I can confirm that the rams listed below work on the 720+ Crucial CT8G4SFS8266 DDR4-2666 Samsung SRPMA100283805E859 8GB 1Rx8 PC4 3200AA M471A1K43DB1-CWE
Absolutely love this product for home use! I bought the Synology recommended 6 GB, and then found your video...I will definately upgrade to 16 GB now and run VM's off of it. I really like the bonding feature this Syno offers, work very well with downloading and streaming my media.
Hi there. Will add useful info: DSM 7.2 will work with 16GBDDR4-3200 SODIMM CL19, but does not work with CL22 memories of the same category (tested on Crucial)
About your advice "MAKE SURE to check that the memory module (especially 16 and 32GB SODIMM modules) are DUAL RANK or ‘DR‘", since most 4GB/8GB memory modules are available only in SR, do they have trouble with DS220+/920+ series? Are 4GB/8GB mostly ok if it's within the official memory upgrade limit?
I just upgraded mine with a 16GB memory and absolutely no problems whatsoever. Also put in 2 1TB Nvme cache memory sticks and no problems either. I have a 1 Gigabit router and switches and this transfers at the 108 MB -120 MB rate, which is 864-960 Mbit. Even though this is fast, it now seems slow compared transferring internally to a raid in my Mac with a raid controller card. I did bond the two ports for the heck of it, and bonded the two in my Mac. Really does not make a lot of difference. I did try the 4Gb first, and then the 8GB, and now the 16GB. No problems with any of them. Now I think I might expand with the dx517 to get the number of disks I need. My mac has three 8GB disks in Raid O, so I probably will do this as a Raid 5 for storing and backup. This is where the 2.5GB Ethernet might be nice, but then my backbone LAN would have to be, along with the router. And then all my computers and storage devices.
@NASCompares thanks for the video. I wonder why lower right corner of DSM GUI is covered, specifically why that part where memory is shown in small Resource Monitor widget?
Tbh it's almost always because mid video I had a notification for a personal email or chat pop up. I try to disable everything before a vid, but in my haste I might forget one. I probably still have the archive footage somewhere. What do you need to see and I can fire over a screen shot. Cheers
@@nascompares no worries, I was just curious why you would cover place where RAM is displayed in the video about that RAM... Thanks for the blog and videos
@@nascompares btw, quick question as I have good opportunity to get used DS718+ with 8GB RAM: my main usage will be for home backup, moments (2-3 users), no Plex at all, but 5-10 containers like HomeAssistent, Calibre, Unifi controller, some bookmarks and rss software.. IMO for this usage slightly higher performance ugrade that 720+ or 220+ would bring are not worth of higher price.. Does it sounds reasonable?
You can check his post with more details and a list of compatible RAM. Plus I guess you can help him by buying through one of the links at the bottom of the page. That's what I've done. nascompares.com/2019/05/09/synology-nas-unofficial-memory-upgrade-guide/
sorry if I'm going over old ground but have a question regarding 8GB crucial memory upgrades on a 920+ (couldn't see a video for the 920+ to comment on) On one of your recent site posts, you suggest a number of memory modules that will work - one of which you recommend single rank for 8GB.. Yet in another post, you state you should ONLY use Dual Rank memory as a single rank can cause issues. Is this only with the larger modules (which other users on Reddit are now seeing small issues with). Are you able to make this a bit clearer as you currently suggest either are fine but single is bad..>TIA
Same problem here. I got it through his link and it doesn't work. The only thing I can think of is that link takes you to the PC4-21300 when maybe it should be the PC4-2666 CT16G4SFS8266 that seems is no longer available. Maybe we have to check other brands or wait until the right one from Crucial gets back to production.
Luckily the seller accepted return of the crucial 16Gb memory. I've decided not to buy any additional 3rd party memory at the moment and wait until someone confirmed which one (8GB or 16 GB with the part number) is compatible.
i had problem wheni update the fan with an Noctua... i was using on my 718+ without any problem but with the 720+ the fan stop working and the 720+ beep..
Just upgraded my DS720+ with DDR4 KINGSTON Client Premier 2666MHz 16GB - KCP426SD8/16 with DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 3 version, working fine, with virtual machines I can make all memory consumed, no hiccups no visual defects in resource monitor, everything is working fine, hence it make sense to upgrade. Kingston KVR26S19D8/16 did NOT work!
NASCompares not so reliable after that. The crucial 16GB does not work with the DS720 +. Crucial Model: 16GB DDR4-2666 SODIMM CT16G4SFD8266. The device does not even turn on :(
I hope they move to AMD mobile systems or ARM soon and we get 64gb memory. All for the same price. Memory power consumption isn't going up a lot if the slots are not increasing. So 16gb or 64gb doesn't matter and it only costs $4/GB
16 GB does NOT work! Just tried to use "Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) DR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD8266". LED is flashing and NAS is not starting. Don't waste your money!

Same for me. But 360VR’s Samsung 8GB works. Also 4GB crucial works as well. But 16GB on nascompares website timetec does not work.
Does the device ACTUALLY use the memory over 10GB however or does it just see it and think it's using it? My guess is it sees the memory but isn't actually gaining any benefit over the 10GB limit.
It does, but many will try to surpass this and tests have shown the system using more than 8GB when pushed - however it is always worth remembering that the stability of this and the long term viability of this is very much not confirmed!!!!
@360VR nope. It didn't work. All that worked was DSM showing an "impossible to handle" amount of memory. In both videos, this one and the one you you showed a link for, there is no attempt to use an amount of memory above 6GB.
From what I have read the processor is working with a maximum of 8GB so why would I install 16GB into the slot? Its nice that the system is showing 16GB but the processor is not able to use it so whats the point?

I don't get it! It should work, Synologys one is also PC4-21300. Maybe Synology introduced recently a detector to block unnofficial RAM?

It will only use the 8GB anyway. according to the CPU in the 720 it only supports 8GB so even if you had 16 only 8 would be used apparantly
Does the device ACTUALLY use the memory over 10GB however or does it just see it and think it's using it? My guess is it sees the memory but isn't actually gaining any benefit over the 10GB limit.
could you elaborate a bit please? Where your guess is coming from? In a video VM tries to allocate 14GB of available 18GB, no?

Just start at 06.00 mins in for the start of the test. I don't know why he took 6 mins to say not much at all.
I'll never get those 15 minutes back. Do install a proper VM. Do proper test if the memory is being properly used. Do some proper videos.

cannot replace another 2gb ram?
the 2GB memory is soldered on the motherboard. It's not removable
The fact that Synology charge more than most is why people don't buy their memory.
save yourself 15 minutes, it does not work. you are welcome.
Thank you!
@360VR what are these "graphical inconsistencies" you mentioned? Could you be a bit more specific?
