With me not being christian, I interpret this song in a different way. That doesn't mean it has less meaning for me or anyone else. It's just a very beautiful song.
I am not sure if I am a Christian or not. If the definition is Christ-like lifestyle (as so many televangelist memetically repeat in sermons), I certainly am not. Still, I grew up quite religious, and these songs still make me feel some sense of comfort.
being Christian simply means believing that Christ died for your sins and there's nothing you can do to earn a salvation except as to accept the gift of Christ :) and, what follows when He changes your heart through faith, your deeds and lifestyle changes. :)
That's the great thing about truly amazing music. It normally does have an intended meaning, but like any art it speaks to each interpreter differently on a very deep, personal level.

However, every member of the band is a professing Christian and is open about where their songs come from... their faith. I respect them so much because they aren't pushing their beliefs and are allowing everyone to interpret the meaning themselves. I can enjoy a song about love even if they wrote it about god's love...they don't say that in the song and so i can say it's a song about how i love my kids, etc. :)

I'm an agnostic and I love Switchfoot . they have been an integral part of my life for 6-7 years now . I hope you guys understand that different songs hold different meanings to different people . I love that the band makes it clear that their songs are for everyone . There songs are put out there, open to interpretation in whichever way the listener finds comfort in them . I find it confusing that if the band is tolerant why some fans can't be .

I didn't even know Switchfoot was a Christian band, and I don't care about any labels on any bands. This song is extremely beautiful and powerful. I literally feel love flow through me in the choruses. Thankyou for that Switchfoot.

For anyone who doesn't know, switchfoot is a term for using your non dominants side while skating or surfing (right handed people lead with their left foot, and left handed people lead with their right foot.. switchfoot means you practice your weak side, to become capable of either).
If you don't know a SoCal beach on a sunny day in January, please experience it. And don't just look at the ocean... go into it (but be safe and understand rips currents.. they're easy if you understand them, don't ever panic, swim parallel to shore, it's over in 60 seconds). A long time ago, I heard music while lying in bed. Shofar music. Nothing anyone near me would ever play. At around 3 AM. It kept going for an hour as I laid there.
