I like how Inigo handed his opponent his sword so he can check it out, and his opponent HANDED it back after complimenting it. Very nice gesture between two honorable men.

There was a time when such honor was Common - among MEN - Real Men, anyway. If you believe in yourself, and know you are capable you have no need to cheat. Today's weal, immoral "people" cannot imagine it and think it is a fantasy. To take advantage of anyone, even an enemy, when it was unnecessary, was dishonorable less than 100 years ago. (And yes, there have always been a few dishonorable men - and they usually got theirs, in return, especially if it became known. Montoya could have killed The Man in Black at any time as he helped him up the cliff - so it would only be natural to behave properly in the face of such a natural, honorable Man. Respect between two gentlemen. Chivalry, like morality, is rare today - but it still exists among superior Men.

You get a little extra depth from the book (the one this movie was based off of, not the original), with a glimpse into how amazing Inigo and Wesley really were with the sword.
The story goes that when he was able to wield a blade easier, Inigo studied tirelessly under many great masters of the sword, learning everything he could for years and years. When he thought he had learned everything he could, he returned to his original master and performed what he learned before him, imagining himself in a duel to the death with Count Rugen (The 6-fingered Man). His master watched without saying anything. After much time had passed, finally Inigo stopped, and waited to hear his master's thoughts. Many silent moments passed.
Finally his master spoke "You know there is a level of swordsmanship beyond that of a Master? There was a man I once had the honor of seeing, his skills were at this next level, and he was known as the only Wizard of the blade in our time. His talent was such that you would only see every hundred years or so. If you were to fight this man today, you would not defeat him." Inigo was crestfallen. "--But...neither would he be able to defeat you." Inigo knew, with these words, that he was ready to seek out the target of his revenge, and so with thanks to his master, he left.
Something like that. Inigo was a rare Wizard, and yet through desperation and love and sheer force of will Wesley had become even greater with the blade than he.
I thought that was a nice touch.

Books are always better than movies, even when the author writes the screenplay! I think I would actually enjoy a movie that stays close to the original book, but probably most people wouldn’t, which is why it’s never done.

in my heart Iñigo Montoya was the real hero in this film.
EDIT: Iñigo´s story of revenge is very captivating, and everyone usually focus on it from this scene, but the greatness behind this interaction has nothing to do with that. his role in the film was that of a mere henchman, hired to stop our hero, but Iñigo´s human quality transcend the character´s very role, even before joining forces with the hero, and that made him a memorable character, by any standars especially in a film from so long ago.

I could talk about it for hours, but this is a talk I'd rather have with someone face to face. Leaving a comment here with the description of all of these meanings within this scene, is just a waste and it doesn't honor the art of it.
