- An easy to follow video on how to program a remote key fob for a 1996 - 1998 GMC Sierra.
More free keyless entry programming instructions available at www.ProgramYour...
1. Locate Data Link Port. It is located under dash on drivers side. Be sure you know which pins are 8 and 4.
2. Make sure there are metal contact pins in terminals 8 and 4. Connect 8 to 4 with a suitable jumper wire ( leave the jumper wire connected throughout the programming procedure). Make sure you know which terminals are 8 and 4. The vehicle will respond by locking and unlocking the doors to signify entering of programming mode.
3. Press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons together on the first remote to be programmed and after about 15 seconds, the vehicle will respond by locking and unlocking the doors. Release buttons on remote.
4. Within one minute, repeat step 3 on the remaining remotes to be programmed.
5. Remove jumper wire applied to OBDII port.
Very informative video, straight to the point, easy to understand ! Thank you
You're Welcome!
Programmed 3 remotes in 2 minutes! THANK YOU!
You're welcome!
I have a 1997 GMC Sierra Z71 and this video was spot on. Thanks!
Great! You're Welcome!
God bless you.
After hundreds vedios no body helps like you.
Thanks.
You're Welcome! Glad it helped
Worked like a charm. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks for this vid' .
Learned something else about my recent acquisition not noted in manual yet :-)
You're Welcome!
Later on I acquired a 3rd fob for the '96 GMC Sierra k1500.
Successfully syncd but one of other previous two would not resync.
Does the PCM only allow 2 fobs to be sync'd at a time ?
Awesome video, Couldn't of programmed fob without it. Thank you!!
You're welcome! Glad it helped
Worked like a charm. Thanks for for vid! Cheers!
Nice! You're Welcome!
The video that I was looking thank you very much
bro that's a problem i have been having on my truck for so long!! thanks!!!!
You're Welcome!
Mine worked out perfectly with your steps. Only difference is my horn doesn’t honk . I have 97 is that only for newer years?
I'm actually not sure if the horn honking is year specific or not.
I have a 2000 gmc sierra sl. My old key fob works, but i bought 2 new key fobs to give to family members. I tried programming the new key fobs by using "push the unlock button, then turn the ignition on and off two times" method. My truck wouldn't go into program mode. Will the paper clip method work for my truck?
Worked perfectly on a 1998 GMC Savana 1500
Great!
My 98 GMC 4x4 1500 SLE doesn’t activate the locks when paper clip is inserted. It came with a factory fob when I bought it but I have since lost it. I’m trying every which way but lose but nothing seems to work. My door lock and unlock does work though however it is a bit sticky on the drivers side. Any suggestions? Thanks for making these videos regardless. 🙏🏼
i just purchased some remotes and worked great,, but I am locked inside the Truck.... What do I do ???? !!!!
This is a very informative video and very, very helpful. However it did not work with the remotes that I have
shocked my finger but it worked
I've never experienced that but glad you got it to work.
My ports 4 and 8 also do not activate my locks when jumpered. My anti theft etc is fine. This truck came with a fob but I lost it. It’s a 98 GMC Sierra SLE.
Does the key need to be in the ignition?
No, it does not.
Would this work if the truck has never had remotes??
Probably not - the truck needs to have the factory remote option installed. If your vehicle does NOT have the option installed then it will be missing one or both of the # 4 and 8 pins inside the connector that is shown in the video.
Locks did not cycle when paperclip was inserted. Trying to take it out of antitheft mode as the alarm and lights go off when driving sometimes and I dont have the original keyphob.
Antitheft light stays on at all times flashing
It sounds like your vehicle is not equipped with factory keyless remotes, but has an aftermarket system.
@@PYR-Auto I had a remote from the factory and the alarm sounds the same as any gm alarm. Any ideas how to get it out of antitheft mode?
There is a 30 minute procedure to re-set the passlock (anti-theft system) that I will past below. However please keep in mind, typically the vehicle will not start if the factory anti-theft system is triggered, rather than an alarm and lights going off occasionally, as the anti-theft system is not an alarm, so I think you may have other issues.
Insert the key in the ignition, turn the key to run position ( do not start ) and leave it in that position for 10 minutes. Cycle the key to LOCK position, count to 10, then turn the key back to run position and leave on for 10 more minutes. After the 10 minutes is up, repeat the procedure (1) more time and the security system will relearn the PASS code.
Went to your websight and can't find one for 96 GMC sierra. My truck has factory fob and the ones i got for 96-99 doesn't connect with these instructions. What will replace my factory fob? And yes when i jump 4 and 8 it does cycle the locks.
Tophat, I'm having the same issues. On top of that I can seem to find any OEM Fobs that are in stock. I'm stuck with not being able to lock my 1996 Yukon.
I'm having same issue
It worked! Thank you.
You're welcome!
Any tips on a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 single cab without power locks
It sounds like your vehicle does not have the factory keyless remote option.
For some reason when I put the paper clip into 4 and 8, I don’t hear the clicking and my key fob won’t program either, do yk what the problem might be? Thanks
Usually that means the vehicle does not have factory remote option installed
Very helpful !
Thanks
Will this work on a 1997 GMC Savana?
I have a 96 and first I tried the paper clip and it didn't work. the locks didn't trigger in the beginning and I held the lock and unlock for 30 sec and still nothing. After trying that a few times I used an actual jumper and after trying that a few times as well and still nothing. Any ideas? Thanks
It sounds like your truck may not have the factory remote option installed - not all did in those years
When I put the paper clip in 4 and 8 you here the locks but I bought a new fob and I hold lock and unlock at the same time and nothing happens not sure what to do
If the vehicle is going into programming mode but the fob is not responding, there may be an issue with the fob you are using.
I have a 1997 but when I put the paper clip in it won’t like go into programming mod so how do i program it also is it due to now having the fuse in for my alarm system Bc I took it out ?
Its possible your Sierra is not set-up for the factory remotes, not all were in those years.
My new fob worked perfectly but now I can’t program my old one. Tried multiple times.
my truck goes into programming mode but when i hold the buttons down it never ed off again any help
It sounds like there may be an issue with the remote you are trying to use
How do I know if my truck came factory with a fob. I tried and my remote doesn’t work. Bought truck without remote and bought factory remote
Is there pins in slot 4 an 8 of the OBD port as shown in the video? that's usually a good indication. You can can also take your VIN number and call a GM dealership's parts department. They can look up the original build sheet for the vehicle to see what options it has.
Mine has both pins but when I put the paper clip in I get no response
I have no wire in OBD pin #8? So how do I get doors to cycle?
that usually indicates that the vehicle does not have the factory remote option installed so you will not be able to
What do you do if this doesn't work,I have a 99 Chevy Tahoe?
Are you sure your Tahoe has the factory remote option? Not all did in those years
When I jumped 4 and 8 nothing happened... is there something else to check.... my silverado has keyless entry from the factory but previous owner lost the key fobs.
Typically that does indicate the vehicle does not have the factory remote option. If you are certain your Silverado does have the option and you are certain you are jumping 4 and 8, there may just be a issue with the keyless remote system.
Thank you,
Same for the chevy 1500 as well?
Yes
It worked for about 12 hours then the key seemed to un program itself. Any help keeping it from in programming it’s self?
It should not un-program - it sounds like there is an issue with the fob or the vehicle itself.
How do I know which key fob will work do I just buy a universal one?
It needs to be compatible with your vehicle. You can find one here bit.ly/CarAndTruckRemotes
Will the newer gmc key fobs work for a 98 Sierra?
No, it needs to be specific for the year
Mine didn't work, changed out batteries and even tried a different fob, not working. Can I purchase a key fob and which one should I get. I have a 96 K1500 Silverado. Thanks.
Are you getting the vehicle into programming mode? Are you sure the truck has the factory remote option installed?
@@PYR-Auto it clicks door locks when I stick the paperclip in. I just assumed it had the factory installed remote lock since truck came with a key fob. Is there a way to check? Thank you for your help.
It does sound like your vehicle has the option since it is responding the to the paperclip. You can verify that by calling a GM dealership's parts department with your VIN number. They can look up the original build sheet for the vehicle to see what options it has.
@@PYR-Auto I checked the vehicle codes, in glove compartment, my truck did come with it. Is there a universal one I can purchase and which one? I have a 96 K1500 Silverado, thanks for your help 👍
@@angusjames639 I got my key fobs off eBay
Thanks.
Welcome!
My locks cycle but won’t program to my remote
sounds like there may be an issue with the remote
Where can I buy a key fob mine didnt come with one when I bought it but i does have the capability
I would reccomend bit.ly/CarAndTruckRemotes
@@PYR-Auto it only goes to 1997 and my truck is a 96 will the key fob on their site still work?
@@jackrogers7676,look on eBay..that’s where I got my remotes
Where do I find one of these keyless entry fobs.
check out bit.ly/CarAndTruckRemotes
Thanks bud
You're Welcome!
Well I tried it and it did not work on my 1998 GMC K1500
I heard the locks cycle but my fob won't program why is that?
There may be an issue with the key fob you are using
@PYR Automotive hey so I've been looking around and it's like impossible to find fob for my 96 silverado. I know the truck is compatible for it because I have the window sticker and hear the locks cycle but I just can't find a replacement fob. Everything I look at is 97-02 and the fobs for a 96 is for the suburban, got any tips?
Yeah I put a paper clip in but no automatic cycle of the locks.... button on the door works perfectly and a scanner can read the truck but a wire or paper clip does nothing so I can not program my remotes.... any help?
If the vehicle does not respond when the paper clip is inserted into the correct slots, then there is a good chance your vehicle may not have the factory remote option installed. If you look in your glove box, you will see the parts identification sticker with a list of codes on it. the code for factory remotes is AUO. If you do not see that code than your vehicle is not equipped.
Will this work on a 1 ton 96 chevy?
it will if it has the factory remote option installed
If I don’t have the remote where can I get a new one to program it?
I would recommend bit.ly/CarAndTruckRemotes
@@PYR-Auto There are no GMC's listed on that site.
Will it work without power locks ?
No , it will not
My truck won't even go into program mode when i insert the jumper cable
It sounds like your truck may not have the factory keyless remote option installed.
Does this work for a 1999-2000
It only works on the 99 if the truck is the old body style but you can find all of our GMC Sierra instructions here www.ProgramYourRemote.com/classified/sierra-browse-396.aspx
If your truck has never had a key fob programmed to it can you still add one to the truck?
Yes, but the truck needs to have the factory remote option - not all did in those years.
@@PYR-Auto how can you tell?
Hello. Great video. My Blazer has no pin in #8 slot. I understand I have the OBD2 connector but may have OBD1.5 diagnostics (late 1995 model). Do you know the pins for that scenario? Thanks.
A 1995 Blazer actually uses a different procedure altogether. You can find that programming procedure here www.programyourremote.com/classified/1995-chevrolet-blazer-keyless-entry-remote-key-fob-programming-instructions-listing-6304.aspx
What is the fob part number??
GM# 16245102
Mine won't go into program mode
Mine either, did you figure it out yet?
Its possible your Sierra is not set-up for factory remote - not all were in those years.
I'm just saying just to be saying.
This is basically a cheap process for thieves.
if you're car is already open the fob isn't going to help a thief - a locked vehicle would prevent this procedure from being done
i didint hear a lock sound when i stick the paper clip in the slots. Is there any issue that would make it not make the noise?
If the vehicle does not have the factory remote option installed
Same for the chevy 1500 as well?
Yes
I bought a 96 chevy k1500 power windows power locks but it didn't come with a fob how do i know if it had that feature and if it did can i program a new one to it without having the original
If there are pins in slot 4 and 8 of the OBD connecter as shown in the video then it should have the option installed. If 1 or both pins are missing then it does not have the option. You can also call a GM dealership with your VIN number and speak with their parts department. They can look up the original build sheet for the vehicle to see what options it has.
@@PYR-Auto thanks for your help
@@PYR-Auto it has the pins in 4 and 8 now is it possible it wont work the fob isnt cheap to order to find out it dont work
Do the door locks cycle when you jump the 4 an 8 pins?
@@PYR-Auto i will try i was hesitant to do that without having the fob
I can't program my remote I put it in on 4 and 8 but 8 has no wire coming through it so what do I do now
Usually when the pin is missing in slot 4 or 8 it means the vehicle is not set-up for the factory remote option, not all were in those years.
@@PYR-Auto do you know what is needed to to add the keyless entry?
I’m not sure exactly what it takes to add the system.
When I put the paper clip in the locks go off but the key won’t program. What could be the problem. Also I don’t have the key that was originally programmed
If the locks are cycling but the remote is not responding then there may be an issue with remote you are using
I have same issue and have tried multiple remotes. Is it due to having aftermarket stereo?
