I bet you guys use more water onboard with such a high output watermaker at your disposal, in one day, than we use in a month :) Our 400 liters of water last us about 8 weeks when frugal. We wash our clothes in a bucket on the dock, or any spigot we can find onshore, we catch rainwater, and we find clothes washing ladies onboard. The boat gets washed at docks, but mostly by rainwater. And our Snorkelling gear waits for the rain too ;) But I have to admit...our lack of a watermaker is probably why we are such grotty yachties! I always wondered how your beautiful princess stays so pretty and immaculate at all times! -Rebecca
The only other cruiser I've watched make their own DIY watermaker is RUclipsr Emerald Steel. I guess others go for convenience and perhaps sponsorship. As you say, if you make your own, you can fix it because you have the knowledge of its construction. I enjoy your maintenance videos, they're practical. Cheers

Have you tested those pressure vessels? Any issues? I've just finished the design on mine, but I'm undecided on whether to order pressure vessels and membranes from China, or spend more with a US manufacturer with known quality.

It's our biggest luxury, Latitude... being able to "waste" water on hosing the salt off the deck, rinsing out the scuba gear, multiple loads of laundry.... we love it.
Jamie, how's the oil filter change? Looks tight, do you have to loosen the high pressure pump? I would think your meticulous design and alignment still allows 'just enough' room to remove. Great video, I'll be checking back upon my own install. Thank you.

Good video. At the product water side were you have the two valves that never should both be closed at same time... you could probably add a pressure release valve there. If anyone ever does make an error that valve would open instead of causing damage further up the system.
That is a nice idea... if I come across something like that, i'll do it.... Like most things on my boat, only i operate it... but more than likely, i'll make the error eventually! Thanks for watching

Have you have the water checked, to see what contaminates you have. The reason I'm asking is that some irrigation pipe have carcinogens that leak out of the pipe. Its the same reason as why you do not use drain PVC for drinking water.
Good point Greg... no i haven't had it checked... I also hear that copper water piping in many households causes liver and kidney disfunction.... not to mention the chlorine in city water. Our water tanks on Jupiter are integral with the hulls.. therefore aluminium.... not great either with rumours of Alzheimer's!... All we can do, one by one is try to minimise our exposure to the these chemicals... some we can, some we can't or choose not to. I hope that we are minimizing our exposure in other ways such as the food we take and the air we breathe and the medicines that we do not take. I can see the advantages of a high volume system as it minimizes the length of time you must run the engine to produce your water supply. Btw I think I missed you telling us how big your water tanks are and how long you must run the water maker in order to fill them and how often you need to fill them.
Hey Ed... We've got about 800L capacity, but wouldn't normally fill them unless we are going up a muddy river or something and can't use the water maker....Normally i'd only make enough water for about 5 days of use. That way i don't need fresh water flushing of the system.... just make water every 5 days.... but it all depends how many loads of washing we decide to do....or wash down the deck...or scuba gear. My flow meters i got from Aliexpress (china). I've just had a look. My supplier isn't listed anymore but there are plenty there starting at $6usd each.... search "flow meter water"....
Hi, I am starting to look into a diy water maker solution and in total agreement to using the engine for the power as it usually used every other day atleast. Two questions: 1} do you think the sea water pump of the engine would have enough flow to eliminate the need for a low pressure pump and 2) when you know you are motoring for a whole day and you already have enough water do you have a solution for disengaging the high pressure pump asI assume the filters and osmosis filter must have a replacement need so you wouldn't want then being used when you don't need to?
Hey Jon. You will need a dedicated boost pump that will feed more flow than your hi px pump draws… Tee ing from your engine cooling would be asking for trouble for both engine and water maker. Yes, you can disconnect the hi px pump with an electromagnetic clutch, same as they use for car aircon. The pump supplier also has these.
Can you please help us understand why you chose the 317 model pump over the 310? The specs seems similar but the 310 can be found for much less cost? Not sure if one of them is an outdated model.
Hi Sean.. From memory CAT had some guide on their website where you entered your purpose for the pump, and it spat out the appropriate pumps... I believe for seawater RO applications the 317 was recommended with NAB head and Ss316 valves... Where as the 310 is brass and ss304 valves. There is also a Ss316 headed model which was more expensive. BTW, don't be confused by their specs flow rates... You just turn them faster/ slower to get different flows. Tks for watching!

Seems like the Mumby boatyard may have been halted during the pandemic because the cryptic private message I got back indicated they were starting building now (this week). Do you know if a galley up version is possible in your boat design? Do you still think building one would be $300K? How complete is that? Does Mumby have a website or a place to get info, that you know of?
Yes he did stop for a year or 2... But is setting the yard up again now....Yeah I've seen a galley up version that a private owner/builder did... I wasn't impressed... It was a tiny galley, and made the saloon very small and crowded....I wanted galley up also in the beginning, until i saw the result.... the beauty of the stiff construction is that the bridgedeck/hull connection is open.... so that i can stand in the galley (down) and see/chat with folks in the saloon and helm...you don't feel like your standing in a tunnel!.... its the best galley down design ive ever seen. I've had report from other guys who are "getting in line" for a new build with Tim... and it seems my prices have gone up about 10%.... that is for fully fitted, sails, rig, engines. And no he is not online anywhere... but there is a small facebook group that is pretty inactive, although we might start posting on there!... search facebook groups "mumby catamaran". Maybe you can offer a shop and deliver and take a cut on it as a small side hustle. When I'm getting my new boat next year, I would definitely consider buying that...

And they are not really interested in a "one of" buy... when someone buys 1 unit, it is called a "sample"... they expect that you will place an order for 1000! This is China after all. But the equipment is still there from various vendors. And i've had good experiences in general from buying from AliExpress. Good luck with your new boat!
I don’t think that irrigation stuff is safe for drinking water, better to use house water pipe, but it might not be a big deal. I like your setup and explanation, good stuff, you sure are handy. Thanks to share all that knowledge and experimentation with us. I wonder how much the booster pump is necessary, do a few psi of negative pressure cause problems? Have you tried, or are you going safe to save your high-pressure pump?
You might be right... Any plastic isnt good for ya...and I'm not positive about the boost pump requirement.. But for the high flow rates of this system, I certainly wanted it. tks for the feedback.

It's actually flowcoated fibrelgass... made by using a glass table with mould release... paint on 4 coats of flowcoat, then lay down 2 layers of chop strand matt..... then cut as required and cove.... The textured head liner mould is linoleum vinyl (flooring), done the same way.

I think they might start around $4k for a portable... Or $6-12 for an installed one depending on the brand... The biggest cost was for my cat pump which is good quality... You could use a cheaper option. The big difference with mine is it is 2-3x the output of the others.

No... But the PV is made to take the standard sizes of membrane.
