Hi. You are very welcome fellow South African 😀 100% Tallow soap doesn't make big bubbles but rather a foam (think shaving foam) the foam-ability does improve with time , I have some Tallow soap older than 10 years that outperforms my new soap, but if you want it to lather up easier and more you will have to tweak the recipe a bit. The odor depends very much on your method of rendering, wet rendering keeps the temperatures low, the meaty smell usually creeps in the moment the fat reaches temperatures where the sinew and meaty bits starts to crisp up during dry rendering. If you do make soap with a smell it will tone down and even dissappear over time. Hi, yes you can use ghee in soap, the NaOH Saponification value is 0.162, soapmakingfriend does list Ghee in their calculator. If palm oil is an option for you, you can try that as well, it has very similar properties to beef fat.
Hi Ansa, can I add borax and Blousil and how much should I add for laundry. How do you make Boerseep gel? I rendered my own tallow using the water method and it is pretty much odour free. The trick is don’t be in a rush and strain it at least 6 times.
Hi Marie, I prefer not to make Boerseep gel, it is very slimy, but if slimy doesn't put you off you basically make a Tallow liquid soap, you use Potasium Hydroxide to make a soap paste and then thin it to the desired thickness. I add about 5ml blousel to a 1.5kg Tallow recipe but it depends on how blue you want your soap to be. The recipes in my 43 year old book (So maak ons seep) calls for up to 50grams of Borax for every 2kg of fat. I hope that gives you some guidelines to work with. 🌿
Castor oil will help but don't do more than 15%, you can use any oil high in lauric aid to boost bubbles, palm KERNEL oil or Babbaso oil is two popular ones, Babassu is not available where I live so I've never used it myself. And a tablespoon of powdered sugar per 500gram of oil will also boost bubbles.
Hi, thank you for your video. One question I cannot seem to find an answer to is: Can you use lard? When I have researched the internet says tallow is rendered beef fat and lard is rendered pork fat. But other recipes for boerseep day either beef or pork or sheep fat can be used but that sheep fat sometimes has a bit of a smell. Please help with this. Thanks in a advance.
Hi Fallon. Apologies for taking so long to reply, somehow your message slipped by. You can definitely use lard, Boerseep was made with any animal fat available to the farmers wives. I personally uses Tallow only because it is much cheaper than Lard. Just always run the recipe through a soap calculator to ensure you use the correct amount of lye, although as far as I remember the SAP values for Tallow and Lard are very close, if not the same.
thank you a lot for these very informative videos and i wanted to know how long tallow soap would take to fully cure does it cure as fast as coconut oil soap ?
You are very welcome Saleh. Curing time will be the same as with coconut oil soap. You can use it before 4 weeks but all soap prrforms really much better after 6weeks.
Thank you Sharifa. I use greaseproof paper to line my molds, I buy mine from baking and packaging supplies stores. You can also use baking paper (available from Pick n Pay and Checkers) that has a silicone coating on it for even better results. I have a video dedicated to lining materials to show how they perform. ruclips.net/video/oPgJmI5zLLw/видео.html
Hi, Thank you for your video. I’ve done a bit of research and still have a question. Please help. Some websites/recipes say you can use any animal fat such as rendered beef fat, rendered pig fat or rendered mutton fat but that mutton fat does have a bit of a smell. What is the difference then between tallow & lard? (One is Beef & the other pig apparently) Can I use lard then to make soap? Thanks in advance.
Hi Fallon, no question is a silly question, and you are always welcome to ask. Yes you can use different animal fats in soap, there will be differences in smell and colour, and the fatty acid profiles wil also differ slightly. For example. Tallow: Stearic Acid 22% Oleic acid 36% Lard: Stearic acid 13% Oleic acid 46% Meaning Tallow is a little bit more creamy and Lard a little more moisturising. If you haven't watched my soap calculator video yet it might help you choose between them. For me it usually ends up to cost effectiveness, Tallow is 3 times cheaper than Lard where I live. ruclips.net/video/3e_rS7vn788/видео.html

I bought some tallow from a soap making supplier in Jhb, but is has a weird smell. I was hoping that it wouldn't come through in the finished product, but the soap has a 'sweaty' smell!!! What do I do to sort it out please
Hi Shirley. It I best to render your own Tallow, I prefer wet rendering to keep any smells to minimum. Adding water to the rendering process keeps the max temperature to the lower side, the meaty bits doesn't have enough heat to crisp up in the oil adding to the "meaty" smell. With this batch just give it some time, the smell might still mellow out over time. You can also add some essential or fragrance oil at trace to your soap to mask some of it. I like to add some peppermint essential oil to mine. Citrus scents also smells nice but I've found that they lose their fragrance fast, citrus just doesn't stick around for long by themselves.
@@saponify6677 I have done the rendering and it made a huge difference, thanks!! I have seen in various videos that one should try to buy grass-fed tallow. Where can one source that? I live in Joburg

Hi there. I prefer to do wet rendering when I render my Tallow. Here is a video on how I do wet rendering. Hope this help. 🌿 ruclips.net/video/FiUF4b4gVAw/видео.html
Hello!! After render the tallow you can infuse it with rosemary at 40oC, no more, overnight. That helps a little. I do it that way and I love rosemary. The same with lard. Greetings!!
The super fat can be adjusted to suit your needs. For laundry soap 0% works best, for bath soap 5% is a good super fat. You can check out this video how to do it in a soap calculator if you are not familiar with how to use one. ruclips.net/video/3e_rS7vn788/видео.html
Hi Genevieve. For hardwater I would add a bit more coconut oil in the recipe, {I know boerseep is traditionally just lard or Tallow but coconut oil boosts the lather} coconut oil soap is more soluble than Tallow or Lard and the cleansing number will be higher, then I would use some citric acid as well to act as a chelator by binding to the minerals in the water to allow your soap to perform better. Here is a video on citric acid in soap. ruclips.net/video/4-dlFw71tDo/видео.html
Hi. We do use lye in the recipe, the oil formulation is Tallow and Coconut oil, the link to the recipe is just below the formulation in the description. Just click on the link and it will open on soapmakingfriend where you can print and use it as is, or you can scale it up or down to fit your mold. 🌿
I remember you mentioned that when using a large portion of tallow soap that you cut the soap withing 4hrs because it hardens up quickly, I have a recipe that uses 50% tallow, would you still recommend that I cut after 4hrs?
I would suggest the very scientific finger poke test 😄😉 if it feels firm, try to cut it , every recipe is different and even small changes, even just the temperature you soap at can have very different results. If you do miss your cutting window, try to heat up the soap log in the oven at the lowest setting, it will soften up things a bit.
Thank you for the advice, I definitely will do the trusted finger test before hand and just keep and eye on it, I guess it's not a soap you can leave in a hurry lol

Hi Annemarie.
Anders giet in enkel vorms.
Goeie dag. Ek is so bietjie besig met navorsing. Baie dankie
Hi Daisy en Mekaela. Daar is nie so iets soos n dom vraag nie.
I’m going to be making a tallow soap but I can’t use coconut oil so I’ll be adding castor oil for the lather booster
Lets do this , here we go.. let the master show us how it's done!!!
Can I use it immediately after cooling?
Hi Geraldine. It is safe to use after 48 hours but it only performs at it's best after 6 weeks cure.
Lovely white soap. What paper did you use to line your mould and where did you buy it from? I’m South African As well.
Hi,
Thank you for your video.
Tallow: Stearic Acid 22% Oleic acid 36%
Lard: Stearic acid 13% Oleic acid 46%
Meaning Tallow is a little bit more creamy and Lard a little more moisturising.
If you haven't watched my soap calculator video yet it might help you choose between them. For me it usually ends up to cost effectiveness, Tallow is 3 times cheaper than Lard where I live. ruclips.net/video/3e_rS7vn788/видео.html
@@saponify6677 thank you for such a quick response. I am completely new to this soap making. I use cloth nappies and live on a farm in KZN and am keen to use this for our water system, it is also apparently amazing with getting stains out of cloth nappies & baby clothes and general use. We have a butcher about 1km away from us and I can get beef fat from them. I am watching your videos on how to render the tallow and make soap from scratch. Thank you for such informative videos.
@@falloncourtneyhingle415 It is my pleasure, "Boerseep" is great for stains, actually for everything, I use it from dirty coolerbox lids to butcher aprons. 😄
@@saponify6677 Thanks so much! I will give it a try
@@saponify6677 I have done the rendering and it made a huge difference, thanks!! I have seen in various videos that one should try to buy grass-fed tallow. Where can one source that? I live in Joburg
Would adding clay or activated charcoal also work to lessen the smell? I don't want to use essential oils.
Hi Ansa. I love your channel. thank you for all your info. Do you have a hot process boerseep video or recipe.

what are your measurements (ie lye)?
Hi there. The lye depends on how much of each oil you use. In all my my video descriptions I type out the formulation in percentages to make it easy to scale the recipe up or down, below that you will find a link like this one, if you click on it it will open the recipe in Soapmaking Friend where you can adjust the mold sizes to your requirements. Hope that helps 🌿www.soapmakingfriend.com/soap-recipe/48089.tallow-laundry-soap-saponify
How do i kill smell of tallow as it has woofy meaty smell
Hi there. I prefer to do wet rendering when I render my Tallow. By adding water to the pot you limit the temperature to 100⁰C and prevent the meaty bits in the fat to crisp up, it is the meaty bits that increase the meaty smell.
Greetings!!
What is the SF?
The super fat can be adjusted to suit your needs. For laundry soap 0% works best, for bath soap 5% is a good super fat. You can check out this video how to do it in a soap calculator if you are not familiar with how to use one. ruclips.net/video/3e_rS7vn788/видео.html
Love boerseep, but have hard water. How should I go about using it for my laundry (I usually make a boerseep gel) to prevent build-up? Baie dankie!
@@saponify6677 thank you very much for the information!
Hi, so there isn’t any lye in this recipe? Thank you!
Baie dankie❤
Altyd n plesier.
Is this skin safe? Or only good for laundry?
It is an awesome bath soap if you do a 5% superfat.

Hi Annemarie.
Ek gril as ek dink aan tallow 😅
Hi.
Anders giet in enkel vorms.

Goeie dag.
Ek is so bietjie besig met navorsing.
Baie dankie
Hi Daisy en Mekaela.
Daar is nie so iets soos n dom vraag nie.
Ansa ruclips.net/video/3e_rS7vn788/видео.html
