Jarome Iginla never won a Stanley Cup. Here's what left him empty-handed.

Jarome Iginla was one of the most exciting players to watch. There were so many weapons to his game that made him a consistent threat his entire career. But the longtime Flame never got to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup despite finding himself incredibly close.
In Calgary the biggest issue was financial. It's honestly surprising he was able to stay a Flame as long as he did considering their history of being unable to retain superstar. But with Darryl Sutter handling both coach and GM duties, they made it work. Miikka Kiprusoff came over from San Jose to make the biggest difference. Iginla got help from Craig Conroy leading the hard hat crew of 2004 and ended a lengthy playoff drought by taking a long, winding road to the Final. There they met the Tampa Bay Lightning and combined for an incredible series.
Some might think the answer to why Iginla didn't win a Cup is as simple as "Martin Gelinas no goal in game six," which certainly contributes to it. But they still had another shot after that, and the series hadn't been without drama before then either.
Iginla found more opportunities outside of Calgary as well, jumping aboard the Penguins during 2013's lockout-shortened season to play alongside Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The league's top offense helped earn the Presidents' Trophy and found no issues through the first two rounds. Then they met the Bruins - the team Iginla could have joined instead of Pittsburgh. It went poorly.
Thankfully Iginla got a do-over and joined Boston for the following season, which like Pittsburgh looked to be a perfect fit. But rivalries tend to spoil things and Montreal did just that in an amazing seven-game series.
It was his last best chance. He came closer than so many, but further than seems fair considering the talent and mindset he maintained over a 20-year career. He's still always going to be one of the best, he's just also going to be untitled.

@@lucatartaglia4007 it's going to depend on whether compliance buyouts come back or not, Georgiev is in all likelihood going to be traded at the draft due to the Rangers completely mismanaging the cap, handing out nmc's to the wrong people and always biting the bullet in buyout roulette. Not to mention the 1.5 million we'd save would be nothing compared to the 8.5 we'd clear

As a Canucks fan it's always nice to see a Flames player fail, but as someone who saw Iggy help win gold in Vancouver and be a class act throughout his career I'll always respect him.

Growing up in Calgary as a first-gen Canadian, it was always so amazing to see a black player dominating the league, and being so classy and such a good role model off the ice... he's the reason I finally started playing hockey at age 27 after never having a chance to as a kid... still my favourite athlete to this day...
Really great story! So glad he inspired you. Iggy was one of my favourite non-Habs growing up. Pure class and one of the best Flames ever.
Amazing stuff man. As a fellow first-gen Canadian, Jarome is definitely my favourite athlete of all time as well. He was a massive inspiration to a lot of us first-gens. The way he conducted himself both on and off the ice demonstrated what it meant to be world class citizen.
Not many people dislike Jarome, even fans of Edmonton and Calgary. Rather like Sakic and Yzerman in terms of universal respect.

"Iginla Gave Everything he had to Calgary." Truer words have never been spoken. He was committed to the team, and for someone who grew up just outside of Edmonton (my hometown of St.Albert), not only did he commit himself to the Flames, he committed himself a team that, to the Oilers, is synonymous with the word "rival."
I'll always remembers how Jarome's involvement and success in Calgary made it difficult to be 100% behind the Oilers whenever the Flames were in town.
His pronunciation of Gelinas was killing me

I had family that lived in Tampa at the time and me, being an 8 year old small town Canadian kid, stopped talking to them for a year after Tampa won the cup. I was so pissed.

I first met Jarome when I was about two years old. He's been my favourite player my entire life. He is one of the kindest players off the ice. This might take a while.
As I mentioned earlier I first met him when I was two. My mother and I had moved to Calgary from Saskatoon after her branch office was shuttered, resulting in her transfer to Calgary. It was at the annual Townsend Tigers ball hockey game that is held at Alberta Children’s Hospital. I couldn't walk yet so I was in a wheelchair and since this was at the start of the 2000-01 season Iginla hadn't become the marquee star yet. Instead of playing on the Flames team, he pushed me around in the wheelchair. I don't remember much about it but I have a picture of him pushing me around.
I met him a couple more times before I moved back to Saskatoon in 2003. This was in time for the 2003-04 run, I was enthralled and my mom let me stay up way past bedtime, so did my dad when I visited him. I was devastated by the loss, however, in addition to that, the night of the Game 7 somebody stole a Calgary Flames car flag that I had grown attached to. My mom brought the story to the attention of one of Saskatoon's local TV stations, we were interviewed and everything. People sent me all kinds of Flames memorabilia, I was also mailed an authentic jersey by the Flames themselves.
My mom and dad were never really happy after 2000 and by 2004 they had separated. After the final my mom decided that we would move to Kelowna, to be closer to her parents who had retired there. I attended Raymer Elementary in the fall, and by sheer coincidence my new PE teacher lived right next to Jarome's summer home. So every year from Grade 2-4 Iginla would pass along a gift to my PE teacher that I would get in September. I remember he gave me a signed poster one year. This made me like Iginla still more, he was, in a way, a constant in my life.
Since he would come to Kelowna every summer I once got the chance to watch him and Chuck Kobasew play indoor soccer, I was awe-struck when they came to talk to me afterwards. I had brought a small Flames flag with me, I already had some signatures on it, but I didn't have Iginla's. I couldn't even talk to them I was so amazed.
I moved up the Okanagan Valley when my mom remarried, so I no longer had the same PE teacher. However, when Iginla played his first game in Calgary as a Bruin my mom took me there. We went to the Bruins open practice beforehand, I was again too nervous to go up but my mom got Iggy to sign my Heritage Classic jersey. It was amazing to be in the Saddledome for that.
A few years later Iginla had gone to the Avalanche. I went to the Vancouver Canucks young stars challenge with my step-dad in 2017, we were at the Flames-Jets matchup. It just so happened that we sat near Joe Sakic, I spent the entire first intermission talking to Joe - I even had to remind him that people were asking him for autographs. After all was done he gave me my email and promised to tell Jarome I said "hi."
Finally, once Iginla retired I wrote him one last letter in 2018. Throughout his career, I would write him letters and he would always reply. I knew he had settled in Boston so I did some digging around to find his address. In the letter I thanked him for everything that he had been for me growing up. I sent him the picture of him pushing me in the chair, my grad photos, as well as a card I had of him on the Avalanche for him to sign - by that point his signature on my jersey had washed off, we didn't have a permanent marker that day. For a bit a thought my letter had been lost in the mail, until in December I got an unmarked envelope with American stamps.
Iggy sent his reply on card stock he had left over from his time in Calgary, it reads:

I enjoyed the letter and pictures you sent, time sure does fly, eh!

He didn't return the Avalanche card I sent him, he instead gave me one of his own rookie cards.
I don't know whether he was this way with everyone, but he is truly a special person. One day I hope to write a book about him, I'm studying Poli-Sci/History so I plan on becoming an author in addition to a professional. He's still my favourite player, you can't replace that.
Yea, that sounds like Iggy. Class act. Always hoped him living here in Kelowna would mean he would end up playing for the Canucks. Can you imagine the damage he could have done with the Sedins? (Admittedly, someone would have to switch something up for that to happen, but it’s fun to dream)

Facts.
Yikes, an entire tragic opera could be written on why that Canucks team couldn't deliver a cup. It's 2020 and a considerable amount of my brain is still devoted to listing all the reasons why that didn't happen.
As a native Calgarian and fan. This guy redefined what it was for a "home" team to me and most people i know here. You could see him in the city all year with his family. He would gladly take photos with you and just be the nicest person. He went to City events of his own volition.. and when we went on the 04 run.. its was a bitter sweet end. sure we wanted the cup.. but Calgary loves the people who love Calgary. We are a often forgotten and overshadowed city.. so we have always appreciated players (Great or horrible) who choose us. Its why we like Johnny and Chucky. Love you Iggy
Much love to Iggy. A great teammate and a true leader who assisted one of the most important goals of the 21st century. Maybe not a Stanley Cup champion, but he earned those two Olympic golds and is one of the best Flames ever!
A complete player. An Olympic gold hero to Canada. A hockey legend. A consummate professional. A million dollar smile that sold the game well. One of the best wristers of all time!
Finally my time to shine. Jarome was born in the same city I was, and I live right beside jerome Iginla arena. His cousin was in my class and I've seen jarome so much that he's just kind of a guy to me. Got all my fanboying out after the golden goal. But he's a really nice guy, especially to kids. As someone who got to watch Iginla on a nightly basis, one of the classiest moves was no doubt on the night of Linden's final game when half of the Flames team was already in the dressing room only to be called back out by Iginla to show respect to another hockey great.
This one bums me out. Loved Jarome as a player and by all accounts he's also just a great dude. Deserved a better fate in 2004.

one of the greatest to ever play the game. Even after leaving the Flames, he was a force on every team he played for, even in the twilight of his career with the LA Kings. His assist on Crosby's golden goal in 2010 is one of the most pivotal and significant moments in hockey history. The majority of his 625 goals came without playing alongside linemates of his calibre either, and he literally dragged the Flames through the mud for 16 seasons (with the help of a few other notable players like Kipper along the way). His resume speaks for itself, and the fact that he was snubbed from the NHL's "100 greatest players" list is an absolute crime. He may not have won a cup, but he ended his career as a champion. Next stop, the Hall of Fame.
Iggy was a true testament to how the game should be played. Looking at all of those quotes, he never shifted the blame. Thank you for this beautiful (albeit somewhat painful) trip down memory lane!
Iginla has and will always be my favorite hockey player ever, its so sad he never got his cup, but he did so much for the city of Calgary and for hockey itself, he will go down as one of the best to ever lace'em'up

Lead by example, play hard, stick up for your teammates, and never ask something of your fellow players that you wouldn’t do yourself. Iginla was, is, and always will be. THE MAN.

Idk how many times I've heard this, but every time they seem to ignore that even if it had counted Tampa still would've had plenty of time to tie it up again. It was hardly a guarantee that they would've won had it counted.

It was still 2-2 going into OT, so theoretically, the Flames would’ve won that game had the goal counted.

This made me very sad to watch. Jerome Iginla was everything one could ever want in a leader and a player. One of my favorites to watch. I knew I was kidding myself when he went to the kings but I was hoping in my heart it could be a Ray Borque moment; him getting to raise the cup, but it will always be an unfulfilled dream for a lot of hockey fans everywhere.

It is, though. You can be the most skilled player in the league and not even come close to contending since you can only play for about 20 minutes per game on top of just having a goalie stand on his head. Unlike baseball, you can’t change the outcome of a 3-0 game with a swing of a bat, you need to score 4 unanswered goals while not letting another one through your own net. Then there’s the skill barrier. Pretty much anyone can put up a shot in basketball, soccer, or tennis. But in hockey, you have to be able to know how to skate (which is already a huge skill divide since most Americans can’t or haven’t skated) maintain balance and apply strength regardless of whether you’re putting up a wrist shot, slap shot, snap shot, one timer, or deke. All in which require a different form in order to just get the shot off. Then there’s timing, especially with dekes and one timers. Too early, and you won’t the shot off. Too late, and you’ve committed a turnover. The hardest part is the accuracy. Goaltenders with their current equipment can easily save 910 out of 1,000 shots they face assuming they are properly positioned and don’t get caught up in odd man rushes. This means that your accuracy can and will dictate how often you’re able to score. You can go top shelf and risk the goaltender making a glove or stick save, you can go low for a rebound and risk an easy pad save that gets covered up for a faceoff, you could go five hole, but the butterfly position makes this option impossible. The most effective way to score is cross crease. Even this isn’t viable since the defense in today’s league has no issue getting in front of a shot. And then there’s just bad luck goals that nobody could have possibly prevented, be they deflections, bad angle rebounds, knucklepucks, teammates accidentally screening their goalie, or man advantage (odd man rush or special teams). Even the rules make this game so hard to win since the NHL uses a 3 point system to determine winners quickly. Did you win in regulation? You get 2 points, they get 0. Did you win in overtime? You get 2 points, they get 1. Did it go to a shootout (which is a completely illegitimate way to break a tie and you know it)? You still get 2 points, they still get 1 point, but the shootout points don’t count in the case of a tiebreaker in the season standings. This brings the conundrum of NHL .500 as well as an illusion of parity. Sure, we’re last in the division right now, but we’re only 8 points behind the division leader and we have 2 games in hand! It doesn’t matter that our goal differential is horrible and we’ve lost 5 straight games, we’re still in the thick of it because we got points for losing! Like I mentioned before, NHL .500 is a disease that forces bad teams to think they’re better than they actually are. If a team is 30-30-22, they’ve won 30 games, lost 30 games in regulation, and lost another 22 games in overtime/shootouts. Despite being a horrible team, that’s 82 points and NHL .500, so this team may be motivated to spend in free agency instead of trying to build upon their bad season by looking to the draft and/or farm system. Everybody’s competing whether they want to be or not.
During the lockout, the league changed the rules to effectively prohibit the Flames' hard-nosed defensive style. The NHL wanted high-flying offensive hockey, but that wasn't Sutter's game.

The NHL has the weakest marketing I have potentially ever seen in corporate America, I mean literally my local plumbing company has better friggin advertising and presence than hockey

8:06 - Longtime Flames fan here, and while a _lot_ of us still insist #ItWasIn 16 years later, I've never been so convinced. For one thing that ~45° camera angle is deceiving, showing white ice under the puck when in reality it was in the air, likely _just_ on the line and not across it (which is what a CGI replication commissioned by ABC for game 7 showed). Certainly not conclusive enough IMO to overturn the call on the ice, which was not only that it was no goal but that it was a non-event not even worth stopping play over. As well, the overhead angle you showed before it (which I didn't even know existed!) doesn't clearly show the puck at all.
But then also the fact that the refs could have ruled it in, _but_ still call it a "distinct kicking motion" and waived it off on that ground; also that while goals were hard to come by in 2003-04 Tampa Bay still had the league's best offence and Lecavalier or ex-Flame Martin St. Louis or playoff MVP Brad Richards could have easily tied it afterwards anyways.
Regardless, great video even despite the rough memories; it's nice to see more hockey content on this channel! Personally I think a Collapse video about those 1989 Stanley Cup champion Flames would be a good one, but obviously that's up to y'all. :P
@@jstreim I was at game 1 vs Montreal and then game 2 vs Calgary. Crazy how many bandwagon fans we got when the final came around. The MTL game was like 75% full and about 1/4 MTL fans. Still had a great time though. GO BOLTS!

Man deserved a cup, to the point I was actually willing Pittsburgh, then Boston, to win cups - 2 teams I generally dislike. (Then the Avs and Kings, but I'm pretty neutral on them).
