      I don't own an X8 and have never used one...but my understand is that the X8 has all the patches of an OB-8 in it, so the information should help out, I would think. The upper patch is literally stock. It's called, "Rock Unison" in the manual, and the lower patch is "Farr's Funk." Hopefully that helps! Good luck!

    For sure in live shows they had the synth prepared just for that song. You can not create a preset for it.

    • @inasimplerhyme
      @inasimplerhyme  5 месяцев назад

      Oh, for sure. With every song, I'm sure all those sounds were dialed up and saved. On the OB-8, patches BCD 1-8 and ABCD 1-8 were all blank just to save custom presets. Unfortunately for me, my WRITE button on my OB-8 just died!

  • @Gerald_Daniel
    @Gerald_Daniel 5 месяцев назад +2

    The.lead sound is a preset??? i'd never imagined that because not any of my gone OB8s had it in their memory slots. If I had known better.... 🙄

    • @inasimplerhyme
      @inasimplerhyme  5 месяцев назад +1

      When first trying to recreate WCTBL, I simply went preset by preset trying to find the right sounds, starting with A1. I went through them all, but couldn't find anything. Then I started actually reading the manual. I didn't realize you could press more than one letter at a time! I just went A1, A2, A3, etc, then B1, B2, B3. Once I realized you could do AB or ABC, I finally found it!

      @@inasimplerhyme I've acttuually had no probs with sound selection, operating & recreated the lead sound based on a live recording in which the tone is held at the end & shows how breathtakingly beautiful the slave cuts through the spectrum, but otherwise I'd never in the world expected (facing merely boring OB presets) that WCTBL is a preset, but - wait a minute - ain't OB8's "Rock Unison" patch an updated version of something with an (I believe) similar name originated on the OB(S)X used on Prince's track "Head"?
      The one of my OB8s that worked/sounded best, unfortunately was from an ambient guy that mainly glanced down at the 80s & obviously overwrote the VH sound! My personal opinion is that (no matter of taste) these guys at least should realize/respect how unbelievably tight and staccato Eddie (even) was as a keyboardist, before immediately scrunching up their noses about hits like “Jump” (& other wicked melodic songs), because ain't it the truth that the most, even highly educated "experts", already stumble when interpreting "just" those few Jump-chords the way Eddie did?
      When the third OB8 started to die I've spent days/nights recreating fave patches on other hw synths. That was a nightmare because my own patches mostly made use of OB8's Page 2 functionality. Though it certainly was impossible to reconstruct the sheer brightness, at least all modulations got captured, even quantizations. Anyway, at.least the previous owner got deceived by the patches.
      In general I've had bad luck with my OB8s by having an incredibly overburdened synth museum's head as a tech. He tried hard at the time. I really appreciate that but he still couldn't manage that particular service well. Due to that,, one wreck ended as a pawn for a way easier JP-6 repair. The other two wrecks were sold last year for something (only at the first glance) completely different: YAMAHA's 2nd FM test balloon GS2 that unexpectedly excels itself at the most unexpected: the synth pads.

    • @inasimplerhyme
      @inasimplerhyme  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Gerald_Daniel Wow, sorry the OB-8s were bringing you to much trouble! I have an issue where my key to write new patches finally died, so I can't save any patches at the moment. And my tech says it's the newer diagonal type pin layout, which is super rare (as opposed to the rectangular, which is more common.) I've emailed several places, and no one's gotten back to me yet. At least it's still playable!

    • @Gerald_Daniel
      @Gerald_Daniel 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@inasimplerhyme That's also tough! I really hope you receive positive feedback soon!
      Above all, during the reprogramming, I realized how incredibly unique the sound & how wide the sweet spot is. Amusingly when it came to modulation and fullness the Yamaha AN1x (only after hefty internal processing) came closer to what an OB8 does than Tom Oberheim's own mid-90s Prosynth but don't get me wrong:.An AN1x remains 90s VA what nonetheless is holes in the frequency spectrum.
      Shortly I considered getting an UBXa, but it misses 3 important things: Max LFO rate is just 2O instead of 50 kHz, the "special wave" introduced with the Rhodes Chroma in '82 and adopted by the OB8 when using Saw & Pulse simultaneously in modulating saw INSTEAD of pulse is foreign to the UBXa & most of all the sound itself is obviously less vivid & direct. 3 kHz less is not much on the paper, but well audible, like Starscy Carr's comparison shew.
      An 8 slot mod matrix in addition to a.fully (!) implementef Page 2 is not to be despised, but the UBXa still shines more on its own terrain than as an OB clone.
      In Oberheim-tradition the OBX8 is typically overpriced. Were it still an option for you?

    • @inasimplerhyme
      @inasimplerhyme  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Gerald_Daniel Thanks for the well wishes! And wow, you know way more about synths than me! As far as the X8, if I didn't already own an OB-8, I would probably consider getting it, because the 8 can't perfectly replicate the lower patch of 1984, since that was an Xa, and (theoretically) an X8 should be able to. But right now my money will eventually go towards a Roland D-50 and Yamaha DX7II so I can try and faithfully recreate the sounds off OU812. (Mine All Mine and When It's Love in particular.)
