2:01 - If it isn’t M. B. Gordy! While I was studying film scoring, our professor had him join a recording session where we were re-scoring a scenes from _Rome._ It was incredible working with him - and having my eyes opened up to all the strange, rare, and powerful percussion instruments that see frequent use in screen scoring. You and I both know how fun it is to collaborate with him.
Stoked for this score Austin! Shouldn't have been surprised when I saw Rachel pop up lol I had a thought while watching your raw sessions recording the Traveler Symphony the other day - as a self taught singer/songwriter just getting started with composing and orchestration, I've never really been exposed to what distinguishes a good conductor from a great one. As an outside viewer it's easy to assume it's as simple as keeping the beat and giving gestures for dynamics, but if it were truly a simple task then we wouldn't have conductors being called "one of the greats." If you're ever strapped for video ideas and feel the spirit move you I'd love to see a video breaking down what makes a good conductor, how two conductors can produce vastly different sounds from the same score, maybe even some breakdowns of the technique of some of your own favorites!
You know, I didn't have "Austin playing the dumbell and corrugated cardboard" on my yearly loto card. As usual, so evocative and awe-some. I didn't know the game, but now it's on my radar. Something tells me this OST's going to be peak again!
A massive departure from Journey and Abzu, but in the best possible sense. Watching (er, listening?) to how your scores have developed over the last 10+ years has been extraordinary. Would love to potentially do this one in our gamer symphony!
Wow, the showcase of all the unusual instruments used was so inspiring! Wrap your hand in a towel and tap your piano! Set up taiko drums in your home studio, screw the neighbors LOL! Or build your own mega-flute from laser-cut wooden boxes!? So cool that you got to be so expansive with it.
Glad to see real music being made by real people! So much could be done just with digital tools or AI nowadays. Orchestral scores are so underappreciated in film and video games. The amount of work from so many humans is staggering. And yet it adds so much to the ambience, life, and heart of the experience!
I am quite confident AI wouldn't have been able to make *this* score (whether that makes the music good or not, is up to others to decide!). It's full of lots of choices which I just don't see broad averages of existing datasets yielding. Maybe I'm wrong! Either way, yes I agree that the real people are what make it what it is!
Oh my gosh Austin, this is beautiful! I really look forward to playing this one! That's so cool seeing you use the dumbbell as an instrument, your creativity is always inspiring!
hey Austin, big fan and been a long time follower of ur music. gonna get this on PS5. At 0:10 As a student of music, i'm curious what u meant by not overly polished in music composition terms, could u elaborate a lil more on that?
I actually do a pretty deep dive into that and surrounding topics in the prior video :) ruclips.net/video/BakTc-WMxlE/видео.html Short version: played loosely, not so uniform in the articulation, and things like that. Most of the time in the studio we work very hard to be tightly together and homogeneous and I was trying to get them to briefly unlearn those instincts, and also make sure they knew that if someone made a mistake on a take, I'd likely want to keep it in there!
This compilation gave us the chills! Thank you so much for your work on Eternal Strands, Austin. We're (eternally) grateful 💛
Right back at you; it's been a privilege and an honor!!!!

I remember when this game was revealed last year. I was already excited and the fact that you are behind the score makes me even happier. 😊
