Arrived in Australia July 1985 . Discovered Paul Kelly 1986 . Has been a large part of my growth as a person ever since . His music and lyrics are truly timeless .
So 1985, I would sneak backstage to listen to Paul Kelly and The Coloured Girls / The Messengers nod my head at the end of the night and walk home. I was 18..........Now at 49,years old it's almost as if his storytelling and his songs match all of our Australian lives........we all grow older together listening to ourselves and his stories echoing in ourselves............
Yes, when I first heard this song, I cried for the bloke stuck in the clink at Christmas (and i'm a big, stocky lad), missing his family & friends, imagining it to be an ideal Christmas because Christmas is always ideal if you are absent from home - it is definitely a cracking song - a human story.
We stumbled across this song last Christmas and added it to our family Road Trip songs of songs. To say we ‘love it’ is an understatement... it somehow connects with all of us. What a gift!
What a great man.. I'm not sure what to say...I got saved by the salvation army I ended up homeless in Sydney the worst time of my life... the salvation army pulled me up and saved me big time...I owe them so much.
@@vitpac9840 Sorry for the late reply. I don't search my past posts very often. Adelaide is not really a city from which you would be proud of coming from. It's considered, within Australia, as being a bit daggy. A bit naff. A bit uncool. The fact that he is proud of that ignites some sort of pride in those of us who were always considered uncool. I like it.
Paul Kelly is a LEGEND. At my funeral his songs will comfort my family and at all my kids birthdays and family events his music is played. Much love Mr Kelly.
No one makes me cry like Paul Kelly does. Actually, no one else moves me at all. He's packs so much emotion in his songs. It resonates with this unemotional Aussie bloke. You're a legend, Paul.
Paul kelly ... we ( all of us, Australia and the world) are so lucky that you didn't get to do the song you wanted to do for that xmas project. If you had, we would not have had the incredible pleasure of How to make Gravy in world today. It touches all of those places as all of those long time christmas carols. Family. Looking for a new start. Thinking of home. Reflecting on all the small things that we miss when they are taken away. Thank you.
My son is in jail. I loved this song and its raw emotion long before my son ended up in jail. I knew that his trajectory was going to send him there. I used to cry when I heard the song years ago. I cry all the more now that it's come true.
This song has been on heavy rotation amongst my varied music list for well over 14 years now...love the way Paul tells vivid and immersive stories, true Aussie legend.
Simple perfection. Just the legend, his guitar, his amazing storytelling, timing, voice, and soul. Best version I've seen or heard. Paul, come back to Virginia soon!
I’ve always added a dollop of tomato sauce to the gravy, ever since hearing this song for the first time. I have no idea why this song makes me so emotional, it just does, and who cares. Love it.
Wow. This is the first time I've heard this particular performance. Brilliant. Thankfully, it's not the first time I have heard his brilliance. Paul Kelly with Vika and Linda Bull at the Kimberley Moon Festival a few years ago were simply outstanding. We (my beautiful partner Kimberley and I) spent a day driving to get there - and we will do it again in a heartbeat if the opportunity presents again. Thank you Paul (and Vika and Linda).
Yes we listen Mr. Paul Kelly anytime and that in my opinion is the best xmas song ever, we play it anytime, but an aussie xmas is just like the man said, tables back half cut or flat out pissed music loud as and paul was on many times. freakin love his music.
Had the pleasure of seeing Paul in London a good few years back at the scala club. A great gig and Good company. 5 Aussies who took the pee outta me and my mate Rob. No anger no upsets as we took the piss back. An evening of Fun Fun Fun. Aint that what good life is about. Well i believe so!!!!!!!!
Lovely talk and song. Not his best song but a good un and lovely to listen to in the context of the intro/talk. Love Paul Kelly. I was a radio DJ for 24 years and played lots of his stuff during that time. Finally got to see him in NYC with my niece a few years ago, he was playing with his nephew I believe. Nice cosy concert. Maybe 300-500 people. But I wanna see him live with a BAND!! Gracious man. Just discovered this great song 'Everyday I Hear My Mother's Voice' recorded by him and Dan Sultan about the Footballer Adam Goodes - that is one of my favorite songs now of Paul's - maybe because it is the best one that is new to me - video released on youtube with segments from Goodes and pix of his mum circa 2012. Also saw The Church at this venue called the High Line Ballroom lower west side of Manhattan. Dinner and music. Terrific place to see music if you visit NYC! More Paul!!
Like many I suppose I came to Paul first through To Her Door, and then soon after this song too. A theme common to both is the big-heartedness in giving a person the chance to redeem themselves after a screwing up, there's the hope, the compassion and I guess the love as well. Folks should probably give it more time than they do.
YEAH!!! Paul Kelly stating he was interested in recording a Robbie Robertson song! Two of my favourite musos + Robertson grew-up in 'Cabbagetown', Toronto, Ontario, CANADA where I presently reside. Coincidently, I used to reside in Melbourne & Sydney aswell and miss Australia dearly! : )
I actually prefer this rendition of How to Make Gravy. Paul Kelly gives it more raw emotion and heart and soul just singing it solo with his guitar compared to the original song and music video.
Most of us Aussies have a recollection of Christmases like this even if we have never been close. The last time it was 100 degrees was in the 70's and not was that a hot couple of years, ever since it's been 40 degrees.
the greatest description of jealousy ever written: "my mind it plays up, multiplies each matter, turns imagination into fact" - genius

Such a beautiful song. An ode to how Christmas is often a more poignant time for a lot of people.
One of the most honest and touching songs ever written . GENIUS! !!!

He meant 100 degrees Fahrenheit which is 37.7 degrees Celsius. The weather has never been 100 degrees Celsius anywhere on Earth.

It's a good song, but why doesn't anyone feel sorry for Joe's victims. You don't get put in jail for being a good bloke.
