      I don't think it's a skill that's valued widely nowadays. But history has a way of resurfacing the musical skills that are most important and rewarding/highlighting those that make it important. Just gotta give it some time in some ways - but in others we just have to mourn the loss.

      Great point! I also think runs can be a cheat / cop-out to avoid showing vocal weakness. As technical and impressive as runs can be, it’s just as tough if not tougher to hit a note straight on and sustain it with resonance, vibrato, and control.
      When I’m singing and having an off day, it’s easier to do a run up to or down from to hit a note I’m going for as opposed to holding a note that might cause strain or just completely go off key or worst not hit the note at all. 😅

    Her early years were so signature for her pure and thicker vocals. She wasn't doing a lot yet but it didn't lack the meat and potatoes. A flat foot singer with soul and intelligence. She knew what her voice can do in the moment. She studied gospel/blues notes and scales very well without too much aggression. Her growls and squalls came in for color, not for presentation.

      @@oneilgerald her mother Patricia was an opera singer and Mariah grew up listening to her mother vocalise. Her technique just seems classical to me, open throat, raise soft palate, high cheek bones. My voice teacher used to always say “make the mold, pour the gold”. Her breath control, vibrato & vowel manipulation- the bel canto way of singing is central to Mariah’s voice yet she’s used those tools to break every rule possible in that book. True virtuoso. I wonder what Mariah’s IQ is, she is a genius musician either way.

    • @TalvanePorfirio
      @TalvanePorfirio 3 месяца назад +8

      That's her natural voice: dark and lower. The girlie tone of the Daydream era was artificially done. And I don't hear any classical trait in her approach tbh.

    • @joshuavidad6025
      @joshuavidad6025 3 месяца назад +5

      @@TalvanePorfirio While I agree with her having no any classical trait, it is because she was actually never trained or had gotten any classical training. Even though her mother as an opera vocalist have never really trained her but just the basics like hums and warmups etc. Her "dark" and much thickness she had in her earlier years esp in her debut was because it was only around after she stopped her habit of smoking. Technique-wise, she was doing tongue retraction just like how Whitney's belts to darken timbre, and she barely does mixed voice. Her voice has been, through the years, have been gaining obviously gaining "lighter" due to her approaching more on doing mixed voice that's why her high belts/upper range was more consistent and grounded which was very apparent during Music Box and she just kept improving having her habit of squeezing, tongue retraction, depressed larynx, etc. away because she was actually getting vocal coaching since 1992 . Her voice has always been bright and light, and of course, her nodules that made her voice very inconsistent.

    Great video! Her voice here is definitely brighter than after Emancipation, but she actually had a darker tone in the beginning than a couple years later during Merry Christmas and Daydream, and she used a way chestier mix here. Very interested to see what you think of her changes in tone, besides differences in quality. Its not just her mix, everything about the instrument became lighter. It became heavier again during Butterfly but then immediately lighter again during Charmbracelet. Nobodies voice changed so many times, so drastically, so fast, and not just in a linear direction, which is the strangest thing, but also a reason I love her

    12:02 When AC and Gospel music died in mainstream so did a lot of melodic singing….. people use vocal acrobats to carry a song now mostly because the beat is so distracting nowadays… that you need something to cover it 😭

      It's DEFINITELY a different time in music. It's ironic because you'd think with gospel being so decorative in nature that the lack of influence there would strip singers of their improvisation skills. And it HAS happened on the side of melodic integrity AND improvisation. It's like the entire scope of vocal capability has diminished, which is sad to me! 😔

      @@oneilgeraldas much as I agree with you in many ways, I do think this is kind of an old fashioned take (and I’m an old fashioned guy, I listen to mostly 70s-90s stuff), but there are plenty of people that are still in that gospel-r&b-pop realm like Tori Kelly, Jazmine Sullivan. Even more alt r&b like Chloe and Halle are very melodic and intentional with how they vocalize. And there are gospel artists still out there making music.
      I do agree that it’s diminished in comparison to what it was before, and that is sad to me. But, like with anything, you can find what you’re looking for if one wants to see it.

Her voice is back and stronger than ever. After you have kids it changes the register of your voice but she is still “the voice” even with the change in register, she is one of the greatest still.

    I think she's a colorutura soprano, but the nodules have hindered the vocal chords closure & give her the smoky timbre (& easy access to the whistle).
    Her vocal colour, agility & support blossom beyond Eb5, which separates a mezzo from a soprano, with ease to access those F#5 belts. She once did sing at C#6 sustained head voice with vibrato, although it lacked full connection.
    A true mezzo would be someone like Barbara Streisand & Beyoncé. Ms Streisand could & still can belt up to G5 & B5 without dropping support because she's got supreme techniques, not naturally being a soprano.
    A contralto would be someone like Toni Braxton whose speaking voice is actually brighter than expected.

      It's funny. I actually often stay away from vocal fachs due to pop music being so different of a technique makeup. (We need a different system.) But Mariah's tonal shifts as she goes up in her belts are the clear give away that her voice is a higher build. It's also interesting to see how different factors have masked Mariah's true tone and capabilities over the years! Thanks for the insight! 🥰

      Technically alto is a role in a choir, not a voice type so really she'd be a mezzo-soprano. I'd say a high mezzo because though she rarely belts and holds notes above F#5 WITH vibrato which most soprano's do comfortably, we've seen through out her career that she does have a bright tone and her voice does soar when it gets higher. Her calling herself an alto mainly shows she doesn't care for technical terms lol.
