I can't speculate on when or why it started to be called "The Hobby" by people on the inside. But it is absolutely cringe and I try to avoid saying it. I think it's this way because I think the people who say it the most are (and don't get offended, anybody) the ones who take it too seriously or want to make it seem they take it seriously. This could be people who are into it hoping to make money. Or this could be people who want to be influencers. Or this could be people who want to seem like they're big s***. Whatever it is, it's these people who use the term the most and that's what makes it cringe. We all know these people are making card collecting out to be some big deal when, honestly, it isn't. And that's why it sits uneasily with us. This is a kiddie thing to do, collecting cards. Why are we trying to build it out as this big important, serious, consequential thing? We're wasting money and our lives by being into rectangular cardboard pictures of athletes. We need to touch grass, as the kids say. Also, dude: I love Stadium Club so much. What an amazing set that I'm going to waste way too much money on.
@ I just wanted to take a second to let you two know that I have a channel for 2 years and I have about 122k subscribers….its a grind but , I must say that you are well on your way, and keep up the great content, many creators are just ranting and being negative based on their own biases or experiences in “the hobby” but I come to this channel for the journalistic approach it’s much appreciated! Thanks 🙏
I've never had a problem or even thought it was an issue. "The Hobby" is for us "collectors" and it can't be changed. Don't worry about what others think outside "The Hobby". What do car guys call their thing, "The Culture"? In acting, its "The Industry" What are some other terms that those involved call it? I used to collect Lego, and I think they are called "Builders" now? Maybe not.
“The hobby” is a term/phrase said to a fellow collector to someone you know that collects cards etc. if your into stamps or models and your talking to someone that’s into the same, you can also say “the hobby”
I enjoy "The Hobby" by going to my "LCS" to "RIP" packs to add cards to my "PC", but first I need to check "Comps". All these are cringe to me. I guess I'm just too old.
As someone that got back into cards in 2017, I called it the hobby for a long time. I think the term “the hobby” really started to bother me around 2021 timeframe. I’ve tried since then (not always successfully) to call it “the industry” instead. That’s really what it is now given the vast focus on cards is economical rather than hobby focused. If I hear “the hobby” from a player collector or someone that’s been in a long time, then it sounds less cringe than someone I know entered in during the BOOM and has been focused on the dollars and cents. To be clear - I no longer collect anything unlike when I started up again in 2017. To me prices have gone so crazy that I don’t keep anything. It’s an industry that I use to hopefully help benefit other parts of my life.
In the world of trading cards, the term "the hobby" belongs to true collectors-the ones who value the art, history, and joy of collecting over sheer monetary gains. For investors and speculators, let's call it what it is: the sports card industry. I consider myself a hobby historian, with four decades and 55 years of collecting, hundreds of articles, and three price guides to my name. Maybe you've run out of real topics, but I’m responding to support the hobby and those who genuinely care about it, not just for clickbait.
Collecting baseball cards is similar to watching a baseball game these days. It's been made contemporary and many of the older crowd don't like change. The 'collector card market' is evolving and is still in its relatively early stages. Things don't change in these markets until outside forces cause change. Just like baseball. That sport ignored fans for decades on about every major issue. Nothing changed until outside forces caused change and one of those forces was advanced statistics and sabermetrics. Not that I buy into those stats all that much, it was still an outside force that caused the way baseball was presented on tv, in the media, etc. The biggest changes in baseball cards over the years have come from outside influences - like 1981 when Donruss entered the market or 1989 when Upper Deck entered the market. Then there was Score. These were outside forces making change by coming inside. Now we have Fanatics, another outside influence. And I guess we have Panini - back in the 80's and 90's Panini was an afterthought because they were a foreign company. That foreign company was an outside force that entered the US markets and influenced change. Then there were the bankruptcies and takeover period by, who else, the outside company Panini. Just like in baseball, the baseball card market is ran by a very few select individuals. These big companies don't like change. They want their guaranteed money every year. Whatever is beyond that is bonus. The baseball card market though, is not near as advanced as the baseball market. The baseball card market won't change until further outside influences - such as regulation and standardization, maybe that comes if Fanatics IPO ever issues. In the evolutionary timeline, things evolve at a ho-hum rate until there is a disturbance (outside influence). In 'the hobby', instead of a meteorite wiping out the dinosaurs (an outside influence caused a disturbance), we have meteorites Donruss1981 and UD1989 and the Panini meteor shower, whatever year that was. Besides Topps Now, what has any company came up with in the last 30 years? I'd be willing to bet Topps Now was caused by an outside influence as well.
I collect a relatively small number of cards. I probably have less than 100 cards in my PC. I don’t really consider that a hobby, since it really is a small part of my life. On the other hand, I buy and sell sports cards for a profit. I have a full time job, so my card business is really a side hustle, but it surely isn’t a hobby. When speaking broadly, I call it “the industry”. When talking casually, I simply call it “cards”. I also don’t like calling it “the hobby”, especially since I don’t consider it a hobby of mine. But let’s not overthink an alternate name for it! 😂
Pokemon is definitely in the "hobby" lots of collectors do both. It is cultish except we dont gave one person we follow... So anyways. Call it "alternate asset portifolio growth" much better marketing.
Not everyone calls it the hobby I’ve never used that term in my life. I’ve certainly used the sports card hobby or card hobby. That’s what it is. Maybe we could call it George 😂
Yeah I’m thinking from Boston… I don’t think there are direct flights. Last time I checked it was like 26 hours. Maybe there is something faster now. 🤷♂️
@LawrenceFZIII yeah that's true, didn't think of connecting flights and time of them.... Curiously I looked it up and yeah no direct and approx time is 22 hours
I like the pod. As much as I do all the stupid hobby terms and nicknames. Like POP for example. Or Comps or V-Wem or Zeon or JA or T-law or T-lance or J-Rod or a litany of neverending dumb a** names for card releases. The chase hits bangers are nauseating and as dopey as F.
Outsider who follows your HOBBY through the eyes of an investment stance as I do not own a single trading card or investment slab. A question to you please? You both mention having children, do they have any interest in this product line. Are they collectors, investors etc.? I have to decide if this card craze of the 2020's is here to stay or is this industry going to become a late 1980's to early 1990's repeat, thank you and I enjoyed listening to your energy and excitement. Lance.
My son does like to open cards every now and then of his favorite players and he does like the shiny stuff. I also built the 1986 fleer autographed set with him and he knows that will be something he has forever. -Nick
Calling it “the hobby” sounds much better than “a gambling addiction”
People call it the hobby because they’re too embarrassed to say out loud that they collect baseball cards.

I tell people I collect baseball cards even though I only buy soccer 😅

when will my cards pop and do they pop? What's the pop? Hop on Pop.
“The Addiction” is relatable to me 😅

No one in the sneaker world calls it “the hobby” or even a hobby. The take it very seriously and there is no attempt to make it seem casual in any way

Used to feel the same. Not anymore tho. Especially within our hobby, it’s “the hobby”. To someone on the outside, I clarify.
