Grand Duke Michael was an unusually handsome man, even by (the high) Romanov standards, with intelligent blue eyes topped by heavy brows and an impressive, well-groomed mustache. I know Tsar Nicholas as good looking but his younger brother, Grand Duke Michael was REALLY handsome! That entire family seemed blessed with beauty. I think he may have been more handsome than the Tsar. I always wondered how he died. You really only hear about Tsar Nicholas and his family being murdered but very little about his brother and sister. All of this was a tragedy. Only the Russians could make this into a grand, historical tragedy.

Michael Romanov should have been emperor when his father died. He would have introduced a constitutional monarchy and avoided war with Japan, thereby averting the revolution of 1905. It is very interesting how history eerily repeats itself in full circles. The Romanov Dynasty of the 300 years reign started with Michael the first that he didn't want to take the title and they begged him too. Once he rose to power he was very serious about his position. In a way once Nicholas abdicated in favour of his brother Michael, the last had an important decision to make as did his ancestor. He left the decision to the people in a way but in contrast to his ancestor the result had the opposite fate for the Romanovs. The parallels are really haunting if you think about it. They started the executions and murders of the Romanovs with Michael too so in a way a Michael was the beginning of the dynasty and Michael the last son of Alexander III was the end.

Communism killed more people in Russia in a few decades than tsarist regime in a few centuries. There is no political system that is ideal, but Tsarist Russia was on its way to become the world's greatest power, with its economic and demographic growth and its cultural development, it was a very dangerous rival for USA and UK , that's why they were behind the revolutions in Russia, as well as behind tthe destruction of German Empire, not the ordinary people. They also had a lot of problems with poverty, race problems, colonialism, so, why they didn't meet the same fate as Russia and Germany? On the wall of the cellar in Ipatiev's house, he found two inscriptions. The first was a copy of the twenty-first verse of Heine's poem "Balthazar": "Balthazar war in selbiger Nacht von seinem Knechten urngebracht." (That same night, Balthazar was murdered by his servants.) The second was in Hebrew and was later translated: "Here was slain the Head of the Church and of the State. The order has been obeyed."

If Nicholas had died from the typhus attack, Misha would have been tsar. Misha favored a constitutional monarchy as opposed to Nicholas, who, under his strict tutor and wife Alexandra's insistence on an autocratic regime. If Misha had become Tsar, there most likely would not have been a Bolshevik Revolution and therefore no Lenin, Stalin or Putin.

    • @johnpickford4222

karen ryder: Really? Don’t crush your brain while sitting. Nicholas followed the conservative policies put in place by his father because he didn’t know how to govern. Michael only embraced a constitutional government after Nicholas granted one. The problem is that Nicholas still ruled as an autocrat and insisted on passing to his son what he himself inherited. It was WWI and Russia’s participation which finally gave way to the Bolshevik Revolution as the Provisional Government continued the war. Leave Lenin, Stalin and Putin out of it as the Romanovs created their own mess. Leave “Misha” to your dreams at night.

It's a very innocent point of view. The Bolsheviks, who is the working class of that time had already been organizing for a very long time. They were tired of the administration enough to kill a damn tsar. Mikhail may be a good person, but how was he going to solve all this misery? Russia couldn’t afford this. Because all this misery was the result of a few centuries not a short time. For the development of the economy, workers who were already working like slaves at that time would have to work harder and this could have had a worse result. No royal man who has grown up in golden cradles can beat a peasant man who has grown up in misery and has nothing to lose. The Romanovs lost because there were workers on the other side who had nothing to lose.

What a shame that Nicholas ii did not abdicate shortly after his marriage!
(Neither he or Alexandra wanted to be at court). Michael Romanov probably
would have been a better Tsar than Nicholas. Michael also may have had
been able to negotiate a more suitable marriage than he one he made with
Natalia had he been the Tsar.
[Although, Arch-Duke Ferdinand had a morganic marriage and was going to be
the emperor of Austria-Hungary. If Edward viii and Wallis Simpson had not been
(they thought) secretly involved with the Nazis, the British government might
have been more tolerant of their marriage.
Nicholas could have lived out his life on a potato farm in a large country house.
(The Pauline Laws did not help or guard the RRF against intrigue.)
Although, it is doubtful that nothing could have prevented the fall of the Romanovs
after WW1 began. The country was ill-prepared for war. However the country may
been able to mobilize better if someone with more skill was at the helm.
