Isotretinoin Accutane

  • Isotretinoin originally marketed as Accutane should be limited to those with severe nodular or cystic acne unresponsive to traditional therapy with topical agents and oral antibiotics. Due to an enormous number of lawsuits, Accutane has not be available for over a decade. Substitutes include Claravis, Absorica and Amnesteem.
Isotretinoin is available only through the iPLEDGE program which requires reading and signing an informed consent form. This program was developed by the drug manufacturers in response to pressure from many organizations to remove isotretinoin from the market. The central issue involved an enormous incidence of birth defects associated with even limited exposure in pregnant women.
Two negative pregnancy tests and acceptable contraception are required from one month before isotretinoin to after therapy in fertile women. Monthly blood tests are required although one study takes exception this.
In 2005 the FDA issued an alert to consumers regarding an association of isotretinoin with depression and suicidal thoughts. Currently dermatologists cite studies exonerating isotretinoin in this regard while psychiatrists still believe a link exists. Isotretinoin may decrease metabolism of the frontal cortex and decrease availability of serotonin. It may also reduce neurogenesis in the hippocampal region of the brain.
Isotretinoin may clear acne in just one 15-20 week course of therapy. Side effects trouble almost everyone during therapy. Isotretinoin reduces bone density perhaps permanently and may predispose to osteoporosis.

There is such a thing as accutane. I live in Canada and we still have it under the name Roche Accutane. I didnt have to sign anything or do any paperwork to start taking it, and a month's supply of accutane cost me $9. I am so thankful for our healthcare system.

I took Accutane in 2008 for 5 months in total. I have not had a single pimple since. The side effects were rough during treatment and I had to buy Aquaphor to spread inside my nose and constantly apply eye drops since it dried everything out. But I thankfully dodged any long-term side effects. In terms of permanently ridding acne, it is a miracle drug. I remember I had to take this questionnaire each month at the pharmacy and the dermatologist wanted monthly blood tests to check my liver. It was intense how tightly regulated this was and it is not even a controlled drug. I also lucked up in that my insurance covered all 5 months.

Not true. I thought the same but I watched an accutane video from a black lady in Atlanta Us. She payed 100% out of pocket $40/month for it. I pay privately in the Uk £69.99/month for generic isotretinoin, sure it would be £10/month on the NHs but I’m comparing like for like what I pay and what the lady in Atlanta pay privately and it’s cheap in America. The only difference is I guess that I can’t my blood test free and they need to pay for theirs

In one month of isotretinoin therapy I developed wrinkles. I'm alredy dishydratated by a psichiatric cure with litium. Today I've interrupted iso because I was worried by the wrinkles. Will my skin be oily again? After I didn't want that but now I realize I was lucky! Oily skins have less wrinkles. Please give me this answer: I'd like to understand If my glands have get smaller forever in one month therapy. I know you aren't a doctor but try to help me please...thank u

If I were you, I would stop. I took acutane in 1998 or 1999. It caused dry lips, but I did not notice wrinkles.
In case you did not catch it, acutane is a synthetic version of Retinol (Vitamin A). What does that mean, you ask? It means that if you just consume Vitamin A daily, your acne should improve.
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin found only in animal fats like beef tallow, lard, chicken fat and butter, not plant oils.
Replace your plant oils with those fats and start cooking with them and your acne and wrinkles should clear up, and you will loose weight as well. You will be healthier than you have ever been.

@@willgallaher501nobody said it doesn’t potentially. But when the patients, feel life isn’t worth living with it. The benefits will always outweigh the risks. Though I agree it’s given out like candy too often. I’m 29, only just been prescribed it after horrific cystic acne for 17 years and trying every medication known to man to help it, I can’t wear just a T-shirt in the summer because it gets covered in blood when the cysts burst. The back and sides of my neck have terrible scars that look like I’ve had acid thrown at me, the same with my back and chest. My face has deep gouges in it. I also can’t sleep on my back because of the pain. I have been unable to shave since I was 17 because I get lots of cysts in my beard area and any friction there such as even washing my face flares me up never mind shaving. I’ve never been to a club, a beach, had a partner, I haven’t left my house for 4 years, Etc. sorry for my life story, but I think we can agree that I’m entitled to be prescribed this medication and regardless of what may happen in the future with side effects it’s unlikely I’ll be in a worse position than I’m in now. There’s a place for accutane and that place is the last resort people like me rely on. But as I said before I’ll repeat myself, giving it to these teenage girls who have had some hormonal acne for a year or 2 feels wrong. ( more than anything because it doesn’t even help hormonal acne)

I am 16 years old, 1.60m tall and have severe acne for which isotretinoin treatment was recommended. However, I have read that this drug blocks growth and since I do not want to stay fixed at 1.60 I am worried. Is this true? I have also been growing visibly lately and I would not want to stop this growth. My short stature could cause me even more discomfort than acne scars. What do you recommend?
