I’m Samoan and you hit the nail on the head. Colonization and our genetics definitely play a huge role in why PI health is where it is now. But I think it can be changed but that has to come from changing the mindset and the food culture of the islands. It only took 50ish years for us to get to the state where we are now, and we can reverse course only if the people are willing to do so.

Hi Joe, great video. I am a kuki (cook islander) and you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Western food has made obesity sky rocket in Rarotonga. You would have noticed when ordering fast food that the potion sizes were very generous as well, which worsens the problem. Our traditional food is still very much alive in raro but a lot of it is not necessarily healthy either, with majority of it containing a lot of high fat ingredients like coconut cream. I’m not sure if you were aware but the Cook Islands do have a sugar tax on all soft drinks like coke, sprite, Fanta etc. So water should definitely not be more expensive.

But I have to admit, that Joe Fazer's video are quite entertaining. So his videos stand well on their own, or could make great intros to more in-depth and detailed videos as to why these basic facts are true and what is being done to correct them or expand their use, depending on whether the "discovered" fact is a good one or a bad one for people in general.

Considering the isolation of the island, its also limitations on food supply. Most food is imported from New Zealand, so Rarotonga is reliant on what NZ can supply. Fresh produce is currently limited in NZ due to extreme weather events, so what gets to Raro is also limited. It is the long lasting foods (canned goods, processed foods etc) that can always be sent to the islands and are affordable.

Hi, I’m Polynesian (from Tahiti, French Polynesia) and as someone else pointed out colonization has a lot do to in it plus our genetics (I’m far from being overweight but my parents are and most of my family are) the thing is: we can’t even fish easily as before in Tahiti because beaches are becoming private properties and we can’t make canoe like before so we need to buy a boat. Then we need to buy all the tools to fish. Tahiti is the most expensive place of France (because yes, we are a group of hundreds islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean but we our nationality is French) everything is very expensive ( a pack of 4 yogurts is around 25-30$ US ) and somehow local foods are also crazily expensive. Fish are expensive, taro, uru, etc…
So people tend to buy cheaper foods : burgers at McDonald, bread, pasta, mayonnese

    • @stickynotes2040

Damn, that's so sad! I feel awful for what colonization has done to so many countries. :(
And that's insanity that a pack of yogurts is 30$ US?! Do only rich people buy yogurts there?
I'd imagine if there was more infastructure going to producing local foods instead of exports regular prices would go wayy down. I hope that issue will get solved soon.

Hey @Joe Fazer, Great video and superb edit. Love that you made it both personal and informative.
The ending however left me a bit hungry for more. Usually when looking at problems and issues around the world, it is useful to paint a picture and look at the root of the matter. But, I would also suggest that looking at the various ways that these problems are being fixed, or could hypothetically be tended to now or in the future, it can also be a great way to expand on the already existing content, make a few of your new subscribers happy and keep them coming back your way.

Hey Joe, as a New Zealander, I can say that even many people (and not just polynesians) living in New Zealand are quite obese. 1/8 of the kids here are obese. And especially if you travel to lower socio-economic neighbourhoods, you can see many, many fast food joints, small takeaway shops, fish and chip shops etc. And I think for them, not having as much money as they would like, it's just easier to get cheaper, quick, albeit oily, fatty and unhealthy foods rather than sitting down at a nice restaurant or buying quality ingredients. It's quite sad to see the situation, but this is what it is.

People don't eat takeaways all the time because its cheaper, they do it because of laziness. let's be real here.

Both an entertaining and informational video! Just thought I’d let you know that New Zealand was colonised by the British in the 1800’s causing the indigenous people (Māori) to experience a similar phenomenon. The diet (and ways of getting food) become heavily influenced by the western world. This has caused on-going ill-health for many Māori people, and they’re over-represented in statistics such as obesity. So I’d say New Zealand has become westernised too; and it’s sad to see that New Zealand’s colonialism has not only impacted the native people of New Zealand but also influenced other countries such as the Cook Islands.

There are exceptions to this, like me and my boyfriend who are thin and lean built, but most of the time I find a lot of other Pacific Islanders are in the same boat. It could be a result of our migratory history from South East Asia, to the Pacific Islands, and the long distances our ancestors had to travel by catamaran. I’m hoping that the obesity rate will drop drastically with people cooking more at home now, and with the renewed understanding and appreciation of regenerative farming. It’s disrespectful to take and post videos of people, especially when you are labeling your video “the fattest country in the world." So insensitive. You also probably did not ask any of these people for their consent to be put on your HUGE platform. Not to mention, half the people you were videoing are TOURISTS. They are not from the Cook Islands and do not live here. Rarotonga is so small, everybody knows everybody. You were also choosing to only interview and film people who were visibly overweight rather than having a variety of perspectives, lowkey making it out that there are ONLY overweight people here.
You also labeled it the “Cook Islands” when you were only in RAROTONGA, which is only ONE of FIFTEEN islands in the Cook Islands. If you were to actually travel to our other islands you would understand that the majority of our islands are still living off of natural resources.

Exactly this! Not to mention he ONLY filmed our fast food places & completely ignored our small business’s & our many fresh produce stalls located all around the island. How shameful, hope you never come back.

did u not think maybe he asked them for permission before he filmed it? i'm sure he would let them know its for his youtube channel before he started it all also why would he go to the other island when his title literally says "fattest" that is the keyword for the video keyword here is fattest which is the aim of the video to show the obese side of the story. He gave u guys what it says on the video yet u still complain. Sometimes when they clickbait then people complain too i mean come on wow people are never pleased
