Up to this day I still believe that the Arms legion artefact weapon should have been Broxigar's axe! So much potential there..

Said the same thing when the artifact weapons were announced. The fact that we still ended up meeting up with Broxigar at one point made it sting even more.
The problem is that only means something to someone who read the books. For most people, Broxigar is a "who", and the Axe of Cenarius is a "what?"

So I didn’t know that Nozdormu rescued a whole bunch of blue dragon eggs from the war of the ancients. That’s interesting. As for the idea of them being retconned out of the story, maybe, but I could see a way that Blizzard could reintroduce them in a later patch if they wanted to. Here’s my idea. Nozdormu asks Kalecgos to meet him somewhere, saying he has something to show him. When they meet up, presumably in the Caverns of Time or somewhere else connected to the Bronze flight, Nozdormu reveals the hidden cache of eggs and offers them to Kalec to help rebuild his flight. Kalec’s initial reaction is pissed, however; after all, if he had these eggs the whole time, why didn’t he just give them to Malygos? Nozdormu’s answer - he tried to. But Malygos refused, perhaps accusing Nozdormu of betraying his oath to Tyr and the Titans by trying to change the timeline he’s supposed to preserve. Maybe that’s why Nozdormu has been so obsessed with preserving the timeline, but now that he thinks his future transformation into Murazond is imminent, he wants to see to it all of the dragonflights have a future, and offers the eggs to Kalecgos to save his family

I disagree, I do not think the dragon flights are the good guys, I don't think they're the bad guys either, I think they are simply duty bound protectors, but how they go about protecting is very.....questionable if it means forcing others of their kind to join them or be locked away for eternity.....

I think their duty is to Azeroth, not the mortals. But yes most people aren't good or evil. Even the Burning Legion and the Void have redeeming qualities. It's a meme but a lot of groups and cosmic forces are morally grey.

As someone who started with Warcraft 2 I appreciate going back and showing that history, even if it was very bare bones at the time and probably all got retconned since then.
Afaik not much has been retconned, only some things in WoW like the shape of the continents and stuff. The only retcons are sort of, recontextualisations. Like Alexstrazsa was the queen of the dragons and was captured to breed dragons for the orcish horde. Back then dragonflights didnt exist, all the dragons were green. Titans didn't exist yet either and the burning legion was more akin to classical demons, like in diablo, where sargeras qas the demon lord of the underworld, something that waa retconned into being the twisting nether.
@@ub3rfr3nzy94 nah, there were tons of retcons. the existance of the dragonflights, and their blessing from the titans, is in and of itself, a massive retcon, to the original "just dragons".
It was bare bones at that time, but you could say they scaled it up quite a bit

Fantastic retrospective and analysis. Still, I’ve yet to hear anyone explain the Thunderscales of Legion. Definitely hints of the Primalists power merged with Aspect-type dragons. Where? When? Why? How? I’d love to know, since they’re some of my favorites.
The Titans are pragmatic and seek to order chaos. Primal elements are chaotic by nature.

The primalists are a way of adding more greek myth to Wow which is cool. All the primalists are titan like each with its own flavor of elemental power.

Really good video. At least the retcons they did with the dragons are really better than the jailer one, who we still don't know his true intention. When I see how good dragon story is, I'm sad they fucked Sylvanas and the jailer one.
As much as i loved Dr.Who when i was a kid, that timelord gave everyone an out with the "Timey wimey" stuff LOL. Hopefully they can make a story they stick to finally.
Rhonin and Krasus, to this day, are two of my favorite characters. Because of that, I think, I prefer how Richard Knaak presented the stories over the changes made more recently.
man i read the knaak books back in high school, good times. Cool video! Hey btw, proto-Malygos also heard the voice in the mountains earlier in the book. Not much else to say there since obviously he fell to madness later.
Remember that as we learn in the expedition campaign, Tyr got this idea by seeing how proto drakes could get infused by the primal elements and thought "hmm, maybe dragons can be infused with a cosmic force"
And now we're just short Light, Life (proper life, not Order+Life), and Death dragons (unless you count the lesser dragonkin in Ardenweald). Because we have Void (Twilight), Order (Aspects and their flights), Chaos (nether drakes)

The Dragon lore probably changed because new writers came and new ideas were added.
Heck even with the same writers, ideas can change when it’s over 20 years of hints before making a solid story.

Death was only green from the basic models they use In game for Wc2 but if you look at his icon in that game and his dialogue or the dialogue from campaigns it’s all black dragon or referring to a might black dragon 🫠
I genuinely miss the Knaak era.
Sure, every character was smothered in plot armour and had crazy power / scale creep but it had so much more of a high fantasy feel.
Did it make sense for an orc to be fighting in WotA? No. Was it fun to read? Absolutely.
He did a better job writing the Alliance as an actual alliance than pretty much everyone after him.

Could you do lore videos on Malygos and Deathwing in the same molds as the ones you did on the current aspects? It seems to me that this would be interesting, given that those two characters have left legacies which remain important to the lore.
Only reason deathwing was green is because of how unit sprites worked. Alex was green too.

I'm REALLY surprised we didn't see him Shadowlands during all the stuff Tyrande was going through. Let's be honest, Tyrande would have thrown her life away if it meant killing Sylvanas. When Tyrande found Brox, he was in a very similar place, suffering from survivor's guilt. Honestly, if we'd had a moment focused on Tyrande and then an offscreen voice says "Shaman" and she turns and finds herself face to face with Brox, we would have lost our minds, in a good way.

The term retcon... is misguided for Blizzard and the WoW franchise. The Lore is whatever Blizzard wants it to be. So while the term Retcon is fine in general... it does not cover cover the overall changes Blizzard weaves into their current stories building upon (or even adjusting/ignoring) older lore if necessary. In the end the Lore is whatever they want it to be. Keeps things fresh and new and at the same time keeps the previous lore relevant.

There’s a lot of settings where gods can be challenged or novels, like Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archives, where mortals have to contend with cosmic level deities

Is it just me who sees that they are drawing an obvious parallel between Sargeras offering the leaders of the Eredar power in return for fealty with Velen rejecting the "gift" and the same thing is true with what the Titans collectively offered the to-be dragon aspects with Razageth rejecting the "gift"?
It seems to me that they have gone for the same story here but with the concept of "good" and "bad" reversed, maybe to show that "Order" is the current force that occupies the galactic battleground that is Azeroth.
Just bad writing. The whole notion of "order" being shut as "bad" as "chaos" doesn't fit at all with any actual theology and comes from aping Moorcock's books. Except Moorcock wrote a far more doomed to fail setting than later copiers short of maybe Warhammer.

Yea but only because ALL dragons in Warcraft II were "green". I might just be forgetting, but I don't remember them being separated into flights. They were just all lumped into one group. These were still the early days of building Warcraft's lore.
There wasn't Dragonflights until Knaak wrote his book and he was just applying how DnD handled dragons to Warcraft with a side of making them color coded superheroes.
Haven't watched the video yet but wanted to comment that from a clickbaity standpoint I liked the other title and thumbnail better. Again, no idea if this new thumb/title combo is more appropriate.

Ah yes back when the Lore was actually interesting. Which stopped in MoP. Then was interesting for a bit in Legion. Then horrible until Dragonflight. Very bipolar in their approach.
The issue is when the lore was bad it flat our ruined the game.

I agree, the lore is much more cool now. I kinda liked that Galakrond was basically Cronos/Saturn eating his own children stories, but oh well, things change.

This Expansion has DRAGONS to make MARKETING IT TO THE CHINESE easier. Even the NPCs look more ASIAN than they ever have.

That's the beauty of Warhammer 40,000 canon by contrast. It doesn't exist, so much that we get is mythologized after 10,000 years of Human history or altered by The Inquisition to cover it up. Even things that were in fact deliberately changed could still be true. In addition travel through The Warp can send you back in time or into the distant future. In fact, it's not accurately even known exactly what year it actually is in the setting. The resulting conflict was the Chronostrife.

A story about how things got misinterpreted and the good people did some bad things but we can heal and start over?....so blizzard harassment and how they can change and do better is the plot to dragonlands?
They're not really making a credible setting but just making a world to refuse to engage with actual reality in.
Wish they would actually put effort into re-contextualizing things in game as you explain it instead of just popping out contradictory things without explanation. Takes me out of caring for the lore of the world if they just add things that change past perceptions without explaining it.

There's Deathwing in Warcraft 2. Of course him being green isn't canonical - this is about the evolution of the dragons through the franchise. Just like how Alex rapidly went from building to full blown character.
I loathe the new Titan Lore, it's all about subverting expectations. You thought the Titans was good for the last 20+ years..... WRONG!!! they're actually the bad guys. Subverting Expectations is the worst, it's all about dissecting old Lore because the Writers are hacks.
the new lore is exactly my type of lore. Finding out that the gods are all schemers manipulating mortals “for their own good” is not just realistic but its also the foundation of great stories. More than that, but of course explore old lore! Of course add a perspective to the story we didn’t consider, anything else is that boring lord of the rings cookie cutter crap.
