    Thanks for this amazing history of Ryde. When the School of Arts was demolished, various shops took its place over the years. During the 90s it was Con's Pizza. The area was known locally as 'Con's Corner'.

      Thanks for your complimentary remarks, but even more so for your comments on what you remember of the past. We are contemplating, creating play lists of our RUclips videos. At present there are sixty one videos chronologically ordered. Some have been up for more than four years, and one less than a month. One thought is to link them geographically, that is suburbs that butt on to one another. Why am I asking you to comment? Because Ryde lies in isolation, its nearest neighbours, that we have done videos on are across the Parramatta river. Is it purely by chance, that you have discovered our channel. Some of our suburbs have more views than there are people now living in the area. We would have thought after over four years we might have understood our demographic but we don’t. Apart from RUclips analytics telling us that, four out of five are male and all are over forty five years old. I hope I haven’t overwhelmed you. It’s always very encouraging when we receive comments like yours. I hope others might care to join in the conversation.

    A recommendation for those who return to a specific video searching for a particular point of interest. Use “precise seeking” use your finger, stylus or cursor to drag the red line at the bottom left of your screen to the right. You should then see small but very clear pictures of what is being played on the RUclips video. After finding the picture you want, play it, or use “pinch and zoom” on a touch screen to enlarge the image for more detail. This you do by spreading or contracting the distance between your thumb and index finger whilst touching the image on the screen.

      Thanks for your comments. Please read the comments we've made to Warren Hunt, whose comments you'll find above. Apart from what we said to Warren, we have an interest in knowing what a person's connection is with the suburb, if any. We would like to think that we are providing information to those who have recently moved into the suburb, such that they can feel some sort of identity, nostalgia for those who remember times past in the suburb, or for those, who simply delight in walking suburbs, and know having watched our video, that what is a housing development once was a factory, the shop or office block that was once a cinema, and churches that are now used for other purposes.One of our disappointments is that, the suburbs that have been taken over by universities or hospitals have considerably less viewers than perfectly ordinary suburbs. Others, that focus on purely history, are likewise not as well patronised as we had hoped. For us finding our audience is still a challenge, but we still enjoy doing it!

    Very interesting. I had no idea that Ryde was one of the earliest settlements in Australia.

    • @stpeterscooksriver1873
      @stpeterscooksriver1873  8 дней назад

      @@chrisflesser2171 The reason for it being one of the earliest settlements is that being on a river, meant that it was easy to travel to by boat. Roads had to be made, horse and cart or carriage, didn’t have the capacity of shipping. Even horse drawn trams required a rail network. The development of many of Sydney’s suburbs was created by the rail network. It is a constant feature of many of Sydney Suburban History videos. It enabled not only factories in the suburbs to trade, but also those whose business was in the city, could live in the far more attractive environment of suburbs in larger homes, hence Strathfield and Burwood to name but two. The historian Geoffrey Blainey’s book “Black Kettle, Full Moon,” deals with the reason why things were as they were in early settlement times, why spirits were the drink, rather than beer and the importance of a full moon. All quite trivial, but significant in their time. It does encourage us to read that you found “Ryde” interesting, thank you.

      It is very satisfying to receive a comment from someone like yourself, who we remember from other comments. The comments we've made in reply to Warren Hunt, see above, equally apply to you, regarding choosing a suburb to do a history of. Habberfield may well be the only suburb, whose beginnings in the 20th century, the vision of one man, make it not only unique in N.S.W. but worth presenting in video format.Having used the word unique, I am quite happy should anyone prove me wrong. Thanks for your comment.

      @@ruidean72 I think this may be outside your field of expertise, though one never knows in the big city. So here goes! We had high hopes of our video on Manly, but in spite of some encouraging comments, it appears to have ground to a halt. Briefly, we thought Manly had an interesting history, had not only residents, but visitors, who had fond memories of it. We’ve already had a very civilised discussion with you regarding, why we should make a video on Habberfield. We thought we had chosen well, in Manly, in that ‘every one knows the name, and location’ not to mention the rugby league team. This may be so, but few appear interested in it’s history or perhaps I should say our video. I perhaps should add, that we are loath to use social media, for much as our comment’s page has only a modest response, we do have correspondents who are capable of putting together meaningful and to the point sentences, and being perfectly civilised about it. In this day and age this is something very precious. I’ve left, perhaps more fulsome comments on the Manly comments site, which may more clearly show why we are disappointed. In short our recent thoughts on picking a suburb, have not borne fruit. As always thanks for your encouragement.

      Thanks for your comment, we dearly would like to know what you, and anyone else found,
      “awesome “ in the video on Ryde? As with many videos what the creative team thinks is, an interesting video, turns out not to be with our audience. What with our number of views, the average time of viewing, subscribers and viewers comments, we must be doing something right, but what is it?

      @@pyne13 We hope we have created, a consistent style with all of our videos, such that our viewers will know what to expect. We also know courtesy of RUclips analytics that our viewers are predominately male, and most are over forty five years old. We have no idea what percentage of our viewers no longer live in the the area they are viewing, yet are nostalgic about it. We are beginning to see that there are a group who are particularly interested in industrial history, such that suburbs that have been reinvented and gentrified have a degree of popularity. A few of our viewers, delight in recognising certain buildings in their suburb that had a previous life, cinemas, hall, large homes, the latter, now nursing homes. Some comments also point to a past, where people never moved far from there place of work. What, we do grieve , is the lack of interest in history videos, about particularly buildings and events. Particularly of the 19th century. We began thinking, like yourself, that such things are truly worth doing something with. I’ve just had lunch with the creator, and she tells me that the reason we haven’t done anything with Tarban Creek lunatic asylum is that she sees it as being in Gladesville. So perhaps you should be giving us some ideas as to why we should do one on that suburb. Truly pleasing and encouraging to read your comment. We are surprisingly happy with the views Ryde has, just aren’t sure why! Look forward to hearing from you.

      The Creator has had a brief look as to whether Gladesville might be put on the agenda. We have noted that you were watching the Ryde video, when you chose to make this comment. Ryde itself, has been quite remarkable as to not only how many views it has received, but also how erratic it has been, with many days where it has certain peaks of views. We are still very much in the dark as to what the cause is, and have searched for some newsworthy event in the area. Alas we are none the wiser, and have come to the conclusion it has something to do with real estate. Perhaps you could enlighten us, not only about this, but also the likelihood of Gladesville behaving in the same way. Such information might harden our resolve to “work on Gladesville.” If I were you I’d be optimistic.Thanks for your comment.

      I've let other people know about your interesting historic Sydney videos and will watch more of them.
      I think the YT algorithm is a bit temperamental and sends me interesting things to see like yours which also sent me the history of the construction of the Gladesville Bridge.
      Keep up the good work.

      @@ALF782 Delighted by your response. Give me a day or so and I’ll get back to you on the challenges as to how the algorithm work, or doesn’t work. The Creator just gets on with making another video whilst I have spent too many hours on the analysis of what suburbs are viewed more than others. By the way Balmain is one of those, whilst, North Sydney and anything other than
      Manly, on the North Shore can only be described as being disappointing.
