You could burn them and turn them into ash for the garden or grind up.
Adding a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your broth will help the minerals leach from the bones and your bones will soften while cooking them. Thanks for these vlogs
Nice!....Audio perfect. No low voices and high music....BTW; I wish to try Caribou....Jerky sum up, Eric!
We love living in a winter climate where we can sit leftovers outside in a cupboard to keep cold.
Cooked for 4 days? This is all for your dogs? Did you do some for the family? The dogs were eyeing the bone broth.. WOW. Nice to have an out door freezer..!! I used two coolers at first here.. it works.. nice video. Have a great day..!!
It was on and off for 4 days because we had it outside originally and the fire died down at night. But yes it was all for the pups, they are definitely spoiled!
It's such a blessing to have food in the pantry you put up yourselves.. You know what is in it. A little time, a lot of good, satisfying meals.
May i sugest that when your broth has cook that you take a hammer to the boons in order to retrieve the bone marrow that has a lot of nutrients for the dogs.
I’m sitting here at home in Louisiana thinking, bears?! Aren’t you worried about one getting you? Meanwhile in Alaska, you’re probably all, What about alligators?! Those things are scary as heck and they’re all over the place down there! I guess it’s all in what you’re used to. One person’s mundane is another guy’s monster.
I'm in North Carolina, and when the night temps start to drop down, I'll turn off my solar-run fridge, and use a large cooler that I'll set outside overnight (inside during the day if it's too hot). I do buy ice when the days get warm, but it lasts a good week or more. When it stays below 50 during the day, but cold at night, I'll use the frozen soda or milk jug technique. It saves the solar for other things like drying hair or ironing clothes (or, lights!) It works perfect, and I don't mind stepping out into the cold in the morning to retrieve my cream for coffee! I love not paying an electric bill to run all the energy-hogging devices (fridge).
If you guys could find a way to grind those bones up, they would be helpful in putting bone meal inside the holes that you dig to plant gardens. My in laws used to do this in Chicago although they bought bone meal in the store. Don’t know if it’s the same thing but it’s a thought!
انا شاب عربي اشاهدكم بشكل مستمر، و انا معجب جدا بطريقه العيش التي تعيشونها 🌹
Love your videos and the way you work together. Keep up the good work and god bless.
Using an ice chest for your fridge that is the exact way the way I used to do in the Amish community
dogs across america want you two adopt them !
Love what you guys do. You're inspiring @ Simple Living Alaska.
Ever think about getting a vommercial-grade or heavy duty grinder? You can grind up bones, guts, etc, for chicken feed, dogs, etc. Set it aside exclusively for "NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION" purposes.
You guys are handy. You could probably re-purpose a garbage disposal for this.
Hi there. In the future, you could place the bones in a pillow case or some other type of bag, hammer the bones down to bits, and add them to your garden that way. This is a great way to add bone meal fertilizer to your garden without purchasing any.
Do you not worry about the food attracting animals
SO MUCH FUN,,ALWAYS SOMETHING TO DOOO,
I’ve been freezing and canning for the dog and for us for years. It works really well. Of course I have to pressure can.
Nice videos! Love the way you treat your dogs!
Every time I feed my dogs any kind of pork meat and broth they get diarrhea.
Apparently if you put vinegar in with the water in the water jugs they stay cold longer....I have not tried it but I think Al from Lumnah Acres did a video about this....Also Mapleberry Farms is also off grid and they have a solar powered fridge freezer....
Good to know, we will have to try this :)
Love your videos! I also watch many others, that have chosen to live off-grid, and wasn't sure if you had ever seen, "The Boss of the Swamp" site. Here is an example that might interest you in home refrigeration using nature. ruclips.net/video/w68z-YJvei4/видео.html. His is on the East Coast up on Canadian border in New York and has a broad series that might be interesting to you guys. Anyway best of luck!
Roy Slay thanks! We have checked out his channel :)
You guys are amazing. If i hzd to do over my life iwould chose homesteading great job,
Please buy cloth grocery bags! I ve been using them for about 35 years now. If you buy the right kind they are strong and washable. You won t need separate bags for each vegetable or your grocery items. But either way - your vlog is so interesting! I stumbled upon it about a month ago and watch one every time I get a chance. I love your dogs! I wish you two the very best in your new(ish) life in Alaska!
Get a top load freezer with a temperature power activator. The following link is a video of Brad Lancaster in Arizona doing this. The link is to the time of it. But it would work good with a solar system as the chest freezer doesn't let the cold escape when opened.

Your dogs are eating better than my dogs! No wonder dogs were hanging out around fire in another video, they were making sure you were cooking the way they like it 😂
Did yo figure out use for bones? if dogs and cats cant eat then after making broth is it possible todry and grind up for bone meal fertilizer for garden or burn for ash fertilizer for garden?
We take all of our bones after making stock/broth and put them through our food blender - it makes a nice thick bone gravy that can be added to the dogs meals - you can hear the blender grinding all the bones to a fine mush
Enjoyed your video, thanks
I would be concerned about bears coming after that broth and meat
That's cool that nothing got to your bone broth when it was outside. Nice job. The dogs must love it. Ice chest is a great way to store fridge stuff in the winter. Take care.
Bandit (our catahoula) got into the bones but no grizzly bears!
Blessings
I'm slowly viewing your previous videos. What an adventure. Have not heard how you all will be earning your living up there. BTW I hear converting the freezer to a fridge can be economical in terms of power use.
Tracey Osborn, we talked about that awhile back in the trip to Anchorage video but we do not work presently. Hoping to figure something out soon in terms of a fridge solution. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
Looks like frozen jars would break
She has got to love you and I'll tell you why. The way that she works with you and and she can use a Saw and then to beat it all she has to poop in a out house.and she's good-looking.....man you better keep her for sure.. love watching your videos y'all are living well..god bless y'all
Concerning your bone broth jars. As you aren't pressure canning them, could you use recycled jar lids to save money ? (Of course sanitized first)
Now you need to make food for your cats. If your successful i need the recipe. I've tried to make fresh food for my cats but they refuse to eat it. They're 12 so I guess i should have started when they were kittens.
Your life is...so different to mine.
Can't wait to see what all you grow in your garden come spring and how it does. You mentioned previously you plan to keep bees. Have you had any luck finding someone that has hives in your area yet? And how many do you plan to have? As a bee keeper myself, I will be real curious how that goes for you.
Us too! I feel like in the 3 years we had a garden in Oregon we did pretty well thanks to the soil and we were planning to get hives but truthfully I have been scared to start due to the issues I have read and heard about. I have done a great deal of research on bees in the area and people do overwinter them, I will be placing an order soon (local apiary) but not quite sure yet for how many. I am SO open to any advice and recommendations, I have this concept of treatment free beekeeping although I care about the bees survival and am interested in breeding so trying to stay practical as well.
@@SimpleLivingAlaska Good that you have done some research on the bees. So many don't and have very poor results. I will shoot ya an email later on it with some thoughts.
Thank you, I would appreciate that :)
Do you not worry about bears or other critters getting to the outdoor food. I was camping in Yosemite and a neighbor had a bear break into their car, tear up the back seat and get to the ice chest in the trunk. Then he used the car as a battering ram to open the ice chest. It wasn't pretty. Lol.
You should check out Boss of the Swamp his fridge in his off grid cabin...awesome.
Some one said something about using the bones for bone meal for the garden. You would grind them for the garden
You are right (living traditions mentioned that recently) we do in fact use bone meal for our garden. Maybe I will try boiling them again, I don't have a way to grind them at the moment.
The Boss of the Swamp is in New Hampshire now - he sold his New York property.
NH is The Best.. Shhhhh 🤫
How much bone broth do you give your dogs? Do you give them anything else at the same time?
chickens love bones...bust them into small bits and watch the chickens fight over it!!
How much are fruits / vegetables prices in Alaska ?
Hi Big_A, we have considered doing a video on this because most things are noticeably more costly to us however it does vary from store to store and definitely in small towns v big. If you are interested in moving here I can tell you wages seem to be proportionately higher :)
Looks great guys, lucky dogs for sure, Caddis is jealous. -A
Thank you, they are spoiled :D
Oh I bet the dogs love that.
Oh! Keep that scapula for hunting if it’s still hard.
Yeah we are very familiar with living out of ice chest. 👍
Great idea, thank you! Do you mean for moose hunting?
Yeah normally it’s a moose scapula but caribou will work to.
I
Could you build an outdoor grinding machine for the bones to compost them as tiny pieces?
Regarding the bones, what is bone meal used in gardens? Is it ground bones?
The dogs are saying...that's my mama making us goodies 😋😉
Burn your bones in woodstove. The ash can then go on gardens👼
Ok, have to ask...
Aren't you concerned with bears/wolves/foxes/etc. Breaking into the completely unsecured meat/broth stores? Or just attracting them...
JP Tuscon, AZ wolves and bears are not an issue in this area (they are out there and could be an issue), the occasional neighborhood dog or magpie has stopped by though.
Interesting...
After a year in Alaska have gone through a winner has your diet changed? I have watched most of your vids and it looks like you guy eat mostly vegetables not a typical Alaskan diet.
J'Rad Librando we usually eat anything we can get our hands on and with our large garden we usually have lots of veggies.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
🖤🖤🦄🦄
I know I'm late to party on this one and maybe someone has already made the suggestion but just incase - one of the blogs I read is by off-grid homesteader in northern Vermont, here is a link to his cold weather refrigerator. I thought it was ingenious maybe it's common knowledge. lazymillhillfarm.com/2014/04/30/one-of-these-days/
Christopher Vadnais very cool, right now we don't keep much in our ice chest "fridge" but that is a wonderful solution ☺
Nice
For what reason you cook a broth 4 days?
Mmmm bone broth.Very healthy for humans and dogs.
Don't animals get in the food outside like that?
Issac Newton we haven't had issues with that.
Why are some jars all liquid and some all meat?
Christian Rogers we were making broth so significant amounts of water was added to render the broth and what was left was meat and very soft bone so we have jars that vary.
Putting opened canned good in a canning jar, Great tip. Thanks for sharing.
We grew and canned these goods in Oregon, there was no need to change jars just left them in the original jars we canned them in :)
Why do the dogs get the broth and meat? Are they sled dogs?
Karen Rollins, we prefer to feed them food we can raise or harvest, our one dog Bandit is finicky sometimes as to what he likes raw so we cooked it and they seem to enjoy it very much. They are not sled dogs but I think decently active for their age.
We live in a tiny cabin in the woods of Missouri no running water compost toilet I’ll be canning for the first time this year it has definitely been a struggle I can’t imagine doing this in Alaska we have 5 dogs and they would love you 😊
What about the bears? Don`t they come to steal that meat?
tinge1954 we have not had problems with bears, they also were hibernating then.
@@SimpleLivingAlaska Sorry, my bad, I forgot that. What about the wolves and wolverines, also they have good smell for food?
We haven't had any animals except birds get into our meat stash.
