More specifically you would have removed the shield after your first roll when you rolled 5 successes and dealt 3 damage on second combat roll you would have dealt your 4 successes directly to pirate and killed him
Could it be that you all forgot about your companions cause I’m level three and you’re level two at the same point. I have Jack Holden as an companion and so do you I believe. That means every time you gain power you get 1 more bonus on top, or am I mistaken?

Please note: one you deal 2 or more damage to a creature the shield token is removed. You would have done 4 damage and killed the pirate.
