Flight Sergeant George Rogers was born in Dover on September 26th, 1921. In March of 1940 he enlisted in the RAF, and was sent overseas to fly in France with the BEF. He had only been flying for a month when the BEF retreated to England from Dunkirk, where he resumed flying Hurricanes with 111 squadron, from Hawkinge airfield. On the morning of August 13th, 1940, "Eagle Day", 111 Squadron was scrambled to meet an enemy raid on the airfield. Flt. Tom Parr recalled Roger's heroics:
"At 0654 we spotted the enemy formation and commenced our attack. George made a pass on a 111 and damaged it, then turned and dove upon another, flaming it's no. 1 engine and setting the starboard wing tank alight. Chutes were observed from the aircraft. George called out that he'd been hit, but despite his wounds still circled back, setting alight a 111's No. 2 engine. Chutes were observed as the aircraft fell. Following a call from Thomson, Rogers turned and engaged two 109s, missing one then turning to his wingman. He recalled flashes around the cockpit and the canopy shattering, the enemy aircraft falling away with no chute observed. Rogers proceeded to severely damage another 109, then disengaged having run out of ammunition. On his way back to base, a 109 picked him up, settling on his six and tearing into the already scarred Hurricane. The German pilot disengaged quickly though, likely due to lack of ammo or fuel."
Rogers landed at Hawkinge, his plane full of holes. Corporal Harry Granger, Rogers' mechanic stated "If the bаstard 'ad 'ad an ounce of sense in 'im, he'd 'ave put er down in the channel and swum 'ome. Look at 'er!! Jerry shot 'im 'alf to 'ell, eh? Would've been a right shame"
The Heinkel Rogers had damaged crash landed over Britain, and the pilot of the damaged 109 was seen bailing over the channel, making Rogers an ace in a day. He was awarded the victoria's cross by Churchill himself, and after recovering from his wounds he returned to service, and flew spitfires with No. 19 squadron, racking up three more 109s before he was shot down by anti aircraft fire over France in July 1943. He managed to evade capture and return to his squadron, where he scored two more FW-190s, finishing the war as a major with a total of 10 kills, an ace twice over, along with a BF-109 over the channel that was considered a probable. He received the Victoria's Cross, the Queen's Commendation for Bravery in the Air, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired from the RAF as a colonel in 1985, having flown Meteors and Hunters before working a desk job at Hawkinge. He passed away in his childhood home in Dover at age 87, the beautiful skies above the channel his last view

Up until you mentioned that he retired as a major, this made excellent sense and a good movie to me.
RAF pilots used another rank system, to end the war as a major, and retire as a colonel, he would have to be re-mustered into an Army.
There's a possibility he did so, but a much-decorated Flight Sergeant who survived the war having been 'made up' into an officer, then retained after peace broke out, would more likely have retired as a Squadron Leader or Group Captain.
Also, sub-divisions of an RAF Squadron are 'flights', made up of 'sections', usually of three aircraft as you show, not groups.
Each flight tends to called red, white, blue or yellow flight, and these were sometimes 'budded off' to make the kernel of a new squadron.
A 'group' is a much larger formation of several squadrons, sometimes dozens, with a Command such as Fighter Command, Bomber Command or Anti-Aircraft Command.
Ranks: Recruit, Airman, Leading Airman, Senior Airman, Corporal, Sergeant, Flight Sergeant, Warrant Officer, Pilot Officer, Flying Officer, Flight Lieutenant, Squadron leader, Group Captain, then the non-flying ranks.
Units: Section, Flight, Squadron, Wing, Group, Command, Air Force, Air Forces.

Hurricanes were designed by Sydney Camm who had them covered with fabric instead of metal like the Spitfire...because coming out of post WW1 almost all aircraft were fabric covered so there was a large supply of skilled workers who knew how to repair the fabric for an aircraft...it also meant that they didn't need new equipment to fix the aircraft...so a lot of Hurricanes that had giant holes blown in the fabric were repaired in the squadron workshops and flying the next day.

The Hawker Hurricane is a major development of the earlier Hawker Fury biplane.
The structure of the rear fuselage was very similar, a series of wooden frames and stringers with Irish linen covering, over a metal tube structure.
After the Hurricane Mk.I, the wings were made with metal skins, and later Hawker planes such as the Typhoon, Tornado, Tempest, Sea Fury were developed alongside each other from the beginning of WWI and became increasingly more metal-structured.
If you look into the cockpit of any of these aircraft, they will look similar in the built-up from tubes construction.
The Hurricane has a sister aircraft the Hawker Henley, meant to be a fast bomber with an internal bomb-bay. Worth looking up.

Yellow distinctions first appeared on German aircraft during the Battle of Britain, as did mottled camouflage on the sides of the Bf-109s.
Unofficial at first, they became official later.
Red was used in ground-attack squadrons.
Even the Italians used yellow when in France or over Britain.
These later became the yellow, or sometimes red for ground attack units, undersides of engines or wingtips used to distinguish the Axis and their allies during the campaign in Russia. Italian, Romanian and other's planes had yellow noses and wingtips as well. It can even be found on Finnish 'planes.
White was used in a similar manner on Germany and it's allies' planes in the Mediterranean and African theatres.
Britain used a yellow stripe along the leading edge of their fighter's wings, and a 'sky' coloured propeller hub and band around the rear fuselage, in front of the tail, official in December of 1940.
By June 1944 this had become a black and white striped pattern (the Normandy landings), then was limited to white lines from front to rear of the fighter's wings and often the tailplanes, often seen on US camouflaged Thunderbolts. Sometimes the natural metal, un-camouflaged fighters such as the P-51 had black stripes in a similar manner.

I’m not sure whether in reality, a wounded Hurricane pilot would willingly engage in high-G combat with Bf 109s. Being wounded makes passing out from high-G turns much more likely. It’s far more likely that he would continue attacking the bombers, or head for home.
In any case, in the historical Battle of Britain, attacking the German bombers was always the RAF’s top priority, regardless of their fighter escort. Dogfighting 109s was only done in self defence.
