yeah but don't discount the influence of diet, exercise, nutrition, diseases, etc. In the 1870s, the average British man was 5'5 but by the 1970s, it was 5'10.
The calorie density of diet has no influence on height unless in a severe deficit or deficient in certain vitamins or minerals which an entire country or continent is likely not in. It is all genetic. South Asia is built up of many islands. Thousands of years ago when the first settlers arrived, there wasn't enough food to support their large body mass, so the taller, larger ones died out, and the shorter, smaller ones survived as they needed less calories to survive so over time the population height decreased. Studied this in my Biology degree recently so just thought i would clear it up but great video otherwise!
Diet does have an influence. You will learn later on in life that what you learn in High School and College can sometimes be incorrect. My nutrition class in college 10 years ago claimed canola oil was good for your health. Canola oil is one of the worst things for your health btw.
Diet has no influence in height unless you are malnutritioned or deficient in certain compounds, otherwise it is all genetic. I am in my 3rd year of a bachelors degree of biology :)@@Monkofthecaribbean
what about countries like South Korea, where on average, the younger generations are significantly taller than their previous? nutrion must play a big part there.
Bro you're such a great motivator. Thanks to your videos I started working really hard on my body and even trying to film my workouts to become an influencer too. Keep it up man.
From my observation as a Southeast Asian resident, especially in Indonesia, which ranks among the top 10 shortest countries with an average height of only 158 cm, it is likely similar to Laos. I'm not familiar with Laos, but based on what I've observed in my country, the younger generation now receives more balanced nutrition, resulting in heights ranging from 168 to even 180 cm. I myself have a height of 175 cm, born to a father who is 165 cm tall and a mother who is 155 cm tall. I can conclude that due to globalization, our diets have become more universal and sometimes influenced by Western trends. Listening to stories from my grandmother, who only ate rice, vegetables, and cassava every day and had a height of only 150 cm, I am confident that this is 80% due to diet. However, they were not entirely lacking in food; they simply did not prioritize meat, milk, etc., likely because the warm climate is conducive to year-round cultivation, reducing the need for meat to fill their stomachs. Additionally, meat processing in the past was more complicated and expensive.
Diet + Genetics. Genetics is the natural limit set by your parents, and diet is the limiter to that limit. Even genetics may change over the course of a few generations if selection favors tall people, not to say there’s anything wrong with being small in a modern setting given how I myself am 5’7”.
Laos is also the country most bombed by the USA 🇺🇸….something tells me that had something to do with the poverty and knock on effects including general height of the population.
I was born in 1971 and the height is 165 cm, it is true that diet for most of people in Indonesia is carbo. My sons were born in 1998 and 2002 and I change the diet for my kids with a lot of protein and more calcium and then the result is the older height is 171 cm and the youngest is 178 cm : Btw my wife height is only 158 cm 😁 and I hope my grand son/daughter will get growth higher
I’m 5’6. Even strangers would look at me weirdly if I consider myself short. Seems like you’ve had one of the best times of your life. Couldn’t be more jealous of you.
I was born in the Philippines, and they have some of the shortest height averages in the world as well. Last time I went, I stuck out like a sore thumb every single place I went to. I spent a bit more than a month to visit family and I spotted maybe 10 people total that were taller than me and I was only 5’11 that time.
I'm a Filipino and I can relate to your situation. Although I'm shorter than you at 5'6.5 - 5'7, I am still taller than the average male Joe here in the Philippines. Went to church last Saturday and I was taller than 70% of the people who attended the mass. Crazy stuff fr HAHAHAH.
@@KyleNamiteVlogsThe mass might have been full of old people. There are noticeable differences in the average height between different generations in the PH. The younger ones are now usually taller than the older ones. I'm 20 and 5'10. Although still taller than average, the height difference between mine and most men around my age isn't that far.
As a Filipino guy I kinda feel them, though I am 5'6" which is slightly above average for men. Among my pinoy guy friends, I'm either the short guy or the average guy
The avarage height for men in PH is now 5'5. Many young Filipinos are now even between 5'5-5'7. Even for women, many of them are now at least 5' or above. Still short compared to the rest of the world but there is some progress nevertheless lol
@hayabusa1329 well roughly half will always be below averagr ...so that is normal. People think that most people will be above the average ...they won't.
I'm an average height Polish guy 178cm and here in New York I regularly encounter Filipino, Laotian, Viet, Chinese and Indian guys who are all around my height. It seems like most Asians here are far taller than their eastern counterparts
178 is a decent height. Not too tall not too short JUST RIGHT. The taller the more likely you will have health issues later in life. Cancer becomes far far more common.
Nutrition makes a huge difference. More than a decade ago, I was right at the average height for males in Vietnam and a decade later, I was shorter than the male average by a whole 10cm. The people you saw in the market are Vietnamese if I'm not mistaken so you need to look elsewhere for Laotian.
I know Joe wasn't necessarily saying this in the video but not all people in Laos have stunted growth, but rather there wasn't an evolutionary advantage to be tall if it just meant u needed more of that good food to support you, therefore shorter genetics won out with the lower food supply. Meaning if you brought a kid from Laos and raised them somewhere else, they wouldn't grow taller.
I will agree with the first comment here. All my cousins are short but my mom got posted on a farming land where beans, poultry, diary and meat where abundant so we grew up eating all the necessary food. My brother is 6'0,my sister 5'5 and I am 5'6. My cousins on other hand (from both my parents sides) are around 5'7 (men) and 5'3 (women).
Laos people are not short due to nutrition, i have lao classmates in high school and college, who are born in america and ate a american diet, and the men still hovered around 5'2, the women around 4'9. It goes the same with american born kids whos parents are from india, china, vietnam, etc. Even with a american diet, they still averaged their countries height. Im born in america and parents from southern china, and im 5'6.
Ok, but it is also the case that the heights of people in Asian countries like Japan, Korea and China are increasing due to better nutrition. And Dutch people used to be much shorter a century ago. Shorter too than Americans half a century ago.
Well it depends, I’ve run into a lot of oversea Chinese students at uni, and some of them are quite tall, a selective few must be 195+cm tall. On average I would say most Chinese guys I’ve come across are around 173-5cm on avg which is not too shabby.
A topic I’m very interested in and yes, diet is a huge factor. My brother is about 172cm and I’m 187cm. He hated vegetables and sport and I had plenty of both. Genetics are the biggest factor though, your born with a certain height range and depending on what you do during 2 growth windows (ages 3-5 and during early puberty) will determine whether you reach your maximum or minimum adult height range.
well think about how tall your ancestors are, you can't just blame him as if Vegetables were key for growth, there's always some variety with genes and u got lucky
@@lorenzospitaleri It was a totally different lifestyle that we led. Not only did I eat much better, but I constantly played sports from when I was old enough to walk where my brother just played video games. Both genetics and lifestyle are a factor, with the general belief being that genetics gives you a height range and your lifestyle will determine where in that height range you fall.
He reason was probably natural selection due to the climate. Shorter and more compact in general is great for wet tropical environment: less surface area/volume means less water on your body. Similar argument for certain African populations: tall and slim helps to dissipate body heat more efficiently. For Europeans, their look has to do with the cold. I remember watching a more detailed video about it, if I find it I'll link it here. I just find the food argument very week especially in modern days.
Food effects epigenetics over generations. As an example AASI Hunter Gatherers (an ancient South Asian population) had 6"1 + males and females on an average according to archeological evidence. But modern day South Asians are generally short arouns 5'5 on an average due to grain based, carb-based diet with least meat, along with many having famine-selected genes. Similarly, Dutch were once among short people of Eurasia . But within 2 centuries they have made immense changes to diet and become the tallest in the world.
Also your statement also may have some truth in it. Because homo florensis also called hobbit man, was found in Southeast Asia. Limited resources may have enfirced natural selection for smaller people
As a half Croat half Serb I was in Italy a few times on my way to or from Switzerland. The deeper South in Italy the crazier it was to witness how much shorter the people were on avg.
This reminds me of the time when my friend Mike went from the UK to Indonesia for work but his suitcase ended up in Australia. Could he find any clothes in Indonesia that fitted him? No! Apparently the jackets he could find only came halfway down his forearms and the trousers only went halfway down his shins.
The Netherlands went from the shortest country in mid 1900’s to the current tallest. A lot of the older dutch people were very short for some unbeknown reason to me.
Go pretty much anywhere is S E Asia and you will feel tall, I'm just a smidge over 6 foot and when I was in Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia I felt massive.
@@MaalikFaun Yes, I'm measured my self to be 5'11 at morning and the average height for Thai men is 5'7 (even higher for younger generations) so being 5'11 in Thailand wouldn't considered me a giant but taller than 90% of male. but hey, height is also depends on area like, in school area i've met couples of people being my height or taller but outside the school i rarely sees taller one, but the differences between me and most people aren't that big (like 2-4 inches)
Did you have fun there? I’m also considering traveling to south-east asia but the potential awkwardness is holding me back. I’m 6ft5, and yes from the netherlands 😅
It's not true. People like animals also evolve according to their surroundings, in tropical regions people tend to be skinny. In hilly regions also tend to be small and agile, so that they are fit for environment. A heavy bulky person will consume much more energy to move than a lean small person.
Sounds like you're poor shaming. They're wealthy locals too but still in their average height. Its all simply because of genetics. If you are going to talk about diet, I attest that South East Asian diet is more organic and healthier than the western.
organic though healthier are actually much smaller then nonorganic just look at organic fruits/vegs and animals that a feed organic food they much smaller than their nonorganic counterpart.

Ya, dari data terbaru bisa dilihat rata² tinggi badan org Indonesia terus meningkat. Skrg udah 166cm laki² & 155cm perempuan.
Starving Somalis are still tall. It's genetics.

Diet + Genetics. Genetics is the natural limit set by your parents, and diet is the limiter to that limit. Even genetics may change over the course of a few generations if selection favors tall people, not to say there’s anything wrong with being small in a modern setting given how I myself am 5’7”.
Joe, videos like this have to be longer. Incredible vid.
Laos is also the country most bombed by the USA 🇺🇸….something tells me that had something to do with the poverty and knock on effects including general height of the population.

Trust me, walking at 6'4 in Indonesia is equivalent to walking at 7'9 in America.

I was born in the Philippines, and they have some of the shortest height averages in the world as well. Last time I went, I stuck out like a sore thumb every single place I went to.
Nope laotian are really actually shortest same as vietnamese, khmer and myanmar only in SEA are average height is singapore and thailand
Height is 50% genetics 50% diet, that’s a fact. Height has gone up worldwide in the last 100 years, a lot of that is due to better nutrition.
@@redtitan8243 Source on the 50% 50% ? Height was going up even during famines and wars in Europe.

Im born in america and parents from southern china, and im 5'6.
it's because of their DNA, it would take 1000 years before the gene pool gets mixed
Because its generational xD

@@lorenzospitaleri
It was a totally different lifestyle that we led.

In Southeast Asia carbohydrates are more important than anything.
It's not true. People like animals also evolve according to their surroundings, in tropical regions people tend to be skinny. In hilly regions also tend to be small and agile, so that they are fit for environment. A heavy bulky person will consume much more energy to move than a lean small person.
well fat people are everywhere now
Sounds like you're poor shaming.
