R.I.P. to Jim Croce (1943-1973) and his awesome guitar collaborator Maury Muehleisen (1949-1973) who tragically died that day.

I was a little girl, playing in the garage while my dad worked on the car, radio playing. They announced Jim's passing. It was the first time I ever saw my dad cry 😢RIP JIM🌹💃

My senior year in high school, the next day hundreds of kids were upset over the news of Croce death, some of the boys and girls were in tears, saying his songs meant so much, funny or serious, really touched a nerve or the heart. Kids of all backgrounds too. I now reflect how kids in 1959 must have felt the same way when Buddy Holly's plane crashed.

If I remember correctly, this song is based on an incident from when Croce was in the National Guard. One of his fellow soldiers got a “Dear John” letter from his girlfriend (perhaps fiancé), breaking it off and telling him that she is now with his best friend. In the song he thinks wants to let them that he’s fine and he’s over it. But during the interaction with the operator he realizes that its not something he wants to do; the “something in my eyes, you know it happens every time I think about the love that I thought would save me” tells us that he’s still hurting, no matter what he tries to tell himself. I’ve always loved Jim Croce and his storytelling.

Another anthem from Jim is "I've Got A Name." If you want a little more rocking vibe, go for "Don't Mess Around with Jim" or "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown." A gentle soul, gone too soon.

"I've Got A Name" is a great song but Jim did NOT write that song. It was written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox, who talked Jim into doing the song, were already basking in the enormous sales of Roberta Flack’s version of their Killing Me Softly.

I was almost 7 when he died and I remember where I was when I found out. My sister is 7 years older than me & she told me-- we just hugged each other, crying. He made such an impact, even to kids. I always feel lucky I grew up in that era.

From what I've seen, this song was inspired when he was in the military and a lot of guys would call their girlfriends from basic training and got broken up with over the phone! Crazy! He died a few months before I was born, but his impact on me is very real!

Back in the day, hotels and motels would provide their customers complimentary matches and disposable ink pens, which usually had the name, address, and phone number of the establishment on the matchbook cover, and on the plastic outer cover of the pen itself.
Lovers who wanted to keep in touch would write names and phone numbers on the inside of the matchbook cover. It would thus be concealed from others close to that individual.

Definitely watch the live performance, which shows you not only the purity of Jim's singing but also the vital role played by Maury Muehleisen, whose background vocals and intricate guitar picking elevate the music. The live performance features only the those two men singing and playing guitar so you can really appreciate the beauty of their talent. Until he partnered with Maury, Jim struggled to get recorded and played mainly at bars; Maury elevated the music and their performances, and you can see that when they play live.

The tempo of this song might be faster than the first song you heard, but it’s really a sad song. I went to college 1971-1975. I can remember the halls in the girls’ dorms just blaring with folk music….James Taylor, Jim Croce, Judy Collins, Carly Simon, Carole King….and of course some great rock, too. Good memories from a time of exceptional music.

Back then, people smoked everywhere so most businesses had matchbooks with their info on them, and gave them out for free. It's something that was free and everywhere with a blank space to jot down a name and number. There were no cell phones and most people didn't carry around paper and pen. There were also no phones that had memory on them until the 80s when you could store like 10 numbers in your house phone so you didn't have to dial important or frequently called numbers.
For today's world, imagine if we didn't have cell phones and still used pay phones and other land lines. We'd probably be writing down names and numbers on the backs of business cards since those are everywhere now. Since people don't smoke as much these days, the matchbooks became business cards in little stands at the front.

Drew, what you do and what you are are two very different things. Everyone here’s done stupid things-I certainly have. IMHO, mistakes are proof of trying and likewise “stupid things” are (well, can be) proof of effort. The question is do you learn from it? If not, then there’s a problem. But (pulling numbers out of my butt) if you need to try 100 times to get that one success-then you move forward to the next step-you can look at it in one of two ways. One hundred failures, or progress. I know which way I prefer…
Crutches are just evidence of that trying. Or living. You pick. 😁😇😛
Da song. Back in the day before butane lighters, when seemingly everybody smoked (I loath cigarettes and get sick from 2nd hand smoke so it’s a subject deep in years for me) when a lighter was either a precious metal flint and lighter fluid affair you could pocket and flick, and with good reliability get a small, serviceable flame. Enough to light a ciggy or a leaf if camping. Or it was matches. Books of matches were freely available at pretty much all eating/drinking establishments with the name & address info of the owner
Imprinted-they ranged from serviceable to quite fancy. And yes, as “freebies” one could always grab a few as the bill was paid (or when leaving in the swankier restaurants since you would have settled the bill at your table) and they were an easy and common way to pass a name, number or address.
As to the music, this IS a lovely song-but in terms of emotional punch and caressing the heartstrings I don’t think Time in a Bottle can be beat (certainly as far as Croce’s music is concerned). That said, taste is very individual and Right is what’s right for you. Being open to listening to new, unfamiliar things-trying them out as it were-is what is most important.
(One day, perhaps, you’ll let someone guide you to/through the music of the high baroque era-JS Bach, in particular. That’s Europe, 400 years ago. Sorry, no music videos.
😲 😂 If you like(d) what you heard, you would be better equipped to listen to the greats that followed-which ultimately lead to the classical component of modern popular music, including jazz and… well, really, all music. Consider: historically, what we call classical music today was either sacred (church) music or the popular music of the day-a combo of our broadway and pop-rock equivalent. We just call it classical today. Back then, if was… Music.)
