    I share my accutane before and after photos and talk about the side effects I experienced while I was taking accutane over a 6 month period. Exactly one year ago I began taking isotretinoin/accutane for a rare inflammatory condition I developed on my cheeks, which was likely related to a rare form of rosacea. Although the side effects from accutane were a challenge to get through, I'm still happy I decided to treat my inflammatory condition with accutane and I wish anyone suffering with any skin-related conditions like severe acne or rosacea the very best with whatever they choose to do. 💖
    My accutane dose over the course of 6 months to treat my severe rosacea was:
    Month 1: 20mg isotretinoin
    Month 2: 40mg isotretinoin
    Month 3: 40mg isotretinoin
    Month 4: 60mg isotretinoin
    Month 5: 60mg isotretinoin
    Month 6: 60mg isotretinoin

      Big thumbs up! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! for sharing your story.
      We have the EXACT same pattern of rosacea on our faces. Like yours, mine extends on the cheeks from just below the eye sockets to the jawline. Same exact redness, dryness, spottiness, and bursting pustules. I've tried everything so far: antibiotics calmed it a bit but gave me serious stomach cramps; metronidazole had no noticeable effect; azelaic acid made my skin itchier but otherwise no effect; 10 rounds of v-beam laser and the effect was like a miracle the first week but always came back within two weeks. I have since become a hermit and basically avoid all social functions because (as you mentioned) this can't be covered with makeup in any convincing way. This rosacea happened almost overnight after turning 41. I went from a perfect, even complexion, to swamp thing in about 8 months. It has completely destroyed my self esteem.
      I just got 20 mg of accutane and started today. I was looking for something encouraging on the Internet to calm my nerves and make sure I made the right decision. Your video has been a lifesaver! Thank you so much for sharing your photos and being open about your condition. You have helped more people than you realize!! Seriously, your results are amazing! I have hope again. Take care of yourself and god bless.

      Katie Scanlan After watching several RUclips videos I can say that your story perfectly describes what happened to me ( blush, followed by small bumps that later turned into pimples). The only difference is that I had a terrible breakout in my forehead and temples, and a milder breakout in my cheeks. I’m currently taking accutane and that definitely helped a lot, but I wonder how much was your weight while on the treatment. Thank you so much for sharing your story, I can’t believe how similar your case is to mine.

    Love your video, thank you! I took accutane this past Feb-Aug, and I was up to 80mg a day. I had severe cystic acne, and now I have clear skin! Everything you said in your video in regards to emotions you went through as well as symptoms, is exactly what I went through. Sometimes all it takes is another person to say "I went through this too, and you know what: it sucks." Because it does suck and it's 100% not fair. Even with clear skin I find myself looking up videos on RUclips about this, it's a journey only some will understand and I feel like it will always be a part of me. Sorry for rambling, but just wanted to say thank you for all the people this video will help! You have a beautiful soul. xx Kady

    Hell yeah! I am going through a terrible breakout right now, I do not have as many cysts as I usually do, but I have so many pimples all over my face. It's terrible. But I as well am not wearing makeup on it because like you said, that is basically my truth and me and I do not want to cover it up and I know it will get better during and after accutane, and I also think that It would most likely get worse with makeup on. But I love how you said that.
    I also don't feel beautiful, like you said before you started on accutane, I feel terrible and I feel like I look like i have a disease and I feel like others might think the same. But I am just waiting until I can start accutane at the beginning of December so I can get thru with this!

    Hey!! Such an inspiring video. You look awesome!! Even I was going through that worse phase of acne and had tried everything I could. Took hell lot of antibiotics and vitamins, etc but was reluctant to take Isotretinoin.
    Ultimately I decided to go on Isotretinoin but just before that I had to travel to Germany for a few months and someone adviced me to Use Sebamed Face wash and Sevamed Clear Face Care Gel. It has worked wonders for me. I still have acne but it has reduced to almost 90%
    If they reoccur I'll take Isotretinoin this time because I don't want to go through that Trauma once again.
    Also, from my past experience I can say that ultimately your scarring will definitely go away. By scarring I mean the red marks not the Ice Pick Scars. Just be positive.
    Thankfully I dont have Ice pick scars :)
    Thanks a lot for this video. Only people who have gone through this will understand the emotions and low self esteem which we go through during this idiotic ailment.

    I'm pretty sure you had rosacea fulminans. I went back to the dermatologist yesterday after being very dissatisfied with an appointment with a PA at their practice 2 weeks ago. I asked to be put on accutane then but she wouldn't listen to me and put me on 25mg of spiranolactone and financea foam. I had 2 dermatologists look at me yesterday and the more senior doctor told me that this is a very rare condition. I couldn't find any RUclips videos on rosacea fulminans so I will make my own, but just thought you might want to know the name of what you had.

    • @KatieScanlan
      @KatieScanlan  7 лет назад +2

      The best thing you can do while on accutane to ease your discomfort and side effects is to stay very well hydrated. Aside from that, I would say using a very gentle moisturizer like CeraVe was really the only thing I applied to my face. If you're going to be in the sun for any reason, then sunscreen is also important. I also went through lip balm like crazy and used coconut oil for keeping the rest of my body hydrated. It's an intense ride being on it, but just know that it's not forever. Good luck! 😊

      You're so welcome Sharon! Stay hydrated and be sure to eat a lot of healthy fats which can help with that. I so hope you don't have the same pain, but I was told it's a rare side-effect if that helps any! 😊

      Sharon ask your dermatologist about taking fish oil, it's something I wish I looked into because I had joint pain and I am a weightlifter. I just dealt with the pain but in hind sight I would ask if you are able to take fish oil or glucosamine for you joints. Good luck and it will be over soon enough!

    I just found your video and i love how informative it is and how detail you are in explaining everything. And i love love love the fact that you reply to almost every comment. i think you are extremely beautiful and i know how horrible it is not to be able to be confident because of acne and skin problems. I'm currently on Accutance for the 2nd time now, i had my first about 3 years ago. i forgot all of my experience with it the 1st time, i wish i had documented it, :< But this time i dont have super bad acne so im only on 20mg for 3 months. I wonder when did you start to see the results and were the dry lips that bad? I hope if possible i can ask you some more question through email or something... thank you so much

    • @KatieScanlan
      @KatieScanlan  7 лет назад

      Hi Huyen! Thanks for your sweet words! 😊 Sorry to hear you have to go back on Accutane. I started seeing really noticeable results after about 2 months. The dry lips were pretty bad but only after my dosage was increased to 40mg. So at 20mg, you shouldn't notice too much discomfort. Just get a few good chapsticks and drink lots of hydrating fluids and you'll get through it. I hope that helps!

      Katie Scanlan thank you for replying and your kind words. :) may i ask did it help with uneven skintone, hyperpigmentation or scars?

    • @KatieScanlan
      @KatieScanlan  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you! 😊 My experience has been that hyperpigmentation does fade very slowly over time, but it's gradual. I have some scarring still and it's been almost 2 years now and even that has been fading over time. I just found it easier to get used to the way my skin is now and embrace it. There's a lot of peace that comes with that. 💖✨

      I ate and still eat a pretty balanced diet. Lots of fruit and veggies, healthy fats were also very helpful during the treatment for internal dryness, and I loved drinking hibiscus/rose hip tea. It's very detoxifying and amazing for the liver which is a bit taxed on the medicine. It was nice to have herbal teas with honey especially because you can have them hot or cold and it was a nice break from just water 24/7.

    • @KatieScanlan
      @KatieScanlan  7 лет назад +2

      Great question! Women have the extra challenge of worrying about birth control while taking accutane because pregnancy is definitely NOT an option while on this medication. I happened to already have a hormonal IUD (Mirena) so that was something I didn't have to worry about, but many women choose to go on birth control pills while on accutane if they're not already on them. Since doctors usually recommend that two contraception methods are used while on accutane to avoid accidental pregnancies during the treatment, birth control pills are a popular option. I hope that helps! 🐵

    Hi thx for your review. Your acne condition is exactly the same as I am suffering at the moment, I am taking 20mg at the beginning now then 30mg the second month but it doesn't change much:( better than before but still very disgusting, and I know if I don't continually taking higher mg this won't get better but I am so worried that after taking this medicine it won't give me much changes but make me have other serious side effects in the future

    • @KatieScanlan
      @KatieScanlan  7 лет назад +2

      You're welcome! The most frustrating part of accutane besides the side effects is waiting for the results to happen. It takes a lot of patience but I promise you will begin to see improvements each month you continue. I've been off of it for almost a year now and I have no serious side effects from taking accutane. Just healthy skin, so I encourage you to continue your treatment and keep a positive outlook as hard as it is. I'm sure you'll be glad you did! Good luck! 😊

      Mainly I used the moisturizer provided in the Accutane care kit my dermatologist gave me, which was called CeraVe for my face. For the rest of my body and scalp I used coconut oil. I also used Visine for my dry eyes and a ton of different natural lip balms (I think I went through 10 in 6 months!) Hope that helps! :)

      @KatieScanlan  7 лет назад +6

      My dermatologist assured me there was no serious long-term side effects from accutane, and after a year and a half I can say I have had no issues. But of course, there are always rare exceptions with any type of medication, especially something as intense as accutane, so everyone should evaluate the pros and cons for themselves with their doctor.

    • @KatieScanlan
      @KatieScanlan  7 лет назад +2

      I tried not to take too many other things like Tylenol or Advil because Accutane is so hard on the liver in high doses so instead I did very slow gentle stretches for the low back which helped a little bit and basically kept counting down the days till I was finished. It went away fairly quickly after I finished taking it, within a week so at least there's that! :)

    • @KatieScanlan
      @KatieScanlan  7 лет назад +3

      As my dose increased, I found my moodiness increased as well (angry, short tempered, sad, crying spells). The side effects are tough to get through so I'm not sure if the drugs cause moods swings or if it's just the process of going through this. Either way, everything improved once I stopped the medication!

    My dermatologist said that Accutane is out of your system after 30 days of being off of it at the end of the treatment, but how long was it until your skin went back to normal in its normal thickness and sensitivity? or did your skin still feel sensitive to the sun or anything rubbing against it? Did these side effects go away right after you stopped taking it or do you still have side effects after stopping accutane?

    • @KatieScanlan
      @KatieScanlan  7 лет назад +2

      It is out of your system fairly quickly, so the dryness and bad side effects all went away pretty quickly within a week. But because it thins your skin so much depending on your dose and length of treatment (mine was a heavy dose and 6 full months) my dermatologist said 6 months for my skin to thicken back up to normal. So because of that, no body piercings, tattoos, or unprotected skin in the sun. A year later I find I still have some mild sun sensitivity but otherwise nothing major. :)

      Hello there, i was on 20mg daily accutane for papulo pustular rosacea and it works amazing! I was clear 100% but then i relapse (maybe my cumulative dose was too low) now im taking 20mg every 3 or 4 days currently (3 months). My skin is improving, i have some breakouts sometimes specially when i lifting heavy weights or when i stress alot or my diet was shittie. I have to tell you this my derm and few forum derms told me that i need to take isotretinoin for life because rosacea is chronic. When you take baby dosis like mine 20mg twice weekly you will se improvements slowly but it is safe, forget about liver, kidney problems, super dry skin, depression, etc. Those side effects only appears in high dose, there are many many people that consume this "maintenance dose" for life. There is also a well known dermatologist who take it like this. Ask you doctor about this maintenance dose before taken it this way. Sorry for my english
