Your ability to make that clay look SO MUCH like stone is so damn impressive. All those little pot marks along with the cracks elevate this to a whole different level
The easiest and hardest thing to do is... just start! 😄 You can get a small block of clay (a tub of monster clay, or a box of Super Sculpey, and start pushing it around. A fun exercise is giving yourself a set time: 30 minutes or an hour, then push your sculpture back into the box of clay. Think of it like quick practice sketches that get you used to pushing around the medium. No need for fancy tools - when I worked in the FX industry one of the greatest sculptors I knew used mostly forks, a knife, and a spoon!
So glad for the new episode. Interesting take on the Suffering Bastard. You've worked so hard to create the broken stone, but I'm curious to see what texture/color the tongue will be. A shocking pink? Or a loathsome grey-green? Black, with barnacles...the suspence. Hope it's fun work. Happy New Year!
Thank you! I'm still pondering the tongue myself! For the body of the mug, I'm going to go with a satin black lava color to honor the original - and maybe a sickly green variant. I don't want to jinx things by talking about gaze this early in the game - lets get it done and molded first :)
Thank you! I sometimes post design illustrations on my instagram feed - its @vantiki if you'd like to check it out! I'll be putting the Dead Bastard drawings up once I'm done molding the sculpture
Thanks man! I realized midway through filming that only vintage mug collectors and exotic cocktail enthusiasts would recognize the mug. The vintage mug it’s based on has a classic form that was fun to play with. Fun film fact: the Suffering Bastard cocktail was Created by Joe Scialom of the Long Bar at Shepheard’s Hotel, Cairo, 1942 - I always think of Laurence of Arabia - I know the film was WW1, but the hotel the officers used was the same!
AAAH! No, Ren Clark's Polynesian Village was in Ft. Worth, Texas. We have sooooo little tiki history in the Lone Star State, please don't take away what little we do have! As always, fantastic video. Thank you for doing these!
Not at all! I don’t want to be “that guy” who gets his facts wrong! My bad for editing and posting on the same day before double checking everything. Mahalo for the heads up!
Love it! A friend of mine has a kiln and as a new year resolution I have decided that im going to try to sculp/cast a zombie mug. Thank you so much for the inspiration! Last year I left a comment (if you remember about me being ex special makeup artist) and i was pleasantly surprised you responded! Sorry for the ramble, but you inspire me to pick up sculpting again and I cant thank you enough!

We used WED clay all the time back in the FX industry. It is a great product for larger sculpture, but it’s water based so you need to keep your piece covered so it doesn’t dry out or crack. I get the monster clay straight from the maker www.monstermakers.com/monsterclaygray

Thank you! I do love the texturing process 😄
I am so stoked to see this mug!!!! So beyond excited 👍👍👍👍👍😎🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Thank you so much! It was fun to finally get it off the paper and into clay!
I have zero creative talent in the world of art, but your videos are extremely interesting and amazing.
Thank you for watching!
I love how you can take a concept and just completely elevate it!! What an awesome looking mug!
Thank you so much! I’ve been wanting to explore a Bastard homage for a while - had to wait till I came up with a fun spin on the classic design.
@@vantikistudio you definitely found your in!
Looks fantastic! You are outdoing yourself, as always!!
Thank you very much!
I am inspired by you and many others and would love to get into sculpting, do you have any suggestions on where to start?

The Dead Bastard artwork has my heart. I love love love your artwork! Do you have anywhere that you post illustrations?

Cool design/concept! I'm not familiar with the original Bastard but I'm looking forward to seeing this guy finished!

@@vantikistudiohow awesome, I'll have to look into that!
I’ve run out of superlatives so I’m starting over at the beginning of the alphabet: Amazing!
Mahalo!
Happy New Year to you and Mrs Van Tiki! Love the new mug design and thanks for all the little pro tips that you share in your video's.

Oh no!! Sorry for the error!! I’ll have to edit the description to set the record straight 🤙
@@vantikistudio Ha ha! Thanks. I never want to be "that guy" but we've got to guard our precious tiki heritage!

Awesome! Be warned: ceramics is addictive 😄
Way cool. It's going to be interesting using this one at the bar; that's if I'm lucky enough to score one.
🤞
well I got about 6 gallons of slip mixed up soon as I can get me a proper Olla made on the wheel I'll use it to make me a mold and give casting a shot
That’s fantastic! Enjoy the slip adventure!
@@vantikistudio lets wait see how it turns out before we get too exited lol
Love Love Love!
Thank you!
I have been waiting for a surfing bastard mug glad I waited. Looks great

Thank you so much!
Who built your studio?! Love it, can we get a studio tour?
Studio tour, you say? I have just the thing:

This really reminds me of your old one off mugs (that I always wanted one of but never got).
Thanks! I wanted to make the first mug of the year fun and playful. I figure we all have enough stress at the moment 😄
Quality work yo!
Thank you!
Oh so cool! When you got to the cracks I thought "oh no! That bastard has suffered enough!"
😂
Looking great, a nice take on one of my favorites!
Thank you kindly! I've always loved the original!
What website do you buy your monster clay from?
Do you recommend WED clay?

@@vantikistudio thank you!!
great work..^^ love it
Thanks!
Nice. Looks large, what might be the volume.
I'm aiming to match the original mug size - or as close as my stylized interpretation will allow. Remember, it shrinks 12% in the casting and firing.
2:33 - FRAGILE. Italian clay is the best clay. ;)
indeed!
I love it! Very cool! Lisa
thank you!
3:57 - Going to take a poke in the dark - a sphinx.
good guess!
10:02 - I might have to make a revision in my guess. LOL
:D
Is it a Easter Island head tiki mug?
Kind of... I’m thinking the classic mug it’s based on used a Rapa Nui/Easter Island Moai as a source.
Are you located in Vancouver? Guessing with the name "Van"Tiki? and if so would you take students to make tiki mugs ? :D
Ha! No - my last name is Van Ryzin 😁
Love your videos!
Glad you like them! Mahalo for watching!
You say your name is van Reisen. Do you happen to have Dutch ancestry?
I do! My Dutch ancestors came to the US around the time of the American Civil War (if I remember correctly)
CRACK HEAD! hahahahhah that looks so great!
✨🤙✨
