      @CorpusGreed 3 месяца назад +115

      @@supermariohack3218Yeah, but the difference is that both Sonic' and Mario's worlds don't look that different from a real one.
      They are just unrendered, pixilated rocks, trees, grass and characters.
      Why can we imagine real world sonic? Because we HAVE that detailed sonic already. Yes, it's like 16 pixels, but, with how shapes are structured, you can easily imagine what it would loik like irl.
      But MINECRAFT, on the other hand, has a completely different artstyle. Everything is blocks. Not very detailed, messy blocks.
      Steve is pretty much just 6 blocks smashed together: head, body, 2 legs, 2 arms.
      16 px or 4K px, Steve will still have the same shape, made out of 6 blocks. Smae goes to zombie, skeleton, sheep and so on.
      If you try to give Steve realistic arms, and legs - that won't be Steve anymore.
      That'll be a guy named Steve that looks like a famous blocky game character.

    I understand how translating Minecraft into a blockbuster movie is definitely a hard feat and that it would be unreasonable to expect it to look like Minecraft SMP with RTX on, but I still kinda wish they pulled more of a Lego Movie approach to Minecraft (they’re both childhood games centered around creating anyways), with the main characters being from and centered a Minecraft society and the style being more of a stylized version of the Minecraft style with a higher level of detail (instead of being a generic “what if real life people entered video game world and have to find their way back home!1!1!!” and having this weird clash with hyperrealism and blocks). Some part of me hopes that the Minecraft movie in the the trailer was just a joke but the first stage of grief is denial.

    This movie has the same problem that a lot of imagination movies have. As in, the characters and the world are designed in the style of 2D animation, but they're rendered as someone'd render standard marvel-like CGI. Take the sheep for example. They are designed as a more "stylized" take on the standard Minecraft sheep, but they are rendered as someone'd render the model of an ACTUAL REAL-LIFE SHEEP. I think this is where a lot of the uncanniness comes from. Melding MC's unique style with Real Life almost never goes well, unless some HUGE liberties are taken with the characters and environments.

      I think proprtions is the main Problem here, just look at that Big Head and Big eyes and their tiny Legs, then they tried to give it a Crazy Farm Animals vibe, basically they tried to give it more protagonism than they really have, if only they had shown us the same design, more proportioned and simply doing Farm Animal things, they would have gone unnoticed.

    6:40 I also had that opinion. And im glad ur making that point. But after a while I do understand the outrage, the sheep can look realistic and derpy, but they not only did that, they also made it look absolutely horrendous, it looks like a juiced up sheep full of steroids screaming in pain, the skin is so pale he looks like a walking cadaver. They can make it look derpy, but they should make it look cute at least. the ingame mobs also look derpy, but still somewhat cute. I think the piglins are perfect, those look absolutely horrifying and I love it. But they should not go the same route with the cute animals from the Minecraft world.

    • @PlansalagaDon
      @PlansalagaDon 3 месяца назад +68

      Honestly this. I feel like he didn't do a good job breaking down the design of the mobs. Felt like he just looked at the minecraft sheep, saw it had derpy eyes, and went "Oh it's fine!", without looking at the rest of the features of the sheep. The sheep literally looks imperfect and weirdly meshed, especially for something made out of perfect cubes. Which is a shame, cuz this guy was supposed to look at the entire trailer with an Artistic lens, but ended up just generalizing most things imo.

  • @GingaGirl2000
    @GingaGirl2000 3 месяца назад +159

    but it's not just that they transferred the minecraft aesthetic into something realistic, it's not even. like the sheep. they gave it teeth like that, but sheep don't have upper teeth at all in the real world, and we don't see the teeth on minecraft sheep at all. and the proportions on nearly all the mobs are so. why are they so out of place? same with the world itself, you see the big stony arch in there and it's made of blocks, yes, but not in the way minecraft worlds are. minecraft is made up of a bunch of equally sized blocks that pretty naturally create kind of curves and more natural transitions, as pixels should, but in the big stone arch there arw a bunch of weird inconsistently sized big blocks for no reason. and they're not even squares, they're kinda stretched out. i think the reason the bee looks good is because they changed its proportions the least, and the creeper isn't that different either, though i personally think the color and texture on it is a bit too uniform and looks more like a bunch of the grass you get after mowing your lawn, real grass and moss have much more texture. or the wolf we saw; why does it have like a gap between the front of its body and the back? the minecraft model doesn't? it's not that they just unsuccessfully interpreted the minecraft models, it seems more as though they didn't even look at them for longer than a glance and just did whatever the hell came to mind. it feels kinda insulting if you like the game, disrespectful that they didn't even try. like any bad adaptation i guess. well, anyway

    thats why he looks different to the villagers and cant understand what they are saying too so he can only trade physical goods at inconsistent rates
    the villager arms being stuck together was never a meat loop to me and always just felt like some sort of cultural habit since when they become zombies the arms come apart

    While this video is a great explanation for why adapting the Minecraft world into a realistic environment is inherently problematic, I feel like this doesn't address the main critique I've heard about the movie's artstyle at all: Nobody I've talked to or heard talk about this has said they did a bad job at making Minecraft's mobs and world realistic, the problem is that they shouldn't have tried making Minecraft realistic in the first place.
    Adapting Pokémon into a realistic movie is easy. Look at any of the games, especially the newer ones. They're all representations of what a real world might look like if it had Pokémon in it. It takes minimal effort to put elements from the Pokémon games and extended property into a realistic environment, because the games themselves are already trying to be realistic. Same with Sonic, to name the other example you talked about.
    This doesn't work with Minecraft. Minecraft is and was never trying to be realistic. The physics are not realistic, the gameplay is not realistic, the artstyle is not realistic. Of course Minecraft is largely inspired by the real world, in many of its animals, block types, biomes, et cetera, but largely it is trying to be unique instead of being realistic. Mobs aren't designed to look realistic, because they don't need to be. Most blocks aren't affected by gravity, because realism wouldn't really add anything to the game. Minecraft isn't trying to create the most realistic environment, just one with immense creative potential.
    Minecraft is inherently unrealistic, which is why the Minecraft Movie had to jump through so many hurdles to force its elements into a realistic environment. Minecraft's defining characteristics do not work in a realistic world, because they weren't designed with realism in mind, and should therefore not be adapted into one. Making the Minecraft Movie into a live action one was a fundamentally terrible idea. The Minecraft Movie should by all means have been an animated movie, upholding and refining Minecraft's artstyle and world, rather than replacing it and forcing its elements into a world they don't belong to.

    • @lavizcacha6
      @lavizcacha6 3 месяца назад +2

      THIS!! So many people dont get it. The internet is mad because it's live action, that's it. And then we are being told we shouldn't be mad with the movie because it does a good job making Minecraft look realistic? Uhmm no, we never wanted it to be realistic because we knew from the start that it would look this ugly. Just give us Minecraft Story Mode's style of animation and a plot that does not revolve around humans being teleported into the world of Minecraft, that's so boring and cliché. It would be better if the movie revolved around Steve being a character FROM the Minecraft world. For example, in Detective Pikachu the story isn't about a teen being teleported into the world of Pokémon, it's a about a teen FROM the world of Pokémon living in the world he always knew and going on an adventure.
      I would've preferred it if the movie was something like: Steve is a human from a different continent in the world of Minecraft where everything is mostly similar to our world, but one day he somehow found himself on the other side of the world where creatures have evolved to have different biological features, like Creepers being the shape they are and having the ability to explode. Creepers never evolved to exist in Steve's continent, they are a species of "animal" that only exist in this land, so Steve would be terrified of them and everything else in this new continent. And Villagers could have the same ancestors as Steve, but evolved to look different and speak a different language.
      Ughh its so easy to make a kind of interesting plot for a Minecraft movie, it took me a couple of minutes just now. But anyway, lets just sit back and wait for more trailers to come so we can laugh at the garbage they are trying to sell us

There is a difference, and pretending they wouldn't spend millions of dollars on a movie like that is insane. They spend millions on horrible projects all the time. They dumbed down Borderlands from a hard R/M to a 13-movie. I doubt the people in charge know anything more about Minecraft than they did Borderlands.

    • @TheLastApostle
      @TheLastApostle 3 месяца назад

      @rolay7730 its a blockbuster movie. Its budget is 100% for sure above 100 mil. And toddlers are 2-3 years of age. Nobody is going to make a movie that costs that much and market it towards kids that are barely even old enough to walk and can barely talk. This movie is marketed towards late teens and up. The people who have been playing minecraft for years and years. Thats why they hired jack black and whats his face. If this was made and marketed directly to toddlers they wouldnt have wasted time spending so much money on the cast. Toddlers dont know who they are. Toddlers dont even know the difference between a lego and a cookie my guy. I think the problem is you keep calling them toddlers and you really mean just young children. Probably youre including kids as old as 9 or 10. The definition of toddler is a kid of the age of 1-3. This movie isnt made for them dude

    I feel like a lot of the issues that is related to the Minecraft movie is that it's not animated. Minecraft had been feeding us so many animated shorts, videos, and promotions that we CANNOT imagine a minecraft movie that is live-action as not only does it break the consistency that they're trying to have with their brand but also unreasonably curves the lamp-shade higher. We all know that these blocks won't be realistic, they just won't, yet we can AT LEAST suspend our beliefs for a bit for enjoyment, but going realistic is not the way to fit that in-between. We have games like Mineacraft: Legends, Minecraft: Dungeons, or even Minecraft: Story mode!! STORY MODE!! They could've gone with the style and Minecraft story mode and it would've been BETTER! It allows us to suspend our beliefs and not think about too many of the logistics of whatever they're doing while at the same time staying true to the game to a degree.

      steve just does not have any unique features that would ahve worked in the real world. Might be an interesting movie to see how a supersonic hedgehog might work in the real world, but Steve has nothing to offer... The one thing he is famous for is 100% tied to the physics and rules of the minecraft world.
      It would remove all iconic features of minecraft, including the landscape and the mobs, for the sake of introducing a feature less, bland character into a world that we already know.
      The reverse, introducing real people into minecraft, is the more natural approach and emulates the game much closer, where you as the player, a real human, are introduced to the world by living in it. It is a fantasy world that you are thrown into to explore.
      It picks the viewer up where they are, the real world, to move them into the game.
      People just had that "uncanny"-reaction and doubled, tripled and quadrupled down on the first emotion they had, trying to explain how that emotion is the only truth they care about.

      I don't think that would work. Sonic has a history with human characters, and even if you take Sonic out of the context of his world and friends he still has a strong personality. Steve is a joke name for an avatar. I like Steve, but most players don't even see him since they use custom skins. He is iconic, but unlike Sonic there's nothing that defines him as a character. Sure he mines and crafts, but he doesn't have emotions or motivation. Minecraft Story Mode had the right idea of having distinct characters in the Minecraft world (even if it didn't do an amazing job). Fan content has done a good job too, with Fallen Kingdom being a great example of telling a simple story in the world of Minecraft. By just existing in the game's world (and not being live action people from the real world) the characters just passively embody Minecraft better.
      TLDR Minecraft is defined by the ingame world, so putting it in the real world takes away the little character there is.

I like to imagine that you're not playing in a world made of blocks, you're in a world made of grass and stone and wood and water, and when you place stairs with trapdoors on the sides, it's not just a short flight of stairs but an actual chair. If they did that with live action it could've been epic and epic, OR if they wanted to go blocky they could've done fully animated. To be frank, the entire movie was doomed from the outset, and I’m not typically one to say that kind of thing. I usually think that execution is what matters most in a creative project, but this is a case where I’m seriously questioning that line of thinking.
    I don’t believe the state of this movie is excusable, and I don’t think this is a “wait and see” kind of situation. The movie looks awful, the character designs are heinous, and the comedy presented in the trailer doesn’t even line up with the considered absurdism of the director’s best work.

    honestly I think they tried too hard to have the realism AND the blocky aesthetic when those things really just don't mix well

    The environment looks stunning, but then the actual CGI mobs threw me out of it. I wish there was a better way to design them

    I wouldn't like the realistic art versions of them either. This is a nice middle ground, I kinda like it, just not the human characters. Steve not being blocky is weird.
    We get plenty of Minecraft animations online using the more Minecraft look with less retro looking, so I guess this makes it more distinguishable from any sort of Minecraft animatics.

      Oh I think thats ok.
      If I remember correctly the creepers texture was based off leaves.
      Since its an ambush predator (lol) it could make more sense to adapt for tall grass

    I know this probably won't happen but I think it would be an actually really funny bit if one of the characters played by a live action actor was mortally wounded and after they draw their last breath they momentarily turn red and then disappear, dropping their items

    I also hate how vibrant everyhitng is. Usually you make the point of intererst vibrant, so that it attracts attention, or you use vibrancy to highlight the happy and carefree mood while using dull colours in other scenes. Here, however, everything is so vibrant that I literally don't know what to focus on. I actually feel my brain getting overstimulated. And having semi-realistic textures makes it even more stimulating. This movie will basically be CocoMelon but on steroids. Created to grab children's attention.

    3:37 they're probally changing the cgi later in the film, i guess they was still making it but it didn't had time to fix to make an trailer, probally because it was already rendered and edited

    You know... I have a fanfiction about my OC getting into the Minecraft world... And the "core idea" of that was exactly this conflict between real life creature and this blocky workd with it's own logic(like not being able to place any items, eating a whole bread at a time and other stuff), which gets broken by my character, because he just doesn't understand, that what he does shouldn't be possible in this world.
    And I think that is a really good idea. Those characters in the movie could do the same thing - get trapped in this world, start breaking its rules, while exploring it and trying their best to find the way back. My fanfiction isn't finished, but it probably should be finished with the iconic slaying of the Ender Dragon, and so should the movie I think. Because it's actually what the Minecraft is!!! And they could even make an awesome thing - let some characters choose Minecraft over their real world. They might find it more interesting, letting them express themselves however they want, giving them endless possibilities, very interesting to explore and create. They could show throughout the movie how these characters build awesome stuff out of limited options, just like real Minecraft builders do, that could've been so frickin cool and promoting the game as it is.

    Im terrified about the storyline of this movie. I wish they would bring classic Minecraft ideas to the movies. Like herobrian and the lore/ stories behind him. I wish they'd bring back OG RUclipsrs like some of the Hermits, Stampy and his crew, or the non problematic people from Team Crafted (the like 3 that remain lol) instead of Jack Black. I hope they'll show genuine bits of actual love and creation for this movie, just how we all showed that to the game for so many years. The biggest fear is that they wont understand the weight Minecraft has on so many people. I know when i am stressed or having a meltdown i will still put on Minecraft music or watch old lets plays and i know that is the same for so many people. Point is, they're marketing it for all the dumb kids in the crowds rather that the kids that remember when the idea of a Minecraft movie was just announced and we lost our little minds. You can have a movie that adults now can watch and remember all the beautiful memories we made while playing the game while inspiring the next generation to make even more. But no, funny sheep makes loud noise. yippee.

    Hot Takes:
    1. I actually think that the artstyle is better than what most people make it out to be, its unique enough to be distinguished from fan-made minecraft movie/animation artstyles but still radiates Minceraft.
    2. The people criticizing the crafting scene is just wasting their time arguing about why a comedy skit( not saying its funny or anything ) is not obeying the laws of the main game itself.
    3. I would give em another chance since the Teaser isn't final and just like what happened with Sonic, changes could still be made to the visuals (more specifically, the green screen and lighting on the live action human beings)
