  • For today’s Tiki Technical Tuesday we take a deep dive into building the skeletons that help clay sculptures keep their shape: armatures!
Watch us put together an armature for the newest VanTiki studio mug using a combination of digital design, laser cutting, 3D printing, and lots of glue. A big thank you to @biggsstudio for the 3D printing help!
Please subscribe - it means the world to me! Mahalo for watching, as always, put your questions in the comments and I’ll drop my best to answer.

I'm getting ready to make my first slip casting molds for my second ever production run, watching the Technical Tuesday videos to mentally/technically prepare. I've made many plaster molds and casts in the past for non ceramics, but watching this video of the Volcanic Vapor mug being made gave me a little aha moment.
That being your process is very very polished, but also very expensive (relatively speaking) . As a perfectionist, I strive for that hyper "polished" finish as I'm thinking about the mother mold, the countless molds made from that, and any production pieces that result, and I just can't stop refining my first models. I think the time I've spent is fine (two days), but I see myself spending another 2 on smoothing which I rather be pouring plaster. Long story short, returning to the videos again to see what you used for smoothing the monster clay after 1 hour and a half of research at to wether my clay and monster clay are chemically similar :D yay production lol
p.s. when speaking about the pieces being "polished", as I keep returning to the modeling of different mugs I just wonder how they look so perfect, like objects that feel as if they existed independent of the maker, idk if that makes sense, but a large part of that comes from just how technical the construction of the model is, which takes a LOT of tools and resources most small and emerging production artists don't have. But I'm trying to figure out the cheat code :)

Thank you so much for watching!
I definitely strive for polished sculptures and clean molds in the studio, as I think doing both makes production easier in the long run. To get a sculpture looking polished (either a smooth surface or a natural texture) I don’t think it’s a matter of expensive tools, but more a matter of time. All the sculptors I admired working in the film industry spent 25% of the time sculpting the main forms, then 75% of the time detailing and surfacing. Unfortunately that is the bit that rarely gets shown on social media 😄
For molds, I agree that silicone is expensive, but when you calculate the cost vs the return (multiple castings, a safe backup of your master mold) silicone is a great investment. Urethane is a lower cost alternative, but it has its own tricky issues that can be catastrophic when molding (moisture inhibition, not releasing from the model, etc). Back in college I made my silicone molds with silicone caulk from Home Depot 😁
