One thing we should add, is that one should never, ever, ever be hated. One can be feared, but that fear must breed respect begrudging or not. Fear prevents actions against you. However, hatred and fear breeds rebellion as the penalty for resisting you is seen as preferable to life under you. Ensure that whatever action you take, you never breed hatred. Never be arbitrary, never act overtly unjust, never take any action which can result in you being hated, and if you have to, always ensure that someone else takes the fall for it. Though act cautiously, as if anyone figures out, those who work under you, may also turn to hate you. Basically, don't act dirty just for the sake of acting dirty.
If some hates you that means you've already defeated him or her. This is written in the Japanese proverbs of ancient wisdom. But that's for you to decide. Me I could give a poop of who hates me, cause it's better that I'm the one hated rather than me hating them or whoever. In turn, I think more than feared, you must yearn to be respected. Love is something for selected ones, fear is a tool to avoid being attacked, hate however is only for the ocasional 1 or 2 people who are too isolated to harm you. Respect however is something you must get as much as you can. If you stand your ground and balance compassion and ruthlessness correctly then even people who might not like you will not try to harm you either, or at least would think twice to do that.

Yes, Machiavelli advised that upon conquering a principality, the victorious prince should: 1) ensure that the family of the principality's former rulers are entirely "extinct", 2) avoid changes to their traditions, customs and laws and 3) don't mess with their taxes!!!
“To be GOVERNED is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so. To be GOVERNED is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be place under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonored. If only Italians of the age would have listen and apply Macchiavelli's ideas, we could have been a decent nation now. a better one, and much more respected.
"The Prince was an advice guide for politicians." This is a mistaken concept that has gone mainstream. The Prince was a discourse on human nature which Machiavelli understood better than anyone even modern members of the "therapeutic community."
Number 1 was never said by Machiavelli, but is a popular interpretation of his advice. It would be useful to read The Prince, but better to read his book about Livy to put his advice into context and understand the extent of his realism.
I think the quote itself can have a much more positive interpretation. "If you want things to be good, you need to prepare yourself to do what must be done." Never execute innocents nor try to make an evil utopia alright, but something as simple as self-defense from a dangerous criminal might ocasionally result in taking a life. You don't advocate for vice nor go in your way to ruin lives, but you must not be soft against people who want to destroy you one way or another. Or as an old saying from someone I don't remember, well, can't remember the exact words but it goes like this: "Always talk about diplomacy while carrying a big stick."
It depends very much on what your goals are. If your goals are centered on success in the world the Machiavelli has useful advise. However, you value your soul and your eternal destiny, then much of what Machiavelli advises is unwise for "what does it profit a man if he should gain the whole world but lose his immortal soul".
It is better to be feared than to be loved . I believe in this bcz the person who loves you can say anything and di anything that can maybe hury u but the person who feared you always think 100 times before say you something
Yep Machiavelli was correct “the ends always justify the means📚” it doesn’t matter how you need to get things done more time we just do what ever is effective, energy cost effective & recourse cost effective to achieve our f*cking goals. The real world isn’t Disney land you gotta be brutal when needed to make a statement, there’s a time & a place for Solomon’s philosophy on dealing with the events in the world when you come across them but more time now it calls for you to boss up completely ✅. Good breakdown on this video .
Exactly, just like how my city had a homeless problem,so we rounded all the homeless people up taught to them how to stop breathing, and stuffed the bodies in storage units. The ends always justify the means. We have fewer homeless now 😀
he also made a point about how it's easier to conquer a state with an entrenched noble class, as you can sway the nobles to your side, but harder to hold onto this state, as these same nobles may turn against you. On the flip side, it's harder to conquer a state with appointed bureaucrats and regional governors, as these bureaucrats are loyal to the incumbent regime, but once you've prevailed, and appointed your own bureaucrats, it's easier to hold onto.
“The ends justify the means.” Has been the rationale behind just about every atrocity committed throughout history. It’s smart to keep your cards close to your chest but being overly Machiavellian will almost always bite you in the ass.
Machiavelli was a genius authoritarian, but only a genius in that way. He wrote his book and targeted his philosophy at kings and leaders as a way to encourage them to have greater authority, more control, and more power. This era was an era of war and colonialism and the world was governed by corruption and fear was a speciality of the bureaucracy while the masses were uneducated and uninformed. His ideas may work in war, but in everyday life or leadership or business, we should not desire to do harm and act in a manner applicable to war.
I rather live by Jesus's teachings. Don't fear man who can just kill the body but fear God who can kill not only the body but can send the soul to hell.
Joe The Barean if a government decides that you were dangerous and decided to torture and kill you, you think God is scarier? Imagine being humiliated, raped, beaten, dominated, tortured, and maimed while under the power of evil people on earth. How is God scarier than that?
You’re not seeing the bigger picture. It’s the afterlife that counts the most. You can be humiliated tortured whatever but that’s just in this life , where pain only lasts to a certain degree, the one that is only for a while and not for eternity like the afterlife. That is why you give your faith to God so that you can be free for storming. @Hershey Cookie
I like Machiavelli's words, but my brother brought up a good point. "Why should we care about Machiavelli?" I responded by saying "couldn't you say the same about any intellectual or philosopher?" but certainly there must be a better answer out there.
Judge the message not the messenger. What machiavelli said is rationally sound no matter who said it. It's about game theory and maximizing your chances as a ruler. "2+2=4" doesn't suddenly become incorrect just because hitler says it.
i think being loved is better then being feared not all should love you but the most because if they love you they well sacrifice for you and trust you in every step
This Guy is For Those Who Are Real And are not afraid of telling people that they wanna rule the fkin World one day . I read his book (The Prince) as a 7-8 Yo n it's my dad who made me read it . This is real thing , this is reality n Matthew McConaughey said it right "The World Was never fair , it's not now and it'll never be" . After reading the book , I can't say I'm changed but coz if a book Can change you ? I don't think u've a stable personality but I changed my perspective abt certain things . Niccolò Machiavelli was too real to be in the world of hypocrites . Not to mention he was born in the era of that Italy which used to see wars all day n night. 🍺🍺
Machiavelli was wise, indeed. However, the ends never justify the means. This was, in my humble opinion, the greatest flaw in, "The Prince." Much of his other recommendations were sound, if a bit nasty. Reality is a nasty business, and power is something everyone wants, but is ill prepared to handle.
@@zinzorius313 Because that's what someone like Hitler would think. So you want to win the lottery, so you cheat. You want to be alone, so you kill everyone nearby. In both easy examples, the good end were achieved by terrible means. Now that's why the ends do not justify the means.
Hate when people say "It is better to be feared than loved" presuming the caveat is "both are desirable".. it's literally the last part of the sentence which is "but NEVER HATED".
My first try with the Prince I was 10 (late 60s). I have since read it in sections and in total at least a dozen times. Currently I am rereading sections of Machiavelli’s The Prince and Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations. Certain Knowledge, Understanding and Philosophies never go “Out of Date”.
Most comments here seem to praise Machiavelli. You need to balance that with the consideration that he was a man of his times. Power games in those days carried a lot more severe consequences if your power was undermined or taken away. You could be put to death for aligning yourself with the wrong people or belief. Machiavelli wrote his book as a kind of guide to those close to power looking to advance themselves. Nowadays there are people living towards a Machiavellian persuasion who don't even know who Machiavelli was - politicians, bankers, lawyers. These institutions are by their very nature inclusive and extremely protective of their financial activities across the globe. Todays Machiavellians are the elitists, subtly manipulating regulations to better suit themselves. As far as us ordinary folk are concerned, Machaiavellian teaching is mostly immaterial. Unless you happen to be extremely ambitious and looking to change the world.
Its not talking about fear necessarily ...ffear breeds rebellion and mistrust...it talls about respect. If you cant choose between live and respect, choose respect becauae its better.
This advice is pure dark psychology coated with unoffensive words. Strange, these things are clear and I can easily see through ones bullshit now that I heard it all. It would be easy to not be disrupted with a bossy person from hereon out.
Abdeladim Jay Jawad Jawad That will only bring you pain. Treat others how they deserve to be treated, ( just respect ) because your own desires, values, and morals more than likely won't match with others. I learned this the very hard way. I grew up hearing that line and tried to live by it, I want to a champion street soldier dealer fighter artist that would be there to lend a hand to everybody; in work, in battle, in celebration, in finance, ... that stupid saying contradicts life in general and I wish I never learned of it. For instance, treat others how you want to be treated. I want good health, money, stability in life, family and friends I can count on when I'm down or up. you can't treat everybody to that. That will only lead to you to be taken advantage of. Trust is earned and not given. The saying could be further from the truth, Confuscious now sounds like a bastard communist. Treat all others with extreme caution, for they can take all that you have. I want to be able to get a cash loan when I need one, should I just go give out loans to others? I want to be a man of my word, should I be believing everybody's else's word. 38 years on this earth, only to realize so much of it consist of compost !
Il Principe is a good read, but he let's go off all pretence in Discorso. He was a general bad guy to be fair and the Prussian King Frederich II (a few centuries later) wrote his anti-Machiavell because of it.⬅again a good read.
That's why he said if possible both because he knows in some cases love can be used as a tool. But in most cases fear gets the job done. Most people go to work out of the "fear" of losing something
A good straight-to-the-point video. But I also felt like I was watching a video made by a student for a project at school, lol you discussed it with not much enthusiasm which is actually quite oddly refreshing for me? I dunno maybe because I've seen to many videos like this with the same formula for narrating. But otherwise, very direct and easy to understand.
Tbe prince was the first ever full philosophical thesis I've ever read. Before that it was utube videos, wikipedia and some news and articles. 2 years later I'm still a firm follower of machiavellian theory
Machiavelli doesn't think that the ends justifies the means. He doesn't justify wrong doings at all. He just simply sees it as more efficient to only concern yourself with the results and outcome rather than how you go about achieving that outcome.
"It is better to be feared than to be loved, but both are desirable" Yeah, as a teacher can confirm. With most of my classes, I've made them love and fear me. The other few, I've had to go with the complete fear route lol.

Integrate, don't try to force change. 6.) pretty straight forward and applicable, no matter the times 5.) be pragmatic, not idealistic. what works, works. what doesn't work, doesn't. work with what you are given. not what you want 4.) try to align yourself with as much people as possible, but if you need to choose, ally with the most powerful (in his case, it's the common people) 3.) Do what you must, as effectively as you can, but keep the unsavory deeds secret. 2.) again also applicable no matter the time. 1.) only the goal truly matters.

@Brik Malek Berlusconi only done laws to avoid himself justice trials and also other things but his govern was bad
BigHenFor You are right. 👏. He never said it.
The end justifies the means was Karl Marx from an extrapolation from another quote from Machiavelli
I think the quote itself can have a much more positive interpretation.
"If you want things to be good, you need to prepare yourself to do what must be done."
Never execute innocents nor try to make an evil utopia alright, but something as simple as self-defense from a dangerous criminal might ocasionally result in taking a life. You don't advocate for vice nor go in your way to ruin lives, but you must not be soft against people who want to destroy you one way or another.
Or as an old saying from someone I don't remember, well, can't remember the exact words but it goes like this: "Always talk about diplomacy while carrying a big stick."
Stalin definitely studied well. He was a master of all those tactics
Stalin is my god
It depends very much on what your goals are. If your goals are centered on success in the world the Machiavelli has useful advise. However, you value your soul and your eternal destiny, then much of what Machiavelli advises is unwise for "what does it profit a man if he should gain the whole world but lose his immortal soul".
Exactly. If you want friends and love, Its not efficient. :)
This applies so nicely in being a drug dealer

Machiavelli is my superhero pick
We hurt the people we love all the time, but we are careful not to hurt those we truly fear.
Machiavelli helped me comprehend corporate and government organization structure and internal tendencies.
2:33 opportunity misspelled.
It is better to be feared than to be loved . I believe in this bcz the person who loves you can say anything and di anything that can maybe hury u but the person who feared you always think 100 times before say you something
I’ve been called Machiavellian so many times. No, I could never compare to this genius.
TLDR
Always emphasise that you couldn’t eat another bite _before_ stealing the last slice of pizza
We have fewer homeless now 😀
He also said that it is better to be feared than lived but don't be hated.
* loved
Jah Reigns *better to be feared then loved,if not both*
@@Milesco thanks man i couldn't make out what he said
4 weeks ago i finished the book of prince
Great book👍
Good short & to the point .
he also made a point about how it's easier to conquer a state with an entrenched noble class, as you can sway the nobles to your side, but harder to hold onto this state, as these same nobles may turn against you.
It was written in sarcasm. What not to do.
I rather live by Jesus's teachings. Don't fear man who can just kill the body but fear God who can kill not only the body but can send the soul to hell.
@Necro Fell Jesus changed the calender of the world if that's not proof than what is?

True. Question everything.
Reminds me of little finger from Game of Thrones, lil sneaky shit.
i think being loved is better then being feared not all should love you but the most because if they love you they well
sacrifice for you and trust you in every step
if u consciously searched a video like this just to one day give u the upper hand against people then we’re alike
Why don't you think that the ends justify the means?
@@zinzorius313 Because that's what someone like Hitler would think.
So you want to win the lottery, so you cheat.
You want to be alone, so you kill everyone nearby.
In both easy examples, the good end were achieved by terrible means.
Now that's why the ends do not justify the means.
@@macvena That's not how it works, the ends have to be better than the means, such as killing 10 people to save a 100 people.
Hate when people say "It is better to be feared than loved" presuming the caveat is "both are desirable".. it's literally the last part of the sentence which is "but NEVER HATED".
Being feared in a good way is best. I compare it to my dad I feared him and I didn’t fear him that’s how it should be
My first try with the Prince I was 10 (late 60s).

So much for sarcastic lists to still be reviewed. Same ruts !
Tupac brings me here
I AM ALIVE
Why?
Tpac talks about machuvalli?
The main theme of Machiavelli's The Prince: self-interest. It's not a perfect world, with people being cruel, selfish, disloyal and fickle.
Not so sure. He seemed to want unity among people it's just that he didn't seem to mind 'breaking eggs' to reach that goal.
This man was a political genius
Number two is my favorite because I tell people all the time that I would rather be feared then to be loved
Eric Farrar saying it is different than living it
Its not talking about fear necessarily ...ffear breeds rebellion and mistrust...it talls about respect.
If you cant choose between live and respect, choose respect becauae its better.
I say, iam the adult.
"It's better to be feared than to be loved" Life taught me this the hard way. 😭 Makaveli was right.
This advice is pure dark psychology coated with unoffensive words. Strange, these things are clear and I can easily see through ones bullshit now that I heard it all. It would be easy to not be disrupted with a bossy person from hereon out.

I'm a nobody, and my advice to the world is to treat others like how you want to be treated. Be fair, and don't be evil.

Makavelli was very smart man, a head of his time.
Who else knows he was a great Italian philosophy, actor and a writer?

The end justify the means, opposed to the religious belief that the end does not justify the means.
Just curious, have you heard this theory that he wrote "The Prince" as a joke?
I loved reading this book in my poli sci courses
A good straight-to-the-point video. But I also felt like I was watching a video made by a student for a project at school, lol you discussed it with not much enthusiasm which is actually quite oddly refreshing for me? I dunno maybe because I've seen to many videos like this with the same formula for narrating. But otherwise, very direct and easy to understand.

Machiavelli doesn't think that the ends justifies the means.
He doesn't justify wrong doings at all. He just simply sees it as more efficient to only concern yourself with the results and outcome rather than how you go about achieving that outcome.

10.) Don't rely solely on those who have no personal attachment to you
9.) Imitate the greats and those who were successful
8.) Do not help those who might intend to do you harm later
7.) Integrate, don't try to force change.
6.) pretty straight forward and applicable, no matter the times
5.) be pragmatic, not idealistic. what works, works. what doesn't work, doesn't. work with what you are given. not what you want
4.) try to align yourself with as much people as possible, but if you need to choose, ally with the most powerful (in his case, it's the common people)
3.) Do what you must, as effectively as you can, but keep the unsavory deeds secret.
2.) again also applicable no matter the time.
1.) only the goal truly matters.
