I recently delivered a fantastic wedding work where I used my M10M + M240. It was gorgeous and they’re highly satisfied. Also, I can tell you that there are shots I couldn’t have made without the M10M and no flash, which is my preferred choice… Point is: it can be used of course!
I've only compared my M240 to the M246 Monochrom and as far as tonal range, I don't think there is a huge difference in tonal range between the two, but of course the M246 had an advantage in detail, but in reality, not that much in my opinion, or at least not worth the price difference for me. But in all honesty, THE BEST monochrome camera I've used is the Sigma DP2 Merrill (or any other Foveon based camera). The tonal range AND detail that my Merrill can capture is still jaw dropping to me. Yeah, you can really only shoot up to ISO 400, focus is slow, and write time is crazy long, but dammit, the files for monochrome are SO good. I know, most people talk about the Foveon for color work, but it's a very underrated BW machine.
Just a little update after reviewing some M10 Monochrom RAWs as well as shooting with my new to me, Sigma sd Quattro. This new sensor in the M10 Monochrom might be the first time I would say they are competing with a Foveon for BW work...and yes, it's MUCH MUCH better than the M240 converted and much better than the M246. I don't think it's talked about enough that this new purpose-built Mono sensor in the M10 is far superior than any older Mononchroms in my opinion. I still think the Foveon has advantages in how the silicon sees the full color spectrum at each level (to influence the monochrome conversion) and is just unique and "better" to me, but the M10 Monochrom is the first Monochrom that I would 100% jump to if I could over my M240.

I gotta admit, it was crazy seeing this happen especially when I spoke about the m10m on the other video. This was entertaining to watch. I expected the highlight issue already from another video I watched and my personal experience using digital cameras where I always tell myself to save the highlights. I wouldn't mind trying it out and would definetly own one in the near future used because 9k is pretty steep lol.
I have a Fujifilm X100f with a broken screen and my camera is out of warranty so the replacement is around $400 here in India so I just use it without the screen 😂 but I can see through the viewfinder tho.. but its great when you can't see how your pictures turn out, although I put my camera on auto (just in case) because the screen is broken
I was going to cringe when you said high ISO caps at 3200/6400 in terms of cleanliness as a Nikon D3s and a D5 user but when you completed your sentence stressing the clean outputs for a 41MP camera, I totally agree! :)
My wife got me the Monochrom for our anniversary and I absolutely love it. Little does she know I got her the MP for Christmas, which we'll both share 😏
2 years on and the release of the M11m means these are now a bit more affordable. I see them going for not much more than the regular M10/ M10P. It does intrique me as I already have a M9 for colour and getting another M10 colour is just much of a muchness. But a monochrome...
I have owned this camera since the day it came out and have never regretted it, though I can't say the same about my bank account. You are right to point out its insane low light performance, but one thing you could have also highlighted more explicitly is the dynamic range of the files it creates; you can pull shadows unlike anything I have ever used. The joy of this camera is the absolute constraint it imposes. The down side of the camera is the highlights, but that's really a technical limit as you are only working with luminance, so it is what it is. However, that's why the dynamic range matters because if you shoot like slide film where you are exposing for highlights and developing for shadows, all is well. If you are a black and white shooter, this is the camera to own.
amazing! Yeah, I should've highlighted more on its ability to pull shadow details. I probably just forgot to mention it after saying the same thing in my M10-D review. I guess that's just the feature of the M10 sensor.
Ahh now it makes complete sense why this is Monochrom. Bet if it was in RGB anything higher than ISO 6,400 is unusable. This entire camera is built for low light street photography.
M10R files are clean relatively till iso 12500 iso monochrome beats it hands down but the M10R is the closest to it rendering wise so you get best of both world as well the noise pattern on both is absolutely gorgeous for digital cameras
Love the idea! But not for that price man. The 9k could get me a used medium format camera system and adapt a bunch of lenses to it AND a film Leica with a bucket of film :P

Limitations shlimitations M10m is a pure joy to use. For some. But seriously wanna great bnw and high iso try Nikon d850 it will get a decent image up to 13k-ish iso especially in bnw as many many other cams. Using Leica is a bit ironic: you start really understanding the power of limitations by spending a ton on a body that is barebone basic and thus having an ultra high iso is what goes against the whole concept in a way. I feel that being exposed to Leica philosophy helps to appreciate pretty much any other imaging device in a different light - simply as an extension of your vision, but having Leica as an object of course could overshadow that ))
At this point i feel like Leicas are so expensive that no photographer who uses them can actually justify the price tag. I mean, 9000 for a body? You can have a GFX with a lens for that. Or a Hassy. Or multiple Mamiyas. Or like 90 Canon AE's. Seems to me its gone past a point of "deluxe" right to "deluded" :/
Regarding the Epson RD-1 which uses a Voigtlander Bessa body... why not just buy a Voigtlander Bessa, some film processing equipment and a decent scanner or heck, a scanning attachment to a DSLR/EVIL?
@@whoschrischu too many people just need everything to be absolutely perfectly tailored for their ergonomic comfort and their imaginary intricacies of handling equipment, instead of just taking pictures :P
Chris, I own this camera. In fact, I sold my M10 M and purchased the more expensive M10 M Limited Edition. Last week I purchased the Summaron 24 3.8. That is an amazing little lens. Is it worth it? For me - yes. I feel in love with manual focus while using the Nikon Df. Shifted to Fujifilm X and hated the MF experience. Got tired of chasing the fabled Leica look using everything except a Leica. Typ 246, SL, SL2 was my first entry to the Red Dot Club. Hated the SL system. Sold the 246 and now own the M10 M, M10 R BP, and an M3. Be Blessed
I have a MP (not M-P), a M10-D and a M10-M. They each bring joy in their own way. The film and M10-d are quite similar : you always have that tension of not knowing if the picture is actually what you expected. The M10-M is different because of the back screen but I really love that it gives files that feel the same as shooting b&w film (even though the grain structure is absolutely not the same). Are they overpriced? Surely. Are they worth it? Definitely.
Leica has to be pulling the biggest cosmic joke in the photography industry. First the M10-D without a LCD screen and an average 24MP full frame sensor and now this camera with a monochrome sensor with a price tag of 9000.00 or so is ridiculous! Neither camera is for just anyone except those with lots of money or has one hell of a credit limit on their favorite credit card. I’ve never used a Leica camera but I’m aware of their years of quality in image making cameras and their skilled precision in design, so I could be way out in left field. If it’s all about that little “Red” circle Leica trademark that they are so famous for, then just give me a red sharpie pen and I’ll make my own!
The funny thing about using my Leica is that it just does its job and is impeccably built so it's just a tool that works. I have had a few Sony's, played with Fuji's and even have a Samsung NX3000 that have features galore and many many features, but, and this is a hard thing to prove without you actually using it, my M240 just feels like an extension of my arm so I can get the shots I want in a quiet and unobtrusive manner. Is it overpriced? Yes it is, but I literally haven't used anything that feels and works as well as it does. I'm 100% sure there are people that buy a Leica just because of the brand, and that's fine, but I think a lot of people discount that they are really an amazingly well built and refined design.
Beautiful results from that camera. But is it worth it. When most cameras have a monochrome setting or as you pointed out the rgb controls you have turning colour B&W. I think its all about mind set. If you go out shooting with no colour in mind. You'll find those contrasty pictures. Like how your mind switches when using colour or BW film. You just have to get in that head space.
