    *I was able to use the stop to cut my pieces all the same **MyBest.Tools** Only let the blade come to a complete stop before lifting it back up otherwise it might 'catch' the work and inadvertently move the stop. Used a second clamp for holding.*

    I bought these plans last winter and built this array a year ago. While there are some issues (e.g. dust containment), that's more of an issue related to the saw than the design of this station. This is the best addition to my shop since my first table saw! So much storage and a great dedicated space that is always a key component in nearly every project. 5 Stars Jay!

    In the 18 or so months since you built this, a surprising number of other youtubers have used your design (usually with a little tweak here or there).
    I'd say thats a sign of a good design.

      I tend to like Jay's designs more than others because they are often functionally appropriate and well thought out and not unnecessarily complicated... which makes them perfect for the shop. I'd rather spend time building other things than shop furniture so Jay's my go to.

    I bought the plans for this build a long time ago and just started building late this last December. I'm almost done and all I can say is: Wow! Wish I had built this sooner. The storage space is amazing. Great design, well laid out plans, and extremely sturdy. If you're on the fence on this build, do it! You'll kick yourself for not building it sooner. Thanks Jay!

    I really appreciate this video. There are tons of great build videos out there, but not enough where builders explain why they built things the way they did and how the piece is meant to be used. It’s great to hear the explanations, because it helps the rest of us consider all the different ways in which we might use a similar piece, and therefore allows us to consider how we might modify the design for our own needs. Thanks for doing this!

      Apart with having to deal with a different approach to dust collection the set-up lends itself to a flip top style that can include your planer "stored" in the open space underneath the miter saw.

    Jay thanks again for the video. It was the push I needed to upgrade my miter saw situation. I bought the plans, the drawer slides and adjustable feet for the Ultimate Miter Saw Station then decided I wanted my station on wheels. I ended up with a Bosch 12 inch glide to replace my Dewalt 708 then I ended up with building the Rockler miter saw station. It fits my situation. My old saw needed almost 48 inch depth with dust collection this one is 24" deep ,1/2 half the space WIN!!.

    I'm in the middle of this build and I agree with what you're saying. This miter saw station is amazing. One suggestion I might make is to your plan layouts. Number the pieces on the cut diagram and then on the assembly diagram would help. I individually numbered them as I was cutting and then marked them on the the plywood. So when assembling the drawers, i knew what went with what. Otherwise, the plans are awesome!

  • @gohuskies583
    @gohuskies583 7 лет назад

    I agree with your assertion that you need the most support to the left of the blade. That was my discovery as well when I built a miter saw set up. I rarely need more than 4-5 feet of support on the right. I like your plans! and go Red Wings!

    If I could fit something like this in my shop, I'd build it in a heartbeat. Awesome design. I do have one suggestion though. If you were to refer to all you drawers by row, top row being R1, next R2, next R3... etc, and the subsequent drawers as D1, D2, D3, etc, you could refer to the 2nd drawer of your 2nd row... as R2-D2!

Also, I had my nose done about a year and a half ago. Totally worth it. I had broken it at least three times due to seizures so it was all jacked up. Here's to a speedy recovery.

    Good and informative video, Jay! And no sawdust problems. How bout some other "shop downtime" tasks, like tool maintainance, bearing/bushing replacements, cleaning of table saw reunions, etc. Lots of stuff that would be interesting that don't entail a bunch of dust. And that are basic to preparing for the more fun things. Get healed up quick!

    You could make thin MDF panels with magnets that fill in the gaps on the left and right side. It would probably help with the dust spill out and would be easy to remove. I saw another wood worker do this for his contractor style table saw. Thought it was pretty smart.

    I really like the design you came up with. I purchased your plans but have to modify them. I'll need to cut the large drawers down due to space limitations on the right, and I'll probably do away with some of the upper drawers due to a 48" wide window right where T2 and T3 are. Same with the upper cubbys. When I get it done I'll be sure to send photos. (I know, you can't wait!). Take care with the recovery.

    Jay great discussion on the saw station,I drank the kool aid and bought the plans and ordered the slides they are the replacement for the ones you listed. I also bought the Kreg Foreman and a new Bosch glide. Yes i know i could have stuck with my old Kreg k3 and Dewalt 708 but both are getting long in the tooth. I currently have the New Yankee hutch and hope to incorporate a version of the JBMSS to work work together with the Norm hutch. The big change I am making is the top drawers will not have as deep of draft as the bottom will be flush against the wall because of the Bosch not needing the extra depth. The new slides for the top will just be shorter I will order from the same place. great people to work with and super reasonable prices. I will keep you up to date on the progress. I haven't put it to paper yet but I think 16 inch top drawers will provide plenty of useful storage. Also glad to know the nose it doing it's job better. #8 forever

    Jay, you also mentioned that you think you'd rather have an older radial arm saw. You said the same thing in Tool talk #7 also. If you have a friend that has one, I'd advise you to go play with theirs for a while. I had one for years, but after I got my Delta compound miter saw, my radial only saw dust collecting on it. the only thing I miss about it is the ability to hog out dados in large lumber pieces, and I don't do that any longer. I've still got the delta but have recently upgraded to the 12" Hitachi. I like it much better. Plus I don't need such a deep work surface with it. My $.02 adjusted for inflation. YMMV. Cheers.

    Hi Jay, I purchased your plans earlier tonight and they will be a huge help and heavily relied upon as I begin building my own miter saw station. I have one question though.... the wall that I need to build it along has a 3" tall x 50" deep "step up" formed in the concrete. In your opinion, would the 14" difference between the front of the bottom cabinets and the edge of the "step up" be enough to stand on and use the saw comfortably?

    Awesome build Jay. I have a new miter saw ordered and will buy your plans to give me a starting point for a similar station. One question though: What height is the top of the miter saw surface and side platforms. I can't decide to go with 39" or maybe even 42". My current setup is around 40", which works okay, as I am 6' tall . I want to get maximum storage below the saw, yet still have a comfortable work height.

    I am interested in building this miterstation with all the drawers at some point. For now I just need to build the main frame and add the drawers later. Now one thing I would like to have as an option with your design is the ability to roll the miter saw in and out of the overall frame/station. So if I want to work outside the workshop I want to be able to roll it out and flip up wings for the infeed/outfeed functionality. When I don't want to be outside I want to be able to roll the miter right back in between where you have it sitting right now. Any thoughts on doing something like this? I am a hobbyist just getting my wings wet.

    A couple of question. How did you go about planning for the different storage areas of the station? Did you lay out all of your like type tools and sundries on a table/bench and figure out what drawer sizes would work best and I don't think I've ever noticed any cushion mats on the floor and since you're working on a cement do you plan on getting any? It may not bother you yet, but you may want to consider them before it does because someday it will.

In the docs you sent you mentioned you made the saw platform 4" wider on each side, is that a valid number for all saws? And my other question the swing over the front? How did you calculate that

    I purchased these plans a while ago and can't remember where I downloaded them lol I think its on my tablet I ll have to look when I get home. I am going to probably use most of the plan but I already have 2 Husky 4 drawer cabinets that I would like to incorporate into the design. My garage is a small one car unit but I think it would be more efficient with the drawers and dedicated station, my unit is currently on a roll around cabinet I made but its for my old saw so my new one doesn't exactly fit. As usual I love the stuff you do keep it up and feel better.

    I built a smaller version of your miter saw station. my wall isn't long enough for the full build. Anyways my original miter saw was 10" sliding compound Miter (only bevels one way) later I upgraded to a 12" Hitachi sliding compound miter (bevels both ways) some adjustability or some kind of modular design (where the saw goes) would've helped with the transition.
    BTW If you move, what do you plan on doing with the miter station? leave it or break it down and take with you?

    Hey Jay, I have one question specific to this build. By the way, I can't wait to see more of your builds, they are awesome.
    If you had the opportunity to modify this cabinet for a Radial Arm Saw, what would you do differently? I am not talking about the small details such as the height and depth of the hole for the saw, I am talking about the features themselves.
    I have bought recently a Radial Arm Saw with an "accessory threaded shaft" in the back of the motor, thus, I am thinking of creating a cabinet along the lines of the one you built (with less storage though) for it, since my Miter Saw is junk. So, I wanted to know what would you do if you were to build it specifically for a Radial Arm Saw, since you said you wanted one for this build in the first place on another comment.
    Thanks!

    I currently have 14' of cabinets to one side of my miter saw. I have drawn a line with a straight edge off of my mitter saw fence where my fence should go. I noticed sometimes when I'm cutting a longer board and put it against my miter saw fence it goes past my fence line because the board is crooked. So if the fence was there I wouldn't be able to cut a square cut. What do u do.

    Regarding the right-hand drawers, I find myself wondering why you put the larger on top, as most drawer units have the larger on the bottom. But after watching this I'm guessing that is something about the first order of accessibility?

    • @JayBates2
      @JayBates2  7 лет назад

      The B3 drawers are the same size. The top one looks larger because the front is taller. I allowed more room above it in the event that more bracing was necessary below the top surface due to the longer span. It isn't necessary though.

    Hi Jaye, Jon here (wooden Xmas decoration guy), did you glue and screw the bottom of your drawers into the sides rather than cutting a groove for them to slide into? Which is best in your opinion? Particularly for heavy storage? I’m making in the middle of making your mitre station at the moment.

    • @JayBates2
      @JayBates2  6 лет назад

      What's up Jon! I glued and screwed them from the bottom into the sides. Plenty strong enough. The only downside is that it's ugly when viewed from the side. Not a problem on shop furniture.

    in a tool talk you mentioned you would rather have a radial arm saw, how would you modify this station to accommodate one?

    • @JayBates2
      @JayBates2  7 лет назад +1

      I'm not so sure on the radial arm saw thing. I think I'd rather have one but....
      As far as modifying this one it depends on the radial arm saw. This was built around the Ridgid 12" sliding miter saw which was the largest miter saw I've ever seen. There is about 27.5" from the miter saw fence to the back wall which I think would accommodate a radial arm saw. You'd just have to incorporate the base in the area between the two base cabinets.

      Jay Bates 2 thanks for the quick reply! Ever since I got my radial arm saw Christmas before last I've wanted to make a station like this for it, but I'm not sure I can take on a project of this size yet. I really appreciate the thought and thoroughness you put into videos.

    Just curious if consideration is given to uneven garage flooring in the build. Thanks!

      Yes. Each base cabinet has homemade leveling feet.

      Just one more question I promise. I don't know if I can dedicate the 144" or so inches you have for the entire length. What's the minimum length on either side of the saw that would still be effective? Is 8' on one side absolutely necessary? Thanks again!

      I have this one installed: amzn.to/2iugfCT It was a lot less expensive buying locally at Lowes though. I think I paid around $65

    I almost never see anyone put drawers under the saw. Is there any reason for this? The only ones I can think of is of dust or scraps.

    I’m late to the party...wonder why you didn’t build in “kick” along the bottom? I hate not being able to stand closer to my upper cabinets.

    Jay, you made a comment a while back after seeing someone else's shop and wished you would have built your station on a different wall to maximize space. Any plans to move it? or is it just not worth the effort for the small amount of convenience?

    • @JayBates2
      @JayBates2  7 лет назад

      Return on investment isn't worth it. Too much hassle to move and I don't gain much at all.

      LMAO - join the club. I can move things but the whole copy thing and then making unique so you can change one oiece without changing the other and keeping the orientation of each piece straight in your head. It's a mess.Best advice I can give is keep using it and you'll get to a point where you are semi functional with it - that's where i am

    • @latherookie

      Exactly, Me and computers don't mix. Just trying to go to another piece, forget to copy, make group, and wonder why first piece is moving eee gads.
