    Finding the top things to do in a city can be a challenge, in large cities across Poland like Gdansk it can be difficult to filter out all of the must see suggestions you read online or pamphlets. With our trop to Gdańsk City we decided to ask you guys for some things to do!
    Poland itself has been amazing, but we wanted to travel a bit further and visit some spots we might not otherwise see in a typical city guide or on RUclips already.
    Fortunately for us, Polska was playing in the football world cup so we ended up going super local and creating an afternoon of our own favourite things to do!... or drink, in Poland.

    Before WW2 Zaspa was an airport. That is why you can find flat hardgrounded spaces there. After the War communist authorities decided to build a huge complex of apartment blocks in the type you can find all over east-central Europe and Russia.

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  6 лет назад +3

      That explains a LOT! Thank you for that info.

    • @adamwnt
      @adamwnt 4 года назад

      Exactly and just to add some more infos the new airport was built outside the city while these blocks were all grey and tedious in the past, hence after the collapse of communism they were all decorated to give some vibe to the area. This is the neighbourhood I grew up in.

    About that apple juice chaser thing - honestly in Poland everything can be a chaser as long as it's not alcoholic, whatever works for you. Some people even chase with water.

      No Olga.
      It was Gdańsk Airport open to civilian traffic, before it was moved to Rębiechowo in early 70-ies and Zaspa was built.
      John Paul II Street is an old runway.
      I know. I virtually grew up there.
      Greetings from Canada!

    Yes to these local tips videos - especially when they are "helped along" by good local beer :) Visiting a local bar like you did here shows more about the spirit and reality of the place you are visiting than ever a staged tourist location can. The tourists sites are fine but to get under the skin of the place, you have to do what you guys did in this video. Loved it!

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  6 лет назад +1

      100% agree Rex, see we actually needed you to explain it - you did a better job than us haha. The staged element and getting under the skin of a place is right on point.

    you have accidentally found the worst local in the area :D
    1. WWII museum highly recommended - much better then may sound
    2. Oliva cathedral is overrated, typical "tourist attraction" (tho the surroundings looks amazing during autumn)
    3. You have to check out Sopot, you will get there by the same city train. Check the recommended locals at monte cassino street - ends by long wooden pier

    • @DanegerAndStacey

      Always the risk when you go a bit toooo local huh! We're generally really cautious, not because we can't handle ourselves or don't have the street smarts, but the expensive camera we carry around is a walking target and gives us away! Hope you enjoyed this one though, a little different and fun.

    On a different note: I gather you guys are walkers, but maybe if you like biking and are planning to bounce between some other cities in Poland it'd do you good to register for the city bike system? It's quite cheap. I know there is one in Warsaw (it's called Veturilo), Łódź, Wrocław, Białystok, Częstochowa, Poznań and a bunch of other cities. It's the same corporation (nextbike I think) so you can use them from one account. If you're into in of course. Best

Seeing some places I know very well + some others that I plan to see in the future (and probably should have seen a long time ago but I usually visit Kraków or Gdańsk when I go to concerts so there's not really a lot of time to just walk around those cities with a camera). i'll be sure to catch up with some older ones from other countries :)

    I love Your style of travelling. On the other hand it's cool to see my town (Kraków) from another, so refreshing point of view. Maybe You should wishit Łódź next time. Seems to be boring, but have some very catchy locations like Rosa's Passage.

    Used to live there, my in-laws still live there.
    This place used to be an airfield and the airport for Gdańsk.
    Then they built a new airport outside the city, and built a huge living area on the airfield.
    Around 26,000 people live there.
    This was the communist era "big plate" building method.
    They premanufactured these huge block elements of the buildings, and then just assembled them on the spot. They looked terrible, they used to be raw, unpainted, uninsulated cement blocks.

    If you will visit Katowice, I invite you for a tour in Zagłębie Palace of Culture in Dąbrowa Górnicza (next to the Katowice). There are also a beautiful beaches almost in the center of the city and I know an excellent restaurant in Sosnowiec.

    Do you know Gdańsk was an independent city state before WW2?

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  6 лет назад +1

      Noooope! We didnt know that. Youre full of details :)

    • @Camel9991
      @Camel9991 6 лет назад

      Yep. Mostly inhabited by Germans (~90%) who sadly voted for German nazi party and the state was incorporared into Germany in 1939 and that is why Russian Soviets treated it as German city and destroyed huge part of the city in 1945 and gave it to Poland. Btw Gdańsk was Slavic, Polish formally in Medieval times and then in period of 1466-1795 buy till 1945 most of the pop was Germanic (Germans and Dutch ppl).

    • @noodleppoodle

      Ok some more history. The reason Germans were here in the first place (and the Polish and German elements were mixing here so much) was the fact that around 1223 Polish king Konrad of Masovia invited German Teutonic Knights to fight pagans, who ventured out from what is today Lithuania, and were bothering his state. The Teutons, however, soon created their own state, started German settlement in the area, becoming a new headache for the Polish rulers instead of the old pagan one. At various points in time the area where Gdansk is was a German-speaking part of the Polish Crown. Fast forward, the city was also an excuse to start WW2. If you fancy some local-related reading with the Polish-German-Kashubian mixture try Guenther Grass "Tin Drum".

      Very grateful for this --- we're off back to Gdansk in 4 days and I love to have a 'local' book to read on holiday. - My hope is to see the Stutthof Museum - if D&S get to visit there first I won't be upset (..... Hint hint !!) - however I think it's going to be almost 20 miles outside the city but I'm sure we can manage the buses - plus if the northern route is used you get to use the ferry across the Vistula - an event in it's own right.
