Laura, thank you SO much for this video and slowly explaining and showing how to thread your Juki! I’ve seen other videos that show how to do this but they go pretty fast. I bought the TL18 quite awhile ago but I’m a little intimidated by her as I’ve only ever worked with a $100 Brother. The Juki is still in the box. 😂 But this video really helped me get over my hesitancy. I will set her up and read the manual. I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos. You’re a great teacher! Thank you!

Thank you so much for the very kind comment! I felt the same way when I opened the Juki TL18 box! :) Have a wonderful day!

Very helpful Laura, thank you! I just got a TL18QVP for bag making, garments and quilting piecing and have not yet tried FMQ. Your quilt is beautiful!

Hi! I teach how to use the juki tl machines at the store where I work, and have 2 TL machines, a TL 2000qi and the TL-18 QVP. Love the TL machines! What you showed at the end of the video where you said you raise the foot up to float it above your fabric, you pointed to the presser foot pressure knob. Yes, you do raise that all the way up to release the pressure. It’s exactly how the manual says to set it up. But I feel you mixed up between the microlifter and the foot pressure. The microlifter is next to the bobbin winder and yes is great for free motion quilting so you can adjust the height off the quilt to help get better stitches since the free motion feet are not adjustable. And that height adjustment depends on how thick your batting is between your quilt layers. I feel you were describing this, but pointed to the wrong knob. The TL-18 is the only machine in the TL series of machines that has a microlifter. But all the TL machines have the presser foot pressure adjustment feature.
Very good and detailed video. And great close up for the needle threader. That needle threader can be confusing. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your helpful video. I especially liked the detail you went into on using the threader.
I also teach at my local seeing machine store - usually Ruler Foot Quilting classes - but I also use the microlifter for that. It makes it so the machine floats over seam intersections beautifully. It's why I love the TL-18 - because it is the only machine in the TL series that has this option.

Great video. I wish you would have shown how or if you do anything different with the bobbin tension. I tend to have problems with that. One guy told me to loosen it. He took all the tension out and the thread was very loose. When I go to FMQ I get bad stitches.

That is a great suggestion! My Juki TL18 is in for maintenance right now. I will see, what I can do to show more detail. Thank you!

Are you using the needle plate that came with your machine or the one with a larger hole for thick fabrics?

    • @WatchLauraSew
      @WatchLauraSew  2 года назад +1

Hi! That is a great question. I found for most of my bag making that I needed the throat plate for thick fabric with the larger hole. I tend to just leave it on the machine all the time for quilting and bag making.

I just purchased mine earlier today and while I was in the store I tried to do some free motion quilting and it was awful
We had the open toe foot on, at some point I do remember adjusting the stitch length to zero but the store employees had me raise the pressure foot pressure all the way to the top and also engaged the micro power lifter and I still could not get my sandwich underneath
I was using one layer of cotton two layers of insul bright and one layer of warm and natural cotton batting. It just couldn’t clear. So of course I’m extremely disappointed
They took me over to the Janome 1600 I believe and I had no problem whatsoever but the clearance from the needle plate to the Quilting foot was a lot higher
two things that you did not mention in your video is what type of needle you were using and also you didn’t show the other side of the needle bar where the Quilting foot has to rest
Do you think I just had too many layers? I’m able to quilt that thickness with my singer quantum stylist and that’s not even designated quilting machine

Hi! I have put some thick layers through my Juki TL18. But let me check your layers on my machine later today! I have never had to adjust the microlifter, except to go over a thick seam of wax canvas and cork. I do adjust the foot pressure according to the type of sewing or quilting that I am doing. I will do a short video showing the foot setup with a closer view. As for the type of needle, I change it according to the application. But in general, I use either an Organ Universal 90/14 or Schmetz Quilting or Schmetz Microtex 90/14, depending on the application. There are occasions that I will use a Jeans or Leather needle if I am sewing a thicker fabric bag. I think... what you did... was excellent! You tried using the machines and testing it out using your requirements! That is fantastic!

@@WatchLauraSew that would be absolutely wonderful if you could sort of duplicate what I’m doing.
It is still sitting in the box I haven’t taken it out and set it up yet lol
That’s my plan for later today. I also have a RUclips channel not necessarily for making money however I can post a video to my channel and send you the link so you can see what I’m talking about
Hopefully I’ll have more success at home
Time to check my needle inventory because most of mine are Singer and the lady at the store said not to use a singer needle in the Juki’s because of the way they are designed something about having movement and of course we don’t want that in a straight stitch machine

@dcwatashi A video would be great to see! I am looking for some insul bright to try it myself!

@@WatchLauraSew I still haven’t unpacked it lol it’s still sitting in the box in my kitchen. I had to clear some space to move my regular sewing machine over so I can put the Juki on my sewing table. I feel so bad I feel like I’m abandoning my singer sewing machine ha ha ha. But I just told her that I can use her for doing the satin stitch on appliqués😀😂😅🤣
Should I have the same issue once I get it set up then I’ll record it and upload a short video to my little RUclips channel and send you the link. I can’t remember if it was your video or some other one of the 10,000 videos that I have watched, somebody loosened the screw on the I believe open the toe quilting foot they never showed me that in the store. They didn’t even know I how to quilt in the store I was dumbfounded. How can you sell quilting machines and not know how to demonstrate your product line??? Sigh
Also I follow that RUclips channel called Juki junkies and on their website they only sell the Schmetz chrome needles for this machine with the exception of maybe a top stitch or I can’t remember now but primarily they’re only selling the chrome. Could you possibly send me a link to the needles that you? Some of the Organ needles are not suitable for this machine

@dcwatashi Actually, JukiJunkies is a great resource for equipment and supplies! My Juki came with Organ needles from the dealer where I bought it, so I just bought the same ones and I haven't bought any recently. Recently, I have been buying more Schmetz. And, I think that I bought from JukiJunkies... :)
