This is an excellent video of Elizabeth. She was truly an amazing woman especially before and after her husband's death. Dedicating her life to God and to the people of Russia is beautiful. Grand Duchess Elizabeth was truly a remarkable woman...Thank you for that enlightening information about the patronymic Feodorovna.I have always wondered why the Tsaritsa was called Alexandra Feodorovna.
“Alexandra Feodorovna (6 June [O.S. 25 May] 1872 - 17 July 1918) was the empress consort of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia from their marriage on 26 November 1894 until his forced abdication on 15 March [O.S. 2 March] 1917. Originally Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine at birth, she was given the name and patronymic Alexandra Feodorovna when she converted and was received into the Russian Orthodox Church.” Other names, English: Alice Victoria Helena Louise Beatrice, German: Alix Viktoria Helene Luise Beatrix, Russia: Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova.
Really? Alexandra was arrogant, manipulative and controlling. The very worst partner Nicholas could have chosen. Yes, it was a love match but that just gave Alex even more power over him.
@@jasperhorace3804 his parents were very much against the match and I think they were right to be against it too but they and their children didn’t deserve to be murdered in such an cruel way!

Russian history is intriguing. I know I state the obvious, but it fascinates me a great deal anyway, especially the Romanov’s, up to and including WW2.
My late Mother, who parents were from Krakow, spoke respectfully of "Ella". I never knew who "Ella" was, only that she was part of the Russian Royal Family. Now I know more, thank you for this excellent post.
Ella was influential in persuading her sister Alix to marry Nicholas II, her husband's nephew. Queen Victoria did not approve of Ella's encouragement of the Russian marriage. As a young man, the Kaiser was deeply infatuated with Ella. He offered to help her escape after the Russian Revolution. Ella, however, would not accept help from Russia's great enemy. Ella's husband was not popular because he was a very stern administrator of Moscow.

I like the spin this show put on how happy and pure their marriage was! All historical reports actually have him as cold and cruel and arguably homosexual. He treated Ella like a child and some reports doubt the marriage was consummated. They had no children. Ella establishing a religious order to serve the poor and becoming the Abbess was no surprise. Ella's Other sister Irene, happily married Kaiser Wilhelms brother, Henry. They had 2 sons with hemophilia. A fourth sister, May, died very young.
On the West porch of Westminster Abbey is her statue erected in 1998 for Elizabeth of Russia. She was also a great aunt of Queen Elizabeth from her father’s lineage as Ella’s mother was the sister of the Queen’ great grandfather Edward VII.
@@jasperhorace3804 no, actually Phillip had the closer relation. His grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten was sister to Ella and Alexandra, last Russian Empress. @@poorthingTrue. The European Royalty at the time regularly married their 1st and 2nd cousins. Many royal families were direct descendants of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert It's perhaps surprising that more European royal families didn't have significant genetic issues.
As not a Romanov by blood, woman, widow, nun and without heirs her life should have been spared. Although she was kind of a rebel for not leaving Moscow as other Romanovs. Well, she’s a saint now.
I'm so proud of my Catholic and Orthodox roots. When I was young, ever since I read the life of St Joan of Arc, I had a great desire of reading more about the Saints, both from the East and the West, with a great desire to share some of their stories to friends. There's so much one can learn from their collective life-stories and spiritual journeys. St Bernadette, the visionary of Our Lady at Lourdes, France, once said upon reading such stories, "Don't tell me about their virtues, tell me of their faults and flaws and how they overcame them!" If only more churches of various faiths knew more about these people and chose them as positive role-models at this day and age, they might not have a need to declare needless wars on others. Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her fellow Sisters of Charity treat people, regardless of their beliefs and non-beliefs everyday. I'm sure St Elizabeth would also aid her as well by numerous means, from sending some of her nuns to sending food, medicine and other provisions as well as acts as other acts of charity and mercy. I had been told Sister Ella was told of the story of her namesake, St Elizabeth of Hungary, when she was a child, noted for her acts of charity as well. Some of my favorite miracles attributed was when she was confronted by her husband, who noticed she had a bulging cloak full of food, medicine and other items to give to the poor. He asked her what she had in her cloak, she replied there were roses. Considering this was in the middle of winter, he didn't believe her. He opened her cloak and out came roses! He felt she was doing God's work. He also was notified she was treating a leper in their bed. He was about to expel the man out when instead of seeing a leper in their bed, he encountered Jesus crucified in place of the leper. He then ordered all the servants in the household to help their mistress in her ministry and they were most happy to oblige.
@@angelaberni8873 True...like most saints had their trials and triumphs, what some theological scholars described as 'spiritual dryness' or 'dark nights of the soul'. It's best described as when one feels God (as they see God) is so distant to the point of feeling abandoned and yet God is very close. But during those periods does one feel their faith is being tested like that of taking raw ore of metal, it has to go through fire in order to be refined and purified before it's put to use. Whenever St Teresa of Avila (foundress of the Carmelite order of nuns), encountered any nun in her convent who felt depressed, she would remind them, "A sad nun makes a bad nun!" One of her spiritual daughters, St Elizabeth of the Trinity, used to have her own 'spiritual exercises' long before she felt called to enter the cloister. One of these was called 'the Clock of the Passion'...it involved whenever she found herself awakened in the middle of the night and unable to sleep, she took a mental note of the time and meditated quietly on the said hour on which Christ suffered prior to His Crucifixion, from the end of the Last Supper to prior to His agony in the Garden in Gethsemane betrayal and arrest, While in the garden, he told Peter, James and John, "My soul is sorrowful, even unto death...keep watch while I pray...." And as He prayed, His disciples fell asleep. When Jesus noted this, He chided them, "Couldn't you at least stay with Me for at least an hour? Pray that you won't fall into temptation...Simon, Listen to Me...Satan will come upon you like a farmer does with wheat, who separates the grain from the chaff....the flesh is willing, but the spirit is weak. Peter countered, "But, Rabbi, I won't abandon you and am willing to suffer and die with You...." The others added their agreement as well, but Jesus warned Peter, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times!"
I love the Romanovs, and love them more, the more I learn of them. They deserved so much better than the fates that they suffered. They were so much more worthy of their status than other European monarchs.
The Romanovs might not have deserved to die (I'm absolutely disgusted at the murders of children and nuns) but even if they might have been amiable personally, their rule was oppressive as heck and it is no wonder their were constant revolutions.

I think it's important to look at how the Romanovs ruled. Most of the people lived in subhuman conditions, they were considered the property of the landowners, they were tied to the land. The Romanovs considered the divine rulers of Russia and were not prepared to share power with anyone. The communists were no better, except they released the people from their slavery. If Nicholas had followed through with the plans of his grandfather, Russia may be a totally different country today.
I think Nikolaj was not the right person to rule Russia. He lived in a dream world. And he believed that he become tsar through god. And he made such a lot of mistakes.
Elizabeth had a major break with her sister Empress Alexandra over Rasputin. The secret police intercepted telegrams from Elizabeth which she congratulated the murderers. Alexandra was furious. When Elizabeth made one last attempt to warn Alexandra about Rasputin she said the Empress "drove me away like a dog".
А не Елизавета-ли сделала все, чтобы Алиса стала женой Николая? Они ведь знали о гемофилии в семье. Распутин спасал Алексея, и Александра как тигрица сражалась со всеми, кто мог лишить ее мальчика шанса на спасение.

@@margaretcastell9429 hardly any of the European ruling houses had 'pure' blood of the countries they ruled.
Queen Victoria & Prince Albert were 1st cousins, he was German and she had a German Mother. They often spoke German, their children spoke German.

Greece offered the monarchy to Britain's Queen Alexandra's Danish brother.
That's why Queen Victoria was called Grandmother to Europe...her several children & grandchildren all married into Prussia/German houses, Greece, Russia, Spain, Romania etc.

This is an excellent video of Elizabeth. She was truly an amazing woman especially before and after her husband's death. Dedicating her life to God and to the people of Russia is beautiful. One would think that nuns would have been spared of the bloodshed that happened to the Romanov family; I guess people thought Elizabeth was a threat to certain people so she had to be murdered just like her sister. Such a shame that happened. May she rest in peace. I hope I can visit Jerusalem one day to see where she is buried. This was such a beautiful tribute to Saint Elizabeth.

Apparently mother Teresa of Calcutta wasn't the person she appeared to be.🤷
@@angelaberni8873 True...like most saints had their trials and triumphs, what some theological scholars described as 'spiritual dryness' or 'dark nights of the soul'.

Hmm, one bad master traded for another, I think.
