I think King George the sixth was the best thing that could ever have happened to England and the world. If his brother would have been king, we all could have been under the Nazi rule. Edward the eighth was an admirer of Hitler and would surely have turned England over to him. I think that would have put Hitler in power and enable him to take over the world.

Him and Wallis were Nazi sympathisers that was partly why the government gave him a post the other side of the world during the war. After his brother John died he seemed unsympathetic to what happened and in a letter to a friend he compared John to an animal. He even upset his mother by downplaying the tragedy to her.

To reciprocate, In this Canadian's mind, there is no doubt that George VI and Churchill had the greatest respect for the USA and their efforts to aid the free world at large during WW1 and WW2. Men like Churchill and FDR had the foresight to see that if the US refused to fight the nazis in Europe, then the US would have had no choice but to fight a much greater nazi juggernaut on their own eastern seaboards and pacific coast lines for starters. This chaos would have made Pearl Harbour look a canine tussle at a dog park (an ominous but fair comparison not meant to disrespect that tragedy). The free world will always owe an unpayable debt of gratitude to the USA. I just hope the US will right its own political ship and destroy its new enemy of democracy, MAGAt republicans!

Streets, roads, statues, buildings etc weren’t simply named after a monarch for no reason, there was significant public and cultural relation to the monarchy.

Reduced to a figure head and acting & speaking under Parliament's direction, figurehead is all he and monarchy has been since. British parliament has censored Monarchy figures many times since then.
Commonwealth nations currently and post WWII have been abandoning the House of Hanover (AKA Wimdsor) since. Latest in process Jamacia. Former colonies want no part of cost of Royal visit & monarchy means little to most, outside of London in particular & england as a whole.

I’m so excited about this one, I’ve been fascinated by this strong, dutiful man ever since I saw Jared Harris’ beautiful portrayal of him in The Crown. Don’t worry we hate Edward in America too. It always stuck in my craw that Edward got to live to be 80’ish, rewarded for laziness and dereliction, and poor George…

A gallant man, a loving husband, and an excellent father. In addition to all this, he managed to give leadership in Britain's darkest hours. Not since the days of Napoleon Bonaparte had Great Britain been so threatened. The right man at the right time. I shudder to think what might have happened had Edward VIII remained on the throne, married or not.
We in the USA should be grateful for George VI and Winston Churchill. Without them, we might be speaking German, for if the UK had gone down, Canada would have been next and we would have suffered too.

Another excellent documentary, well researched and presented. I personally think George VI would have much preferred never to have been crowned, but seeing that the interests of Britain required it, he gave it his all.
He not only worked hard to sublimate his own leanings to those of his people, he instilled in his Daughter and Heir that same sense of commitment and loyalty he himself had displayed.
Had his Brother not abdicated in George’s favour, it is very likely he would have made peace with Germany. He was moved so far out of the arenas of the war precisely so he could not enter the politics of it.
He did ask numerous times for a role that would place him in a position to, (either through carelessness or desire) be closer to the action. His visit to Hitler’s Germany put his own country on guard, feeling he could not be trusted.
George was the King that was needed, both during the war, and after, as the British Empire underwent dramatic changes without resorting to yet more battles and deaths. He genuinely cared for his people, as a good Monarch should.🖤🇨🇦

I think the very character of the man that King George VI was more than speaks for itself. A most remarkable man with a great deal of not only inner strength but also loyalty, morality, determination and self sacrifice for not only his country but his personal relationships as well for the greater good of the collective whole. Although not necessarily per se a "wanted" position, when it came down to the reality of what he knew was to come, he did not shirk the responsibility of what he knew he needed to do. He stepped into it and gave it his all. I've watched many documentaries and I truly do believe he was a good man with a good heart. He wasn't "flawless", none of us are, but he was absolutely most remarkable indeed.

King George VI was by any judgment a great king. He was personally courageous and overcame many personal problems. He was during the war along with his consort Queen Elizabeth an enormous central source of strength and unity. He made some very arduous and dangerous journeys by air in order to visit his armies in North Africa and the beleaguered island of Malta. After his funeral at Westminster Abbey in 1952 and his interment at Windsor, the floral tributes were laid out on the grass including that of the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. His written note simply said the words contained on the medal of the Victoria Cross, ' For Valour'. There is nothing more to be said. Except, May You Rest In Peace for Eternity Georgius Sextus Rex Imperator.

Yes he was a reluctant King however God Bless him he stepped up to the plate and put aside or at least subdued his own desires and played the part of King nicely (appropriately) dutifully. . During WW2 he and the Queen Mother were a pair of human symbols whom the British people could rally around in their time of trial. Both George and Elizabeth toured the East End tirelessly when people were bombed out of their homes. One East Ender shouted out "Thank God for a Good King". The King immediately retorted " Thank God for a Good people". That sort of dialogue was invaluable to the country at that time.

Thank you for informing me about that beautiful quote that I had never heard before! In your first sentence you said “God Bless him”; I think He did when he gave that East Ender such a heartening reply. In “The King’s Speech”, when Logue and the King are “sparring” in Westminster Abbey, and Logue asks what right King George has to order him off St. Edward’s Chair he replies, “By Divine Right!” I think the quote “Thank God for a Good People”. demonstrates Divine Right beautifully. If we get nothing else from God’s teaching, it’s that we think of others before ourselves. George VI seemed to always do that. Though at 77 I’ll never live to see it, I hope the present Prince George will follow that example when he becomes King George VII.

I think one of the reasons why George VI was such a good king was because he had been through such varied hardships. Neglectful parents, medical issues, a veteran of a historically bloody war at such a young age, and of course, his speech impediment; these all crafted a seemingly unassuming individual into a very admirable man, made more so because Bertie had learned something almost unheard of in royals throughout history: Humility. Bertie resonated with the "common man" because he was not born exceptional. His glory had to be earned.
