what's confusing, is "the united way" is open to degrees of variation. I'm 38 and saw SAF build probably 3 teams, all of which played differently, as both the game evolved and players became more technical. A lot of the first 10 years was 4-4-2, with a bit of 4-4-1-1 once Cantona joined, then variations of 4-3-3 throughout the later years. We often played long, direct, and via the channels early, with wingers who'd cross it early. Then we evolved to play shorter and with more control, after he brough Carlos and Rene in as coaches.
The united way, isn't about tactics and systems, so much as it's about never giving up, getting after teams, when one's in a scrap, they're all in a scrap, scoring lots of goals, scoring late goals, scoring wonderful goals. Getting in behind, putting teams on the wrack and sustaining attacks. Suffocating teams into submission, and putting fear into teams.

100% because he relied on the Ajax style that has been embedded for over a century. He himself has no ideas. If he had his own ideas he would’ve stuck to them. He was lucky to have a good crop of Ajax players that were way better than anyone else in the dutch league.

@thebizness5596 complete nonsense. Ten Hag's was actually a departure from the age-old Ajax style and relied much more on overloads, pressing and transitions. The idea that he could achieve anything in the pl by playing exactly like Ajax is quite silly

It's a shame that successive managers could not find a way to work with him. A mixture of not being able to implement his style because of the players. A bad second season recruitment wise compounded that with hideous injuries. A fog of war situation led to bagel FC where we couldn't play a connected press because our back line was too slow. Mason Mount being perma-injured as I think he was supposed to be our 8. Then cultural reset at the club impacting and new players bedding in all conspired against Eric. I think he was a very unlucky manager, but, you can't overlook the start to the season and he absolutely was backed.

Why did ten hag not to try his ajax philosophy at united still baffles me. He quit after the 2nd game and for the rest of the season played counterattack because he knew he couldn't sell all the players he needee and didnt have time. Then the next 2 yrs tried this high press transitional play which he never did before at any other club. He was simply experimenting. But why didnt he try play the ajax possession style when ineos were backing him and buying his ajax players. His own stubborness caused his sack. Majority of united fans still backed him cuz we saw we were dominating games and creating chances, the players just couldn't score.

    • @steve13191

He did. But realized that it’s not the dutch league and everyone is just better tactically and PHYSICALLY. He used to leave lisandro and timber two on two. He found out vs brentford and brighton english teams hit you on the counter with pace and quality. Then after city 6-3 game he started transition towards counter/direct, also how carabao cup was won. Direct. When he doubled down on transition his whole game fell apart. That and all the rubbish players he brought in

My biggest problem with Ten Hag was that as soon as our keeper has the ball the fullbacks push up to the halfway line. So whenever we lose the ball in midfield it was so easy for the other team to attack us through the middle or behind the fullbacks.

Can all get up there with a tactics board and say what someone should be doing. See this a lot from Fergies former backroom staff, Rene, Phelan etc going on the radio claiming they were 'basically managing day to day'. How did they get on as a #1 when they had to make all the decisions? Shite.
Totally different ball game when you're the actual manager making all the decisions. Sure Ten Hag made plenty of mistakes but try this with the Man Utd squad Rene. Explain what you want them to do just like this, where do you cover on the board when they start passing the ball to the opposition, shooting from all over the place, collapse mentally.
Man Utd are failing for longer than Ten Hag has been there.

Ten Hag continued to play out of form players like Rashford and Bruno week in week out. Also his signings have been poor. 90 million for Antony and 110 million spent on Hojlund and Zirkzee for a total of two goals.

Why United is not trying a back 3 I cannot understand. We have so many centrebacks right now, and even if you don't count the average ones, there is still Martinez, de Ligt (I expect him to find his feet and come good in the EPL over the next 6 mths), and Leny Yoro coming up after recovering from injury. All 3 of them have to play regularly for their own redevelopment and for United's long-term benefit. Plus, a back 3 solves a lot of the current issues. And a front 2 should not be a problem for us cos Garnacho, Rashford, Diallo, Zirkzee are all very mobile and can switch between central and both wings. Hojlund can stay in the centre while his partner, one of those 4, will move around, creating space for the wingbacks, pulling defenders away etc.
With a back 3, if you want to play defensively, midfield will be a triangle with 2 pivots. If you want to play attacking, invert the triangle and play only 1 pivot. And if you really want to go for it, push one of the CB into midfield in a 1-1-2. Ultra defensive? Midfield triangle becomes a flat-3 or just move the triangle a bit deeper. It's versatile and easy to understand for the players.

one thing is to have 2 or 3 guys always playing 80% of games in pre-defined positions when they come in than whatever was happening with ten hag. think of liverpool for example, VVD, Konaté and TAA are part of the back 4, Robertson isn't fit nor in a good level by now so he's being subbed on and off byTsimikas and when TAA isn't fit Bradley plays but that's it, maybe a game where Quansah comes in but you more or less have the same 3 or 4 guys playing.

The main problem with Ten Hang is that he didn't bring out the best in his players because he is too regid. Ole's team was a lot more flexible, and they individually performed better even if they had a bit less quality (or were already too old). Pogba was having one of his best form playing even though his head was already out of the club, and that was because he finally got some freedom and flexibility to his game.
It is Man Utd's DNA to allow players express themselves, Ole is the only manager that has allowed this so far since Fergie, little wonder then that his team has been the most entertaining. I wish we can get a similar Manager with a lot more tactical acumen - like Carlo Ancelloti or Zidane.

None of this is rocket science. You have a style of play and you tell the players what that is. You work on it in training, till it becomes second nature. If your players don't do what you want or are incapable, you drop them and bring in someone else. Let's not over-complicate this. It's football. If Rashford's job includes helping out defensively and he doesn't do that, bench him or sell him. I played at Amateur level and as much as I found this interesting, I've learned nothing new from this analysis from Meulensteen.
We need to find a fit left back and right winger and it's clear that neither Casemiro or Erikson are good enough off the ball, so long as we're outnumbered in midfield. Ugarte and Mainoo are the future in the engine room!
