I seriously think the city 4-1 game at the ethihad in 2023 scarred arteta. Simve then he has been so obsessed with control and keeping men behind the ball when we attack that it destroys the threat we can create. He was a young manager then and the pressure he faced in that title race may have permanently affected his tactical ideas but he has to understand that we have 3 of the best defensive players in the world (rice saliba and Gabriel) and he has to take more risks in posession especially when we are established and having sustained pressure. No one is asking for ange ball but we need to be more risky and desisve in the final third
Spot on. Arteta has fallen into the trap of thinking possession wins you games. Nothing is permanent though. He can come out of this he just needs to be made aware that it’s impacting him. That title race definitely impacted his psyche. Think the team is feeling a bit of it as well
Bang on. You can see it in every transfer since then. Not a chance does mikel merino or even Calafiori (though I do rate him) get signed before that game
@cianomugzy975 exactly I think the question we have to ask with arteta is whether or not he is willing to change. Also of he has the tools to play a different way (I don't think he does. We have way too many attackers that have stagnated or regressed and we need new players in that position) and then it comes down to whether the board will give him the tools he needs to make those tactical changes
I will love mikel watch this, he sacrified many of our speed plays in 2022/23 for control as he thought them unsustainable and saw them lead to burnout. But we are overly slow and wait for opponents to get into shape and number 8/9 in their box
When I compare this team to the Wenger title winning teams, and even the teams that 'nearly' achieved, it's clear to me that we lack in that 'chaos factor' that allowed Wengers teams to be so threatening going forward. I suspect that Mikel, having played under Arsene, knows exactly what he needs to do in order to make us a more potent attacking force. The problem being, he would have to accept that we would be more exposed defensively... At the same time though, we are conceding goals anyway, so the caution isn't working
So true and looking at the Liverpool model. Might as well just outscore the opponent. Yeah, concede 3 but we’ll thrash you with 6 or 7. Also, this doesn’t happen in every game. There are only a hand full of games you might have to be a bit more cautious in but as for the rest. When you have a really good attacking lineup, just let the fellas go and express themselves and score ridiculous goals
I am a relatively new Arsenal fan. I have only started watching Football since 2022 and chose to support Arsenal. While the previous season was exhilarating, this season (especially the New Castle game) had depleted my excitement for the club.. Until I watched your video! This video! I have been watching cricket for 15 years now and Football for 2 years and have never seen a more insightful and sincere analysis video that this. And I am happy to report, by the end of the 15th minute of this video I have fallen back in love with the club and the sport but more so, this channel. Keep up the good work! Thank you.
Relax. You came at the right time when most things are in the positive trajectory. I've been a fan since '98 so lots of roller coaster rides I've been riding and I can assure you that this team that Arteta builds is potentially the best team since The Invincibles.
Your analysis of Arteta as calculated is spot on. His approach is to use the most optimized method - the one that's most likely to produce a predictable outcome. And this is holding the team back. One area is just random shots outside the box, we rarely do that not because the players can't, but because they're coached to pass the ball around looking for a certain way to enter the box and score. The other way I've seen it is in the argument that we scored the most goals last season so we didn't need a PROPER 9. Scoring the most goals in a season can be achieved by scoring 6 against Sheffield and West Ham when the rehearsed system is working perfectly well, but having a proper hungry 9 will get you goals against stupid low blocks where the system isn't working and all you need is half a chance. That's what City had with Haaland, and that's what we've been lacking. We optimize so much for the system that we don't factor in a plan for when the system isn't working.
Kvara seems to be on his way to PSG, we should just pay £50m for Nico Williams and maybe summer we go for Gyokeres instead of Isak cause Newcastle are never selling him to us and if they do that’s £150m while you can get 2 good players for the same amount
@@mengienghinamwaami4894No way would I want us to pay for Nico Williams, Martinelli is better than that guy, because he had a decent 2024 Euros campaign, doesn't mean he's him
Your point about how Mikel sees football as a mathematical model where things even out over the course of a season, is partly what makes him a poor cup manager, in the sense that things can happen in a cup match but if you lose, you are out whereas the league gives you another chance at redemption. He would rather have a plan A that we stick to than try to adapt to the specific game situation and try to get something out of the current game, thinking that if he's got it right it should eventually work out in the end...but with the margins so less even for chasing the title nowadays, a few slip ups are enough to miss out on the title.
I remember Xhakas last year playing at number 8; Getting forward, creating brilliant play with Odegaard, while fluid flowing football oozed out of the midfeild, we scored great goals that inspired the fans. This season we look over coached in a sense. I think being very successful at dead ball play is a hint at what underlying obstacles may lie ahead. WE LOVE YOU ARSENAL!
The positioning of our fullbacks who are asked to invert constantly is a massive issue imo. Look at Timber's positioning at 4:32... now imagine if he was asked to run down wing. Same problem on the left where it seems obvious that Martinelli is suffering from not having an overlapping LB. I genuinely miss good ol K Tierney
I sometimes wish Arteta would watch some of your content 😅. This is one of those videos! It's soo frustrating not knowing what he is really thinking about what is currently happening with the team. 😮💨
You've hit this on the head 100%. Couldn't disagree with one thing and have had exactly the same thoughts all season. It seems his team talks about energy and passion have taken a step back when that's what we need back. Runs off the ball and risk taking with our passes through the lines rather than this slow methodic possesion game. Far too mathematical and every other team has worked us out.
Alex, when is the next class? I need to attend the next training session. This is brilliant. This is unique. Thank God I found you. You have made my day, boy!. The boys are just Jonny walkers. So so , disappointing. Keep it coming, bro. Love the show always.
Totally agree, your channel become a more logical place to discuss then any channel in other social media. Its not simply about buying striker/forward, but in every match "we didn't perform" / lose/ do annoying draw, its the same attacking phase. Its not the same seasons ago. This season, they are all instructed to do so. I love what Arteta did for us, his big brain, ideal to make everything about everything, is one makes Arsenal Big again. But also its the same ideal/traits that makes him choose this kind of approach, more conservative approach on certain matches. I don't know, maybe simple because its expose the opponent weakeness (which the result obviously not showing), or just simply manage fitness because of the tight schedules or the depleted squad. Its too mathematical. Exactly the word that fit.
Couldn’t agree more! Every time I watch us play I can’t help but think our players are doing mental math in-front of goal to decide if the XG would be higher or lower if they take an extra touch or pass
Surely someone send this to Arteta. If only Arsenal could build up faster and have a sense of urgency as opposed to looking like we want to compose an attack we would be far...just run run run towards the net.
I think this actually stems from an adjustment we made early last season. Remember 22/23 where we came storming out the blocks at the beginning, we were epic in the transition phases with our improved press. scoring goals by the bucketload in the process... But we faded hard with injuries and fatigue in the latter few months of the season and i think Arteta realized that it wasn't sustainable. Last season we came out the blocks slow but also controlled and everyone was disappointed we weren't the free flowing team of the previous season. Control has always been high on Arteta's priorities. but became the focus, partly i believe because it conserves energy, reduces the number of sprints and high impact plays (in terms of impact on players bodies), and i include the "timewasting" as part of that too... i don't think that it's a surprise that we went on the end of season run as combined with the mental recharge in Dubai, we were still relatively fresh compared to some of the teams in the league who were playing at 100% every game... i think it also showed in our pretty decent injury record last season (although perhaps we were just storing them up for this season, what do i know) . You're right about Arteta being "statistically the best" and i think his frustrations this season have come from how much of this season has felt out of his control. As much as you're right about transition being the key to unlocking more attacking threat, i suspect because of all of the above thing i mentioned, Arteta will choose to move further into the slow and controlled instruction rather than fix this specific part of our game. It's a trade off he's made and i think he'll stick with it unfortunately.
You are absolutely correct. He also uses set pieces as a cheat code to score cheap goals when the team cannot score from open play and against tight low blocks. I mean it works, but when it doesnt, its very depressing.
i was looking for this comment cause Arteta is doing this for a reason he wants the team to save energy for the business end of the season he learnt this from pep slot will be shocked when Arteta finishes the race at the top leads Arsenal to their first league title in 21 years
I share the same sentiment. Statistically, Liverpool should fade off by the end of the season due to injuries and fatigue. One problem is that we are 9 points behind them due to bad luck. It’ll be difficult for us to turn this around. If we are champions or 1 or 2 points behind them this season I wouldn’t mind continuing the same philosophy. I foresee once we have a strong bench with all players have quality backups, next season or one after that we can get back to playing 22/23 style of play. As of now we are not capable of doing that.
True i think he is the sort of player we are missing aswell ever since we lost xhaka we never really replaced him cuz we lack that extra man that could make late runs in the box and someone who would actually take shots like xhaka did for us
thank you! It’s so frustrating when we have these really good high turnovers and then nothing happens - we pass the ball backwards and the build up starts again. The thing is, in the rare occasions where we actually use the turnovers for direct attacking plays we have really good chances (Martinelli chance vs Newcastle for example).
Respect the analysis as always and agree with what's letting our football down, but there's something about how this season has started and where we are now that makes me think Mikel is cautious of the teams current bad luck with injuries, refs etc. and in order to not collapse completely, he's tactically avoiding high intensity football that would be required to consistently make use of those transition moments. Don't forget Klop's high press ball initially caught up with them and the team was gutted for a whole season with injuries. It's a Marathon and it's unreasonable to expect a team to win every game dominantly in the hardest league in the world + UCL.
I realize that teams don't even scrumble to defend a high turnover against us. A few times that got to our half in the second half, we won the ball back and Newcastle didn't seem bothered at all because we were going to get back into our methodical and laborious routine. We are not scary at all on the turnovers. We don't create a sense of urgency for the opposition's defence with our high turnovers.
Very spot on, he's talked about "feeling" in the video, teams "feel" safe when we win the ball, knowing we'll play it safe (backwards) & they will have time to get back.
Alex, another proper analysis of the way we play. I saw it but couldn't articulate it. You are spot on. Let's hope Arteta acknowledges and responds accordingly. Great presentation as usual.
04:07 “often when we win the ball high, we slow it down”… There is a fantastic example in last year’s 2-2 at Chelsea, and I said it before: imagine the ball that led to the 1-touch Rice’s equaliser having gone to Ødegaard instead. He would have stopped it, touched it 10 times in 1 square foot and then passed it to Saka, game lost. There are other aspects I think we miss having a threatening figure. I.e I don’t remember having scored directly from a free kick since Xhaka… And I’m not sure we pose a threat from out of the box more than 10 times in a season. Or an attacker posing aerial threat (yet we keep resorting to crosses, but look at Havetz’s sitter v Newcastle). There is so little variety, that our opponents really only have to nail one defensive aspect right to easily F us. I think the last time I was surprised by how unexpectedly we scored was Nketiah’s third goal v Palace (and I didn’t even like Nketiah)
4:19-it kills me, too, mate. I am always shouting during matches when we win the ball, and all we need is one pass to our forwards, and we are on goal. Against Newcastle, we played that pass once, for real, once! The other times, it's recycling it to the fullbacks, the DM, the keeper and he stands with one foot on the ball for a whole 5 seconds. We could have broken the opponent damnit and scored a freaking goal.
Arteta has been saying he wants an attacking superstar. He wants to combine the maths with inevitable players he just hasn’t been backed for those players
I love this video, but don't think it's only on Mikel, We need leaders on the pitch who are going to take the game by the scruff of the neck and make something happen. As per the video examples we have too many players standing idle and not making things happen in attack. We need Jesus' chaos and dribbles from his first season, Martinelli to remember he's a Brazilian winger and not just a track athlete running in a straight line... we definitely need Odegaard back to his best leading by example and finally we need players to take shots. From outside or inside the box it doesn't matter, spills and tap ins are goals too. I think we looked better at attacking in our 3-3-1-3 formation having more bodies higher up the pitch.
So your analysis of Arteta is kind of reminding me of an issue that my baseball team had with their manager, Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For context, the Dodgers had have the best analytics department in all of baseball and were one of the first teams to really invest in it seriously. They basically used analytics to drive their player acquisitions and also how they approached each game. This would lead to great regular season records, BUT would sometimes be the downfall to the team in the playoffs. Dave was often too over reliant on the analytics and would pull a pitcher that looked like he was on fire for another pitcher simply because it had the more favorable statistical matchup even if that pitcher was not as talented and had been in a minor slump. Fans would claim he "over managed", but in reality the issue was that he relied too much on the data rather than managing based off of feel and intuition on how the current game was progressing and how certain players were playing. Even in a sport that's essentially turn based like baseball, you can't just go off of what the analytics says, you need to factor in things that aren't in the scouting report and sometimes you need to realize that a player is in the zone and you need to just let them cook even if it goes against what the data tells you to do. Now for the happy part, this last season the Dodgers won the world series and it was largely due to Dave just managing based off of his gut feeling and intuition. Obviously data was in play, but there were so many times where he just decided to keep a guy in when he would have taken them out previously or go with a starter instead of throwing a bullpen game. I think Arteta is going through a similar growing pain that Dave did as well. He needs to use his intuition more and adapt his tactics on what he's sensing instead of just going off the script written by the analytics department.
I think youre spot on but its clear to see why arteta is like this. 2 of his main influences coaching-wise (pep and moyes) are very disciplined and structured, offering little creative freedom to their players. This obviously creates exellent defensive and possesion situations which accounts for something like 99% of a match. Tge problem lies in the 1% of the time which relies on individual creativity to create a moment on uncertainty in the opposition team. Imo The wenger element (which can be seen in the way arteta asks his players to contribute in multiple phases and interchange) is yet to be introduced to its fullest and allow that extra bit of freedom to create and go against instructions at times to create unpredictable attacking scenarios. We try these intricate plays in the box that rarely come off because people are glued to their positions. Im hoping that arteta has spent the last few years creating this excellent foundation abd plans to sprinkle that little bit of creativity next to finalise it.
Back here after the united game & stuff u said happened again, how many times were our players static, especially to crosses into the box. Literally nobody attacking the crossed balls. How has the coaching staff not seen this?
It does certainly feel like the chaos or freedom of expression on the pitch has been trained out of some of our players to some extent. It's a difficult trade off, as you sacrifice defensive stability. It does feel like we're playing with the handbrake on this season - it maybe worth taking a leaf out of Wenger's book as well as Pep's.
Slot hasn't been a manager for just one year has he - he's been a manager for eight years with experience at four clubs. Arteta has been a manager for five years with (management) experience at just one club.
He pointed out the no running into the box and it being instructions but i can recall so many times in that area trossard was in ode getting the ball from us winning possession. around the box and saka makes that little run behind and ode flicking over so many times. We have it it’s not instructions but it really isnt offered anywhere else outside of those 2 and maybe jesus on a good day
I think one thing to consider is something that I remember Pep saying once: to get the team into the final third, that needs coaching, tactics, etc. But to put the ball in the back of the net needs talent. I am more than OK with Arteta's dominance and control-based football (it's better for Arsenal fans' blood pressure and it's overall more sustainable than Liverpool's basketball style, personally). We have the right profiles for it in defence and midfield, and I am very happy to never see any 4-1 thumpings at the Ethiad again. It can be entertaining, but only when we are scoring goals. If we score goals, it is seen as a dominant, stranglehold, thumping victory (think all those 5-0 and 6-0 away days; those were very fun), but when we're not scoring it's seen as dull and not creative enough. What I will say, is we need more talent in attack to consistently put the ball in the back of the net; more X-factor if I may. Out attack isn't terrible, just a very predictable and unsuited to the task. We can create plenty chances, just sometimes not too clear-cut ones because of our style and those chances not being on the transition, so to cater for it we will need to have attackers who are suited to that style. Strikers who are comfortable with mid/low blocks and scoring half-chances (not really Jesus), and wingers who are proper wide-men instead of inverted wingers like Martinelli and Trossard, so like Barcola, arguably Nico Williams, arguably Sesko, Isak, etc. Think about it this way: since Arteta changed his style from more vertical to more control-based (start of 2023-2024), we have signed 2 (TWO) attackers: Havertz and Sterling (please correct if wrong). Havertz is going to be that second striker type in the long term, so not even a proper forward in some sense (nominally playing in midfield but being the tip of the midfield diamond in possession), and Sterling was a last minute panic buy. Arteta has been screaming for more attackers, just none have come. Arteta cares too much; he wants to control every variable possible and leave next to nothing to chance. This mostly works, except the two things that Arteta cannot control are: he cannot control who Arsenal buy (he can't buy the players himself), and he cannot put the ball in the back of the net for his players. He has been screaming for attackers in press conferences and behind the scenes as well (at least that's what I like to think), so I'm not sure that these issues are entirely his fault (he definetely isn't perfect either, and he's made plenty of mistakes this season). People are quick to blame everything on the manager. I'm looking upwards at how slow the Arsenal board are, why the Merino and Calafiori deals took so long to complete (wasn't the Merino one supposed to be easy to do?) and the club's hesitance to spend big on a proper attacker. One thing is clear: if we don't spend on proper attackers in January or (at very, very least) the summer, we're going to have to ask serious questions of the board. Sorry for the rant. I felt like I needed to put my thoughts out there.
Good video. We are quite a hard watch at the moment and are often ineffective with the ball. Why? We pass too slowly allowing teams to reset, play sideways too often as we are static, and are risk adverse. Strangely we seem more comfortable taking risks with the ball in our own penalty area.
@JSA-Studios maybe but perhaps not from the beginning. What would you say is the difference between Pep and Arteta's style/tactics? Why is it not working for Arteta?
Interesting analysis of how Liverpool bomb on when they win the ball. Our boys leg it back to get goal side when we lose it or when there's danger of a counter. I'm not sure our players have the engines to do both.
Great video. You articulated what I’ve been wondering for a while: why does our frontline stand around so much in the final third? Why aren’t there runs towards goal? I’d also be curious about your thoughts on this inverted fullback tactic we’re still using. Fullbacks on the touchline can help the wingers play closer to goal. I don’t know the numbers but I imagine we’re near bottom of the league for crosses from fullbacks.
Actually I think we need to play full backs like Zinchenko at times We can’t keep playing defensive FB’s all the time and let them stay back in buildup I miss Ben white
spot on ! exactly what i have been thinking, I always feel going the money ball approach works very well to build a defense, but to build a good attack you need quite a bit of risk, unpredictability ,creativity and a certain level of freedom, all of which we are lacking in our attack at the moment.
i think the players are too "systematic", the same feelings in the winter period of 23/24 season or the forrest away 22/23. there were no intensity and urgancy to just take a shot or they just didnt know what to do next. it felt like they just did not want to lose but did not need to win at the same time. the balance between runners and ball-to-feet players are off is a good point with only nelli as the only runner but with defensive duties so basically no runners at all in some degree.
I've been saying for a while now that we need an 18 yard box coach, like we have Jover for set pieces. Arteta appears to be clueless when regarding a striker and the striking elements. He has failed to produce a CF along with ruining the ones he inherited. Laca left and banged the goals in. Auba went from 22, 10 and lastly 4. That was his goal return in Arteta 1st 3 seasons. Last season Auba scored 30 goals in 50 games. It is fine that Arteta can't do everything but he needs to be told that the striker and 18 yard box is the new coaches role, like Jover does set pieces.
I think the issue with transition that no one seems to be having regarding our team is, do we have a long range passer in the team that can always, with guarantee, find his man. Liverpool and city have it in Trent/KDB m, who is that player for us. Also, I do feel teams fear us just as much Liverpool, typically it’s why they rarely try and press us, because they’d have to give up spaces in behind for our attackers, our main issue now is our offense is low on confidence, and thus not as reliable with the final action, in addition we don’t have an out an out 10 and that is costing us big big time.
Teams fear Liverpool, Newcastle..sometimes even chelsea because they ATTACK. No team fears us anymore because they know we'll slow down and wait for an opportunity imo, he have one of the worst attacks in the whole league..statistically this is not true but when watching the game, our attack looks lackluster and hopeful for a mistake. Everyone is scared to take on a player (except timber), and this cannot be just the players faults..i think Arteta has discourage players from takeons without support because he is so hell bent on control Sad honestly, we need change ASAP
I hear you but on arteta's defense I think that's why he went for Havertz and Jesus. They are more of chaos-drawn players than ball to feet. It's sad how Jesus fell off with the injuries and we had to piegonhole Havertz
Idk where to start, but your really come with the right stuff at the right time to get oyr heads over our arsenal problems, this last game we lost in the cup vs newcastle, really mad eme think, where dis our creativity and coutage go, the only one in the team who was really unpredictable was the 17 yeara old , passing with courage past players elder tham him being around the the game for a while, we need a steixker thats for a FACT, which will at leastbput 25% of out chances in the back of the net, not to mention the wingers, we arw too predictable, long lost were the days when we had Sukur, Bergkam, Henry, Kanu Anelka in attack, Preise Wiltbord, overmars in attack , viera and gilberto marshing the midfield , We had evovled but we arw too pragmatic and predictable , we need ro fine tune of tactics and bring in quality players who will step roght into the 1st 11 and upgrade our team
The "pitch" would be the amount of times we've scored only 1 or no goals and compare that to our rivals such as Liverpool and City. It's grim reading. Believe we got blanked 5 times in the League last season and that more than anything cost us the title.
I’ve lost faith in Arteta tbh, wasn’t just the Newcastle result, don’t think he has the minerals to win a trophy but I’m happy to be proven wrong, think if he doesn’t bring in silverware this season he has to be replaced
how do you pitch that £100m player? you say: "this is the difference maker. the guy that will tilt the margins in our favor and rescue at least 6-9 points in the season. he's the guy that brings in the trophies."
He loves strikers who are versatile , kind of a centre forward type who can play different positions, and drop deep. These are important when injuries affect us. osihmen doesn't have that profile.
Some very good points made but People have short memories. Attacking wise We had what Liverpool dream of being under wenger. Arteta setting us up to win. Keep the faith.
The thing that bothers me is that the year we "bottled it" we were the transition team, the high position turnovers were transition goals and that's where Nelli was at his best. We've gotten worse and we need to be honest about it
Finally you have said what I have been saying since the begining of game 1 last season when this abomination of a style was implemented. This all on the managerand his over reaction to when Saliba went down and killed our title run.
the manager needs to make more of his players than focusing on a system. play martinelli high let him make runs in behind and take hes man on. play rice in dm where he can be a sweeper and lay the ball off. and if we're playing trossard, dont play him as a touchline winger. we need him next to the box where he was great last year. shouldnt have sold esr we have no ball carriers ( apart from ethan 'kinda') and we probably need a number 10 like wirtz or musiala
That right there is the exact reason why klopp wanted martinelli was because he can become a great inside forward, look at the game against palace last year or the city game at home last year he was brilliant as an inside forward. But forcing him to play as a touchline winger is just killing his growth
The whole obsessed with stats it’s very American and Arteta has talked about working with the coaches from Kroenke’s basketball and NFL teams, so that must be where he gets it from and both of those teams have won championships so can’t be that bad of a method 😂
I think people are quick to quote "700m spent 0 won" and I get it, its frustrating to be so good and so close to achieving things. people are quick to forget what a state we were in before Arteta took over, we were on our way to being in a situation that man u are in now! now we are competing and one of the best teams in the world. Arteta is not perfect, far from it! but he gets the blame for a lot of things that arnt in his control. He can want to spend x amount on a player, he does not have the power to action it, he can create a system that gets us to create 6 big chances vs newcastle, he cant control havartz and timber missing open headers. yes you can claim "well he brought them" as if thats even a reasonable response. people need to calm down and trust we are on the right path
Last summer mikel sanctioned deals on calafiori and merino without prioritizing a forward. And this was after selling ESR, nketiah and loaning out nelson plus Vieira. Then brought in sterling. None of these would have been approved without his go-ahead. Apart from trossard and jesus which attacker has arteta bought on his own in the past 3 years. When did auba and lacazette leave? Why wait till saka is injured to realize we lack reinforcements? If the fans can see all these issues, u are telling arteta doesn't? Ofcourse he does but choose to ignore. Arteta's issue is sucking up to ownership while telling the fans other things and being stubborn
@@arnoldkwenda4678 you dont think he is well aware of what we need? considering we tried to sign Sesko at the beginning of last summer. I truly believe we did not have the funds available to do a 100m+ signing the summer after spending that on rice, so who should we have gotten? Niko Williams resigned a new deal and dident move, who was the main other option people were screaming about. clearly there is something the club or Arteta doesn't like about Osimhen as towards the end of the window he seemed gettable to me but we dident do it. We will never have all the answers, but if you think you know better then a professional football manager at the highest level and people who run a football club then you are deluded.
Yeah but it can't be denied that our forward is not good enough and we need to reinforce in midfield in the summer also which shows that some of money spent was wasted
Thats why I love managers like Ancelottie look at the freedom mabey it’s time to let go of Arteta and bring in someone who will bring us this kind of feeling that we haven’t had in a while criticising is okay and your supposed to it when you or someone dosent do it right. For me I think it’s time.
Its simple Arteta disallowed high tempo on the ball. He wants his players always to be aware of everything and obviously that perception slows us down a lot. We have such a strong backline they would be perfect for fighting with teams more openly. Saliba, Gabriel and Timber are quick they can cover a lot of space. We have not trained quick transitions in a long time it seems. Its always about gaining possession and never losing it. Its tiring to watch.
We play it too safe 9/10 times. For Example Look at the ball Trossard played to Martinelli before he hit the post, how many times does arsenal play such balls? in the Wenger days that sort of quick & inciscive pass used to be often, but now its so rare to see, right now we try to walk the ball in except unlike wenger 1. We r very slow in doing it 2. We are not clinical enough with fine quick touch passes in the final third (where space & time is limited)
Is it coaching, players not trusting each other, or both? It's true, though, we're too slow in transition. I think we do need a striker, but I think we need a CAM more.
You know how Arteta always talks about the players on the same position raising the level pushing each other to become better? I need to see from Arteta that he himself can learn and raise the tactical level from Liverpool and other big clubs who are capable of forcing a goal by tempo and overload from open play.
I never know how to fully articulate my thoughts about watching Arsenal play these days but you've summed it up perfectly, it's far too controlled for the most part and seems to lack any risk and heart. I want to us to win of course, who doesn't? But sometimes the manner of a win is what makes you remember why you support your team.
You're not wrong at all i noticed this myself we use to wipe teams out bow control is obsessed with which has killed our team
@cianomugzy975 or Havertz tbf. He wants duels because in that game Haaland beat us to every ball.
Too depressed to even do the "bro fell off" joke
nothing another left back wont fix
Would take a Davies tbf, Bale pipeline.
@@DuckSmokezQuack🤣🤣
I will love mikel watch this, he sacrified many of our speed plays in 2022/23 for control as he thought them unsustainable and saw them lead to burnout. But we are overly slow and wait for opponents to get into shape and number 8/9 in their box
Damn right 😢
When I compare this team to the Wenger title winning teams, and even the teams that 'nearly' achieved, it's clear to me that we lack in that 'chaos factor' that allowed Wengers teams to be so threatening going forward.
@@cameronuy9552 Funny thing is, Martenilli would be showing his true strength if we allow for chaos
its working we are second and on a semi final
“When is this gonna end, Robbie” killed me 😭😭😭😭

Why would you do this to yourself?
I've been a fan since August 1999 & I've seen our glory days.
Tbh, just look for another team.
Imagine if we got Kvaratskhelia and Osimhen this window. That crazy old Napoli duo alongside Saka would be so good
Kvara seems to be on his way to PSG, we should just pay £50m for Nico Williams and maybe summer we go for Gyokeres instead of Isak cause Newcastle are never selling him to us and if they do that’s £150m while you can get 2 good players for the same amount
Alas, we can only dream as such a scenario will never become reality.
Even if that happens... We wouldn't take advantage of it with our slow build up
@@mengienghinamwaami4894No way would I want us to pay for Nico Williams, Martinelli is better than that guy, because he had a decent 2024 Euros campaign, doesn't mean he's him
Let's keep imagining while serious clubs make moves and sign the players they need
I think this allllll the time lol
Goodness mate, even on the most depressing of topics it’s still such great content. One of the best in AFC fandom and in general footy fan content.
Arteta loves strikers that don't score
Arteta is average
i was looking for this comment cause Arteta is doing this for a reason he wants the team to save energy for the business end of the season he learnt this from pep slot will be shocked when Arteta finishes the race at the top leads Arsenal to their first league title in 21 years
I share the same sentiment.
@@sagaruv i swear we are 6 points behind them
Imagine a profile of Morgan Rogers in this team ,, I runner in behind and he is a great ball carrier , which we do not have
True i think he is the sort of player we are missing aswell ever since we lost xhaka we never really replaced him cuz we lack that extra man that could make late runs in the box and someone who would actually take shots like xhaka did for us
thank you! It’s so frustrating when we have these really good high turnovers and then nothing happens - we pass the ball backwards and the build up starts again. The thing is, in the rare occasions where we actually use the turnovers for direct attacking plays we have really good chances (Martinelli chance vs Newcastle for example).
Agreed! We lack spontaneity focusing too much on control (and statistics)
4:34 If Rice made that inside run instead of calls for the ball to his feet, we have a big chance in the box there
Splendid analysisis of Mike Arteta
Watch how fast Liverpool move the ball around on the build up. It's 1 touch and pass. We don't do that anymore.
The rhetorical questioning of self and then answering it 2/3 of the way into every video does my head in. Apart from that great as always 🎉🎉🎉
So the issue here is lack of balance, i.e. ball to feet vs runners. Got it. Thank you for the insightful video. Keep it up.
Arne slot 1 year as manger > Arteta 5 years as manager
Slot hasn't been a manager for just one year has he - he's been a manager for eight years with experience at four clubs. Arteta has been a manager for five years with (management) experience at just one club.
And he inherited a finished squad and club. He hasn’t had to rebuild root and branch like Arteta.
This is probably the most idiotic comment I've ever seen
The system Mikel applies some times just kills it. We were 2 nell down on new castle but guys couldnt even run to the opposite box to score
Good video. We are quite a hard watch at the moment and are often ineffective with the ball. Why? We pass too slowly allowing teams to reset, play sideways too often as we are static, and are risk adverse. Strangely we seem more comfortable taking risks with the ball in our own penalty area.
i wanna see martinelli play as a 9 breaking in behind like that run vs chelsea when kante slipped years ago
'Is Mikel too mathematical?' (10:00) Very shrewd and worrying observation. I don't think any PL winning/ great managers can be accused of that.
he plays the odds man. That aint gonna work all the time
Guardiola can definitely be accused of that
@JSA-Studios maybe but perhaps not from the beginning.
We were 2-0 down to Newcastle and subbed on Zinchenko. End me please
Actually I think we need to play full backs like Zinchenko at times
We can’t keep playing defensive FB’s all the time and let them stay back in buildup

@@kunimitsune177 who are you to tell people what to do?
spot on ! exactly what i have been thinking, I always feel going the money ball approach works very well to build a defense, but to build a good attack you need quite a bit of risk, unpredictability ,creativity and a certain level of freedom, all of which we are lacking in our attack at the moment.
We are way too predictable
i think the players are too "systematic", the same feelings in the winter period of 23/24 season or the forrest away 22/23. there were no intensity and urgancy to just take a shot or they just didnt know what to do next. it felt like they just did not want to lose but did not need to win at the same time.
the balance between runners and ball-to-feet players are off is a good point with only nelli as the only runner but with defensive duties so basically no runners at all in some degree.
Great video btw 🙏🏾
Teams fear Liverpool, Newcastle..sometimes even chelsea because they ATTACK.
No team fears us anymore because they know we'll slow down and wait for an opportunity
imo, he have one of the worst attacks in the whole league..statistically this is not true but when watching the game, our attack looks lackluster and hopeful for a mistake. Everyone is scared to take on a player (except timber), and this cannot be just the players faults..i think Arteta has discourage players from takeons without support because he is so hell bent on control
Sad honestly, we need change ASAP
I think in the long run the stats will determine results than these one off non-stat based processes. Hopefully the fans believe it and give him time.
I hear you but on arteta's defense I think that's why he went for Havertz and Jesus. They are more of chaos-drawn players than ball to feet. It's sad how Jesus fell off with the injuries and we had to piegonhole Havertz
Idk where to start, but your really come with the right stuff at the right time to get oyr heads over our arsenal problems, this last game we lost in the cup vs newcastle, really mad eme think, where dis our creativity and coutage go, the only one in the team who was really unpredictable was the 17 yeara old , passing with courage past players elder tham him being around the the game for a while, we need a steixker thats for a FACT, which will at leastbput 25% of out chances in the back of the net, not to mention the wingers, we arw too predictable, long lost were the days when we had Sukur, Bergkam, Henry, Kanu Anelka in attack, Preise Wiltbord, overmars in attack , viera and gilberto marshing the midfield ,
We had evovled but we arw too pragmatic and predictable , we need ro fine tune of tactics and bring in quality players who will step roght into the 1st 11 and upgrade our team
When you mentioned the runners in behind, I feel like Havertz made some of those runs last season, so is it instructions or what
With this take on Arteta’s thinking, I just want to see his stocks account. Could be top!
For me it’s the tempo we slow the play way down and that was evident the other day with odegard he spins like twice and the moment is gone
he looks behind all the time for safety
I'm going personally mail the book "What do you here, won't get you there" personally to Mikel's door.
You lot need to stop making excuses for Arteta, he’s a shit manager! He’s not an offensive manager
4:52 Watching at 1.5x and that was so sneaky on point.
There.

By removing set pieces from the equation; by being aware that set piece success is not indicative of open play ability.
Just watching villa v wham after watching this video thinking "Potter has them reacting better on turn over better than us already "
You hit the nail on the head. It’s a lack of movement upfront. When Zinchenko came on and made the run, the pass didn’t come.
how do you pitch that £100m player? you say: "this is the difference maker. the guy that will tilt the margins in our favor and rescue at least 6-9 points in the season. he's the guy that brings in the trophies."
Sell Havertz, that's how
so whats the other side of arteta's structural mathematical approach? giving the players absolute freedom like wenger did in the final third?
Brilliant analysis
That would be a reasonable response when it comes to Havertz given what state he was in at Chelsea
@@VelicoFides He also was arguably our best player 2nd half of last season and is our current top scorer in all comps.
Problem with Arteta is that his one dimension. Once the opposition understands his gameplay its over for him
Why can't the club buy a striker like Gyokerez 😡😡😡Who is letting the fans down🤦🏾♂️
Fell asleep listening...
wake up foo
Nothing will be fixed till the summer but even when arteta has changed the tactics we need to go back to champagne football
Similarly on the example you showed. a third man pass was the right one, leaving martinelli a shot from the edge of the box. 5 mins in your video.
Never trust Arteta before, and not gonna start now. He is the definition of "bottle job".
good on you , dont let the bullshit PR fool ya
I love your analysis will slow down play in terms of Open play and transactions even when he comes to throwing we let our opponents settle B4 we throw
Sterling is willing to run in behind but the manager refuses to play him
Is it coaching, players not trusting each other, or both? It's true, though, we're too slow in transition. I think we do need a striker, but I think we need a CAM more.
You know how Arteta always talks about the players on the same position raising the level pushing each other to become better? I need to see from Arteta that he himself can learn and raise the tactical level from Liverpool and other big clubs who are capable of forcing a goal by tempo and overload from open play.
We do need more runners, like Jackson for ex. Sterling is that player but he doesnt play
The equation does not work if the main variable is missing.
The games that we don't win, we win with an Isak.
If Arteta doesn’t t take the brakes off then it won’t matter who we win
I never know how to fully articulate my thoughts about watching Arsenal play these days but you've summed it up perfectly, it's far too controlled for the most part and seems to lack any risk and heart. I want to us to win of course, who doesn't? But sometimes the manner of a win is what makes you remember why you support your team.
arsenal players rarely show heart
lawn fertilizer quote >>>
Noticing the black eye, starting to think this team is actually destroying you now 😂 (seriously though hope your alright lad, class content as always)
I will tell you the Arteta guy is a genius, the way he has got y’all believing in him without winning shit is just pure abrakadabra
its the clubs PR, theyll believe anything even if the truth is sitting right in front of him.
JJUUSSTT PPLLAAYY NWANERIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!
