Ben, you'll be happy to know I actually like those suckers now. Through sheer determination, you have made me like them. Also, thanks for having me. Love you
I don't think people are mad at James Brand for being expensive. I think people are mad that James Brand doesn't deliver $400 worth of knife in a knife they price at $400. They don't have pricing that reflects their product's quality.
While I would definitely agree with early James Brand, they've clearly listened and have since released many newer knives that are more appropriately priced. They're still on the upper end of what I'd say is reasonable for what they are, but if they're this far in and still doing it, it's clearly working. If that's the case, is it the wrong price?
If i get a chance to name a knife line they'd be a set of synonyms... The Harlot, The Trollop, The Wench, The Hussy, The Vixen, The Concubine, The Minx...

I really enjoyed this interview. Would love to see one with Metal Complex. I to like shiny things and have a few . But I do also have a budget to stay in .. So to get the shiny stuff I have to save . I have QSP penguin and three civivi knives for beating on . But also have kunwu and WE for my nice knives . And here is the kicker , The Kunwu orian is easily my most carried knife . Good note about knife names needing to tell a story. Honestly, it's the stories of knives that get me to buy them these days. Maybe also why TwoSuns feel so forgettable even though they have some cool designs in compelling materials. And oh golly, am I familiar with those plums. My cheeks instantly swelled with extra mouth juice to compensate. Dried lemon peels are really nice too, nice for congestion/throat-y days.
Really great to see you two guys together in action. I like Taylor’s knife, reminds me a bit of TB’s Lanny’s Clip, but good that is more accessible for the people.
budget can definitely be a limiting factor theres some brands i'll never buy from because i dont see the value for materials but learning the diminishing returns curves and plateaus is good for everyone. there really is worth in getting into that $50-150 range for a lot of these items. ive beat the finish off my $50 flashlight, literally found it on my porch once overnight under snow and it was fine, and dropped it dozens of times and all of that would break a $1-$20 flashlight from almost everywhere. my most used pocketknife was like $60 when i bought it and ive only properly sharpened it a few times even with moderate use because the steel really was better.
I love waking up on a Saturday (here in Australia) and watching the Knafs show. The topics and conversations are always great and now I’m waiting for my first Lander knife to arrive.
Knife banter with Ben and Austin was what got me into knives and when they weren’t pushing boker kalashnikovs their insight to knife design and utility was the best part of the show. I think a lot of what they said on that show changed the folding knife world. Literally everything has a deep carry clip now because of Ben. This is a good series and definitely think that you need to figure out a way to reunite with Nick Shabazz if possible.
Thanks for another good show, and special thanks to Mr. Plant. Shoutout to Jenn and Vella from Knafs support! They've been very kind to me over the last however many days
Nooooooo, the stash is missing?!?!?! I totally disagree with the negative Nelly commenter, Taylor is a regular watch for me for all things EDC. Yes, some of the gear he shows is pricey but good quality gear that will work for a long time is not cheap. Plus, as he said, much of it is art hand made by artists who should be well compensated for their creations. Taylor does add in lower cost options from time to time, and then shows comparisons which I appreciate. Haters gonna hate, send them funeral potatoes.
Hey Ben and Taylor, just to clear up, there are no native buffalo in North America. They are all bison. Buffalo are native to Africa and Asia. The terms are not interchangeable as many people believe. Keep up the great work tho guys, loving these Knafs conversations.
Yo Taylor! What is up!! While that may be true, those water buffalo are not native, much like the lions and tigers at my local zoo are not. I just wanted to clear up the common misconception of the American Buffalo, it simply doesn’t exist. We have the American Bison, and it’s much cooler and tastier. 🇺🇸
Well hell I didn’t know Taylor designed a knife. Man I definitely dig the Knaf x Carry commission lander 2. Man Taylor has his own tastes. It’s America, people are allowed to do that. It’s crazy how when someone doesn’t agree with someone else’s tastes, the guy that they don’t agree with is considered wrong or the bad guy. 🤷🏻♂️ at least Taylor actually knows how to use his lock picks.
Top 3 words/phrases from Ben Peterson ✌🏼 1. I love it.. I love it 2. Cool.. cool 3. Amazing, that’s amazing Additional 4. Interesting, that’s interesting
I think the overpriced thing is better addressed by a discussion about diminishing returns on an item, functionality. The problem is that people fixate on this stuff vs the other... it's also about value and what you want... such as to hit the quality of an item you can get from china for less than you can get similar items from the US. I think one channel had discussed this at one point, but the weeds in this discussion is incredible.
People like that guy on Reddit are the ones who are “ruining” the community because they think their negative comments and what they call opinions are helping when in fact it’s the opposite. Stop caring about what others are spending their money on. I can’t afford a lot of the stuff that is out there, but I don’t hate those that buy it or sell it or make it! It’s all personal and what you like.
For me, the problem with expensive shiny pocket jewelry is that it pulls the EDC community in a materialistic, overconsumption-oriented direction, where people are just looking for something to spend money on, and the fact that something is very expensive becomes a value in itself. The idea of “EDC” as a philosophy or phenomenon is about capability, isn’t it? The difference between someone with empty pockets and someone with a well-thought-out EDC is that the person with a well-thought-out EDC is more capable in various situations. With that understanding, expensive shiny pocket jewelry is just noise in the community, as it’s consumption for the sake of consumption without any real purpose. Things can certainly be expensive, but for them to make sense, the item should make you more capable in some way to align with the EDC philosophy. This is also where Taylor makes a good point in his argument-it’s not about the price; it’s about the best gear.
Carrots and green jello is definitely not a Utah thing. I clearly remember the restaurant I worked at over 30 years ago having jello and carrots together. Ok, it was a cafeteria catering mainly to the retirement crowd but still.
can ATL get a sharpening-only-con? just hella abrasives, stones, strops, and all the new systems/setups.. it'd be a cool vibe(kinda more like 'lets celebrate and hone what we already have instead of constantly buying and replacing') and would encourage some of these knife companies to dip their toes into creating their own sharpening systems and lines. just show up, EDC something cool JIC you get pocket checked, and have the guys at the Wicked Edge or Gunny Juice booth turn it into a literal lazerbeam.. just a thought
I'm a big vape guy and throughout the 2016-2020ish timeframe (and still today) mainstream vape companies started having vape youtubers slap their names on products and sell the shit out of them. I really hope this doesn't happen with knives.
Well I don’t mind it as long as the reviewer is actually bringing their experience to the table in designing the knife so that it results in a better product than the in house designers could do alone. If they’re just slapping their brand on it without putting any effort into it just to sell knives then it’s a problem
Hey guys! Loved the show! Not sure if im the only one who asked for Taylor, probably not, but i would like to maybe see Tim from everyday tactical vids or at least a collab

33:25 I really doubt it's about tax brackets. At least not with James Brand. There are other American Made Models that cost less and offer the same. I just can't get behind their pricing. That's just within American makers. Throw in the Chinese manufacturers and the options for premium knives are more exponential. They're definitely not competing in price and that's fine. But I can't be the only one who thinks that, at their price points, they really don't have much of an edge over their competitors 🤷♂️
