lose the room inside the 2 queen aft quarter berths....
      Everything is a compromise.

  • @en8581
    @en8581 4 года назад +2

    Nice video- thanks! Do you think a fiberglass cat would have been less noisy than your metal hull?

    • @SailingLifeonJupiter
      @SailingLifeonJupiter  4 года назад +4

      That's a good point EN. However, Jupiter2 is insulated with an inch of foam through out (except bilges) to reduce the water noise and temperature variations.
      I've made passages on timber and glass boats... they're noisy as well... It's more, the roar of the ocean than the boat itself, which is fatiguing.

    This is my 2nd time watching one of your shows. The wave action was amazing. Was wondering if a wave big enough could break over the stern? I guess that's silly. Just thought of it as I watched. In Sailing Uma I watched them cross the North Atlantic and some wave broke over their stern. I guess it's less on a cat. Happy Trails

    When (month) did you leave Sumatra for Mauritius/Rodrigues? Would you do that route again? I have a Mumby and am thinking about it but maybe it's easier to go up higher to Seychelles or even the Red Sea. If I remember right, Jimmy Cornell says earlier in the season the winds are lighter. @@SailingLifeonJupiter It used to be Zarquon. (Now "Dilly Dally") I bought it 2 years ago and am in Malaysia, where I've met several other Mumby 14mt. The problem I have is with the closed borders I've only done coastal cruising with it. So I don't have experience with big ocean swell/waves. I think to do the trip you did, which I'm looking at, I'd want a Jordan Series Drogue. Or I may go up the Red Sea. I just discovered your channel. You do a great job! One thing I'd like to see, if you get a chance, is how to reef the huge main while going downwind. It came with the Raymarine Smartpilot X-5. It was SO noisy I never wanted to use it. Plus the belt was chewed up. I keep it as a spare. The CPT is really quiet but without ocean testing I don't know if it's responsive enough. Thanks

      @SailingLifeonJupiter  4 года назад +2

      Ahh.. Neds boat... Cool...yeah the main I'd a little daunting... I would round up to get the wind forward of the beam, de power the mainsheet and then throw in the reefs or drop it completely... We had 25-40kts for 5 or 6 days crossing the IO.. So we ran just on storm jib alone, still surfing.
