I'd say they're on opposite ends of the "can't eat properly" spectrum, not opposites in general, since theoretically there are reptiles that can actually eat successfully!

Cabbage is an acid-base indicator, so adding an acid or base changes the color between purple and blue/turquoise. Mixing vinegar into cabbage juice is actually a really fun science experiment to do with your kids!
I wondered if someone was gonna say that! As soon as they mentioned mixing the turmeric with the cabbage juice to make green, I was like "oh no" xD
I did that in school a few weeks ago! It was very fun
to be fair, all the other red and purple dyes are as well, but the difference is that those are fruits and already contain some acid in them, while cabbage doesn't really. if you were to neutralize let's say blueberry dye with enough baking soda, it too would turn into grey blue.
Blueberries contain anthocyanin as well!
My soul was laughing/crying a bit during that. I had recently forgotten about cabbage magic until I was egg dying this year

I'm not an exotic vet or anything, but I have to say that Rex looks healthier than ever! I love that she has this whole enclosure and you can really tell she's thriving!

It's definitely enrichment for Rex, it's so good for her mind to be stimulated with new experiences. She gets a healthy treat and sensory play at the same time. Then tomorrow after closing she will have another water change while she watches you clean up her mess. So win-win for Rex, lol. The Easter gift that keeps on giving.

I have to admit, it was painfully slow waiting for Rex to get her eggs. And hysterically funny watching you roll them in, Emily. Thanks for the stream, it's fun watching her. For a pink dye that works extremely well for eggs, try boiling red onion paper! You'll end up with a vibrant, beautiful color and since the paper doesn't contain any of the sulfuric compounds found in the actual onion, it should be perfectly reptile safe.
All onion skins are good for dyeing eggs. Regular onion skins dye eggs a beautiful caramel color.

Yes, I’ve noticed you can’t even tell her snout was once turned upward. Aside from being small, I don’t see the signs of being cramped in a small enclosure, and metabolic bone disease. She looks great. Maybe I’m too used to looking at Rex and not other gators, but aren’t her teeth almost normal now? They used to stick out so far.

Very cute. I loved watching all the animals get holiday treats. Egg steamers are one of the best kitchen gadgets. If your eggs are exploding, you're probably poking the wrong end. It should be the more rounded end, which has an air pocket.
Oops. I definitely poked the smaller end on all of them 😆

this is the kind of thing i feel could be fixed with some clever design of the egg poking tool, like making it a shape that invites poking the wide end or something.

5:00 Ed cracking the egg and putting it in the dye reminded me of tea eggs! It's from somewhere in East Asian I believe. They make like marinate to marinate the cracked hard boiled eggs and it gives the eggs like a marbled/cracked dyed look once the shells are peeled off

I do my eggs with red cabbage every year. Makes for a beautiful robin's egg blue. Then I speckle with chocolate for extra realism. So cute!
If you cover the eggs with a sheet of paper towel, the floaty patch will also dye. It's a tip I learnt from making tea eggs.
Does it all come out the same color or does the " floaty patch " come out lighter?

😂 Southern Living magazine had veggie dyed Deviled eggs this month. They used beets & turmeric too! Kale for green next time, carrots for orange. I would do this for critters, fancy eggs for humans not so much!

This video was so fun (all of them are fun!) but I just can't get over how Rex's life has changed for the better. From a tiny box to a full habitat - it still makes me tear up to see her thriving! Can't wait to bring my nibling to see her and the rest of the reptiles in person (hopefully this summer!)

Yeah, I was surprised bc it's used to color things all the time. But I only learned this watching food being made myself, so can't blame em
not a problem at all - its not UV stable. Just pop any cutting board or cooking spoon for half an hour into the sun.

a tip working with egg cookers: as far as i saw, you poked holes in the pointy end of the eggs for their pressure vent, but it's actually way better to poke the hole in the opposite (round) end, because that's where the air bubble tends to be, so the egg white won't come out the vent while they're cooking.
I love rex's charge, especially when the egg keeps on rolling away. Good exercise i think

The best enrichment is the messiest enrichment! Such a fun video and super cute! Rex goes so hard when it comes to food, but I also find it super cool how she can be gentle enough to pick up the smaller pieces too.

Edit: I don't know if it's snake-safe but there is a tea called Butterfly Pea Flower (guess what it's made from ha ha) that's a very pretty bright blue.
Edit, edit: I think the biggest problem with the eggs for Rex is how small they were. You might have better luck if you got bigger eggs. Duck eggs maybe?
It is! I have a bag of the flowers. I've forgotten what it is, but I think vinegar will turn the blue tea to a beautiful purple color.
@@joyceb.8194 Try lemon not vinegar! The acid turns it the other color, but lemon is drinkable in tea.

I like how every animal could easily eat the white, but couldn't get the yolk but Allie couldn't eat the white but she could eat the yolk

She got so much attention when she was a baby. We never fed her anything that was alive. We hand fed her a lot. She was Also handled almost every day. She's the sweetest, never bit anyone.

Great video. I have a question though. Back in the house, there were so many videos where you guys had Rex out and I even recall a time lapse of Ed cleaning Rex’s room while she was stoating about in there still. I’ve noticed that you guys are doing things differently at the facility.
Is this because of a change in Rex’s sociability and behaviour? Or is it a conscious decision to allow her a more naturalised lifestyle without as much human engagement? Or possibly due to regulations on keeping an alligator in a public zoo setting?
I’m honesty just curious that the approach to contact with Rex has changed so distinctly.
They had a signal for feeding time for Rex back when she was living with them but they don't use that signal anymore and Rex now associates someone behind the door to her enclosure with getting food (even if they're just wanting to clean). I also think Rex has gotten bigger and is more confident moving around her enclosure, so she could be more territorial as a result. So it's likely a combination of the two that makes Rex a bigger risk than before even though she's still comfortable with people. It's likely safer to have these precautions to avoid accidents and also instil good behaviours (like waiting in the pool while Emily cleans) into Rex to make maintenance easier on everyone while also keeping Rex's stress levels down. This is just speculation on my end though, it's as you said, it could also be health and safety regulations. ^-^
It could also just be a general "we have the space/ability to remove her to more effectively clean without having to go around her or move her to clean that spot, so we're going to"
That's how I took it anyway. If you can do something more effectively, more safely and you have the resources to be able to do that versus a time when you didn't have that ability, why would you not take the opportunity?
Dunno, just my opinion for what it's worth.
My parents would never allow me to have any type of reptiles so I just binge watch your videos to try and get over the fact that I won’t be able to own one of these cuties

Speaking of crackled eggs, there's a Chinese street food called a tea egg. You hard boil an egg, roll it gently to crack the shell a little all over, then boil it again in black tea and various spices or sauce. It leaves a beautiful redish brown pattern and is surprisingly tasty.
Is it my imagination, or does Rex seem to be getting bigger every time she appears? I know in past videos, Emily said she is permanently stunted, but now she looks like she’s getting bigger.
i think shes been growing since i saw she needs to curl her tail a bit to fit in the plastic bin, but it may also have something to do with how were mostly seeing her from away from her enclosure or something. idk how to describe it completely lol

maybe? I also think she looks bigger. Crocodiles usually grow for as long as they live, so maybe she still can. The permanently stunted part might just include her hip and skull deformaties and not the total size?
She has definitely grown since moving into the facility. Just shows that they are taking excellent care of her!
