The idea of feeling unready to truly live life hits home.
Here's my journal entry from a few weeks ago:
"i feel like i'm stuck in a permanent state of temporary.
i keep telling myself: these people are temporary. this job is temporary. i'll aim higher.
but... i have no deadlines. it's permanently temporary."

    • @addisonsmith9688
      @addisonsmith9688 6 месяцев назад +6

That's a bleak but accurate description of life itself. *Permanently temporary.*
      Don't feel bad.
Try to find a lifelong career that feels rewarding enough to allow you to want to wake up every morning and do it.
      Set some goals for yourself.
Like Jordan Peterson teaches, start with the small and work up to the grand. Clean your room, then your house, then your community.. then run for Congress if you've gotten that far

Sounds like you don't like your job. Have you tried Jordan Petersons Self Authoring Program? It helps SO much! It's only about $10. It brings you thru a series of questions about your past, present & future to help you set achievable goals, which can change over time, as needed.

I have been in the "lonely chapter" and the "on the grind" for so long now that I have forgotten how to live and enjoy life. I even forgot how to talk with my friends because I can't imagine them understanding the challenges that I face and find that I am not able to express my thoughts anymore. Thanks for this talk, because that is how it feels watching this video, like a deep and meaningful conversation with a wise and old friend. Thanks for giving me the talk. I needed to realize life is happening now. Ps you should consider writing a book Chris, I think you can really help people with your wisdom.

He meant that some people raise the productivity bar very high to feel that they are worthy of being alive. These people tend to increase their efficiency rather than relax and have a quiet time with friends and family because when they do the latter they think they are wasting time and feel the guilt of not being productive (not doing enough).

These small ideas add up to something great.
It's amazing to have you dissect these thoughts and hold them up to your life struggles... Which are very similar to my life struggles... Even though we are quite different people...
It's like constant life hacks, but thought hacks instead.
I think there for I am. I am better and happier because of the practical clarity you bring to these important ideas...
This channel is a safe anchorage from the troubled waters of a turbulent mind. Somewhere to rest and regain strength.
I've only been subscribed to this channel a couple of months, but it's had a profound affect on my happiness and well being.
It's 6am on a Sunday morning and everyone in the house is still asleep. I'm going to spend the day with the family today... Go to the beach maybe... Even though the weather isn't perfect. I may take that fishing rod i bought last year...
Enjoy your weekend man. Thanks for everything!

I usually just listen on Spotify but switched over to RUclips for this one because I felt it might hit better watching it.
From listening to previous milestone episodes, I know they're always heartfelt and give a great summary of some of the key points from the previous bunch of episodes and how you've internalized them. I'm sure many of us have picked up on the subtle tells that suggest you may be feeling the pressure and are having quite the internal conversation at the moment.
If that is the case, I wanted to try and let you know that, to most of us, it looks like you're doing a cracking job, mate.
Embracing the madness of it all and seeing that the madness is, in fact, a large part of why it's so beautiful. The work you put in to bring us these conversations and insights is truly appreciated. When gratefulness came up in the episode, I couldn't help but think I'm grateful there's a bro out there dedicating his time to this pursuit, so that I can have a reflective internal moment listening to his conversation and applying the wisdom as best I can in my own life. Never really got into posting comments on videos, so this might be a weird one, but sod it, here I am doing the thing, saying hello to the random stranger on the train. Cheers mate, big love, stay strong

I normally like these episodes of yours, but this one was truly wonderful! It spoke to me so much that I went from tearing up and feeling set free from the burdens I place upon myself, to feeling enlightened with new wonderful insights I never considered before, to bursting out laughing at the satire on a topic I've observed too, then back to feeling like you're speaking directly to me because you address the very things I am currently struggling with, then giggling as you point out exactly the silly thing I've found myself doing recently, then back to tearing up as you give me the permission I've struggled to give myself to stop taking things so seriously and just enjoy life, and then again as you say "this challenge that you are going through is a gift to your future self." Watching this really made my day! Thank you

I wish you the best in getting through this bottleneck. Please remember that it's just a narrow passage to squeeze through all the big potential bursting out of you right now. It's a snug fit in the process, but out the other side a big world awaits to receive what you have to offer.
If you're open to some unsolicited advice...perhaps finding friends, mentors and even proteges of different ages would provide you with some space to unfurl and sort out more of who you are as you push through these growing pains.
Whatever you do, press on. You've got this 💪😊🙌

On the topic in the 20 minute window - if the general guidance is that you should put away 15% of your income for retirement, why shouldn't that apply to your personal time? If you can put 15% of your income aside for future you, then you can put aside 15% of your current time for future you's happiness. That ends up being 3.5 hours a day. Find away to enrich your personal human savings rather than just your investment accounts.

Chris, I love the podcast and the amazing guests you get. I have to tell you, this one was tough to listen to. It made me want to yell at my speakers. So much of what you're wrestling with regarding meaning and purpose has a very simple (if challenging) answer. Find a good sensible woman, marry her, and have children. Throw yourself entirely into being the best husband and father you can be. I've had tremendous professional success in my life, and it in no way will ever come close to raising a family in terms of challenge, meaning, and satisfaction. My wife and I will celebrate 33 years together, and I am so grateful for her and the children she has given me. I'm pretty confident I will be remembered 3 generations from now. Cheers!

This is amazing! I love this. I kinda wish whenever you read a passage or defined terms you would put the words on the screen.

@chris, I think another way to look at “shadow sentences” comes from Edward Hall on direct/indirect communication styles, which varies depending on culture. For example, in many East Asian countries, there is a greater desire for harmony and “saving face”, so a lot of requests are made very indirectly. Exactly, because as you note, making a direct request can put one in a vulnerable position, and turning down a direct request can be uncomfortable or embarrassing for both parties. I think there are advantages to more direct and explicit communication, as you note, but it does depend on the culture and context.

FWIW your videos are so inspiring and I really like the questions ones. From someone who has tried so hard at things in life to have everything fail, I wish I could have heard all these casts when I was younger to maybe have done something with my degree and my life. I know young people are so F'ing dumb, just like we were.... but man I hope your videos reach people to make adifference in their lives and the future of people. You seem to work so tirelessly and for nothing other than this, thank you so much Chris.

The curse of competence and/or the curse of the creative.
I find myself never completing projects because I constantly switch between them since I enjoy anything creative. Yes, I could definitely take many paths, but focusing on one is definitely a challenge. I wish someone would just tell me my path and what I’d be best at so I could then *try* to focus on making that passion, project, or ambition my primary focus. At this point, I’ll try to take the advice from this video and focus on something for a period of time before changing projects.

The problem with being good at everything is something i suffer from. I never thought that this was happening with a lot of people. I feel like i love science and physics,i love mathematics ,i love medicine and the way human body is studied and healed, i love economy and auditing ( wich i am pursuing ), and i am good at all of them.i feel like i need to live like 5 times to satisfy the fields that i like and at the same time i dont know wether i am choosing the best option or not, always wondering if i am missing out on other opportunities if i would be better or happier if i chose to be an entrepreneur or pursue another carrier. But at least i am not the only one. Wich you all the best everyone and thank you for your video sir
