I haven’t seen the trailer but from what you’ve presented in this video, I agree with the children media lacking. That’s why shows like Bluey outperform other shows because they tell real feeling stories versus just pandering and talking at children. I’ve never viewed Minecraft as a children exclusive game so it’s really bizarre that the direction would be limiting their audience by dumbing down the media even more than it has (ie simple graphics (tends to feel less complex), toys marketing to children).

"I’ve never viewed Minecraft as a children exclusive game"
I don't think it was even intended to be specifically "for kids" as it was intially made by a one person who just had idea for a sandox. It was "general audience", more than anything. It just happened to be VERY popular among kids, so the association "kids like it" = "it's SPECIFICALLY and EXLUSIVELY for kids" was created. Microsoft didn't help with creating more and more changes seemingly from the point of "educating" the audience, which says a lot how they percieve them.

As someone in animation, I will say there are shows (current shows) that are trying, but I only know of Tween/teen rated cartoons and up. So shows like the Owl House, Shera and princesses of Power. Even the Magical Unicorn show on Netflix.
It seems like the bigger execs really don't understand what they have to do once the IP is huge. Except for Nintendo.

Imagination created all the weapons , all the ways to torture pepole , all the poisons , all the empires and all the oppressions ,
It created all the weird neutral things too : the fact we fondle animals to get milk ,
All the surgeries , all the sex positions and all the kinks ...

I think the main problem is they didnt consider the fact that there has been an entire generation of people that have played this game and its not just little kids anymore. 15 years of different people should make you open your eyes and make a movie for everyone. In other words, they did minecraft story mode very well and shouldve just kept the same idea of that as it was minecraft and was made for all different ages.

Microsoft bought Minecraft to get a Roblox-like machine to sip from parents credit cards quietly, so they target exactly who they want to target.
It takes only one RUclips search to see that the average Minecraft let's player now is a dude in late 20s playing Java with 100+ mods, that's no secret, I just don't think that's the audience Microsoft wants to be "friends" with. It is a harsh audience with a lot of wants and criticism, that actually probably has money, but those need to be earned. Frankly speaking, it never really was a kids game either, but that doesn't mean the dynamics of this game is understood. I think back in a decade they saw numbers go big, kids on RUclips, and didn't change strategy since then.

As much hate as Minecraft storymode gets, at the VERY LEAST they understood minecraft is what you make of it. That's how they could have PVP centered plots, then murder mystery centered plots. The protagonist and his friends are in a situation because of how their world was devolped, but their situation changes when they encounter worlds others made, because minecraft is shaped by the player.
Examples being the wither storm, and the hero storyline. It's shapped by Ivan's actions, and the actions of how everyone in the town shaped their world. They're builders, they hold building contests, they leave the fighting to these idols they have. If you want to adventure, you must personally go seek it out, and there is a market. It feels a lot like a SMP. Then later when they encounter that PVP arena style minigame server. There's respawning, relentless fighting and minigames, and a audience watching them, because the creator of that world made it that way. There's a lack of building fun in that section of the story, even if it's still somewhat of a fuction because the creator of that space designed the space to be a minigame arena.
And DESPITE it's flaws, the ending really did try their heartfelt message. You would have to choose what you want to do. That's what Minecraft is about, your choices, and choosing your path will have you make new connections or drift away from old ones.

Same goes for a lot of the Minecraft inspired book series. I was a huge fan of the Gameknight999 series, one where it was more the heros journey and less about building. The thing is, it combined the mechanics of Minecraft with warfare in a way that I could feasibly make in Minecraft myself if I so desired. The creativity of the game being alive is what made me love it.

that actually explains and puts into words really well why the minecraft movie rubbed so wrong with me. I'm not a child anymore, but I STILL dont always know how to say or understand what I'm feeling, and movies when done well? they help with that. Games that put me through experiences, and help me visualize and understand whats in my head? they help me with that.
Children owe us nothing, and they deserve everything, but they are so often given empty bubbles of word and meaningless pretty pictures that teach them nothing. Games and movies for them should be just as good as what you would give an adult who isn't afraid to fight.

"I should not have had such strong feelings on the Minecraft movie" NO! You're Right! Not only have they (seemingly) botched the theme of Minecraft, they've also sucked any sense of heart and sincerity from it. I don't know what happened but somewhere along the line corporations decided it was "uncool" to genuinely like things, especially if the thing in question is a little bit dumb. Forget getting the audience to suspend their disbelief, it feels like more and more screenwriters can't even be bothered to do so in the writing room; almost as though they think they're too good to have a little bit of fun, and that you should be ashamed to like the thing that they're making. Most of the "dumb" movies and tv shows that are made nowadays don't even ask you to suspend your disbelief because they can't go 5 minutes without poking fun at themselves and being like "Isn't this such a weird and wacky concept?". Yeah. It is. That's why it's fun. I didn't go watch the FNAF movie in theater because I thought I would see an Oscar worthy performance. They served me goofy, murderous animatronics, didn't try to make me feel bad for liking it, and didn't toy with the established canon in any way that didn't make sense. With the Minecraft movie trailer, not only does it seem like they're going to make the entire thing into a joke because "It's just a block game" but also in the 1:20 we are given they repeatedly dance all over canon in ways that just don't make sense. It obvious that these creators not only don't know or understand the source material, but they also just don't respect their viewer base.

@@deborahamos5401the fnaf movie was never going to follow the game's timeline since theorising is such a large part of the community. It was always going to go the direction of the books & be set in a similar but different timeline, so while you could say it's undone lore in that aspect, it hasn't really since it's not the same universe. When it comes to the lore concepts used, everything I remember seeing falls in line with other official fnaf media out there, or is new but really isn't out there compared to things in some of the books.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that the film is in line with other official fnaf stories & doesn't 'undo' the lore since it's its own universe like the books, which we can use to help inform our ideas of what the game lore is, but still it's own separate thing.
What I'd say messes with the lore wayyyy more is the newest fnaf game lol. Into the pit being a game version of one of the book stories now begs the question of whether it's canon to the other games or not & adds a whole bunch of wack stuff to the game cannon if so.

    @drattinson 3 месяца назад +71

You really nailed why I also am very hesitant about this movie. My friend thinks it's fine but it's an often argued issue how he accepts far too much when he deserves better.
This trailer feels like it wants us to laugh AT it, not WITH it. It decorates itself with a layer of self-deprecation. "Look at our world, isn't it weird?"
"Oh that's Steve, YOU should know him." They directly tell the audience that this is a movie they shouldn't take seriously, because the characters don't take it seriously, at least based on this trailer.
This reminds me of an interview from Rob McElhenney, creator of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. He was attached to direct a Minecraft animated film a few years back until WB leadership changed and the project fizzled away.
    He says this:
"I thought one of the greatest assets to Minecraft was they didn't have a fixed narrative. It was an open world experience. All you were essentially give[n] was the building blocks to do whatever you want. I thought, what an amazing tool, much like Legos except now you're talking about infinite possibilities because it's digital, to give to kids--and not just kids, but any person who feels powerless. Kids mostly feel powerless; all day long they're being told what to do, how to dress, do your homework, go to bed. I felt like that could extend to other people. I think everybody feels marginalized to an extent. Your boss is telling you what to do all day long, or your spouse is. You just feel like you don't have this sense of agency over your own life. The game gave you that, and I thought that's a really profound experience."
This sounds a lot like McElhenney cared about the game. And that's the real kicker, that's why the previous video game movies succeeded and clicked with audiences that aren't just kids. The creatives behind the movie versions of Mario, Sonic, FNAF, communicated that they loved the games just as much as the fans did, of all ages.

The sonic movie could fix some of its critique by redesigning sonic, but that still caused a large delay and a bunch of overworked artists to get fired around Christmas. So far the movie seems so broken that I can’t imagine it doing anything besides be a loss at theatres even if they did somehow turn everything around. Like combine Coraline, Terrabithia and Wonderland into a movie. When the kid is in the real world it's live action and when he's in the game it's animated... It could be so good, heartwarming. None of the kid's media coming out right now has potential to become a classic. Mulan dealt with war, Bambi dealt with death, Toy Story dealt with jealousy, Coraline with wish fulfillment gone wrong, Lion King with responsibility. All of these movies are classics both children and adults enjoy and hold dear. The Minecraft movie could've been one of them. It has all the building blocks they needed (pun intended lol). The Beatles song is especially egregious a 'bait' because they're always going to be popular... with adults... and the song is not so subtly about 'rolling up' a joint to go on a 'magical mystery tour'. Basically it's a fun-sounding 420 joke. But it's for kids! Who get their music from TikToks and have no clue who the Beatles were.
In fact it's even more of a nostalgia bait because when Minecraft really came onto the scene, the Beatles' 50th anniversary wave thing was still going on and bringing in new fans through rereleased albums and Beatles Rock Band and whatever. It's entirely likely that the old fans this 'isn't for' were listening to The Beatles for the first time while playing Minecraft for the first time.

To me, MC always felt existential and contemplative and the end scroll captures that. I’m absolutely in the same boat. I knew of it, but when I first read it, it was after beating the Ender Dragon with a full group of chaotic friends who were laughing and celebrating the victory, so, I only partially was able to focus on it.
But now, going through the worst bout of depression I have ever had, unpacking a lot of packed up trauma and such, dealing with a huge existential and dreadful nihilism creep in and begin rotting the love I’ve had in life, in the world…in me, I’ve been very low. Looking in a mirror and holding no hope or love for the thing I see in the reflection, only loathing and full of the fear of an uncaring world that would inevitably chew me up, and I would be too week to fight it any more, for another year, another week, maybe even day.
But, as silly as it sounds, hearing “And the universe said I love you.” crumpled me in a way I wasn’t expecting. Someone, a passionate person, with nothing to gain from adding this extra poem to this fun survival game, wanted the players who read it to know they were loved. That they DID have potential, and dreams, and worth, and that they were so amazing for it. That they deserve to touch, feel, experience, the world. And that they were loved. They could have just made the game roll credits and be done. But someone took the extra time to add this to the end.
The world is scary, sometimes awful and cruel. But you have your own time and worth here, and by God do you deserve and have the right to relish it. To relish yourself. Sometimes we just need to have a reminder, of our worth, and that kindness and love from our fellow human still exists.
Hour by hour, friend, you can do this. It WILL get better, and you DESERVE it. Everything you need is within you. You are not alone ❤️.

When thinking back to my own childhood, honestly I got attached to media that allowed me to connect what I was feeling to a more tangible metaphor/example that made it easier to digest. I think it's awful mega corporations and even most parents are stripping kids nowadays from being able to simply relate to something. instead it is all nonsense, hyper saturated dopamine fixes. the easiest people to prey on are the ones who have zero emotional regulation, and I fear that a lot of these kids will lack very core skills in that self regulation and emotional expression; possibly lacking the ability to not only understand but further communicate how they're feeling or why that is.

I agree! When I was a child I always found books aimed at an older audience or all ages much more engaging than books trying to pander just for kids. You can do kids books (and shows, etc) well - there's still many books I love that are aimed more at kids, but they've always been the ones that don't shy away from the more complex topics (some examples being: The Dark is Rising, How to Train Your Dragon, The Chresomancy Chronicles, Septimus Heap, Warrior Cats, etc). Stuff that presented itself like the Minecraft movie has in this trailer would always immediately put me off it when I was a kid (and still now as an adult).
Kids aren't stupid & they like things that make them feel older, or at least don't treat them as little kids. There's a reason so many kids try to watch/read/play things that are for older audiences & I don't think it's just about wanting to do something they aren't allowed to do.

You both make shields and then laugh at how bad they look, you die while trying to make an impressive jump and you hear them lose it in laughter, you try to go for an epic build and only at the final stretch do you realize it’s lopsided-
Or you try to get your stuff only to get airdropped by a creeper, maybe you tower away from mobs and get pushed by phantoms

I also feel the poem at the end is a really good jumping point to telling a story with its message, to which, in addition to "you can do anything in munecraft", you also have an additional message of "just because minecraft is a fictional world doesn't make the experiences, feelings, and connections you took from it any less real". The biggest aspect or theme of Minecraft that I feel never gets enough attention is the emphasis it puts on the passage of time, both directly and indirectly. Aside from villages and mansions, every single structure has been abandoned and have fallen into various stages of ruin. Almost everything that exists in Minecraft was created in the past. While that can be a logical result of the way time works, the fact that there are occupied structures shows that it is to some degree an intentional choice. It makes the world feel lived in, and makes the aspect of exploration more interesting as you’re finding these obscure ruins with very unclear origins.
It extends beyond the scope of the game’s generation as well. As people have mentioned, there are people who’ve grown up with Minecraft, myself included, and I have a bunch of old worlds from 2011-2013, and it’s very interesting to go back to them as a sort of time capsule. To me, the passage of time and the way we interact with the world has been the main focus of the game. The people before you took the world and built something in it, then you come in, take what’s left over, and build with it. Perhaps years later you will come back, see your own builds that have been lost to time, and build something with them. It’s a kind of dynamic you don’t see a lot in other games, even other sandbox games, and it gives Minecraft that timeless nostalgia that people like so much.
I’m not surprised that the idea of archaeology doesn’t translate well to a movie, but it doesn’t really look like they’re even trying to invoke a similar reaction. They could’ve extrapolated from the old ruins to tell a story, but they didn’t. At least, it doesn’t look like it. The best case scenario is that they somehow found a way to make the trailer out of the worst clips from the movie as possible, and it only goes up from there (But it probably doesn’t). As it stands, I do not really believe that the “normal people in the wacky video game world” are going to be very compelling
Also random but the crafting table scene is so stupid. The crafting table was supposed to abstractly represent the act of creating something out of raw materials. To portray it so literally completely misses the point of it, in a way that kinda highlights just how much they don’t get it. It would be like if they used the furnace and the item they cooked was randomly moved to the right after being cooked because that’s how the menu literally appears in game

I think a theme that can still work with what is given to us is the theme of being passive/active in achieving our dreams, maybe one character is fine with being passive, only building houses and whatever he wants, but another is more active and wants to progress, to get more gear, to maximize his stats, to beat the ender dragon, and another character is a mix of both, maybe back in his good ol' days he was a dreamer too, but through the things he went through he gave up that dream, and to be more geared towards children, maybe a younger character with dreams of his own gets a setback and is forced to pick between being passive/active, maybe he didn't get to his dream school, maybe he didn't get a scholarship that his parents urged him to do, and now the pressure of being 'active' is put to him, getting dissatisfied when he doesn't get to be the 'active' player, but through seeing these different characters and the pros and cons of being passive and active, he realizes that maybe, he can dream again.

They had a story mapped out for them but no one thought of showing them those credits, no one thought of talking to people who have spent years playing to see what was so special about it, no one wanted to connect with the watcher through the movie, through the world of Minecraft.
I hope someday someone makes a Minecraft movie, one that takes a protagonist battling self-doubt and traps them in a lonley world they have to learn to make their own, just to wake up to see that they're alive.

My hope is it’s gonna be like the Jumanji movie where they got stuck in the game and Steve was just a guy that got sucked in years ago when Minecraft first started. And now something is glitchy in the game, and team Mamoa are in there to find out what happened. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Another example of a good video game adaptation, the FNAF Movie.
FNAF's lore, the game and book lore anyway, is already complicated enough as it is, since Scott doesn't really confirm much, and lots of the books are taken at face value[that is ignoring 'The Week Before' with the fandom finally getting some info about Phone Guy, 10 years since the first game, YAY-] by the fans. The FNAF movie mashes the lore of the games and books with it's own elements, and creates something simple, yet recognizable. Something familiar, yet something new. The FNAF Movie[s]'s lore is simple enough to understand, and make theories about. Not only that, many elements from the fandom were implemented successfully into the movie. Various youtubers as 'employees of the month' at the abandoned Freddy's, Matpat as Sparky's waiter Ness[reference to Sans is Ness, confirmed by Scott himself], CoryxKenshin as a cab driver, hell, SPARKY, the most famous FNAF Hoax, is also there. The movie clearly knows it's audience and knows what the fans want, or what most of them would want.
Minecraft's story was always somewhat confusing, but not due to a lot of lore. Lots of the lore that Minecraft has comes from theories and hasn't been fully confirmed by Mojang. A minecraft movie would've been good enough to tell *A* story in Minecraft, it could, i dunno, clear up some stuff about the lore[did the Ancient Builders exist, why does the wither exist, why are there clearly remains of non-villager societies yet any remains of them tend to be underground/underwater], or hell, it could just be a fun movie set in minecraft with nostalgic elements to it. Minecraft the Movie seems to be doing non of those things, and is mostly pandering to children, which, even they don't like it, in a lot of cases.

As a VFX artist, the CGI here is really sub-par. Superficially it looks good but it just doesn’t feel like Minecraft: the mountains have weird large cube chunks which don’t even appear similar to vanilla generation, the scaling is just all weird and it’s very obvious the artists didn’t really care about replicating the original game, and for a movie about a ‘vast world’ it sure is telling how actors in every scene are just cramped together in front of a green screen set. It wouldn’t even be that hard to actually go out in an actual environment and add Minecraft elements in it.

I've never put much thought into the poem at the end of Minecraft before. I've always either skipped it, or looked much too deeply for secrets or metaphors I wasn't understanding. Hearing you retell it in this video, I decided to just listen. No analyzing for some hidden deeper meaning, no trying to figure out who the two voices are, no looking for some strange mystery, just listening to what the game has to say. I cried, and I breathed a little faster and deeper, and I began to dream again. I wasn't expecting anything grand from this movie. I wasn't expecting it to be anything more than the kind of turn off your brain adventure that all movies have been recently. But thank you for showing me what we could have gotten.

Also Minecraft is at it's core a horror fantasy game. That's what it was created as, an indie horror fantasy game that is in sandbox form. If you look up the AI made 80's dark fantasy trailers of a Minecraft movie it's nearly exactly what the movie should be.
