I just wanna say, putting the sauce and mixing it with the potatos like that makes a HUGE difference rather than just layering it, thank you for this tip!
I realize this is an older video. But I tried this recipe and it came out PERFECT! I love white cheddar cheese and will use this recipe over and over again! Thank you!!!
Came to this site to learn how to make this for Easter dinner! Just learning how to cook and was wondering the amount of ingredients are used in this video, everyone is thankful for the recipe and I’m excited to make it, just don’t want to mess it up, Thank you!
Kellie, thanks for this recipe. I prepared it Christmas Eve UNCOOKED.and refrigerated It overnight. The next morning it was a bit watery on top, maybe separated since I used 1 cup each fat free milk and cream. I stirred it all up and baked it. It worked great and was delicious. It was decadently thick. Next time I’ll use all milk for a less thick version.
Amazing! was a little worried the sauce was too thick, nope, came out creamy and moist with golden around the pan. Highly recommend it's our new go to.
OMG, I’ve been working too hard making this dish! I tried this recipe this week and it was great. My 6 year old autistic daughter even helped. It was so delicious with minimal effort. I will never go back to the old way again. The only thing I did differently was use shredded Gouda (I didn’t feel like going to the store)🤗
Family says these are the best scalloped potatoes I have ever made! Tasted amazing with the Easter ham! I doubled the recipe to use the 5lb bag of potatoes...I had to switch up the cheese based on what I had though.. so I used 2 cups shredded swiss, 1 cup fancy expensive swiss, 1 cup shredded medium cheddar. I also ran out of milk so 2 cups milk, one cup of heavy cream, one cup sour cream... I was really hoping they would be as good as the original recipe - and I stuck with the portions of cheese & dairy. THANKS for sharing this recipe!
@@delectableprovisions this was scalloped potatoes. It starts with a roux. Au gratin is started with heavy whipping cream. this from research I've done. Eagle eye of you to notice.
looks good! Making this weekend...it says it can be prepared in advanced, how far in advance and would you need to cool down the cream mixture before assembling?
This came out absolutely fantastic. Whole family loved it. Awesome recipe with very reasonable effort for the payoff. I made some minor modifications: two cloves garlic, an extra oz of butter, and some more salt. Came out really good, would definitely recommend.
Girl this looks good but give this a try. Use evaporated milk instead . Use atleast 2 long blocks of cheese (marble) add chopped green onions and basic seasonings like salt and pepper . Boil the potatoes ( until a little tender it will finish cook in the oven ) and dont cut them too thin. Layer it instead of mixing everything together . Start with the cheese sauce ( will be less thick but thats what u want as it will get thicker in the oven) top it off with the rest of sauce make sure everything is well covered . Bake at 350 until golden brown at the top. Let cool before serving or it will be a hot mess on your plate trust me!! This is what we call potato pie where i come from. ( we add more things to spice it up but i gave you the simple easy recipe . )
This looks great Killie, and pretty easy too, maybe even a tired old batch can do it? On my way to the kitchen now. Any reason none of the recipes I've seen call for any onion? seems like a natural to me.
I'm quite intrigued with the bechamel sauce. Will deffo try it next time. My previous attemps were tasty but sauce curdled/split making it not very attractive.
I think the foil helps to steam cook the potatoes for a while before it is taken off. That way, you don't need to parboil them first. It also stops the cheese from browning too much.
can I use full cream milk instead of low-fat milk? will that make a difference or no cus we don't have it in the fridge and I'm planning on making this for dinner later
Yes, you can definitely use cream and it will just be richer....actually better tasting than if you use low fat milk. I just try to cut the calories where I can but when I make this for holidays I always use cream.
I fixed this for Christmas and it's awesome. Someone asked you made this and I proudly said yes and told her about your video. Potatoes were perfect and so easy. Thanks again.
I want to try this but I don’t get the measurements.. how much is supposed to be a cup? In french recipes we have exact measurements in grammes or milliliters so I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️ How much is 5 cups of potatoes? 1 kg?
there's not really that much difference....I like to use cornstarch for gluten free recipes but flour works just as well. You will need to use a little more cornstarch than you would flour to thicken up the sauce.
What is ''kosher'' salt that makes it different to ordinary salt please. I've never seen it for sale - don't know if you can get it here unless it's possibly in specialist shops = so I'm wondering if it's vital to use this because it has a particular herb or something added (sort of like garlic, onion or celery salt) which is why you say to use it over normal salt.
Hey there! Not sure where you live, but in the US, the two main types of salt you see at the store are Kosher Salt and Iodized Table salt. Iodized salt is much finer and has a different flavor than Kosher salt, which is a larger salt crystal. I prefer Kosher Salt, but truly, any salt you have access to should work fine in this recipe- just maybe add slightly less than I recommend. You can always add more salt later, but you can't really take it out once it's in!
Side note: I ended up cooking like my parents. I eyeball everything and season to taste. I always for just the ingredients and process of preparation. Has served me well most of the time.🤣👍
@@TheSuburbanSoapbox Just getting back to my post. The potatoe with ground Turkey in it was delicious. A huge casserole pan almost finished in 1x sitting. Served 7 people. It definitely will but make sure to sauté the mushrooms first so they don't make it watery. Cooking them beforehand releases the moisture from the mushrooms.
I just wanna say, putting the sauce and mixing it with the potatos like that makes a HUGE difference rather than just layering it, thank you for this tip!
Thank you! It was created out of frustration for undercooked potatoes with a mix of overly sauced potatoes.
I do the same for my mac and cheese by mixing the sauce and noodles together.
Made this recipe with 4 large potatoes and it came out so well with plenty of leftovers. Made our Christmas feel a little more normal. Thank you! 😇

The fat free milk is the reason it separated and became watery. All milk may be a better swap but not fat free.

Fahrenheit
