    Twinkie is not being talked about enough here. Her singing and vocal arrangement is always so phenomenal. Her singing in ‘power’, ‘He’s worthy to be praised’ and ‘in him there’s no sorrow’ never fail to blow me away. A real gift.

    There’s just something so special about Mariah’s riffs & runs that just sets her apart from everybody else. It’s like they just fall out of her mouth almost like she doesn’t have to think about doing it, her voice just knows what to do.

      I would like to add that she's artistic with it. She doesn't run just to run; her agility aids in the communication of the song.

      Mariah = Magic. Her writing is *cheff's kiss* and yes, she sings like she just though of it and did it. It's insaaaane and amazing.

    • @shawnie2084

      To me most of her runs and riffs sound forced like a lot of mixed/ biracial singers, especially those who weren't raised around or with black people. Idk if it's because listening to black artists is how they connect/ reconnect with their blackness and so they try to emulate it in their singing voice and style. Like it's clear she didn't grow up singing in black churches or choirs because there's a certain/specific sound and technique used by them that's hard to duplicate in adulthood if you haven't been doing it since youth. It's especially clear to me when they are singing with or in this case compared side by side with them. On their own it works but her singing with Whitney for example is my least favorite song with her because it was natural for Nippy but sounded forced for her trying to sing in the same manner. Another example is when Marsha Ambrosious sang at the Black Girls Rock event one time she seemed out of her element and at first tried to keep up but to me it seems she eventually gave up because she knew it was a losing cause. This can also be true for fully black singers but I find it's the case most of with mixed or biracial ones.

    I think the style of the run is similar, but not the run itself… however, Stevie Wonder’s influence is definitely heard in Mariah’s music. I’ve always said that “Fourth of July” has a Stevie Wonder feel to it. The way she sings “Intimate Daze” “Thunder Clouds Hung Around So threateningly” “Showering” it’s all Stevie Wonder-esque. If he ever does a tribute song to her, this would be the song for him to do.

      2:13 - “they are using the same set of notes, and similar rhythms…despite none of the runs being identical.”

    • @kwaziness
      @kwaziness 6 месяцев назад +1

      the first three notes they all hit descend the same way, the root note first goes a whole step down and then 3 half-steps down (Mariah and Twinkie: C#-B-G#) (Stevie: G#-F#-D#)
      they all continue it differently but those three notes all have the same distances apart

    Your videos ROCK and are so informative, I like the shorter ones too and how specific you are. As a writer and vocalist I can easily go on piano and play the scales you're referring to in the respective keys you're referring to. It just breaks it down so well and makes it so much easier for us as new writers to be creative. Thank you

    You can hear how much Stevie and Aretha have always influenced MC. She never hesitates to give them praise. Even her arrangements borrow from Aretha, but because shes a musical genius in her own right she adds alot of who she is. There's always been something about the placement of Mariah's runs that I love. She super agile, but they always make sense. Not a single run feels forced or sloppy. I can't explain it but her runs never take away from the song. The placement is always so good.

    When I first heard that ‘Workin’ Hard’ run, I thought of VBA lol. But I hear it now.
    When I first heard Twinkie’s run, I immediately thought of Stevie.
    And this reminds me of the run Mariah did at the end of ‘Here We Go Around Again’, but that one reminds me of the one VBA did at the end of ‘Pressing On’. Love all these legends.
