HRH Prince Michael of Kent does look like Tsar Nicholas II. This is such a beautiful documentary of Nicholas and Alexandra. A beautiful love story between them. A shame that it ended in tragedy.. May they rest in peace.

Not only does he look like Tsar Nicholas 11; but also King George V from whom he is definitely descended.

Czar Nicholas seemed like a very thoughtful, sweet and romantic man ❤ I didn't realize how in love he & Alexandra really were (since love is not really high up on the list for royal marriages in this era). RIP Romanov's

Read the book by Robert Massie, 'Nicholas and Alexandra.' It's so well written. Read the first chapter or two and you'll be hooked.

He was a bloody Butcher. Everything from Bloody Sunday to Czarist Pogroms. Any wonder no allied country offered him nor his family political exile. Not even the British Royal family offered him exile.

What a tragedy ! Not everyone is born to be a ruler even if they are born a king. It was not Tsar Nicholas's choice. He was too gentle for such a heavy task.

That's why I feel awful. He didn't want it. He wanted his brother to take it and he willingly abdicated. He refused. And why would Nicholas think democracy would help? Any westernizing was seen as damage as his ancestors died when they tried to implement. Causation isn't correlation. But, you can't blame him, as someone religious and superstitious, not thinking it was directly due it.
Very sad, but informative. This tragedy should never happen again.
As I have mentioned earlier , Prince Michael of Kent reminds me of his cousin Nicky Romanov So handsome the both of them

Nicholas spoke faultless English just like his younger brother, the brothers also spoke fluent French, and passable Danish and German
For a long time all I knew about the Tsar and Empress were "bloody Nicky" and Rasputin. In the 80s or 90s A and E had a series called The Last Russian Tsar. It was far different then what I was taught . Years later I purchased a book on their love letters. This led me to read two more biographies. I became convinced they were saints. I can't remember when or how I learned the bodies had been discovered.i closely followed that story also. I read memoirs written by a female friend, I think Anna, and one of the tutors, I think his name wad Peter,who made it out alive and recorded his memoirs about his time with the family.
I remain a devout Roman Catholic with a strong devotion to this family. They have proved to be strong intercessors especially Holy Royal Duchess Marie. I frequently ask her to intercede for one of my daughters each time she responds quickly.
I also read a biography of Grand Duchess Olga, the Tsars sister, who escaped and migrated to Canada. She died in poverty. In Canada.
I ordered your book The Holy Martyrs. I highly recommend the book .

Alexandra had pulled rank on Mary in their very young years since Alexandra out-ranked Mary, who was born of a small duchy of Teck. In the ensuing years, Mary decided to “get even,” by persuading King George to rescind the offer of asylum. Queen Mary had no idea of the consequences of her actions. I’m certain she suffered for her choice.

@@Petal4822 He did not do so for very valid reasons. At the time George declined them asylum, no one know they would be murdered. It was simply assumed they'd go elsewhere. If N&A really cared about those children, they would have sent them abroad at the outset. They chose not to.
He was a push over. He should have never listened to her or her friend...
I feel so bad for Nicholas. 47 years ago my dad died and my brother was thrust into taking over the family business. He had not been prepared and he didn’t want the role. Suffice it to say, it didn’t go well.

They are Martyrs
Being a martyr doesn't guarentee a place in Heaven. Salvation is a wholly personal doing and I hope that the Romanov family had their hearts right with God Almighty.
It's such a delight to hear the elderly people who were born in the 1890s and early 1900s (some of them were just a little older than the Romanov girls!) talking about their experience of worshipping in person the Romanov family when they were alive. You can tell by their happy facial expressions and joyful speeches how great it was, when the Bolsheviks took power it must have been for them as if the entire world became dark. Thank you for this video, this is the best channel on RUclips about our Romanov Martyrs.

Those elderly people make it so clear that the so-called revolution did not express the feelings of the Russian people, but only served the purposes of the elite. It was a coup from above and from within the State - the people never lost their love for their Tsar!

The Imperial family of Russia was a very loving closed knitted family. They were not like the usual Royal family of Russia, which was very aloof or rather felt higher than other people of Russia. They were rather simple in their lifestyle.
Aloofness was their downfall
As someone else stated, aloofness was their downfall, directly contributing to their murder.
It’s important to distinguish between their personal, private lives and their public lives as rulers. Nicholas and Alexandra were very much in love and had a beautiful family and happy home life. Quite an idyllic personal life by all accounts.
But Nicholas was ill-prepared for life as Tsar and made horrendous decisions, took bad advice, etc. He clung to autocratic rule with absolute authority in the face of changing times, to his great detriment.
Alexandra was gripped by overwhelming fear for her son and embraced Rasputin who seemed to be the only one who could offer help. The Russian populace was aware of Rasputin’s character and her refusal to acknowledge the problem or explain Alexei’s situation at all exacerbated the problem. Instead of offering at least some information and explanation to the people, she withdrew almost entirely, focused only on her own problems.
Neither ever acknowledged or sought to alleviate the suffering of tragedies like the trampling of people at their coronation. Worse, they attended a ball that night.
And they continued to make similar, poor ruling decisions up until their murder.
Admittedly, they didn’t seem to have malicious intent, but they were utterly incompetent as rulers. They completely failed to see and acknowledge the changing times, instead falling back on autocratic rule with absolute power, outdated even then. They cruelly ignored people’s suffering, causing PR nightmares without realizing what a big problem they created.
Bluntly, they made supremely STUPID decisions as rulers. Alexei’s health should have been at least been minimally explained. Rasputin should have been banished. The tragedies and people’s suffering should have been acknowledged and alleviated to the extent possible and balls should have been cancelled. Autocratic rule and absolute power should have been relinquished in favor of some form of democracy. Etc.
Most of all, Nicholas and Alexandra should NOT have withdrawn from the public or cocooned themselves away from public life.
Eventually, it all added up. Their fate and the end of the Romanov family was an absolute tragedy. However, their own behavior as rulers directly contributed to their murder.

He needed an Advisor, a Head of State, and Regional Govenors. Then he could focus on the Arts.
It was tragic in both directions, as it fostered opportunities for the Narcissists to rise to destroy the innocent and Oppress the entire Public.

They were hated for all that suffer due to their complete unknowing what they reigned over.
From the perspective of the 90% hungry and freezing they had to appear as fully self obsessed and utterly imbicels. The story is tragic from every angle.
...and now, the Ruler of Russia is a cold as Stalin. He is merely more competent and knows the world is watching.

No a lot of the subjugation of human rights was not Nicholas the person’s fault but it was done in his name. George had to think about his own people. And if the PM had wanted to send a ship for Alexandra and the children, he could have done so. The PM had the authority to do that- he technically didn’t need George’s permission

Yes, he shared a resemblance with the Tsar partially because he looks a lot like his own grandfather, George V, and partially because, as he mentions, his maternal grandmother was a Russian grand duchess and first cousin to Nicholas as well.

I watched it. It was good but I'm picky when it comes to fictionalized fact or factualized fiction, depending on the subject matter.
I still enjoyed it despite the inconsistencies though.
They actually showed the tattoo they Czar had,he got it when he was a young man in Japan.

Why his father chose to wait until the last minute to train Nicholas to be Tsar? He should have been trained from the minute he was old enough.

Short answer: Because the Russian Orthodox Church refuses to believe that any of the remains of the Romanov family are authentic. Your best source for more information is Google. There’s a good article in the New York Times newspaper from 2016 explaining in detail exactly why the last two children have not been placed beside their family members. 💙🙏💙
There was no reason to kill them. He abdicated for both himself & his son & he would have left Russia.

Sorry to say Nicholas was not Educated by his father for his role to rule the Russian people. The impression that
the pictures give, that he was playing a lot and did not give his country the attention that was needed to rule his
country so it did not end well for them according to history.

Of course, this documentary was made before the discovery and identification of the bodies of Alexi and Anastasia in a grave nearby to the grave site of the rest of the Royal family. I remember watching this film when it was shown originally on A&E. Since then, the entire Royal family has been reinterred in the Cathedral of Sts Peter and Paul in St Petersburg.

Rasputin used his influence with the tsar and tsarina to appoint ministers to the government who were incompetent and helped to bring the government down in 1917. He was evil.
I keep hearing how Nicholas was completely unprepared for his position as tsar, but he was 26 years old when his father died, so when would his training have begun, if his father had not died at that time?
I might be wrong but I remember hearing that Nicholas’ father saw him as unfit therefore, did not prepare him. And I believe most monarchs ascend the throne around the age of 40 except for cases like Nicolas where his father died young.

King George wanted to save the Romanovs, but his prime minister and parliament wouldn't allow him to do it. The king of England has no real power. The elected parliament has all the power. It has been that way since 1688.
They were blind to see that their country was is dire need of reform. Eventually that mistake cost them.
Not 3 of their 5 children. They were all murdered. The remains of Maria and Alexis have been located

My grandparents lived under the czars rule ....not Nicholas...but his forefathers....I heard horror stories about that time era
What aggrevated me was that the cousins chose to do nothing to grant them assylum. Nicholas' cousin George could have helped them have a safe place to live out the rest of their lives, after he abdicated. He refused, as did England.
Theirs was a very beautiful loving family.
Their lives should've been spared.
It's heart breaking they were executed, but at least they were all together when it happened.
Czar Nicholas was good father and Husband. He was not fit to ruler. Alexandra was good Mother and Wife. not good Empress.
He was fine for the role of ruler. Russia has made a huge step forward in 20 years of his rule. The revolution is not the result of his and only his mistakes. A huge number of reasons for the Revolution stretches back to the 18th century.

I'm not sure if 'unfit' is the right word. They were somewhat unprepared and childlike; their letters show that much. One gets the strong impression they had far rather forget the whole thing and just be with one another and raise their kids. But how does one guide a representative of God?
And that is a lot of the reason why I don't believe in hereditary monarchy. Quite often the person who inherits the position does not want it, but it is considered a dereliction of duty if they don't assume it. And that is just stupid. No one else in the world is required to work at any job if they don't want it. This does not mean that they wouldn't be good at the job; but it is not what they would have chosen for themselves. Queen Elizabeth II is this type of person and her father, George VI, didn't want to be monarch either. He actually cried when he learned it was his fate. But poor Nicholas never wanted any part of it. He did it because he had no choice and then he had to pay for it with his life. If a hereditary heir does not want the hereditary position, then there should be absolutely no shame in passing it onto someone who does want it. And then there are people who want power and authority and then are disasters when they have it, e.g. Donald Trump. But hereditary monarchy is a ridiculous institution in our modern age.

Anna Ra True, their death is tragic and barbaric; but also many people suffered and died because he was an unfit ruler, he was asked to step aside/form a government several time but he wouldn’t, so he was taken down. He should have had the wisdom to know when he is ruining his empire/country. He didn’t care about his “people” that was his down fall
As of February 2023 the belief is that all five children were murdered by their Bolshevik guards. The family visited Cows on the isle of Weight when the girls were in their late teens or early twenties. They broke away from their security people and went shopping in Cowes. However they did not know about paying for goods as they never did that kind of thing before.
Prince Michael (And his siblings Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra) is related to both Tsar Nicholas and Tsarina Alexandra.. his maternal grandmother (Princess Marina's Mother) is the aunt of tsar Nicholas II and his Paternal Grandmother's sister (Dagmar Of Denmark )is the mother of Tsar Nicholas II … Tsarina Alexandra is one of his grand Aunt as she is one of the daughters of Princess Alice who is the sister of his grandfather , King Edward the VII
Also The Queen and Prince Philip are related to both Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra …when matching the DNA s of the remaining's of tsar family both Prince Philip and Prince Michael contributed their DNA
