  • A US town’s border with Mexico has become highly politicised as different measures have been used to try and prevent migrant crossings.
The dangerous Rio Grande River has seen thousands of migrants attempt to get across it to reach Eagle Pass in Texas.
BBC Newsnight’s David Grossman has followed their journey and spoken to locals in Eagle Pass about how the community feels about the crossings.

Come in through the proper channels or get sent back to your country of origin. If that doesn't work, impose a fine for the trip back, payable by cash or goods.
In the states, if a bartender over-serves a customer and they eat pavement, the bartender themself can have a house, vehicle or other personal property seized to pay for the medical bills. Why should deportation costs be paid for by taxes?

the US is such an immensly rich nation build on the backs of migrants.
the fact it can't deal with the migrants from the south is crazy.
I mean poland, which has like 38 million citizens, has nearly 15 million ukranian refugees living there now and it works.

@@underarmbowlingincidentof1981 It's not just migrants from the south. It's migrants from anywhere. The concentrate in communities that are already struggling and make the economics of the area even worse. Also, they've proven they don't really care about following the laws of this nation so why the hell would we want a spike in petty crime or worse once they find somewhere to hold up inside the boarders? Ukrainian refugees are all documented with registered status and many of them have started working and paying taxes within their host country. These boarder jumpers are unregistered and just looking for handouts from a system they don't and have never contributed to. It's simply not sustainable.

Here is a thought, go after the American employers of these people, they come because they get work, often in cash so not traceable, I support heavy fines for hiring people without documents.

I lived in Texas, El Paso to be exact, in 1978-80
Emergency alerts would come on tv and radio asking for all available people to go to the river to assist in rescuing people attempting to cross the river.
A lot has changed in process but people have always crossed however they could
It is unfortunate that some lose their life
I’m not saying people shouldn’t enter the US; I am saying that proper entry/process channels should be used as ancestors of American residents did
There are many countries with people in need of “asylum” (not criminals or terrorists) but the US is only so big as is the UK with same issues
Without going through proper channels these people can not be vetted
There is no easy solution to the global issue

I crossed the river without trouble when I visited Big Bend. So much water is taken out of the Rio Grande in NM that for most of the year crossing it is trivial. The dramatic segment where the BBC talked about how so many don't make it only to cut to the fire chief of Eagle Pass saying maybe 2 calls per week average and mostly not drowning when there are 250,000 crossing per month was pretty weak journalism. The razor wire is super messed up, though.

Nothing will deter a person fleeing from persecution, hunger, and violence. As an American, I think our government should help these people assimilate into society. They and their children will become an asset in the long term.

There is nothing in South America that people need asylum from. They need to fix their country’s and bad governance! My sympathy runs low. No skills, no job, no money, just very needy immigrants that act like they are owed something once they get here. What the hell do they expect?

There may be a noisy outcry to close the border, but the smart money is on continued unchecked emigration because the US needs the cheap labor, and the need is only growing. President Biden courts the labor unions so he cannot appear to ease legal avenues to emigration. Texas Governor Abbot takes measures which are vicious but only serve to injure people who have already endured epic and arduous journeys far more difficult than a few yards of razor wire will stop . Abbot knows that American corporations need the workers and Texas taxpayers are helping distribute them throughout the country. It's the New Underground Railroad.
