My favorite Tony Gwynn stat: Tony faced the Hall of Fame triumvirate of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz a total of 287 times. Glavine struck Tony out only twice in his career. Smoltz struck Tony out only once in his career. And Maddux never struck Tony out. So that means that in those 287 plate appearances, Tony struck out a TOTAL of 3 times. That's plain stupid. Hands down the best contact hitter in MLB history. That stat alone ends the conversation.
Jesse Stevenson yes that is very great and beond a normal baseball player but Tony was a great player in his own way just like many others and he was great I wish we could all meet him again I never got to but we’ll see in the future one day in heaven when our times come we’ll meet again
makes me tear up every time. my childhood hero. i️ remember watching him warm up the day of his final base hit (the game before his last) and i️ must’ve yelled his name 15 times and each time, he turned, waved and smiled every time. my dad always told me that he was a man to look up to and they shared the same qualities as family men. rest in peace to both. love you tony and dad
Kyle West Hyden thanks for the comment man that’s awesome yea Tony really was and still is a huge icon to baseball family and the world I hope one day he gets to see his padres win a title it would be a huge boost for the San Diego community especially after the chargers departure but it’s all good forever Tony Gwynn.
0:40 That moment when he closes his eyes and his hand starts to shake... He might've been the only guy on Earth who was not 100% sure he was going to make it to the HOF.
@Luis O. Valdez yea must have been thinking he wouldn’t but I’m glad he did and that’s great now can’t wait for Trevor Hoffman he’s sure to get in this year hopefully. Thanks for the comment man
Devin LaSalle yes it is laughable cause he was for sure getting in but he wasn’t sure it’s like he didn’t have any idea himself that he had faith in himself to make it and earn it he thought maybe he needed more but he had done everything already in his power to get in and that’s great I’m glad he got that call and now he’s forever in the HOF and us padres fans are grateful because he deserved it very much it was awesome I’m glad I found this video.
It would’ve been downright criminal and the Hall of Fame would’ve lost all its legitimacy had Tony not been elected in his first ballot. The only shitty part was that he wasn’t on 100% of the ballots. If ever there should’ve been a 100% ballot guy, Tony was it. No argument.
Your correct man non of us fans could ever know why he wasn’t 100% voted in by those damn writers it sucks but he got in regardless and that’s what matters. Go Padres.
I mean, literally only one player in history has been elected with 100% of the ballot. Babe Ruth didn't get 100%. Ted William's didn't get 100%. Walter Johnson didn't get 100%.
Jesse Stevenson I know right like come on man he’s done it all in his career he should’ve been in awhile after he retired already but it’s ok now he’s been part of the hall for years now and he’ll always be he’s in the history books of sports in the future along side Junior Seau and many other great athletes we can all count on that.
Robert: He was elected in his first year of eligibility, so he was never snubbed. I just don't understand how ANY of the writers could have possibly declined to vote him in. But it has always been that way. Not even Ted WIlliams was a unanimous Hall of Famer. I don't know what could possibly go through these writers' heads.
Y Marina yes 100% Tony should be in the hall of fame and I’m glad he is yes Mariano Rivera deserves to be in also with all his saves and I’m sure he’ll get there one day along with Trevor Hoffman, and as for Griffey of course 100% deserves to be in the hall of fame also and say this because he did his best he’s the all time saves leader in the MLB as of today and to top it off I say all these great deserve to be on the hall because they never cheated.
You can tell how much it meant to him once the caller identifies himself from the Baseball Writers Association. He has a double-blink that reads "Holy crap this is it," and his left hand starts shaking. Wish you were here TG19!
@Scott Stuhr that’s cool man Tony is loved by many and by all in the MLB and baseball in general I grew up watching padres baseball and learning about him so yea I can say he’s my favorite baseball player not just because he’s a padre but because he was a family man and people person who got along with everyone although personally I never met him but I wish I could have but he’s watching over us padres and fans he’s up there with Junior Seau yea it’s great to see it that way.
PiazzaGurl I wasn't able to grow up and see him play but I learned a lot about him and what he did for the San Diego community he was great always interacting with people and his laugh was funny as well I never met Tony but I know how he was by watching old clips of him playing and talking to fans at the ballpark years ago true icon and great man family man and person all through out.
im a san diego native.never had the chance to meet him.i do have an autgrphd ball.the san diego connection i do feel. If we could gt the chargers back.they belng to us
Your correct on that watching his rerun games as a youngster was great and now as a adult I understand why he is beloved by many of us and why he’s my favorite baseball player all time. Also mainly because he was a family man and genuine guy/ball player always giving it his all. I never got to meet him and I wasn’t born yet to see him play and was way to young to watch him before his retirement but watching him on air back in the day doing live Padres broadcasts with Mark Grant and company was great truly a legend. Go Padres!
I love this man. Still can't even deal with him being gone. And I know this sounds crazy, but I'd average going 8-10 times a year during his entire career and I promise with everything that he hit at least .500 in games I saw him play and that's a ton of games.
Well everyone who’s lucky enough to be elected get calls and he was elected in person on his day along with his other baseball colleagues, so I don’t know what your referring to.
@@osidechargerpadrelakerfan7261 yeah well he was the only one. Tony one of if not the greatest pure hitters in history. Ted Williams only guy who may have been better.
mannylora I don’t know maybe you feel Tony was a great person caring and loving towards everyone and great damn ball player and loyal to his Padres all 20 years worth damn. That’s probably why. Even after his career he did work in our community of SD and around the north county. I wish I would’ve met him it’s very sad most definitely but he’s in heaven looking over us all and these young padres talent and players and everyone and all we can do is keep his legacy going remember the fun times and his laughing. May he Rest In Peace.
@TheLyricsGuy yea your right obviously this is not my video but I enjoy Tony so much and it’s to bad I didn’t get to meet him but it’s ok I think I got this video from fox sports SD RUclips channel or someone else’s I forget but I’m glad I posted it on my channel.

I don’t know what he saw but he got his phone call from the writers and was notified at home and that was cool, the full documentary on tv was cool to see I wish I could find it but I only got this little clip.
No matter how many years that pass, when I see his face and hear his voice I shed a tear. He was so special to us in San Diego.
My favorite Tony Gwynn stat: Tony faced the Hall of Fame triumvirate of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz a total of 287 times. Glavine struck Tony out only twice in his career. @Job sure of course
MR. PADRE!
Thats fucking insane
He was on base before he had breakfast in the morning.
we miss you tony
Yes he’s very well missed by San Diego and the whole baseball lovers around the world.
Best pure hitter of my generation bar-none RIP
Best pure hitter of almost any generation. The Tony's only come around once or twice. He was pure class.

That's beautiful 😢 God bless you brother. 🙏

It's laughable that Gwynn ever had any doubt he'd make the Hall. First ballot guy without question- speaks to how humble he was.

I like how he says "I might make the hall of fame"
YES TONY YOU ARE IN THE CONVERSATION OF BEST HITTERS EVER!!
I think Tony Gwynn was the only person who wasn't sure if Tony Gwynn was going into the Hall
Probbaly right on that I agree I'm very happy and glad he made it though.
He was a shoe-in. No question.
Joe Lyon you got that right
Joe Lyon Gwynn didn’t think so cause he was hoping the phone would ring lol, He probably thought that there were be enough idiots to not vote him in
I will never understand how Tony was not a unanimous hall-of-famer. How could you look at his career numbers and not elect him?
Jesse Stevenson I know right like come on man he’s done it all in his career he should’ve been in awhile after he retired already but it’s ok now he’s been part of the hall for years now and he’ll always be he’s in the history books of sports in the future along side Junior Seau and many other great athletes we can all count on that.

Y Marina I don’t think ballots matter at this point but eventually they all got in and Mariano is next to go in at some point a guarantee it
Struck out on avg 39 times a year...that's hof..
One of, if not the best hitter of ALL time.
Everthing about Him was Baseball.. 1.of 1.
You can tell how much it meant to him once the caller identifies himself from the Baseball Writers Association. He has a double-blink that reads "Holy crap this is it," and his left hand starts shaking. Wish you were here TG19!
I remember TG playing pg for the Aztecs in college then watched his extraordinary talent on the baseball diamond.
As a mariner fan I absolutely loved Tony and way he played the game. RIP
R.I.P Tony. One of the best hitters to play the game.

The most humbled are usually the most deserving.
Tony, there was NEVER any doubt.
Best pure hitter the world has ever seen. Rest easy, Mr Padre

The consummate professional...
Tony Gwynn and Ken Griffey jr. were the face of baseball.
That was true back then for sure now it’s Tatis Jr. and all the young guys for the Braves Marlins all the teams that are rebuilding.
the best hitter i ever saw from start to finish. one of the best to ever do it. RIP Tony
One word for tony class
Best pure hitter . Albert einstein with a bat. R.i.p we all miss you

They should have done it in person! He was such a great player
Well everyone who’s lucky enough to be elected get calls and he was elected in person on his day along with his other baseball colleagues, so I don’t know what your referring to.
Beyond deserved
What a guy‼️‼️
How could Tony Gwynn have any doubts that he would be elected??
Don’t know he just did
MIGHT make the hall of fame. His humble nature was inspiring.
Was Tony really sweating getting in? One of the greatest hitters to ever play. Should be 100%.
He felt he didn’t think he did enough but luckily he was wrong and he made it.
@@osidechargerpadrelakerfan7261 yeah well he was the only one. Tony one of if not the greatest pure hitters in history. Ted Williams only guy who may have been better.
How humble of a man....we miss you so much tony
❤️❤️
Tony was my idol as a kid with his jerry curl and 31 inch bat. It did me well swinging for contact. TG RIP
Nice thanks for sharing
@@osidechargerpadrelakerfan7261 For sure Tony and Junior were San Diego so many memories.

Wish they did the knocks like nfl
Oh yea MLB hard Knocks sorta thing haha that would be awesome
He was a great human being!!!
It sure seemed like he was 100% genuine human being.

R.I.P Tony, a class act and legend
R.i.p legend

What happened to such a great man at such a young age? The world needs these types of men!!
@Houstonbornwhiteguy I know man we all miss him wish he was still around,he’s in heaven watching over us all and sending best wishes to these young padres making their way up too the big leagues that’s what I believe.
His swing was smooth as honey. Loved the guy..
