- Sometimes we don't talk about things because we're just used to them, but for many new players, this is a massive barrier to entry! This is a problem mostly invisible to players like us, but I know from experience that newer players absolutely suffer here, and that hurts WoW long term.

The interact key and action camera has changed how Wow feels to me, and I absolutely love it, throw in improved combat UI and enemy animations and stuff? it would utterly transform the experience that is playing this game, for the better.
They certainly have the man power to do that now.
Is the action cam back? I thought they got rid of it.
@@nathans9764 I meant action targeting ,whoopsie, Dynamic-cam is an addon though that takes advantage of the action camera if you want an over-the-shoulder camera.
@@datlobstaguygenius1792 oh yeah, I've been fiddling with the new targeting and auto mouse over stuff, it's much better than before. I just wish you could select to auto mouse over help spells but not harm spells. Should help clear out my macros though, since most of them are healing macros.
@@nathans9764 I'm a tank main tbh, don't know anything about healing, but combat over all just feels far more engaging with the action targeting I feel, need to try out hunter, I imagine that feels pretty cool with it.
I've personally got tired of addons for all sorts of reasons, and have taken up the challenge idea that I got from Matt in one of the streams of going into Dragonflight with a "No Addons" challenge. Going to try and attempt to keep a log of various things and notes to compile and possibly give to the Feedback sub.
If you want a challenge, try healing using Blizzard's basic party frame. Good god is it terrible. You cant see who has your HoTs and buffs.
Yes you can see all hots and debuffs on vanilla frames
I get shit for it, but I use the bare minimum. I disliked the bugs with action bar addons, and didn't feel like setting them up. I have been using no addons except Dps meters, and Dbm. If something was required by a guild I would use, it, but didn't really see a purpose, because relearning the muscle memory after years of play seemed counter intuitive.
@@Misspickless Resto druid here.
You just can't see them all

There's another reason button glows don't always work as well: I think my Outlaw has like three different procs that make Pistol Shot glow, and it doesn't make it easy to see if it's glowing because I've got a 200% damage buff or if I've got an Opportunity, and I don't want to actually fire until Opportunity is up. Luckily I've got a WeakAura set up to make sure things are more clear (complete with a classic "shotgun reload" sound when Opportunity is up), but it would definitely be easier if information was conveyed better by default.
That's what wow could do by default; add sound effects for different procs. Though it would need to be customizable, and I guess people already do that with WA anyway.
I cannot physically imagine how WoW would be without Wowhead
Better.
Without them, as Bell said "doing their job for them" Blizzard would have had to remedy the difficulties on their own over time.
@@decwow But... the whole point is that they DIDN'T do that, which is why Thottbot and WoWhead became a thing... lol
Blizzard refused to do their job back then, and still refuse to do it right now.

Luxthos makes the best WAs imo. He streams on twitch as well!
Honestly I wouldn't have beared WoW's Combat UX design after playing FFXIV/GW2 if it wasn't for Luxthos WAs. Simply a must have.
Hopefully this is the kind of thing they'll have in mind as they continue to build out the new UI system!
Let us hope for that.
yeah, i basically learned how to make weak auras for myself because i needed very custom information in varied game types, like random battlegrounds, arena, pvp and pve in general, quality of life, loooots of stuff that you can do with a good coded weak aura
I think the biggest contributor to this issue is their obsession with procs, buffs and resets. This didn't happen as much pre wrath and it was a lot easier to know what you were doing
Bro the entire point of the video is the issues with tracking of procs buffs and resets......of course the main contributor to that is procs buffs and resets.....
They like it so much that they made enh shaman all around random shit lol
UI/UX is always very in demand these days guys, definitely something to consider as a career option
Since I don't do dungeons or raids, I find the center stuff annoying if you're just a casual player. I'm glad that they've decided that the players have the control over it.
My UI has all my info central when I need it (in combat) but out of combat it all fades away to hide just about everything except the minimap
I'm also a very casual player but I use weakauras, bartender etc with everything centered. They disappear when I'm out of combat. Otherwise it's very hard to keep track of stuff.
One of the things I miss from FFXIV having gotten back into WoW in preparation for Dragonflight is the enemy list, which shows you every enemy that you've engaged in a given pull. It lets you clearly see the names, health and (I believe) cast bars of mobs you're fighting and gives you an easy way to prioritize targeting beyond tab spamming or trying to click on an enemy or cast bar in a sea of mobs and party members.
Another thing I wish Blizz would implement (somewhat borrowing from FF again) is a "simplified" nameplate where you just have a basic HP bar and resource bar instead of the unwieldy portrait it has. You can get around this with basic weakauras, but still would be nice. Setting up a generic resource bar that would be used to track mana/rage/energy/whatever across all your characters would be much more useful than having individual weakauras for all the different resources the classes use.
I don't think this is so much iterative as it is completely torn apart and bolted back together every expansion. If they were just iterating, they wouldn't need to completely rebuild every single class and spec constantly. The classes would steadily improve over time to a point of reaching the desired look, feel, and balance.
on the subject of better visibility for boss mechanics, for the love of god blizzard let us customize the colors! sometimes it is hard to see the mechanics without dbm when the spell effect clashes with the floor/environment color, specially for us people with sight problems - like just look at anduin's fight. no more grey over slightly different grey again
The way you explained inconsistency with the frost mage makes too much sense! How did I not have a problem with this so far?! I even used custom weakauras in raiding amd not realised this problem….. fck I’m dumb!
nah ur not dumb and we all should learn from eachoter
@@tonykeer I just logged out and I payed more attention to this while playing. I’m currently leveling a blood dk and I have so many spells, especially defensive cooldowns and I really do just stare at my action bar most of the time even tho the damaging rotation of the blood dk is vers simple (it’s lvl 48 so it won’t get much more complicated)
and finally fix the sizing options on the minimap
Agree..I'm gonna still use sexy map atm
I play with original UI, only using addons for DPS meters and little more, and I liked it then and I like it now. I think it's pretty simple and direct. I guess people who are used to have it hugely altered don't feel the same way, but for me, as a player who always used the original one, I did not have any major issues
This is vastly different depending on the class/spec you play, and depending on the talents you choose. Specs and talent builds that mostly rely on cooldowns have it so much easier. Game really needs better buff/debuff tracking
We don't want to make the game simple to make the game easier? I find this statement a bit odd. You know why auto-combat games on phones are so popular? I would argue to say people enjoy easy. Is WoW difficult? For the sweaty try hards who will undoubtedly respond to my comment, WoW is easy. Is it actually though? Not really. Especially for newer players. It's an information overload.
What would also help is teaching players how to play their specs IN-GAME.
Why not give players that are new to s spec a quest or a few quests that have them go to their class trainer and actually learn stuff like “keep this buff up at all times” or “use this ability as your filler in AoE instead of the usual ability”
Make class trainers actually relevant again and more useful than they ever have been. Actual trainers.
Because nowadays you can look it all up that’s why it’s not in the game + the more spec specific stuff doesn’t really come into play until you hit endgame
@@JamailvanWestering Oh really? Wow! I didn’t know that! Crazy!
No sht dumbazz. But players shouldn’t need to rely on 3rd party outside sources to learn their spec.

Some of us need TRAINING WHEELS for some of these AddOns. Right before Shadowlands came out, a very helpful fellow hunter in a dungeon took some time to talk to me about my talents and setup. He insisted I needed weak auras and plater. I did go download them. But when I went to use them, I found there was of course some setting up required. It was so confusing and complicated. I tried to find RUclips tutorials. Those seemed just as complicated and confusing as the damn AddOns themselves. In my frustration, I finally threw my hands up and said fk it, whatever. I KNOW this has hurt my gameplay and has placed me solidly in the “casual gamer” grouping for years. For some of us, less is more. I can’t parse through all the options available with an untrained eye. Even choosing a preset weak auras for hunters was not helpful because I STILL couldn’t figure out how the fk to apply it! I’d love to be a more competitive player, but I don’t think I can do that without helpful AddOns.
I do agree, some classes I didn’t like and I found out it was because of the visual clutter. It would hurt my head to play the class because of how many areas of the screen I had to look at. They need to streamline jt
they need to make wow2 and SCUniverse...let the retail andies have frankensteined wow
My gf recently got into wow and it’s shown me how many things I’m just used to dealing with that new players have to jump hoops to understand. Problems we haven’t thought about in years are hours worth of studying for new players. Like finding resources online, figuring out elvui or wa and how mmo rotations work and all of the different instanced modes and organizing their play style. I like the idea of customizing my ui but then I look at games like OW and how simple that UI is, which makes me wonder why we cling to such complexity in MMOs. OW feels so immersive compared to wow when you’re zoned in to a match. I don’t have the answer myself but I hope that we can move towards a more engaging experience with wow. I think simplifying rotations and making more movement active fights would be a good starting point (i realize that rotations aren’t hard to understand but like Bellular is saying, it’s about where your eyes are). We see plenty of games with combos that we don’t need 36 buttons to pull off
This was well done and the issue needs exposure, so thanks. I am in no way affiliated with the addon Hekili, but it is a rotation helper that as a hardcore altoholic I find incredibly helpful. I don't follow the next ability it suggests 100% of the time, but one of the nice things is, the next suggested ability is always off c/d and has the resources to cast it, so it's a great "when in doubt, cast what's in the window" helpful addon. I don't argue it should be necessary, just that I find it relieving a lot of the decision making stress.
That's one of the things that my friends complained about when they tried wow
100% agree, the discrepency between what skills do what and when they should be used is so muddled. I think the spell effect indicators should be overhalled for every spec to provide more information on procs, dots and buffs etc, so it is all in the centre of the screen where you need it. And each element needs to have a toggle in the menu so people can turn them on and off if they want. Weakauras are all well and good, but they detract from the immersion, and are confusing as hell for newer players.
You know. SWTOR isn’t the greatest MMO. But I will say this. Their UI is completely customizable where you can move everything and anything around any where on the screen, change the size of it, including making buffs and debuffs larger, and you can also make certain things not show up on screen at all. This was something they have always had. But even that wasn’t perfect and still had a lot of issues.
They can fix the game left and right. But until they do something about the toxic experience for new players. We aren’t ever gonna stop the bleeding. Help new people out. No one gives a f how elite you think you are. If we never get/ retain new players. Then we are SOL.
Exactly!
L2 had a mentor system which actually worked.
Of course I have fun helping out new players all the time. But untill Blizz implements a system to incentivize this behaviour, I will always belong to a minority of players who just love being friendly..
I watched this with interest because I have a background in UX and UI design, but to be honest I find the default interface fine most of the time. The only add-on I've used to help understand what was going on is ArcHud so I could get a health bar closer to my character in the middle of the screen. As monitors get wider, we have to dart our eyes around more. Now that they let us move things around, I'm only using the built-in UI.
Removing addons (not all) has made the player experience better for me. I still have addons, but it's far less than I used to have
Hoping the continue work on the UI, it's a might fine start what they've done for DF
every expansion, I try to set up those weak auras, and every expansion I give up, I have a masters degree in computer science but its too much effort to and too complicated to figure it out for a game
I actually think you dont need weak auras, simply moving the abilities more center screen is enough.
they should just doa built in hekeli addon that tells you the rotation. also add some like audio queue to tell people what to click right something like mortal kombats finish him sound but its what ever the ability name is and obviously let it be able to be turned of cause i dont want it
Summoner's War. It's an app game. It has the best UX i've seen. Conveyance is in all the controls. The story guides you thru the content, which is interconnected. It gives freedom, options, and has quick fix effects. It has soft-core warnings when doing auto content and looking away from the screen. So many slice of life features, it's easy to notcie they're gone when i switch to another game.
i have played on the classic UI from ages and had no problem with it (ofc as i healer i used healbot cos in fact there was no raid frames if iam correct and as a mage i had to click one by one player to give intellect or just use dust to cast mass) and i just get used to it that much that when they changed ui i HAD to find addon that brings back old school UI
In my opinion, they should ban all add-ons to make an even playing field. But we all know the "elite" players can't play without their add-ons. Tells you everything you need to know about the good players. I've played for 15 years without addons besides a dps meter.
Hi Bellular. interesting video. I've found an interesting solution for myself to keep an eye on cooldowns without having to resort to an addon. I simply built an action bar that only pops up in combat and contains just a few key spells that I want to keep track of.
Of course, this isn't a complete solution, but it's still quite satisfactory. I also think that more things should be customizable. Players have different preferences when it comes to the UI. Just like the life bars. Here I found out that I can't get around "name plates" as an addon.
LG, from Freakfactory
This is also what I do. It's something I did in FFXIV due to the amount of cooldowns to keep tabs on there + procs to track for classes like bard. Have two bars that I put on either side of my character and have about 3-4 abilities in each. I have a resource metre below. I've never had to look down since. I've done the same thing in WoW thanks to the new UI, and again, don't really have to look down anymore -- at least for the classes I play. My one gripe is that if you zoom, WoWs resource bar will drop very low and will actually overlap my UI. I'd prefer for it to be always static in its position. Hopefully, Blizzard looks into that.
10:42 Yea... Lux is the savior I needed to play Aff for DF lmao.
Just use ElvUI and Weak Auras. Set up your own stuff based on your own preferences. Im a clicker and I need everything clearly visible from my bars. Having buffs tracked way up by the minimap or over my characters head is just horrible.
One thing I hate, is things that give a random buff. Like the Maghar orc racial. The only way to find out if you got crit, haste or whatever, is to highlight it.
You mentioned sound alerts. The DBM klaxon noise can just... PLEASE go away. It physically hurts me. And I have so many alts, so just changing it every time I log on is a huge pain.
Shoutout to Ipse's WA's!
If you actually level your class and not boost it having an issue with the resources that shouldn’t be a problem
I agree this game has a massive barrier to entry. Not just entry, but it happens again at end game. I was trying to explain to a couple of my friends what to do at end game (What Do I do Now that I maxed?) Even as I was explaining it to them, I was struck by how complicated it would seem to a new player. We all have years of experience, so we "get" it.
It is difficult to have a game fro both experienced players and caters to new players. I almost think they have simple servers that are less complex. New players start on the simple server, then if they want to stay they gravitate to the real server.
You'd get the same idiots who camp BGs as lowbie twinks just grief stomping everyone.
No, the _hilarious_ thing about the Personal Resource Display is that you have to disable it and install NugComboBar or sth because it DOESN'T EFFING WORK. Oh sure, tell me I've got full combo points when I've got like...two. I *love* wasting 40 Energy on pathetically weak finishers!
"insane frenetic action"? Are we talking about the same God of Walk?
I've never used ui addons in WoW. They're always just too obtrusive, and take me out of the game rather than helping me get deeper into it.
Most people find it the opposite, better laid out UI keeps you in the game more as you dont need to keep bouncing your focus around the screen.
showmewhen also does the "use this and then this" and it keeps track of things that are off cooldown
That dutch angle tho 11:20
Just a week ago you were PRAISING the new UI.
Weak Auras and Rotation Macros are basically BOTTING. You arent playing the game a PROGRAM is doing it for you. I dont use them and have been playing since 2005.
Dude expansive ui doesn’t mean better. Look at Elden Ring for example. It just makes it sleep mode.
I can't bring myself to play anymore because of this, the new talent system ruined me.
I really like using TellMeWhen. But the core seriously needs to be fixed.
Now, it would seem that after the UI revamp we are expecting everything to be part of the default UI... well, that's because it should be. It's true that WoW has allowed a lot of customization thanks to the programmability of the UI but the fact that players have developed thousands of UI replacements over the years is not an excuse for the base UI to suck.
Everything that matters in combat, from defubbs to temporary buffs, should be EASILY visible in the most convenient position (typically below your character, in the middle of the screen) and the features of every class and spec should be designed around a CLEAR (and consistent) on-screen communication.
I HATE that they even nerfed the nameplates with 10.0.
Now I can't see if I have threat, I can't differentiate anymore if a mob is non-elite or elite.
It is sooo awful. Now I HAVE to use a nameplate add-on otherwise I cannot play the game on the same level anymore. It just sucks
Partner with weak auras to create the besy UIs... Guck me I'm a UI designer and let's be honest weak auras has the best designs.
Love the raincoat?
I loved the UI we had in shadowland the one you are using in your video is way too intrusive and ruins immersion. If you do raiding it makes sense why you like it but for me who doesn't it is a horrible setup
BM doesn’t even have visual spell alert lol. Just glowing buttons
I always just put a click through bar with my cooldowns right in the middle of the screen
So now blizzard is no longer an evil company do you give us permission to play?
Blizzard doesn't have to pay for development if people solve the issues via weak auras. And yea, IMO the game is garbage if you remove ui add-ons and nameplates
They need to separate stat buffs from ability altering buffs. It's all jammed at the top.
the addon ui sucks balls the base one is just fine dont neeed shit popping up all over my screen confusing me even more tracking things and keeping up with it isnt that hard at all
Im probably an outlier for this, but between my guild, and the raiding and M+ groups I run with, I am only one of two people who dont use WeakAuras or some form of UI Addon. I haven't since ever. Yet I have always been a top performer in Heroic Raids, and in WoD I started to get serious about Mythic and Timed (formerly Challenge, now M+) Dungeons and I still am able to get 15s done no problem, and 20s with practice and prep that I accumulate during getting to that 15. Ive always questioned why people feel they need these addons, but after hearing someone explain it (or unlike my M+ buddies assume I just have it), I understand why people would want/need them now. I have no problem focusing my mind when its time to focus and can keep track of all the buffs, debuffs, and resource calculations and cooldowns in my head with minimal glances at the default position of buffs, my character portrait, and my action bars (which to be fair I do have organized as "Main Rotation Here", "Utility Here", "Emergency Here" and so on). Between that and the semi-built in WeakAuras the default game (that gives visuals or makes things glow when they proc with some abilities that require X to be activate or show a max stack of Y), I can see now why people would need addons to help streamline and put this in one spot to make it easier to track so they arent giving themselves headaches trying to look at more then they can handle.
Am I the only one who uses the dragonflight UI? I don’t mind it tbh I pref it over elvui. I understand the problems however
i dont agree with this take. there are plenty of ways to customize the base ui in away to make any class playable without weak auras.
They are not mandatory..... You need to play and use the UI and then figure out the best way it works for YOU. Too many idiots see a streamers UI and copy it not knowing how to use it or what they are looking at. I have been heroic raiding and then mythic when it switched with default UI look for years and it's perfectly fine.
Icelance should glow
That's another bug
Very tested expansion lul
No addons for me, new WoW UI is good enough for me. Dont @ me.
I’ve never been more uncomfortable playing wow lately. All the UI UX stuff here Im suddenly very aware of now.
should listen to you amazing ideas/porblems for Blizzard
Another good idea blizz will never do this tho
WoW without UI add-ons feels like what I imagine playing a non-guitar hero game with a guitar hero controller would feel like.
I could function better if I could turn down the opacity of other player’s spell effects and just focus on my own and the enemy. The rest of the UI honestly would be fine for me at that point, besides enemy nameplates stacking into space when there are too many. Still not sure how to fix that. I’m no UI master.
Now if they could just get out of their own way…
Great points.
"Weakauras with audio cues are just mmo simon says" my man just described 90% of arena skills
Thank you.. Good points :)
I think we're whining too much as a community... Just use weakauras and everything's okay :D it isn't that hard
Lets not even talk about outlaw rogue resources.
Blizzards ui is abysmal and the addons available make it a little more usable but even then you're still looking everywhere but at the fight, unless you are looking at the fight in which case you're not looking at your abilities so now you don't know when your cooldowns are up. It's frustrating to say the least
This is literally just untrue. Most common UI setups today put all the information you need in the center of your screen, which you see during combat easily. As for cooldowns, most people learn when their cooldowns are up and when they aren't and aren't looking at their bars the entire fight. There's literally NO solution possible for players who need to look at their action bars constantly, to get them to see the fight and all relevant information.
@@billymays9296 yes, they put it right in the center of your screen making it take up all your attention. Instead of the fight and the lore. And you need an add on to have all that information cause blizzards ui still doesn't move everything. Point being you shouldn't have to look at your bar constantly but because you have so many different abilities on different cooldowns that's what you have to do
This games combat UI is a SHIT SHOW.. I couldnt simply play this game at all without weak auras.

Bruh. My Wrath realm still has the floating necropli from the scourge invasion and the argent crusade in capital cities. Asking for a decent UI is so far beyond their ability. They can't even get a 14 year old game to do what it did 14 years ago when they have the blueprint for how it was done.
Gladiator is hard, mythic is hard, rbgs above 2000 is hard, making a group is hard, joining a team is hard… EVEYTHING IS HARD like deeznutz
Nah, I played with nothing but the base UI since vanilla, I never used DBM unless we really struggled on a raid fight.

I'm playing an MMORPG, not a combat sim.
Dude, even if blizzard made a fast read UI I guarantee 90% of raiders would still customise their UI to their preference. I make all my own WAs as big CDs use sound triggers instead of visuals.

Esc, edit mode, tick „raid frames“, then click the raid frames. You can make the settings in the little pop-up window
It’s the same for your party frame. Try both!
Anyone that's played the game for a while can point out deficits in the stock UI. Even the Dragon Flight overhaul is woefully ineffective. This is their game, they know what information is important, why is it so hard to get the UI right when the community can fix it for them in days.
The new UI is tanking everyone’s FPS…addons or not
I never understood how Blizzard's people thought it was a good idea to display your own + enemy info in the top left corner when most of the fights happen in the middle of the screen. How not suited to create games can you be? It's like removing all info from behind the steering wheel in a car and install them near the roof on the passenger side.
