Like all other ‘models’, NLP is a system that simply represents things that are already happening. It consciously represents things we are already doing, though mostly unconsciously; thought processes, relationship dynamics etc… This implies that all systems are ‘mostly bullshit’ if you compare them to the realities they’re created to represent. And this is ironically due to the distortions, deletions and generalizations that are explained and represented best in the NLP system. Unlike other systems, NLP is more expanding and flexible than other systems, other than NeuroSemantics that builds upon NLP.

I got rid of my migraines that plaqued me for 20 years thanks to NLP. I did not expect this, I had no real expectations from the seminar, but for me personally, NLP did help me with a lot of things in my life, the migraines gone being the best unexpected result.
It depends heavily on the instructor and the intention with which it is taught, but it helped me (and the people in our small group) a lot.

Also, the book got significant exposure, so i knew it couldn't be long until someone spotted these scripts.
This book and the realm of PUA leaned heavily on NLP. I remember going to free lecture at university and thinking - this is like a Scientology lecture. I tried hard to give it a chance, not be too sceptical, give respect to the teacher etc. It just set off my bullshit meter. Guys in the audience I'm sure were there because of The Game.

Is NLP bullshit? No, but quite a lot of this video is. For over 23 years, I have been an NLP trainer and Ericksonian hypnotist. I have literally helped thousands of people coming from the very worst circumstances transform their lives through the use of NLP and hypnosis. Although your critique of those who approach NLP in a New-Agey, cultish way is perfectly valid, you are rather ignorantly missing the very heart of genuine NLP: practicality. NLP is, first and foremost, about modeling what works. Modeling is not "stealing" as you sarcastically, and rather idiotically, imply. Modeling is about carefully studying the mental process a person undergoes when they solve a problem and then helping other people to replicate that same process within themselves. This is how, over a span of 5 minutes, I helped a 28 year old man put a permanent end to a habit of stuttering he had been suffering from for 14 years--something he had seen numerous therapists for, with no success. In addition, you broadly criticize NLP for stealing the ideas of earlier innovators and not really bringing to the table anything new. This is, once again, patently ridiculous and idiotic. Bandler and Grinder should both be properly credited for consolidating the very principles (NLP Pressupositions) that drive the entire NLP model. That collection of principles was undeniably innovative and brought together the ideas of earlier thinkers, but in a totally new way. Thus, declaring that NLP really brought nothing new is about as bone-headed as stating Einstein's General Relativity brought nothing new because he incorporated established mathematical theorems. Lastly, although I think it is certainly a positive thing to bring a certain critical reasoning into one's evaluation of NLP (or, for that matter, any other model of understanding), I don't think that that is what you are accomplishing here. Rather, to me, your critique comes off as an expression of a personal grudge, or a reflection of your own bad experiences, either in learning or practicing NLP. In sum, don't be such an ignoramus! Don't blithely besmirch the reputation of an entire field that has undeniably been a profound contributor to human progress for over 50 years.

If he were picking apart concepts, which he's not, and clearly can't, that would be one thing. Perhaps I'd even be intrigued. There are a myriad of Ph.D. psychologists/licensed therapists who (softly and gently) talk about how modern therapy doesn't get results (can be somewhat trash) and how they learned NLP and have had astounding results. And there isn't a Hypnotherapist worth his/her salt that doesn't talk about the extreme positives of learning NLP. (Not that you even need all that, as it's experiential). He has no clue what he's talking about and proves it in the video. Also, Bandler and Grinder give credit where its due. He's just trolling

I’m afraid I have to disagree, the fact that it’s a bunch of different techniques used earlier or after by other methodologies, and that they’re packed under the name of NLP doesn’t make it bs. That’s why any good therapist or specialist in the matter will be using all different sorts of techniques that work for them and their clients, regardless if it’s a traditional talk-through therapy, CBT, NLP or any other. What I don’t necessarily disagree with you on is the part in which you state that the community around NLP might be a mess, but that’s also not uncommon in just about any of those circles that at the end of the day aim at making people money. So - techniques work, whether you like it or not (which means NLP at its core is not bs). Cheers. :)

Well said. Therapy is aimed at making money. In order to do something well you have to do it full time. In order to do something full time you have to be able to make money doing it. I mean holy crap lol. Some placed are pretty expensive. But you can learn NLP relatively cheap. I've had people tell me that they actually learned more about people and how they really communicate in their first week of NLP training than their whole masters in psychology. The payoff is a small price to pay. The tecniques and communication skills have positively improved my life for sure.

Yes and no. The techniques themselves may work, that is a yes, but each one of them were made with their own disciplinary approach and epistemological basis, each of them with their own and very independent core between each other. If you get the technique out of its approach it is possible that it´s original goal its not acomplished, also it is highly possible that interpretation of its results and the adaptations that you do with the people along the way may be missguided.
And for the other comment, if therapy is only about making money, then we might as well stop. It´s unethical to reproduce practices that could do more harm than good just for the sake of a personal benefit.

My frustration with NLP is that some parts of it seem be at least somewhat valid, but they're so few and far between. For example, repeating another person's words really seems to improve communication, to a degree. But there is sooooooo much b.s. like "mirroring the decision strategy". So how does one filter the good from the bad, and how does one find the sources for the good bits?

    1. Bandler and Grindler were at UC Santa Cruz, not UCLA. 2. "Dr. Richard Bandler" does not have a doctorate. That should tell you something. 3. Bandler never met someone he did not want to take advantage of. 4. Bandler's goal from the Beginning of NLP has and always will be $$$$$$.

I cannot address this comment to the person on the video because I cannot find out who he is. What is his name? He is very good at putting a point across based on supporsition and imagination. Humans are very good at this which is why Trump, Putin, Hitler Johnson ect can all get millions to beileve what they are told. The only thing that he has got right is that there are some NLP so called experts out there who are not good at getting the results they claim. But they like him actually haven't studied NLP. If he had bought the book Heart of the Mind and tried the phobia cure on a friend exactly as described then he might have a different perpsective. Try it, the cure works! Anthony Robbins, not a good nlper in my opinion, did just that. He went to a seminar on nlp and within weeks was famously curing phobias of listeners on a radio programme. If you want to know about nlp i do not suggest you go on seminars, there are too many people talking about the techniques that were developed out of nlp, but read some of the early books. They are not trying to sell you personal development, or enlightenment, or success. They describe a science that is complex and built on other highly rergarded sciences in linguistics and anthropology and psychology amongst many. The originators did their homework, the narrator of this video hasn't done his, but doesn't he sound good and his language is so captivating and he looks so good... what a guy!

As anything else in life , NLP can be exploited by crooks especially since it's not clear cut scientific field (yet).
However I personally use many techniques , which I've polished over the years to a quite non negligible effect.
Frankly, I don't know how I could have survived without them.
They take considerable mental effort and diligence, but the effects sometimes feel like magic.

I have logged over 20 THOUSAND coaching/change work hours and have applied many many NLP processes and models in my coaching work and have seen it affect change in my clients lives. Apparently you have to actually apply it to know it is in fact not bull shit and actually works.

@@kristilee887 Being a practitioner doesn't make you an expert whatsoever. He is not demonstrating the faintest understanding of any of the concepts, and he's also not doing a good job of even bashing it either. There's a lot going underneath the surface of NLP that needs to be examined closer, and that is a problem with NLP. One of the reasons Bandler and Grinder were so effective, is that they studied the people they got these mindsets, techniques and concepts from directly, so they have a much deeper more holistic understanding of how and why these high performers (Satir, Erickson, Perls etc.) were so effective. They did a good job of replicating these beliefs, techniques, mindsets and understandings, but it's still not perfect. It's really, just an approach, a mindset.
Also, and it does seem to be a problem with NLP, is that not all trainings are created equal. And, although they did their best to make these "understandings" easy to replicate, I don't care what anyone says, you're not going to be an expert in anything after a 7 day training. A 30 day training from Richard Bolstad, a lot of practice, would be much better. Michael Hall recommends doing practitioner training 3 times before you move on to Master Practitioner (not from him btw). Either that, or do a lot of extra reading and study into the concepts behind it, concepts from people and fields such as linguistics and psycholinguistics (Alfred Korzybski and Noam Chomski), psychology (Jungian psychology, Developmental psychology, Fritz Perls/Gestalt Therapy), Hypnosis (Milton Erickson, Dave Elmann, George and John Kappas). And when you do this extra reading, it's easy to see how it all comes together, and all of the overlap. This isn't just about NLP. NLP practitioner training is just "pre-med" (a metaphorical pre-med, that leads to deeper understanding of human communication and how language affects us, and how our beliefs affect our results and various other concepts.) Once again, there's a lot of overlap.
For example, the book "Metaphors we live by" by George Lakeoff and Mark Johnson (linguistics professors) talk about the metaphors in our everyday speech that are representative of our beliefs, our deep seated beliefs and vary from culture to culture, and if you change the metaphor, you can change how someone views and issue/change the relationship to an issue. This overlaps with Milton Erickson (Double Doctorate of Psychology and Psychiatry - known as worlds greatest hypnotist) who, when having a conversation with Steven Heller Ph.D said that "all presenting problems and complaints are metaphors that contain a story about the real problem, that his approach is to build metaphors that have a solution to the problem; that belief systems themselves are metaphors and the individual operates and responds metaphorically to the world. (All Ties in with NLP adn NLP concepts - reframing and the use of metaphor). Not created by Bandler and Grinder, just made poplular, thrown into their NLP salad of concepts (they modeled Milton Erickson and studied these concepts in linguistics/psycholinguistics and it's embedded in NLP to a certain extent).
This also ties in with "Clean Language" creator David Grove who stated that the human mind creates a metaphor every 15 seconds, and he highlights the use of metaphor (the client's own metaphors about their problems) in therapy as well. (Once again, this is all about language, how we map our problems using language, understanding that language, using language to clarify when necessary (meta-model) and now clean language, and crafting therapeutic language (milton model/hypnotic language) and mental techniques to help facilitate change and help the client creat new, positive associations regarding their issues.
We also have Gordon Emerson, a pioneer in "resource therapy/ego state therapy," which was known as "parts therapy" in NLP, and, although not completely limited to, stemmed from concepts in Gestalt therapy (Fritz Perls - another person NLP was modeled on. There's a new therapeutic modality that has a different spin on ego-state/resource therapy called "Internal Family Systems Therapy," which is gaining popularity, is known to be very effective. Once again, NLP was doing this first (albeit vastly different in its presentation) with their "parts therapy" (although didn't originate it, which they alway give credit, and this is widely known).
These are just a few examples explained briefly and even somewhat haphazardly, but one can go on for days aout the overlap between NLP, modern therapy, and various concepts from various disciplines over the years and how it all ties in. NLP is a distilled version of these concepts with their own added flavor. It's like drinking finely blended whiskey from various different bottles mixed in with a liqueor, to make it a bit easier to drink, as opposed the 4 barrels that the blend came from. Hey, once again, a metaphor; It's as if we compare things to other things to make sense of the world around us and make comlex things simpler to understand. From that respect, NLP is a model and metaphor (in a sense) for deeper understanding of human communication, as it uses metaphors in it's presuppositions, to impart deeper understandings. It's an incomplete expression of all the subject it encompasses though.
From one end, it's limited because it's incomplete, but from another perspective it's absolutely brilliant for how much is squeezed in there and how cleanly and brilliantly it's explained.

I think this gentleman is a tad jaded haha, but this was still a well-done and informative video... I'm into NLP myself and I agree there is much quackery to be discerning about. Those desperate for healing can be curtailed by such quackery bc they want so badly to be healed.
Then again though, for those of relatively sound mind, going to a proper trained NLP practitioner can lead to great breakthroughs. I'm not certified and obvs neither is this gentleman, so it is easy to see why he made this cautionary video, I assume, without having experienced any positive breakthroughs.
The western system is very left-brain rational mind oriented; thus universities etc have a systemic approach that bypasses some of the mysterious insights that ancient techniques used in proper NLP can bring about.
I especially encourage people to learn about the NLP lineage of Tad James, who was steeped in ancient mysticisms from various parts of the world, and who integrated Eastern with Western practices in a very clinical way.
Its really all about developing rapport between your unconscious and conscious mind. The unconscious has everything you need to be healthy, and it even transgresses through behaviors that might seem useless, but are actually programs intended to heal and bring about safety, such as when someone has a panic attack - its not a malady, and the unconscious should not be "punished" for doing it. It is a survival strategy.
The linguistic part is what is meant by changing your understanding of your unconscious behaviors to see them as a pure libidinal impulse intended for the betterment of the individual. You don't cut out the roots of your behavior completely and lobotomize yourself (with pills, hypnotherapy, etc); an NLP practitioner simply guides you to acknowledge with language what your unconscious is intending to do, so you can get into a proper relationship with the impulses and signals of your libidinal unconscious.
I encourage folks to consider the left-brained rational control bias in this video...
So far as it goes though this was a useful video and very well-done, I cant dispute that. And he was really very objective and impersonal in the end about it. As a fellow youtuber and someone interested in seeing all perspectives, I say this video is worth its salt and I'm happy it exists, to give context with my more positive experiences with NLP.
Thanks so much for your effort, PDE!

Great explanation brother! I was going to post on here, as most people think that "everything" is a scam (generalization). There are numerous MD's/PhD psychologists and licensed clinicians that regard the efficacy of NLP (not that you need a title to do so). Some people just don't get it, and most people that try to bash it really don't know Jack sh*t about it. Critical thinking fading before our eyes with so many super powers introduced online go beyond evident based approaches. A colleague came up with it (somebody with a very steep downward and radicalized personal development over the last couple of years...) so I took a look and the first x pages of results about npl are glorious obvious snake oil salespeople. (my personal stance was that that stuff had been mostly debunked at least 10+ years ago)
But seeming the relatively low amount of views on all nlp videos it might be just not as popular overall.

NLP and other derivates changed my life many, many times over. I would not be here today otherwise. One issue here is that taking a class does NOT necessarily transfer into SKILLS you have developed. It takes practice in order to develop skills. FEW people leave those trainings and PRACTICE. The other issue is, "doing" NLP on one's self is something that is rarely taught effectively. This is something I had to learn on my own. The reality is so many trainers (any field, not just NLP) talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Few even know HOW to effectively transform themselves. Few NLP based trainings even talk about how to transform YOU.
It DOES WORK, if YOU do the work.

NLP is a methodology for codifying and transfering successful behaviours. As in, how do great painters ACTUALLY paint so well (since experts rarely understand how they do what they do).
At this point, there are hundreds of peer reviewed studies that prove the efficacy of the methodology.
The mainstream psychology academia put a tonne of effort (and dishonesty) into discrediting NLP after the creators modelled the 'parts integration' aspect of Virginia Satir's family therapy sessions, because Satir was essentially worshipped at the time. They thought she was just a godly talent, and now all of a sudden these NLP guys were reliably getting the same results?! UNACCEPTABLE, because it made the mainstream psych. People feel stupid.
For the record, Virginia Satir herself vouched for their codification of her methods, and even wrote a book with them.
For anyone curious, a big part of the 'discrediting' of NLP was carrying out studies to disprove claims that were never even made by the creators of NLP, and which included a total of ZERO people trained in NLP.

There is a lot of BS peddled under the name of NLP. But at this point the much bigger problem is that not enough people are aware of, or know how to properly apply, the basic techniques of NLP. Having so many varieties of "NLP", as you rightly point out, also contributes to the confusion. However, I must commend Richard Bandler for being an impressive teacher and communicator. Quite unique. I do not blame other communicators "modeling" themselves after him in turn, just like he and Grinder modelled THEIR own techniques on Satir, Erickson, Perls, and others.

Good general conversation! But NLP is a "basket" of techniques with an emphasis on sorting dominant sensory input which often people are unaware of. NLP offers a model of understanding how the brain works ,this allows folk to get a quick grasp on their "problem" THEN find ways to actually change understanding of a problem/behaviour. As you understand how you are affected by the "system" you operate immediately changes pop up. Most of the techniques NLP uses are actually well known but NLP gathers them together so we get easy access to many different exercises,. This allows fast "fixes" to problems! SO its not too popular with conventional councillor practice AS THEY DONT HAVE A LONG TERM CASH INCOME FROM 3 MONTHS "TREATMENT"

I think some "NLP" techniques could possibly have some value when used as an addition to hypnosis since the guided imagery of hypnotic suggestions don't need to be scientifically accurate in order for them to work. You could also say the same for self-"NLP" for acupuncture since you are often in a perfect hypnotic state during that (its called the "acu-nap").
However, it is quite disgusting that NLP cultuerally appropriated a lot of its material. Like I want to know more about this Pierre guy now knowing that he came up with that image manipulation technique. (Also, it seems that NLP uses the classic covert victim blaming narrative too so yeah...)

I suppose you would all agree that we all look at the world through our own unique internal representation and the meaning of the world is the meaning you give to it or for that matter on any subject even the food you eat, the way you talk, the words you use ( visual, auditory or kinaesthetic) and the way Jasper dresses in his own preferred style and his hair style that he feels are correct for him but certainly it does not mean it is absolutely agreeable to all and his views on NLP is certainly fine because that is his meaning he gives to it and it is his choice and NLP pre-supposes that we all have have choices. NLP also pre-supposes that communication is the response you get and one cannot not communicate and creating rapport is another fundamental pre-supposition. Jasper just might not realize that that he is unconsciously already into NLP if he might not already know. Gestures of his body movements is one sub-modalities of NLP. Perhaps we can all agree easily that no concepts are one size fits all. We are all right depending on our unique internal representations of the environment.
Perhaps we can all remain flexible and open to continuous education for your own personal growth and NLP also pre-supposes that the most flexible system in any system is the best system. Be your best. God bless !

Hi Guy, It was a combination of factors over the course of many years. As I say in the video I still really believe in personal development and NLP does have some good stuff for that also.
But over the years, while getting deeper into NLP and closer with the people practicing and teaching it, I started noticing the lack of critical thinking. And when reviewing the parts that actually work (and the once I used to teach the most to my students), like hypnosis, persuasion and basic social dynamics such as rapport, I started to see that those do not belong to NLP exclusively and have existed for much longer with NLP often teaching them verbatim.
Added to that is a lot of toxicity within the NLP community that seems to be counter to the message most NLP advocated spread. Anyway I tried to keep my personal experience out of this video as much as possible but I might make another video just about my own journey and experience as a trainer in this field. I'm happy to share if people are interested because it has been quite the journey and I am very torn between loving personal development and at the same time seeing a lot that is wrong within that community both with NLP and otherwise.
Have you had only positive experiences with NLP so far?
Thanks for your question and wish you a great life!!

Well, NLP has never been about critical thinking at all. None of the stuff is supported by science or evidence and heaps of research had confirmed this. Plus as you rightly say, some of the stuff in nlp are not inclusive to nlp but exclusive. It is afterall modelled on evidence based therapy.

    • @PDE_JasperGeluk
      @PDE_JasperGeluk  7 месяцев назад +6

Thanks for your thoughtful comment 😊
I think the problem for me lies in the “what is NLP” part. The things you learned in your course may be very useful indeed and you may also be able to help other people with it. Which is great so no issues there.
But someone else may also give an NLP practitioner course and teach absolute nonsense. There is no real definition of what is and is not NLP. This is something I noticed in the comment section of this video. There are some people trying to “protect” NLP, or rather their NLP version. Because in doing so it becomes even more clear how scattered the field of NLP is. One person calls it a technology making it seem like it is very precise. The other says NLP is just an attitude so therefore can’t be bullshit.
To me it seems that NLP people constantly try to hide behind vagueness, which is of course encouraged by teaching the Milton model. But a lot of the people commenting on this video seem to skip over me saying I have been in NLP professionally for over 10 years so I know what I am talking about. I was one of those trainers that used the techniques of vagueness to seem profound and imply complexity. It took me a lot of critical thinking and soul searching to come to terms with the simple conclusion I share in this video: “what is true in NLP is not new, what is new in NLP is not true”.
The most effective techniques I used to teach were there long before they were discovered or collected by NLP people. And the cool new or extra things are absolutely overloaded by confirmation bias and placebo effect. Mind you I worked with a lot of other NLP trainers internationally, I was part of the Richard Bandler assistant trainers team, I may not know all NLP people personally, but I do know a lot of them. And really finding out what is true and what does or does not work (considering biases) is not a strong suit for most of them. There is a lot that is just taken on face value with again confirmation bias and placebo used to enforce belief.
So if you are lucky you learned things from someone that are useful and this person calls it NLP. But there is also a lot of BS and it can be hard to see the difference when you are new to the field. Add to that the teachers that make it deliberately complicated it is all a bit iffy. Makes me think of the emperors new clothes. We all kept telling ourselves NLP is super profound, but when you pin it down to what “it” actually is. There really is not much left other then some stolen techniques from other field and yes I guess a certain attitude. But I know that Neuro Unconscious Brain Meta Restructuring Design Mind Engineering Control ™️ sells better and for a higher price than “I’m gonna fix your attitude by telling funny anecdotes and throwing some hypnosis your way”.
So yeah, haha sorry for the long answer. I might make a video about this in the future. I just had a baby and am still working on another video but maybe the one after that one 😋
Feel free to ask me more questions, I love to answer them and might also do so in a video.
Hope you get a lot of use out of your course and wish you all the best!!

Not a cult. Legit results. There's a lot more studies, but there's more in the works
      Zaharia C, Reiner M, Schütz P. Evidence-based Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy: a meta-analysis. Psychiatr Danub. 2015 Dec;27(4):355-63. PMID: 26609647.
Conclusion: Neuro-Linguistic Psychotherapy as a psychotherapeutic modality grounded in theoretical frameworks, methodologies and interventions scientifically developed, including models developed by NLP, shows results that can hold its ground in comparison with other psychotherapeutic methods.
Karunaratne M. Neuro-linguistic programming and application in treatment of phobias. Complement Ther Clin Pract. 2010 Nov;16(4):203-7. doi: 10.1016/j.ctcp.2010.02.003. Epub 2010 Mar 29. PMID: 20920803.
For some reason it doesn't show the conclusion, and I can't get access, but
      Evidence in research:
Despite the experiential evidence and case studies attesting to the efficacy of NLP in the treatment of phobias, the research literature base supporting the use of NLP techniques in this area is limited. However, there is some research regarding the efficacy of NLP in curing phobias.
Furman describes a study comparing the efficacy of four different brief therapies for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The methods studied were the NLP V/KD phobia cure, Eye Movement
HemmatiMaslakpak M, Farhadi M, Fereidoni J. The effect of neuro-linguistic programming on occupational stress in critical care nurses. Iran J Nurs Midwifery Res. 2016 Jan-Feb;21(1):38-44. doi: 10.4103/1735-9066.174754. PMID: 26985221; PMCID: PMC4776559.
Conclusions: The results showed that the use of NLP can increase coping with stressful situations, and it can reduce the adverse effects of occupational stress.
Wake, L., & Leighton, M. (2014). Pilot study using Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) in post-combat PTSD. Mental Health Review Journal, 19(4), 251-264.
      Originality/value:
Data suggest that NLP has potential as a therapeutic tool in the treatment of symptoms of anxiety and depression associated with a self-report of PTSD. An observation is proposed that these candidates experience an improvement in their emotional state when NLP is used which is statistically significant (p
