Super Easy Stop Block For A Miter Saw - 197

I had every intention to not make a video this week and instead focus on my miter saw station plans. But there's only so much sitting in front of a computer and working on plans that anyone can take. I ventured out to the shop to just take a break from working on the plans only to end up talking myself into making another video. The quickest thing I could think of was to add a stop block to my miter saw station. Adding a stop block to a miter saw station is incredibly handy for producing accurate repeatable cuts.

It's really satisfying to watch a craftsman like Jay Bates and see him using tools from Harbor Freight and other tools I have lying around the shop, and is able to crank out awesome things.
I would love a mitre saw station just to make that stop block system, it's brilliant.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Incredibly awesome build Jay. I have come to trust the videos you produce and more so the things that you build. There are so many people in this world, ( me included ) that desire to have a better workshop working within a budget. These builds Jay help us to reach these goals. Very nicely done. Your videos have good audio, are well lighted, and you speak in a clear voice.
For the fellow who ask the question about the sticky back tape measure, did you notice it said Starrett which is the top of the line when it comes to measuring, not harbor freight. And I'm sure he is using Carbo random tip blades which are at least 1000 times harder than aluminum. I cut 1/4 inch aluminum with my chop saw and never a problem. This guy really knows his stuff.
I absolutely adore your miter saw station. Great planning and execution. The stop-block system only adds to it. I hope I will be able to build something alike soon. Thank you for sharing!
I bought the plans and will build this station in the next couple of months. Love it! The birds singing in the background is icing on the cake. I’m pretty sure there is a wood shop in Heaven!
Awesome tip with the painter's tape to prevent the chipping, really shows the importance of test cuts and trial and error
started off by seeing your instructable on cabinet making. now after 3 1/2 hours of reading more instructables, your website, and videos, here I am. I just got started playing around with wood. Your instructables are easy to follow, and your videos easy to watch. In addition to all of this it sure seems like your pretty much a master! thanks for sharing all this with everyone.
Matt Contreras Thank you very much Matt. Be careful though. Creating is addicting!
Really smart design Jay. This is a solid miter station with a great fence system. Its durable and extremely accurate. Thanks for sharing
Love the adjustable portion of the stop block. I never thought of that, but I am sure it comes in handy when you get a thinner (or thicker) blade for the chop saw. Nice job on the video, as well. Got plenty of great info, with no fluff. Thanks for the great ideas.
Great Idea with the T Track. I think I will follow your example and fit one to my fence, much tidier than the block of wood and a clamp. Keep up the great work J.. we do appreciate it
Very well done and wonderfully explained. Thanks. I also liked the text motion matching when you were running the bamboo spline thru the table saw.
That is by far the best miter station I've seen. And maybe I should say most impressive, at least in my opinion. Really nice job. I can say I will be using a lot of your ideas for this in my garage. Thanks Jay.
This is the best system I have ever seen! Kudos, your shop looks amazing. Thanks!
The spline for keeping the block aligned is great. This will be a huge time saver in the long run.
I really love your mitre saw station. I like how organized and tidy your work shop is!
Best saw station and use of storage I've ever seen. Awesome project!
Best saw station and use of storage I've ever seen. Enjoyed the build and thanks for your time sharing.
Lee Waterman Thank you Lee. Much appreciated.
Lee Waterman this mitre saw station is a legend!
I normally don't get jealous of other people's stuff... it's just good to see someone with cool stuff and doing good things with it. In this case however, I am so green with envy over your new workstation setup. It's so well laid out and constructed. Very very impressive! Thanks for sharing the build process - possibly one day I'll have the space, lumber (money) and time to make something similar.
Great job. The entire station is one great design that will make working in the shop faster and a lot oh f fun.
Those are the greatest drawer pulls I have ever seen. Well done, sir!
It's been close to two years since I made this miter saw station so I shot a follow up video covering some of the common questions. See it here: ruclips.net/video/PzLR4Z5y7QY/видео.html
Great Miter Station! New to woodworking and love your videos! Thank you for posting them!!
Really like the Red Wing drawer handles, love the whole set up great job.
I'm about to start making my stop block system and it will be similar to this. I love the text overlay and your sense of humor is awesome.
Have you seen the Best Fence by FastCap? When I get ready to upgrade I might try a homemade version of that. If not, I'll just buy the Best Fence.
Glad you labeled the red arrow. Wasn't sure what that was. Outstanding miter saw station. I have miter saw envy now.
Pete Nilsen Gotta cover all the bases.
This is the best god-damn miter station I've ever seen. Thank you for taking the time to edit and post. You're the man!
This whole series is the exact definition of "if your gonna do a job you might as well do it right" great job man I'm loving this project.
That is an A-1 chop saw station, Jay. Love that stop block system; I want to steal that idea for my own saw-station someday. Nice work!
Great idea, whenever I can accompany your videos, my name is Paul and I love woodworking live in southern Brazil, big hug.
Very nice set-up Jay - I really like the easy of dialing it in.
Good job Jay! that station is coming together very nicely
Very innovative. Loved the whole build, awesome project.
Nothing like starting a Sunday morning with a Jay Bates video. Another great project, man. Thanks for the videos!
bheraty05 Thanks!!
You have great pace to the production. Never feel the need to skip dead zones. Good stuff!
Xyienced Thank you for the feedback. I very much appreciate it.
Great video. I need to build a miter saw station as well. Mines going to be significantly smaller. I can't dedicate an entire wall to mine but I've got lots of ideas for it because of this build. Thanks again.
Awesome setup! When I modify my saw station when I get a new saw I think I'm going to incorporate something like this.
Great system, Jay. I like the very refreshing bird sound for the background, much better than any music. Thanks for sharing : )
Best miter saw station I've seen yet. I will definitely be using some of your ideas when I build my own. Only thing I would change is adding a shallow dado for the tape measure so the stop block is not rubbing against it and wearing the print off of it.
I thought of this after I made the video and article and ended up putting a shallow dado in the back of the stop block. Good thinking though. You're the first one to mention it.
Love the new shirt design. I think that settles it. I want that one and the sketchup one.
Oh, and great miter setup. :) I have two of those Starrett measure stix waiting to be installed, but they have to wait until I get my new miter saw...
I got the Rockler right-and-left reading 36" two-pack when I made my table saw fence. I'm glad I found these Starrett ones on Amazon because they are WAY more precise and easier to read.
Looks pretty accurate to me. Well done! That's one awesome Miter Saw station!
In process of adding a fence to my miter saw table and I like your ideas. Great job
Continuing to not doing things by halves. Nice work Jay, the station is coming to completion. Makes me think about how to better utilise my drop saw.
love the red arrow.... almost spit my soda on the screen... great video as usual.
Awesome idea. I’m new to wood working and this will help out a lot. Great video.
Jay Bates Great project and wonderful idea, thanks for sharing.
I can't described the jealousy enough,I wish I owned my home so I could justify building a station like that cause I wouldn't wanna have to move it.Very nice and you're videos are always top quality.
Jay this workstation should surely handle about anything you could ask for. The storage system is also great. Good job as usual!
Wow, you have a real gift for clear, and cohesive instruction!
+TRASHURE Thank you very much.
+Jay Bates , and good inventive ingenuity!
Great video and killer set up. Thanks for taking the time to share the knowledge!
Jay that is a nice setup on the stop block.
Very cool idea Jay! Love the miter station
Very nice, I'll keep that one in mind for whenever I do make my self a Miter saw workstation..
Jay I love your videos they are so details what a big help , thanks
Awesome. Glad you got a good stick on ruler. I'v been burnt a few times buying one and later realizing parts or the whole thing was off.
Happy Easter from Italy to all your family!
Great job dude, the stop block is really cool!
cool beans Jay - miter saw station is pretty sick!
The whole cabinet unit is awesome. Furniture with precision machine components built in.
Very cool step for this awesome project.
Makes me want to build a mitre saw station as well, (even though I almost never use the mitre saw because my table saw sled is just much more accurate). Nice design for a stop block!
I also really liked the red arrow detail! Nice build! Wish I had the space.
Came to see some ideas for quick throwaway stop blocks, stayed for the whole video. Nice job.
Hiya, the 'Red arrow' had me laughing out loud for a good 10 minutes and then chucking to myself for a good half-hour, thank you...Great job by the way.
Terrific setup and excecution.
Cheers,
Dave
this is so badass. way to go. love your work
Well done as always! Very inspirational and the Red wing stuff nice! Here in Redford Mi.
HI Jay,
When using the painter's tape one thing I've found that significantly reduces chip out is to burnish the tape onto the surface. I regularly have a Sharpie marker in my pocket so I use the side of it to apply firm pressure to the tape. I've found this to reduce tear out a lot.
Have a great day from Lansing, Michigan,
Russ
Jay, excellent design. Well thought out.
To avoid the tear out run your first shallow cut backwards through the table saw. Sounds crazy I know but trust me it works...
Great build buddy. Ryan
Nice job young man.Well done indeed!
Awesome Video! Thanks for taking the time to make it!
Precision = good! You inspire me! Great video!
Awesome Wood Things Thanks!
Well done Jay love the outcome
very creative and well designed.
Very nice, this is the best Ive seen for the type of fence I'm planning.
I love the door handles :)
Great video, thanks.
Very cool project Jay!!
Nicely done Jay!
I like that set up :-) I have been working on how to set mine up and Dad kept on at me having it all on wheels so I will be showing him your video on how you have your setup and then just maybe he will listen to me on how we can set ours up :-) thanks for the great help and ideas :-)
Your setup is mint!
Great video. I like your design!
Real slick. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for that Jay , good stuff , will make a Mitre station similar to yours , probably try this great idea.
very nice, simple and ingenious contraption. thank you for posting. i think ill copy that
Turned out very nice your miter station. Now it looks like a work shop and not loger like a gararge ;-). About the scoring cut: If you move the wood in the opposite direction accros the dado blade you avoid any tear out. Actually this is true for any rotating saw blade be it a miter saw, circular saw or table saw.
Nice touch with the stop block system. Also, it's nice for a change to work with the garage door open, huh?
This was good Jay. Keep it up
nice solid block Great work !!
Nice job! Well thought-out design.
Don Fillenworth Thank you.
That is brilliant! Now I just need to buy a mitter saw too make this!
very impressed. Nice work.
That is pretty damn sharp bud,oh ya and those bolts grow feet and run away.It happens, lol!
Red arrow 😂
Great idea and execution.
Love this system! Great idea
Excellent job thanks for sharing
Awesome! was wondering how i was going to do it. video saved me!
Whoa, that was super nice!
Great video Jay.
Neat. Given me plenty of ideas for my own situation.
