Amazing video! Thanks for the shoutout, too! I’m so glad I joined the hobby community this past April. It has so greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the hobby and I know that’s the case for so many others too!
To me a registry is just a way that people try to keep up with the Joneses! I also noticed that some vintage content creators are like the modern content creators that make some not so rich collectors fell like crap because they cant afford the pre war stuff and fell like they dont get included into the vintage realm because they dont have bangers . At the end real collectors just want to show off there collection .
Yeah it can be a fine fuzzy line between showing cards, and showing off how much you spent. I turn some collectors off because it’s all about showing off their big cards….shallow!
you can't play unless you have bangers, hangers and chase hits. The register is so dopey it stings. If people like it more power to them. Seriously though. there is so much nice vintage for $50-200. Anyone can play. or chase the bong case hits for 600 per box which is a complete waste of money IMHO.
@@BringingTheHeat-VBC yes there is a lot of vintage you can get but I been watching a lot of vintage content creators but some I feel are out of touch like old Geoff Wilson . My point is look I got this Ty Coob T206 look at me but if you come around here with your 1975 Jim Rice rookie your a peasant . If you don’t have cool cards you ain’t part of the club.
@@svenpatrick1637 My personal take: I feel like people try to set too many rules in this hobby. Collect what you love. If I wanted to see people with the same cards as me I could just look at my cards and stay off RUclips. Do you like art museums or dislike them because "peasants" can't afford Monets for their house?
Great conversation, as usual guys. I think people need to realize that in terms of being in the hobby to "invest/make money" that ship has sailed. Spend your money in the hobby the way you want to spend it, don't let others make your decision. "Be Your Own Influencer"! As for the National location, I think Rosemont is ideal and I like everything about it. Shuttle from the airport, can walk to the show, restaurants around there. Why don't they open the National at 9:00 AM to everyone? That would be my change.
Thank you Darren and Graig for the nice words and shoutout. Yall are the best. I loved the video. The only thing I would add to the gold panning example is it doesn’t cost you 3 times the cost of the actual gold you might find just to go panning for that possible gold find. These hobby boxes have gotten so expensive that people are spending so much money to just have a possibility of getting that big hit. There is no way that model is sustainable unless you become a degenerate and are always looking for the next hit like an addictive gambler. Just my two cents.
Hey guys, enjoyed watching this exchange of ideas. I started my channel because I was having so much fun watching, I thought it would be fun to show some of my collection and share ideas. Keep up the great work.
For improving the hobby. The biggest concern, however, imo is, bringing down price some of the newer products for, the younger, and potential younger collectors. I think the older collectors who collect vintage are still able to, collect what they like. But kids, and teenagers that enter the hobby are hopefully the future of the hobby. And there's already the gambling aspect, and I am not sure if it's too late, to combat that. I try to be optimistic though.
Enjoyable conversation, guys! I like the idea of an independent registry, would be very cool. The hour flew by. I’m now picturing Graig in waders panning for gold 😆
Money is the issue as always. The average collector has been priced out. Luckily, I have been collecting since 1968. So I have some vintage cards in my collection. But a newer collector would need to be very wealthy to accumulate vintage cards at this point. Greedy business and greedy personal collectors are to fault for the state of the "hobby" of card collecting. I go to local card shops and card shows, usually combing through the bargain bins.
Great stuff, guys! I like your combined registry idea. I wouldn’t mind having a RUclips card community app for content and non-content creators. I really feel like this community is growing more and more every day. Have a great weekend!
The hobby would be much improved if we could monetize or create liquidity for our collections. I have a nice collection but have challenges in creating liquidity with it the way I do with my stocks and other investments. Where can I easily and quickly sell? That is what I need to gain comfort…especially with my wife, etc.
Hi Graig. As I’m watching your video, many thoughts come to mind. First is how much you care for the hobby - especially the vintage genre. For me, collecting is about chasing that one card and the friends you create along the way. Just like the past Sacramento card show where I ran into you and your dad when I bought that 1991 Ken Griffey. That card show was me and my wife’s first ever card show. As a collector, I like to sell cards I don’t care about to fund the cards I do. First, as a married man, I have to be responsible and accountable to my wife when buying cards. So I often walk a fine line when buying. Thanks for another great informative video. Happy collecting
yes you do have a responsibility to your family first. This is key in the hobby financially. 20-30 years from now, you'll have more me time and money. Then you can do what you want, LOL.
How about having two Nationals per year. One east coast and one west coast. Doesn’t even have to be at the same time of year. California and Florida could be the destinations. Both states have plenty of hotels and modern convention centers. For those who would be worried about time with the family you could meet up with them at Disney, Universal, the beach, etc.
Really enjoyed this video, Graig. I especially liked the part about having an online/cloud location to show my collection. And the thought of being able to choose what I share about my collection (value/price for instance) would be valuable. And be able to find a specific card using filters would be awesome. And it shouldn't be that hard. I remember when I first heard about comc I thought it was that. Then I went there and found out it was mostly a marketplace. Though I suppose I could use it show off my cards as long as I was willing to send them in and not be able to easily hold them. And "price" my 1987 Donruss Pete Ladd card at $1500 (ungraded, probably about a 6-8). LOL. Graig, as a 49ers fan I am going to ask a polarizing question. Trey Lance? As a player and as a "collectable" player. And, yes, the answer can be different between him as a player and him as a person whose cards could still be widely collectable.
Good conversation guys. Im afraid all my suggestions to improve the hobby are "grumpy old man" suggestions. Set collectors are being pushed out because the sets are worthless. In 25 years theyll still be worthless like most 90's sets are now. Player collectors are being pushed out because you cant buy 300 Aaron Judge cards a year. About all thats left is trying to find that 1 great card.
I’m pretty sure 3D 80s Kid never told anyone not to buy all the rookies they want. I think he just wants to avoid the premium expense of rookie cards and wants others to not feel like they’re less than for choosing the same thing. Great conversation!
My bad John. I misspoke. I didn't mean that you tell people not to buy rookie cards. I meant it more around how people make choices with what they choose to buy.
@@returntocollectingAdditionally, FYI if I respond to any comment using 3rd person like I’m Rickey Henderson do not take it as a fully serious response.

Honest question: Are there any modern *collectors*, per se? Defined as people who “collect” as in, to accumulate for its own sake regardless of monetary value. Did anyone build a complete 2024 Topps set and put it in pages in a binder?
I think some of the bad things of collecting, are a few power players that make the standard of what grading companies hold the most weight. Too much emphasis on grades, and certain power players in the hobby downplaying the prices on cards that are worth more than they are saying it's worth. Example , just because someone can pick up a hof junkwax rookie, a dollar, doesn't mean that's all its worth. Example I can pick items up at the dollar store, that cost a lot more at a regular store. But don't value cards at a dollar store perspective, just because one guy at a card show is selling cards for five times less than what they are actually worth. Don't say that is the standard of what those cards are worth.
if you didn't have any rules, you'd have a very low eye appeal collection like Mike Petty. I do actually have 1 rule. The card needs to have some redeeming quality I can hang my hat on.
